We officially received our Re-Accreditation seal and will move on to the next year of the Accreditation process. Thank you again to the parents, grandparents, and our amazing team for making it all happen! Sunscreen and bug spray consent forms will be coming out shortly. We have also been working hard on finalizing our format for our first annual Professional Development day on June 13th.

School Age Site Supervisor Update We have officially received our re-accreditation seal for the next three years! Thank you to everyone who assisted us in achieving this, it is greatly appreciated. Re-accreditation allows the program to continue to receive grant funding from the province and ensures that our program is meeting the standards and dedicated to providing quality child care. A copy of the report is available in the front hallway for your reference. If your child will be away, please text our program cell number (780) 862-7803. With the new Champs Vallee school, our bus cannot wait around not knowing who is supposed to be on the bus; it causes our bus to run late. Just a reminder that if your child does miss the bus, it is the responsibility of the parent to pick up the child from school.

So much love, care and nurturing has been floating in the sunshine as we explored the much loved topic of “Taking Care of Babies”. It’s amazing how we look at these little ones and consider them to be “babies” but after watching them nurturing their babies, they suddenly looked like 5year olds. Their role playing has offered the children so many opportunities for developing many skills, fine motor ,social , self help , responsibility and identifying body parts. As they role play, they are also developing their imagination as they encounter creative , imagined scenarios with their dolls and other children. As they have been playing they have run into situations that prompt them to communicate resulting in the strengthening of their communication skills. Another important social skill that the children are continuing to learn as they interact with the babies is how to process emotions such as empathy and compassion. Just as caring for their dolls teaches them responsibility, it teaches them to empathize with those around them and allows them to grow up into caring people. They also spent time washing , dressing and undressing the dolls , giving them the perfect opportunity for practicing grooming and hygiene skills such as brushing hair and teeth. It looks like as this learning topic evolves we will be seeing a lot of growing in our little ones. We are expanding this learning topic into people in the community who take care of us like doctors .This will help the children have the sense of community and as we explore this more we hope our exiting role plays will make the doctor visits easier for the families. Pets have also been added into our play as children are starting take care of them , feeding them and taking them to the vet.

This month we wrapped up our exploration of movement and ramps and we started to dive into caretaking a little bit more. We first started to explore this interest by changing our light table area into a community helper center. We added fire trucks, firefighters, a fire hall and a hospital to the shelf for the children to explore. As this interest continued to grow, we added doctor instruments to our room for the children to explore. First they used the instruments to check on our babies and stuffed animals, then we noticed that they began to check each other. They were very familiar with what each instrument was used for. We often observed them checking each other ears, hearts, and eyes. As they checked each other they communicated what they were doing and what they were going to check next, they were very confident in their alibies to help their friends and to make sure they were healthy as can be. We also welcomed back our Grant MaEwan student, Harvinder, back. She will be with us until April 13th. Harvinder is a second year student in her last practicum placement so she will have lots to do in the next few weeks. Her planning and experiences are all around transformation, an interest that she observed when she was here for her first week back in February. She has taken over one of our bulletin boards to display her planning and documentation of the different experiences she will be setting up for the children to explore. If you have a chance please check it out, Harvinder will be adding to it each week. Just a few reminders:   

With the warm weather our park is very wet, if you could possibly bring two pairs of mittens one for the morning and one for the afternoon we would greatly appreciate it. If you haven’t brought in a USB stick for your child’s digital portfolio please do so, we recommend that it’s at least 8GB. We are running a little low on extra clothes, if you could please ensure that your child has a full change of extra clothes in the cubbies we would great appreciate it. Especially with the wet weather snow pants can get very wet and the water sometimes goes right through.

Welcome to April! The children have been talking about rubber boots and splash pants, they shared that they are done with the snow. Our focus for April will continue to be on comparing things in our environment. We will work on counting, prediction and patterning and doing experiments and guessing and charting the outcomes. The children will be given opportunities to measure through cooking experiences, tape measures and through comparisons. During the last few weeks, the children have been measuring and comparing many materials in their lives. Kolby, Gabe and Sam have been measuring their foods at lunch...granola bars, cheese strings and glasses of milk and water. Other children have been measuring how tall they are in comparison to shelves, each other, doors and play equipment. Questions we have heard in the room include, how long can I make this? Could you build this up to the roof? And how high can you reach? We were excited to welcome back our MacEwan student, Kennedy. She will be with us until the middle of April. We were also happy to welcome Rowan and his parents, Kelly and Ryan to our room. Due to the ever changing spring weather, please ensure your child has a change of clothes as it can get very wet in the Rainbow room park. Thank you, Beth, Tammy and Lorena

