Child Care Services Supervisor Update We would like to welcome a new casual staff to the School Age Site. Asma will be starting on February 5th and working various shifts to cover vacation time for the full-time educators. ELCC had an announced licensing visit on January 9th and everything was great!! Copies of the licensing report will be posted in each room. You can look up the status of any licensed child care program at: http://www.humanservices.alberta.ca/oldfusion/ChildCareLookup.cfm Our team at both sites have been busy attending workshops with Dr. Jody Carrington, completing first aid re-certification and participating is engagement sessions with the consultants conducting the Child Care Review. Opportunities for parent engagement sessions will be happening in the near future. We will let you know so you all have the chance to voice your opinion and ask questions as well. On March 2nd we are excited to be offering a parenting workshop in the morning from 9-11 for all Child Care Services families. More details to come but please mark this date on your calendar!! We hope you have a great month and enjoy some quality “unplugged family time for Family Day!! Jodie Vesso
Sunshine Room Early Learning Child Care

The Sunshine Room has been quite interesting and very busy in the last few weeks .We have come to the realization that this group of children is very diverse in their interests , which has made our observations quite unique . We have been putting out a vast number of activities just to see which of the learning experiences they will gravitate to , and like the toddlers they are, they are showing us that they have a mind of their own. It’s been amazing watching how they explore the learning experiences put out in different ways . This has been great for us because they are actually helping us in coming up with new ideas to explore and also pushing us to think more and more outside the box. We have been going outside as much as the weather permits us. The children are still trying to adjust to being outside in the cool weather coupled with the bulky outdoor wear. For most of them it’s their first winter and they just don’t get why it has to be that cold but the more we do it the sooner they will get used to it. We do however limit the amount of time they are outdoors until they are used it. That being said, please keep checking their lockers to make sure that their extra set of clothes is appropriate for the season. Please keep in mind the limited space they have to keep their extra clothes so one set of clothes should be ok so their little baskets are not overflowing.

It’s hard to believe that February is already here! With all of the cold days in January we were stuck inside a lot so we brought the outside inside. We explored lots of different ice experiences and of course we brought snow in to explore too. The children really loved using the wooden hammers to break apart the ice and take out the treasures that were frozen inside. We did this experience a few different times and we can’t wait to do it again. We are continuing to explore caregiving in our room, our focus has been a little more in the house corner area as the children really love taking care of the babies and each other. We added some loose parts to our house corner so the children are able to use these items to create so many different things! We also added the floor high chairs to see what the children will do with them. At first we thought they would use them for the babies, but quickly we observed that they began using them themselves. One child would sit in the chair and snap the tray on while another children would bring them different food items and things to drink. It was a little tricky at first because once they were in they didn’t quite know how to get out! It didn’t take them very long to figure out how to remove the tray with a little bit of help from Kristi and Laura. As we continue to explore caregiving we have also started to explore building as well. This interest has evolved over the past few weeks as we observed the children building tall towers and houses with small blocks and then it moved to the block corner where they began using the large wooden hollow blocks. We added some pictures of different buildings and towers in our block corner to give the children some inspiration when they are creating their wonderful towers. We can’t wait to explore this interest a little bit more! In the next few months we have a few children going part time so there will be some new children starting in the next few months! We are excited to welcome some new families and children to our room.

February has arrived! We have one birthday this month…Maggie turns 4 on February 25 th – Happy Birthday!!! We completed our focus on “How we are we different? The children enjoyed discovering how they were different and the same and love to check how tall they are daily on our height chart. Our new interest is “Where do we go when we travel? We will looking at different types of transportation, places to go, what we need to get there, and what we need to bring. The children have been discussing their travel plans around the room, with their families and their friends. They have been noticing airplanes while we are outside and commenting on different types of vehicles driving by. Gabby went on the Polar Express train over the holidays and shared her adventures with her friends and Maggie travelled to visit her Grandparents. The children have also been camping in the room and going on picnics. Just a reminder that Toy Day is every Friday – books are welcome anytime as everyone loves to read and share their favorite books and stuffies are welcome for naptime. The children really enjoyed exploring with Gak, here is the recipe if you would like to try it at home: Gak: 1 cup of Elmer’s glue 4tbsp of liquid laundry detergent Mix it together If sticky, dissolve 1 tsp of baking soda in ¼ cup of water and rinse it! Thanks, Simran, Tammy and Beth

