Residents asked to send letter to government
UPCOMING EVENTS
Annexation proposal is in the home stretch The Municipal Government Board (MGB) has reviewed Beaumont’s annexation proposal and has made a recommendation to the Minister of Municipal Affairs. The recommendation regarding our proposal is confidential and we do not know the specifics; however, we believe our annexation proposal is strong and we are optimistic that a decision will be made in our favour. And to help influence the decision, we are asking residents to write to the premier, the minister of municipal affairs, the other members of Cabinet and our MLA Shaye Anderson asking them to support Beaumont’s annexation proposal. “We feel it is very important for those people who are affected by the annexation to show their support and to make their wishes known,” says Mayor Camille Bérubé. “This land is vital for our long-term growth for the next 50 years.”
We don’t know when a decision will be made; however, we do know it is in the hands of senior officials within the provincial government and we feel a last “push” from residents will be very effective in cementing support. The annexation proposal seeks an additional 21 quarter sections, and the MGB can recommend any amount of land up to that amount. “I encourage all residents who support Beaumont’s annexation proposal to go to our website and social media feeds, and click the link to quickly and easily send a letter to the province,” Mayor Bérubé says. Go to www.beaumont.ab.ca/writegovnow. Click the links to create an email that is addressed to the premier, members of Cabinet and MLA Anderson.
Assessment notices coming soon The annual combined property assessments and tax notices will be mailed May 31. Taxes are due June 30, with a 6% penalty applied on July 4. The Town will host a public open house where a property assessor will be available to answer questions. The open house will be held on Tuesday, June 14 from 3-6 p.m. in Council chambers.

72 HOURS: IS YOUR FAMILY PREPARED? If an emergency happens in Beaumont, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you. You may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours. Build a 72-hour emergency kit using these basic steps to help you and your loved ones during an emergency. What would you take if you had 3 minutes to evacuate your home?
Create or Purchase An Emergency Kit In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. The key is to make sure they are organized and easy to find. Would you be able to find your flashlight in the dark? Make sure your kit is easy to carry and everyone in the household knows where it is. Keep it in a backpack, duffle bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place, such as your front-hall closet. It’s a good idea to separate some of these supplies in backpacks. That way, your kit will be more portable and each person can personalize his or her own grab-and-go emergency kit.
Basic Emergency Kit • Water – at least 2 litres of water per person per day; include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order. • Food that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (replace food and water once a year). • Manual can-opener. • Crank or battery-powered flashlight (and extra batteries). Replace batteries once a year. • Crank, battery-powered radio (and extra batteries) or Weatheradio. • First aid kit. • Extra keys to your car and house.
• Some cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills and change for payphones. • A copy of your emergency plan and contact information. •
If applicable, other items such as prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities, or food, water and medication for your pets or service animal (personalize according to your needs).
If you think your water is contaminated, check with your municipality or local authorities for details. When in doubt, do not drink water you suspect may be contaminated. Keep some cash on hand, as automated bank machines and their networks may not work during an emergency. You may have difficulty using debit or credit cards.
