Child Care Services Supervisor Update Welcome to June!

As most of you are aware, Chris Kruk had resigned his position with the Town of Beaumont School Age Site effective May 30th and we wish him all the best! At this time, the organization has decided not to re-hire the SAS supervisor position. I will be taking on the role of supervisor at the SAS as well as continuing on with the ELCC program effective May 31st.

I do know most of the SAS families already but I look forward to reconnecting and meeting those families that I haven’t had a chance to yet.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly at any time.

We will be celebrating International Mud Day at the ELCC on June 29. Please send your child with an old towel, swim suit or shorts and t-shirt that can get messy and possibly will be stained. We’ve had such a blast celebrating this event the past four years and have been planning some exciting activities for the children to participate in this time around.

The SAS summer calendar and forms will be sent out shortly, should be a fun summer with that team!

Please remember to bring your child’s vacation schedule back as soon as possible as we are trying to finalize the summer staffing schedule.

Staffing update: We were approved for three summer students this year so we welcome Kennedy to the ELCC team on June 18th and Janaia who will be starting to work full-time hours over the next few months. Becky has started at the School Age Site and will be with us until August 31.

A big THANK YOU to the Jones, Schulmeister, Blagdon and Schmidt families for bringing items to our staff appreciation breakfast – it was greatly appreciated!!

Happy Father’s Day to all our Dad’s, Grandpa’s and step-dad’s – hope you have an enjoyable day!

Sunshine Room Early Learning Child Care

The sun is shining and the Sunshine room is ready to go. We are so excited about the warm weather and all the possibilities it brings. We have already been out and about exploring all that nature has to offer. The children are quite fascinated with ants, spiders and all the other small crawling bugs and insects. It is amazing watching them get down onto the ground as close as they can, yet they are careful not to touch them.

Lights, shadow and colour is a topic we have been exploring for the past couple of weeks. The projector was quite a big hit with the children. They showed great flexibility and agility as they made stretches and poses creating unique and funny shadows. Chasing each other's shadows and trying to step on them gave the children great opportunities to show their growth and development of gross motor skills. Lights and reflections were quite an experience too. The turning on and off of flash lights and other different light up materials/equipment also gave the children opportunities to continue developing their fine motor skills. This experience also presented the children with seeing and experiencing contrast between light and shadows. The tea lights were one of the children's favourite manipulative materials . The introduction of colour also brought excitement and ample opportunity to identify different colours and look at our environment in different shades using cellophane.

Thank you so much for supporting our programming by sending in so many exciting light up toys , that made our Glow In The Dark Day that much more special.

We are looking forward to spending more time exploring the outdoors in this warm sunny weather so please always remember to send your little one with a hat and water bottle.

Green Room

It’s been a very busy month in the Green Room and we are so excited that the warm weather is here to stay! This month we spent lots of time getting our garden and pallet forts ready for the summer. We spent a day weeding our garden, then we used spoons to loosen up the dirt and finally we planted our seeds! We can’t wait to watch everything grow! We also added some dirt and grass seed to our pallet forts to turn them into live pallets for the summer.

We were so surprised to come back after the weekend and see that the grass had already started to grow. The children have been so excited to head to the Sunshine Room to fill up our watering cans and help water the garden and grass, and they especially love taking a few buckets of water to add to the sand box! We’ve made some really great sand castles with the wet sand.

We still have being exploring transformation and we have shifted in a new direction. The children have really been into hide and seek now and they love hiding in the room. The often try to squeeze themselves into the smallest space or under our tables. So to create more hiding spaces in our room we have transformed some of our play spaces into forts, they have also being enjoying these spaces when they just want some time alone to read a book or to play by themselves. We’ve also been noticing a lot of things transforming outside like our garden, grass, the road construction and our tree!

Just a few reminders:  With the hot weather please insure you child has a hat, we do have some extras in case you forget, but we are running low on extra hats. 

Please make sure your child has an extra change of clothes or two that are appropriate for the weather. I know sometimes we forget how fast our little ones grow and items may be too small or too warm for the hot weather.

June has arrived, we are hoping the wonderful weather that arrived in May will continue! May was a busy month, the children enjoyed exploring the idea of “What makes planes move?” We painted with wheels, created popsicle airplanes, created a water and sand wheel and flew many places in our airplane – Hawaii, Phoenix and Mexico. Paper airplanes were very popular, after many attempts we finally mastered how to create ones that actually flew. These planes took many flights in the room, in the gym and outside in the park. Thank you to everyone who attended our Mother’s Day muffin morning. It was great to have an opportunity to visit with everyone and the children loved taking care of their Mom’s. Our focus for June will be on “Bugs” specifically “What kinds of bugs do we see?” We will be learning about, ladybugs, dragonflies, caterpillars, spiders, bumblebees, butterflies, ants and beetles. The children have requested a bike day this month, we plan to have it in mid-June. We will send out more information once a date has been chosen.

