Sunshine Room Early Learning Child Care

The sunshine room is excited to see the snow melt away, we have all been waiting to enjoy exploring the outdoors. The children seem much happier outside and we are sure it’s because of the lighter clothing that’s allowing them to experience outdoor play more. Because of the melting snow we have lots of puddles around our park which we try to avoid but you know the little kiddos seem to have that 6th sense that leads them to that one puddle that we didn’t think existed .That being said, please ensure that your little one has a change of clothes because we do get messy out there. We have been having as much fun inside as well. Our interest topic is Wheels and Movement. This was inspired by the children as they seemed so focused and showed so much excitement when they see a truck, bus or car drive by. They are spending lots of time sitting on the window ledge and pointing out the different types of transportation they are seeing. They are having so much fun pushing and pulling each other in the wagon, driving the tinker cars, moving on the scooters and pushing chairs around in the room. At the moment their favourite thing to do is race trucks down the side walk in our park, cut the grass with the mowers and roll wheels down the ramp. We are hoping to take a mini field trip onto the school bus soon, I am sure that’s going to be quite an exciting experience for the children. And as always thank you for all that you continue to do in supporting our programming .

This month our focus has been on things that move! The children have been really interested in modes of transportation and how we move our bodies. We brought in our large wooden train track for the children to explore, some of them chose to connect many trains together and move them along the tracks while overs just chose to use the hot wheels cars to drive on the tracks. With lots of our families going on vacation lately the children have been discussing how they got to go on an airplane, we took this opportunity to bring in some airplanes big and small for the children to explore! Our lunch time discussions have been great lately and the children have started to ask lots of questions like: What’s your mom’s name? What’s your dad’s name? Do you have a pet? What’s the color of your house? The children have been really focused on the colors of their friends’ houses lately and we want to explore this a bit more. If you could please text or email us a picture of the outside of your house we would greatly appreciate it. We are wanting to print them off to put on our walls and to also put them on blocks so they are use them when they are building in the block corner. We are so excited that the warm weather has finally arrived, with this our park can be quite messy and slippery. With this being said it’s really hard to know what type of outdoor clothing to send for your child to wear, the mornings are still a bit chilly and warmer clothing is needed, but the afternoon can be quite warm and lighter clothing is needed. Spring is a time where the children’s cubbies are usually bulging with clothing because you need clothing for every season it seems. Please insure that you child does have an extra change of clothes so if they do get wet while exploring and playing outside we are able to change them into dry clothing. If we aren’t in our park at the end of the day we are mostly likely in the Sunshine Room Park!

April has arrived, bringing beautiful weather! We have noticed that children have been very interested in water. They have been filing their own water bottles, spending a lot of time engaged in play at the water table with a variety of materials and talking a lot about icicles and how they are created. Kaley went on a holiday to Mexico and all she could talk about was the beach and the water. Our new focus will be on “How can we explore with water?” We will be exploring scientific and mathematical concepts such as prediction and observation, comparing volume, checking out what materials absorb water and what dissolves in water. These experiences will support the children’s language development with the introduction of new words and concepts as well as promoting social skills as the children work together to discover answers to their questions. We will be exploring Beaumont in search of ice to crack and puddles to jump in. Please ensure your child has an extra change of clothes at the centre, including socks. We were excited to welcome Ava and Alena to our room in early March! They are doing great and getting along great with everyone. Thanks, Beth, Tammy and Simran