It is so nice to get rid of our winter gear and finally be able to wear our spring outfits! March was beautiful and full of fresh snow so we enjoyed every moment of it by playing outside, visiting the skateboarding park and simply having fun in the snow fort that we made with our Kinder Room friends. By walking to more distant parks, we worked on preparing our muscles for summer walks where we will be spending the majority of our time running, playing and appreciating the outdoors. As we spend more and more of our afternoons outside, chances are that you may choose to pick your child up from the park. If this is the case, please make sure you make eye contact with your room teacher to acknowledge that your child is leaving. Thank you for your help in this matter. Our children show continuous passion for science and experiments, which we try to incorporate in our program by teaching them specific vocabulary, demonstrating different chemical reactions and engaging the children in the process of recognizing and naming some products. This past month, some of the more interesting experiments included the different densities of colored water and oil, experimenting with magnetism and showing the children how magnetic poles attract or push away from each other. The children also witnessed the process of levitation, where static electricity made a plastic halo float in the air, as well as, what seems to be impossible, witnessing a pierced balloon that did not pop. Please check our second bulletin board dedicated to STEM activities. Seeing so much enthusiasm during our skating days motivated me to book the arena for bike days so that we can have the opportunity to keep ourselves fit and healthy, and to promote exercise and fitness. When getting your child's bike ready, please make sure that bikes are clean and mud-free, as we will be using the ar ena next door . Bike helmets are required. Our bike days will be on Wednesdays, April 18, May 16, and June 6. Simple ways to get ready for Kindergarten: 

Verbally give your child specific one-step and two-step directions and encourage them to follow through.

Read to your child for a combined total of at least 20 minutes each day.

After reading, ask your child what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Once again, our room has taken a turn in planning, the children really like to keep us on our toes with their ever-changing interests! We began our month continuing our exploration of shelters and habitats where the children greatly enjoyed the loose parts provided to them for building forts, such as boxes, blankets, clamps, and a variety of sizes of blocks. While exploring this, we noticed that the children began requesting a much wider variety of seemingly random of activities. This led us to where we are at now with our planning which is letting the children take the lead! We sat each child down individually and gave them the opportunity to plan their own special day by themselves. The children have greatly enjoyed this and look forward each day to finding out who’s day it is and what activities they have planned! Take a look at the documentation board in our room to see who has had their days so far, and what types of things they planned for the room. We are very interested to see where this takes us, and are hoping it leads to weekly gatherings with our children where we can discuss our plans for the coming week and allow them a very hands on approach to what is happening in our room! Spring is finally here! Which means plenty of water and mud play will be happening outside! Please make sure you child always has an extra set of clothes here as we often come inside and they are needing to change out of wet clothes. Thank you !

Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter and had a nice long weekend resting up. Spring is here finally and hopefully the snow melts quickly. Because it is still wet outside we ask that the children have either splash pants or continue to wear snow pants when we go outside. We know that it is getting warmer but they are getting wet and if they don’t have a change of clothes we don’t want them having to sit around in wet clothes. Could you also ensure that your child’s boots and clothing have their names marked in their clothing. Many children have the same style of boots and have accidently taken the wrong one home. Welcome back Karissa. It is great to have Karissa back from her Maternity leave. It hard to believe that it’s been a year already. Spring Break kept us very busy this year. We started off with Game Day. Children were allowed to bring in a board game from home. They also had a chance to create a game that they could play at the centre during the week. Sports Day was filled with variety of sports held indoors and outdoors. The children enjoy being able to wear their jerseys. Disney Day was filled with songs activities all based off of different Disney Movies and characters. The children also got to dress up as their favorite Disney Character. Wednesday we walked to the Aqua Fit to go swimming. After all that activity we decided to finish off the week with a relaxing PJ and Movie Day with popcorn. That was the perfect way to start off the Easter Weekend. Congratulations to Avery M who was the book club winner for the month. Enjoy your book Avery. Just a reminder that there is a PD on April 20. We will be surveying the children to find out what they would like to do on that day and will let you know. SAS

Congratulations to Moniqua for graduating nursing school. She is now a nurse and has a job starting the end of April. Her good fortune is our loss though. Her last day will be April 11. We wish her all the best. Hopefully she will come and visit us some time.

Birthday wishes go out to: Ingrid April 4, Ariunaa April 6 Carson April 18. Have a great day!!!