The first month of the New Year passed so quickly in our room. The children learned all the digits that represent the number 2019 and are able to recognize them. They are also able to sing all twelve months of the year. We noticed a tremendous interest towards science experiments which we expanded by observing an exploding snowman experiment, counting how many water droplets we could pour on one penny, observing a windpowered vehicle in action, testing Humpty Dumpty's resistance while falling off a wall surrounded by many different materials, finding magnetic and non-magnetic objects, and finally, observing water's surface tension. Our children enriched their vocabulary with any scientific words like "prediction", "hypothesis", "observation", "conclusion", "tension", "eruption", "pressure" and many more. Please take the time to talk to your child about their learning observations on this matter. From our own observations, we have concluded that our children show enormous creativity and cleverness while using Lego, so we have it available on a daily basis. We gave them some challenges and ideas like how to make a Beyblade, a zip line, and a houseboat, just to name a few. We believe that LEGO is the best toy ever! The recent Kindergarten registration may bring some questions regarding school readiness, so here are some tips on how to help your child get ready for their big step. Simple ways to get ready for Kindergarten:
Help your child practice social skills by setting up play dates with friends. Talk about what being a good friend looks like. Be clear about what you expect will set your child up for success. Day to remember: Skating day, February 12th at 10:30am to 11:30am. As always we are very thankful for parent volunteers.

January was once again another busy month in the kinder room, the children’s interest seems to have shifted to exploring movement, both large scale and small scale! We spent over a week just simple exploring the concept of spinning and doing countless activities that involved spinning! We maneuvered large spinning objects, and created our own small spinning objects! To accommodate our interest in movement, we have built a gym in our room, we started by adding the elliptical, some weights, various yoga poses, and a set of exercise dice! We have also been seeing a growing interest in hockey, not only watching and playing, but we have also been keeping track of the stats of three different NHL teams, the Oilers, Jets, and Golden Knights! The children have greatly enjoyed checking the schedules, keeping track of wins and losses, and comparing how each team is doing. January also brought us our first sledding day which was greatly enjoyed by everyone, we are hoping the weather cooperates so we can have many more. A quick note from Amy: As I’m sure you all know, we are expecting our second child in March! We are so excited for this new adventure for our growing family! Unfortunately this means my last day of work will be February 28. I just wanted to say thank you to all of the amazing children and families in the kinder room who have made my last few months of work so great. I will certainly miss everyone here, and hope to see you all around!

Wow, it’s already February, the ground hog will be coming out shortly to let us know if winter is almost over or if we will have a longer winter. Fingers crossed that winter is almost over. January was a busy month for us, getting back into the swing of things from Christmas. We did many activities on winter and arctic animals and then games became a huge interest. We explored many different types of board games, action games, ones where you had to answer questions and others where you had to roll a dice. The children even invented their own games. They designed, created and then made the game pieces as well as coming up with the rules. We made Sequence floor game, a large Jenga game and a floor checker game. Jeopardy has been lots of fun requiring the children to think of the answer before they can get the points. Plinko has been another game that the children have enjoyed answering questions to. We are still thinking of some group games that we can work together as a team to design. We have pictures posted for all to see on the Learning story walls throughout the building and will also be putting some on the TV so please come in and take a look. Book Nook Crew winners for the month of January were Leo, Elise, Charlotte, and Conor M. For the month of February the luck winner is Jensen. Keep up the great work guys. Slime has become an interest lately so we have been experimenting with different recipes using different activators and comparing the results. If anyone has a favorite slime recipe that they have tried at home please share it will you. Also if anyone has any old DC’s that they are getting rid of we would be more than happy to take them off your hands. We need some for a craft that we would like to do. SAS
