ChristmasSafety Tree
Be fire smart, as you deck the halls this holiday season. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.

ALBERTA BUDGET CONTAINS CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR BEAUMONT Mayor John Stewart’s Column
@Beaumont_AB
After Christmas Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Recycle your Christmas tree January 6-17 at the Beaumont Operations Facility. See hours above. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

FACTS
!
One of every three home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems.
!
Although Christmas tree fires are not common, they are more likely to be serious, when they do occur.
• !
A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in every four of the fires.
The dust is still settling from the release of the Alberta government’s budget on Oct. 24 and reaction from different corners is mixed, even among municipalities in the region. Some of our neighbours see dark clouds on the horizon. I see challenges ahead for Beaumont, but I also see some bright spots. City administration is poring over the numbers so that we can fully understand its impacts, but this much is already clear – the Alberta budget will affect Beaumont residents as we continue to address the infrastructure needs of a rapidly expanding population. Beaumont continues to be one of Canada’s fastest growing communities. More people coming here means more need for roads, sports and recreational facilities, water and wastewater infrastructure.
community programs and services, such as policing, libraries, and Family and Community Support Services. The government’s focus on jobs, economic growth and reducing red tape is also welcome. The provincial budget also reaffirms Beaumont’s direction. Our strategic plan, with its focus on economic prosperity, regional collaboration and fiscal responsibilities, already provides a strong roadmap. By working with our municipal neighbours, for example, we can be more efficient and effective with some services. Supporting local entrepreneurs and attracting new businesses to Beaumont will strengthen and diversify our tax base so that we can continue to afford services and infrastructure for a growing population.
The provincial government’s cuts to municipal capital grants will challenge our ability keep up with critical infrastructure, let alone make sure we properly look after what we already have. Other budget reductions will impact our work with regional partners to coordinate planning and services, such as transit and recreation. The government also signaled that further cuts may be coming if the province’s revenue situation doesn’t improve.
I recognize that the Alberta must get back on stable financial footing and regain its competitive edge if we want sustainable services for our children and grandchildren. The Alberta government is making tough decisions and now council will also have to make tough decisions as a result of the budget.
On the other side of the coin, I am pleased the government maintained funding for important
