ELCC Supervisor Update The child care center has received our Accreditation seal for another year – this means that the center exceeds minimum licensing standards and our center has been recognized as a leader in the area. More information on Accreditation can be found at: http://www.aelcs.ca/Pages/default.aspx We will be celebrating International Mud Day here at the center on June 29. Please send your child with an old towel, swim suit or shorts and t-shirt that can get messy and possibly will be stained. We’ve had such a blast celebrating this event the past three years and have been planning some exciting activities for the children to participate in this time around. Please remember to bring your child’s vacation schedule back no later than June 2 nd as we are trying to finalize the summer staffing schedule. Staffing update: We were approved for two summer students this year so we welcome Alex to the team and Brielle who will be starting to work full-time hours over the next few months. I am currently in the process of hiring three new full-time staff and hope to have everyone in place for the beginning of July. Parent Surveys: These will be emailed out this month and we look forward to your responses and constructive feedback! A big THANK YOU to the Miller, Jones, Schulmeister and Schmidt families for bringing items to our staff appreciation breakfast – it was greatly appreciated!! Happy Father’s Day to all our Dad’s and Grandpa’s – hope you have an enjoyable day! Jodie Vesso

SAS Supervisor Update The kids were busy designing a soap box derby car for the upcoming Town and country Days! We started off first with a survey to see what we should make it into. The final three choices were an X Wing, a Police Car, or banana. I’m glad the X Wing had more votes because I do not think the banana would have been to “appeeling.!” The children had a great time using saws and hammers and Jonas will be driving this masterpiece down Bellevue hill on June 17th! Everyone is invited! Our final interviews and report with the School’s Out, Let’s Move project were completed and the results will be available soon. This project in collaboration with the University of Alberta selected us as an intervention site to seek out ways to provide more nutritional and gross motor opportunities for after school care centres between the times of 3pm and 6 pm. Thank you to all of the parents/guardians who consented their child to participate. We have acquired some new resources that will enable our program to provide more quality programming opportunities geared towards more vigorous gross motor activities and enhanced menu planning. Our program cell number is (780) 862-7803. Please text or call if your child will be absent. This helps our bus to run on schedule. Thank, have a great month! Chris Kruk

The sunshine room has been enjoying the sunshine outside and we have been going for many walks. The children are getting very good at remembering the safety rules of staying on the sidewalk of path, staying together as a group and holding our partners hand. We have been walking all around Beaumont, past the library and running up and down the hill, in behind JE Lapointe school and on the soccer fields, we have even crossed 50 th street and walked around the neighborhood past some of our friends’ houses. The children are noticing many things while we are out and we have had some good chats about bugs, cars and truck as well as airplanes. They have heard bird chirping and watched the wind blow the pinecones off the trees in our park. Outdoor time seems to be a favorite for all. In the room we continue to work on our self-help skills by trying really hard to put our outdoor clothes on by ourselves, feed ourselves using our spoon instead of our hands, and washing and drying our hands. We have also been working really hard at building our vocabulary. For example at lunch time the children who say more please have been encouraged to try a different phrase such as something else please. The babies were a favorite for most of the month. The children have enjoyed having the chance to dress and feed them. They have given the babies baths and dried them off afterwards. We have noticed them rocking the babies to sleep and putting them to bed and covering them up with blankets. Some have even been observed singing songs to the babies. It has been a great role play opportunity for them. Some of the sensory experiences that have been offered this month are glitter, glue, paint, goop, water and sand. We have also offered many opportunities for the children to build their fine motor skills and eye hand coordination with stickers, crayons and markers. Recently we have noticed the children are very interested in all types of animals, what they are called and what sound they make. We have decided to offer some farm animal activities and see where that leads. So far they have shown a huge interest in ducks. They have enjoyed playing “find the duck”; we get asked numerous times a day to hide the duck. Gentle Reminders:  Please remember to label everything… Shoes, boots, extra clothes, hats, etc. Sometimes we have more than 1 friend with the same item and it can get difficult.  For health and safety reasons it is very important that the children have close toed shoes for outdoor time.  If you are providing a sunhat instead of a ball cap please try and have one that has a tie at the chin. We are noticing that they lift off the head easily with a small breeze and they are blowing away while children are running or while we are on a walk. Thank you! Tendai and Michelle

This month we were busy working on our Garden Project! We planted our seeds in little starter cups and made sure to take really good care of them. The children were so excited to help plant all the seeds, but they were a little disappointed when we checked on them after a few days and nothing had grown yet. We reassured them that sometimes it takes a while for the seeds to start sprouting, to our surprise when we came back from the weekend we noticed that our beans had started to sprout and some of them were growing very fast. Now that the warm weather is here to stay we will be transplanting the garden outside and planting a few extra seeds that we have left. We have started our Garden Project documentation board and will be adding to it as things change throughout the summer. Our student, Angie, planned some great experiences for your children to explore this last month as well. She noticed that the children were really interested in ramps and she incorporated them both in our room and outside. I think our favorite experience was heading to the skateboard park with different sized balls and rolling them down the ramps. We also loved sliding down the ramps on our bums, we figured out that some of the ramps were very steep and those ones were the fastest to slide down. Angie will be doing lots of documentation on these different experiences so please come on in and take a look at them.

