**SWIM LEVELS MAY BE COMBINED WITH A LEVEL ABOVE OR BELOW TO CREATE MORE CLASS OPTIONS **

SWIM KIDS 1: Note: Swim Kids begins at 5 years In Swim Kids 1, swimmers receive an orientation to the water and the pool area. -

Learned skills: front floats, back floats, glides, and kicking. Upon completion of this level, swimmers will be able to swim 5 metres unassisted.

SWIM KIDS 2: In Swim Kids 2, swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface of the water. -

Learned skills: front glides, back glides, side glides, roll-over glides, deep-water activities, and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10-metre distance swim and the 10-metre front glide.

SWIM KIDS 3: Swim Kids 3 provides an introduction to diving and other unassisted deep-water activities and teaches making wise choices about when and where to swim. -

Learned skills: front glide, back glide, side glide, and front glide/side glide combination. Endurance is achieved by 15-metre front glides and 10-metre front swims.

SWIM KIDS 4: Swim Kids 4 further develops skills learned in Swim Kids 3, including front glides, side glides, and front crawl. -

Learned skills: back glides with shoulder roll, kneeling dives, surface support for 45 seconds, and an introduction to sculling. Endurance is built through a 25-metre distance swim and a 15-metre kick on back.

SWIM KIDS 5: Swim Kids 5 introduces swimmers to back crawl, sculling, safe boating skills, whip kick on the back, and stride dives. -

The front crawl focus is on hand entry into the water, and the distance is increased to 15 metres. Endurance is developed through 50-metre distance swims and 25-metre kicks.

SWIM KIDS 6: Swim Kids 6 refines front crawl with a focus on body roll and breathing, improves back crawl with a focus on arm positions, and works on whip kick on back. -

Learned skills: elementary backstroke, safety on ice, rescue of others with throwing assists, dolphin kick, and front dives. Endurance is built through 75-metre distance swims and treading water for 90 seconds.

SWIM KIDS 7/8: -

Level 7: Swim Kids 7 builds skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching and throwing assists with rescue equipment, stride entries, and are introduced to whip kick on the front. Swimming endurance is increased to 150-metre distance swims

-

Level 8: Swim Kids 8 includes an introduction to breaststroke, feet-first surface dives, and rescue entries. Swimmers are introduced to scissor kick as a warm-up/cool-down stroke for fitness. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick drills and 500-metre distance swims.

ADULT/TEEN LESSONS: *PARTICIPANTS 16+ All swimming abilities are welcome! In these classes, teens and adults alike will develop water confidence and skills to ensure comfort in and around the water. Depending on skill level, students can work on floats, glides, kicking, jumping into deep water, and treading water. Fitness drills suitable for individual skill levels will increase strength and endurance. For the more advanced adult and teen swimmers, working on lifesaving kicks and swimming strokes with endurance workouts take precedence, as well as activities such as shallow dives, stride entries, compact jumps, underwater swims to recover objects, and underwater somersaults. Let your instructor know the skills you would like to work on.

ADAPTED AQUATIC LESSONS: The Red Cross Swim Adapted Aquatics program is for swimmers with special needs. While this program uses the progressions in the Red Cross Swim Preschool and Swim Kids programs, the performance criteria for each level have been broken down into smaller, more manageable progressions to create a positive learning environment and make the success of each swimmer more achievable. The progressions have been created to progress swimmers with special needs slowly and at their own rate.

*Please note that this program is for swimmers with special needs that need the one-on-one interaction between them, their aid, and an instructor and do not function well in group classes. They also need the swimming curriculum to be adapted to their unique physical, mental, and learning abilities. Our goal with all participants is to help them to grow and advance in the regular Red Cross Swim Preschool and Swim Kids programs with group classes so that there are always spots open in this program for new participants. Please contact the BSRC Aquatics Team to learn more about the program and the registration process. - E-mail: aquatic.programs@beaumont.ab.ca

PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS: -