It is so nice to get rid of our winter gear and finally be able to wear our spring outfits! March was beautiful and full of fresh snow so we enjoyed every moment of it by playing outside, visiting the skateboarding park and simply having fun in the snow fort that we made with our Kinder Room friends. By walking to more distant parks, we worked on preparing our muscles for summer walks where we will be spending the majority of our time running, playing and appreciating the outdoors. As we spend more and more of our afternoons outside, chances are that you may choose to pick your child up from the park. If this is the case, please make sure you make eye contact with your room teacher to acknowledge that your child is leaving. Thank you for your help in this matter. Our children show continuous passion for science and experiments, which we try to incorporate in our program by teaching them specific vocabulary, demonstrating different chemical reactions and engaging the children in the process of recognizing and naming some products. This past month, some of the more interesting STEM activities included the different densities of colored hair gel, experimenting with magnetism and showing the children how magnetic poles attract or push away from each other. The children also witnessed the process of making our own vanilla ice cream, as well as how to produce our own frost. Seeing so much enthusiasm during our skating days motivated us to book the arena for bike days so that we can have the opportunity to keep ourselves fit and healthy, and to promote exercise and well-being. When getting your child's bike ready, please make sure that bikes are clean and mud-free, as we will be using the arena next door. Bike helmets are required. Our bike days will be on Wednesdays, April 17, May 15, and June 19. Simple ways to get ready for Kindergarten:
Verbally give your child specific one-step and two-step directions and encourage them to follow through.
Have your child sort items according to color, size, and shape (laundry, blocks, silverware, toys, books, etc.)
Count objects in your home; have your child point to each object as they count.
Ask them for advice or their opinion.
Happy Birthday to Chloe, Kolby, Samuel and Aksel!

March had finally brought some warm weather and April shows even more!! We spent a lot of time outside in March and took full advantage of the warm temperatures. The kinder room children have been very busy with building/construction using various materials. Their interest seems to still stay around building as we continue to provide new materials. They also seem interested in miniature worlds so we have already started creating mini worlds on the tables and sensory bin. “Special book day” has been going awesome and the children seem very excited about bringing in a book to share. We will be extending special book day and continue to do it each month. April shows warm temperatures so the kinder room plans to start heading out on more walks through the neighbourhood and start visiting more parks. They also seem to be showing more of an interest in outside activities such as soccer and visiting parks. Please be sure to send appropriate outside gear such as splash pants, two pairs of mitts, sun hat, runners and rain boots. The weather this time of year changes within hours so please be sure to have options of outside gear ready for the daily changes. We have recently moved a white board into the hallway. This will display our daily activities as well as sometimes have daily pictures displayed above. We don’t always get a chance to chat at the end of the day so this is an opportunity to see what we were up to during the day. Friendly Reminder: Please do not bring in toys unless it is a toy day. We have been noticing that some children are bringing in toys. Feel free to bring in a stuffed animal for them to snuggle with if they need that extra comfort during the day, but please keep other toys at home unless posted as a toy day. We will try in incorporate at least one toy day a month. Thanks! Baby news: Amy had her baby on March 26th at 2:45am!! Abigail Camryn Barnard weighing 8 lbs 10 oz. Everyone is doing great and settling in at home!

Spring is officially here. It is wet out there but we are not going to complain too much. Now that the weather is nice and there are lots of puddles out there, splash pants and rubber boots are needed for when we go outside. We started the month off with Health and Fitness as our theme. We added trampoline into the work out room as well as doing some stair climbing exercises. We had a Step Tracker Challenge, where the children that wanted to participate kept track of how many steps they walked for a week. We divided into two groups. Those who had wrist trackers and those who had ones that attached to their hips. Congratulations to Ella who did the most steps for the wrist tracker. She did a total of 113,866 steps which worked out to an average of 16,266 steps per day. Sebastian was the one who did the most steps wearing the step tracker on his hip. He did a total of 108,408 steps which averaged out to 15,487 steps per day. Great job everyone! You all did a super job. Spring Break was packed with a different themes for each day. On the first Friday the children chose a “Team Titan Go” theme. Children dressed up as their favorite character and there were many superhero activities that the children participate in. Monday was “Challenge Day.” Challenges included building with blocks and marshmallows, Minute to Win It races and drawing challenges. On Tuesday a group of children walked up to the library and the ones that did not want to go to the library had a mini stick tournament. Wednesday was Twin Day. Children picked a partner and they dressed alike and did everything in unison. The day also included a variety of partner challenges. Thursday was a Gardening and Scavenger Hunt Day. We planted different types of seeds and are charting to see which seed grows the fastest. There was a scavenger hunt in the morning and one in the afternoon. Spring Break finished off with a PJ and Spa day. It started off as a nice relaxing day with the children giving manicures and face masks. We then watched the movie “Teen Titian Go”. In the afternoon we ended up with a Dance Party which is always a big hit. The book club winner for the month was Justin. Great job. We have changed up on Parent Information Board. This month’s topic in Communication. Come in and check it out. Have a great month.