It is hard to believe the school year is coming to a close and the next one will be the first school year of your child's life!

May was a busy month in our room as preparation for our Mother's Day Tea Party kept us going. The children learned a new song, which they were very proud of and not shy at all to sing for their moms, as well as prepared small gifts for them.

Gathering ingredients for our menu, baking a carrot and an apple cake, preparing fruit and setting the table made the children very proud and anxious to see their mothers coming to the Gold Room that Thursday afternoon. Thank you to all the moms for taking part in this special occasion. Celebrating it gives the children an opportunity to show their love and respect for that special person in their life and extends the connection between home and the center.

Our next event was the second Bicycle Day, in which all the children eagerly participated, showing their skills and of course their bikes, scooters and striders. Walking along the hallway was accompanied by the sounds of bells and honks all day long. The last indoor Bike Day will be on June 20 from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Our interest-based planning took us in many spring related directions, such as catching and observing ladybugs, starting our ant farm, camping and learning about Canadian provinces and territories.

Our observations show that the children love all kinds of scavenger activities and guessing games and as a result, we are preparing many different ones for circle time. To extend their interest, we encourage you to play simple guessing games at home, choosing themes like animals, the alphabet, numbers or children's literature. This is a simple way to prepare your children for Kindergarten.

As you may have noticed, the SPEAK information will be going home on Mondays and Wednesdays, giving parents the opportunity to talk to your children about some important matters. We are now preparing to celebrate Father's Day and organizing our Sport Event for them on Thursday, June 14th. Please reserve that day in your busy calendars.

The kids in the kinder room have really been enjoying the beautiful weather and the opportunity to explore outdoors. We have had the opportunity to go for some mini field trips to prepare the kids for our summer adventures.

We walked half of ring road on one pd day, and walked to colonial school park one morning and finished the adventure with a picnic in our park.

Even though we have spent less time indoor the children have managed to stay very busy! They have been working very hard on projects in groups. So we have focused our activities on team work. We offered a table with lego and asked them to build something together. Anyone that wanted to was able to add pieces wherever they wished however no one was able to remove pieces. They needed to work together to create everyone’s vision. We also one day gave them poster board and markers and suggested they creat the kinder room as a team. Look around the room and add to the board what you see. Some children drew people while others drew the locker area and manipulative shelf. They talked out what they were each drawing when there was a group sitting at the table and when they were sitting alone they looked at what was already on the board and drew something different or added more detail to something already there.

As we near the end of the school year and start to prepare for full days in the kinder room we would like to send a friendly reminder to you all, asking that you please let us know when your child’s last day of kindergarten will be.

Each school is different and it’s important we have bussing arranged accordingly.

We would also like to request that each child have a hat and water bottle available here each day. With the hot weather that has already arrived it’s important to us that we are able to keep the kids hydrated.

SCHOOL AGE SITE

May turned into a hot and sunny month and we took advantage of the weather as much as we could. It is very important that your child has a hat and water bottle at all times. Though we do try to make sure that all items are brought in from outside it is also your child’s responsibility for their own things.

Outside we have been busy playing baseball, basketball, soccer and digging in the sand. Also you can tell by your child’s hands that monkey bars are a favorite; the blisters are appearing every day! While digging, they try to dig far enough down to find water and clay so that at the end of the day there are lots of dirty hands.

Inside the children have been involved in making a wall “Marble Run”. This has been ongoing for two weeks now with everyone giving suggestions, problem solving and helping glue the sticks in place. If you get a chance please come in to take a look and give it a try.

We would like to welcome Becky who is joining our team as a summer student. She has fit in with both the children and the staff and we are excited for her to be with us. Here is a brief bio to introduce her: Hello, My name is Becky. I am 19 years old and live in Leduc. I have my level 2, Early Childhood Development worker certification and will be continuing my education in September to obtain my diploma in Early Learning and Care.

I hope to one day become a pre-school teacher or run my own child care room. Some of my hobbies include photography, art and my cats; I currently have 4 cats and 8 kittens! I am very excited to be spending the summer at the School Age Site and look forward to meeting everyone.

Sadly Chris is leaving us to go back to school. Congratulations Chris, we know that you are going to be a fantastic teacher. He is going to be missed by all of us. Luckily for some of the children they might end up having Chris as a teacher one year. We wish Chris the very best.

Congratulations to Jodie Vesso who will be assuming the role for the School Age Site. Most of the parents already know Jodie so the transition will be smooth.

Congratulation to Ryder who is the book club winner for the month.