May was a fun month in the Rainbow room! The children all enjoyed bringing in and sharing their bags of “beautiful stuff”. Working together, we decided to sort the materials into these seven categories – string, paper, wood, plastic, natural, feathers and mini materials. These materials have been used throughout the room - in the water table, as building materials, as art materials, in the dramatic play centre and in the sand table. The children are continuing to add to our natural material collection on a daily basis. One of their favorite activities was painting with the sticks they found in the park. We spent a lot of time outside this month, visiting different parks and areas around Beaumont and will be continuing this through June. Our focus for June will continue to be on the collection and use of “loose parts” in our room. Loose parts are defined as alluring, beautiful found objects and materials that children can move, manipulate and control while they play (Oxforshire Play Association, accessed 2014) We will be exploring four different areas – how loose parts appeal to our senses through color, texture and sound. What can we create with these materials in relation to art, design and symbolic play? How can we move our loose parts? And inquiry – what can we build, learn or compare our materials to in our world. Thanks, Tammy, Lorena and Beth

It is hard to believe but the school year is almost behind us! May was a busy month in our room as preparation for our Mother's Day Tea Party kept us going. The children learned a new song, which they were very proud of and a little bit shy to sing for their moms, as well as prepared small gifts for them. Gathering ingredients for our menu, baking a carrot and apple cakes, preparing fruit and setting the table made the children very proud and anxious to see their mothers coming to the Gold Room that Thursday afternoon. Thank you to all the moms and one auntie for taking part in this special occasion. Celebrating it gives the children an opportunity to show their love and respect for that special person in their life and extends the connection between home and the center. Our next event was the second Bicycle Day, in which all the children eagerly participated, showing their skills and of course their bikes, scooters and striders. The last indoor Bike Day will be on June 14 from 10:30am to 11:30am. Our interest-based planning took us in many spring related directions, such as catching and observing lady bugs, starting our ant farm, building a birds nest, "sprouting" the sock and learning about simple machines. Our observations show that the children love all kinds of guessing games and as a result, we are preparing many different ones for circle time. To extend their interest we encourage you to play simple guessing games at home, choosing themes like animals, the alphabet, numbers or children's literature. This is a simple way to prepare your children for Kindergarten. As you may have noticed, the SPEAK information will be going home on Tuesday and Wednesday, giving parents the opportunity to talk to your children about some important matters. We are planning to invite dads for the Father's Day Sport Event so please check the info board for the date and time. Birthday wishes go out to Charlotte and Felix!

Kinder Room

The month of May was certainly a busy one in the Kinder Room! We focussed a lot on our kindness project and are so thrilled to say that our wall was filled with over 120 acts of kindness, and that was only a moments we able to catch and write down! The children have really seemed to grasp the importance of being kind to others and how it causes other to be kind in return. We took down all of the hearts off of our wall and had a kindness celebration where we baked cookies for everybody in the daycare, made each room a big card describing what we liked about them, and best of all we had a dance party and invited the gold room to join us! We have also really developed an interest in paper airplanes and have been making countless of them to take outside to fly. It was a bit challenging at first as we learned the proper way to fold the paper, and how to secure it so the plane would stay together when we threw them. Our other projects have included paper helicopters, cardboard boomerangs, kites, giant paper airplanes, and ping pong ball launchers! The amount of things that we can find to fly seems to be endless! We try our best to ensure that the children are properly dressed go outside each day, but as we only have a couple extra hats to lend out, please ensure your child brings their own each day.

With the warmer weather here we go outside as much as possible. Please ensure that your child has a hat and water bottle that can stay at the site. Also if you decided to supply your own sunscreen and bug spray please make sure that it is labeled and in your child’s cubby. We have been busy trying to plan the summer activities and shortly you will be receiving an email with the daily activities, field trips, vacation scheduling form, menu and hot lunch form. Please fill out and return as soon as possible. This will give us an idea of how much we need to get. This past month a group of children have been busy preparing and planting a garden. Now we are all anxiously waiting for everything to grow so that we can enjoy sampling the results. Chris had a group of boys that re designed Jonas’s go-kart for Beaumont days. The kids did a great job as you can see in the pictures. Congratulations to Aliyah and Fraser who are the book club winners for May. Since we do not put out a newsletter in July and August our book club winner for June is Brayden. Congratulations to all. Keep on reading as this continues through the summer. A reminder that if your child will not be at the center please call us at 780-929-2190 and leave a message or text at 780- 862-7802
