Early Learning Child Care Supervisor Update National Child Day is on November 20th and we have planned our celebration for Friday November 17th. Look for the poster in this newsletter to see what’s scheduled! For more information on National Child Day, please visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/ public-health/services/health-promotion/childhood-adolescence/national-childday.html or https://nationalchildday.ca/ to see what is happening here in Alberta. This year we are excited to celebrate a Child’s Right to BE SAFE! On November 20th, 5 MacEwan students will be returning to complete their four week block placement at our center. They all came for orientation week October 1013, so we are excited to have them return. Every other Friday, students from JE Lapointe school next door have been visiting us for 45 minutes to read stories and play games with the children in every room or at the park. This has been a great partnership with the school and it is fun to see some of the children we took care of years ago re-visiting the center! Have a great month! Jodie

It has been an exciting and loud month in the Sunshine Room. We began the month of October observing the Sunshine Room children enjoying sounds and noises however they could. Stomping their feet, squeezing and crinkling water bottles, bouncing balls in the Teen Center are just some of the things we noticed them doing. We took this and ran with it. We began providing opportunities for the children to explore sound even more. We hung bells and horns from the quiet cube and watched as they jingled and shook the bells and squealed with excitement when the horn was sounded. We also set out pots, pans and utensils out in the Teen center and watched as they banged, clanged and smacked them. When they would smack some pots they would make a high pitched sound and they would cover their ears and other ones required harder tapping to force a deeper, lower sound out of them. It was loud and noisy but through these experiences they were beginning to develop a stronger understanding of pitch, rhythm and timing. We are still busy learning and understanding more about the sounds we can make and create in our room. Please feel free to come in and take a look around our room. We have displayed pictures, information and art depicting just what we are busy learning in our room. We are looking forward to another busy month in the Sunshine Room but as winter approaches we have a couple reminders. With winter weather right around the corner we ask that you keep backpacks and bags out of the lockers, there is a limited space and as snowsuits and winter gear begins to pile up, the space becomes even more limited. We also ask that you make sure your child is dressed appropriately as we spend ample time outside and want to make sure your children are as comfortable as possible as the weather gets colder. Helpful tip: When you are preparing food in the kitchen keep a bottom drawer open with Tupperware in it to keep your child busy. Something as simple as Tupperware can be so fascinating for a child and encourage them to interact with simple household items, no fancy toys necessary!

We wanted to say a big Thank You to everyone who brought in pictures for our Family Tree Project, we are so happy with the way that it turned out. Please remember to keep sending pictures of events or fun things that you guys are doing during the year so we add them to the tree. We are wanting to start another project soon and wanted to give you guys little bit of information about it. Maggie has been talking about her Nanny and Poppy a lot and it has sparked a lot of conversation among the other children about their grandparents. As we listened to the children talk we discovered that each child has a different name that they call their grandparents, we would love to start a documentation board around this observation. If you could please let us know what you child calls their grandparent(s) and even send a picture of your child with their grandparents that would be great. We can’t wait to get started on this project! We are continuing to explore collections in our room with more of a focus on collecting rocks at the moment. Collecting rocks is a huge part of our day when we are in our park and when we are out and about in the community, we want to take this interest in collecting rocks a little farther. We are planning on adding and going on a collection walk with the children to find different types, sizes and textures of rocks to add to our room. We can’t wait to explore this collection with the children and continue to explore this interest a bit more.

The month of October did not bring us the snow that the children have been asking for…they are really looking forward to winter. After many discussions at group time, we decided it is ok for the snow to come after Halloween. Our focus on camping wrapped up mid-October and recently the children have become very interested in hockey. In the gym they have been asking for the hockey sticks, nets and balls. We have also noticed increased requests for “Dance parties” and action songs and games. These interests led to our new focus “How can we use our bodies to create movement?” We will be focusing on the concepts of fast and slow, start and stop and up, down, over and through. We plan on visiting the skate park, exploring with ramps and obstacle courses both inside and out. Simple games will be introduced such as Duck, duck, goose, Follow the leader and What time is it Mr. Wolf? The children will be challenged with climbing and jumping activities and we will be visiting parks to explore different equipment. Just a reminder that toy day is every Friday, please send your child with one toy that is labelled, this will help avoid confusion if there are duplicate toys. The children are welcome to bring books from home any day during the week. This group loves reading and are excited to share books from home. Thank you, Beth, Lorena and Tammy

Fall, a beautiful season we so love, during which Mother Nature uses her full palette of colors, including white this year. Throughout this chilly but colorful October, the Gold Room children have enjoyed the weather to its absolute fullest by participating in daily visits to community parks, the library, and our playground. Some of the activities in October include raking and jumping into piles of leaves at our park, a science experiment using pinecones and observing the effect of moister on them, our favorite guessing games during circle time, creating our geo board and, the most exciting of all, creating a giant sling shot. We welcomed the J.E. Lapointe students who spent time with us, reading, playing and participating in outdoor activities with our children. These visits are a valuable tool to teach our children how to become responsible citizens in the community, as well as how to connect to an older generation, filling the gaps that the age difference may bring. Within our children I am so proud to see great manners, politeness and pride when showing around the classroom. Over the past month we welcomed Rebecca, the MacEwan student on her practicum, who spent one week observing classroom routine, our programming, and playing with the children. She will be back in mid-November for four weeks. Our planning has been featuring a dramatic center transformation into a musical stage with curtains, microphone and musical instruments. Amongst the changes, there will also be a pet hospital equipped with an x-ray machine, and most recently a jail, with props like handcuffs, police hats, and police dogs, just to name a few. To encourage children's empathy we started a group project called "Our Kind Bucket" which praises our kids' kind words and behaviors. Happy fourth Birthday to Jared and Ella! Please check the information board about your child's daily experiences, which is placed by the entrance door for your convenience. Dates to remember: November 15 - our first ice-skating November 17- National Child Day
Kinder Room

October was a very busy month in the kinder room. We began the month very interested in the alphabet, rhyming and storytelling! We practiced our letters in almost every area of our room, and became quite avid writers creating new stories every day. Our word wall filled up very quickly with words the children wanted help spelling. This also helped them with their reading skills as when duplicate words were asked about, the children were helped in searching our word wall to find it! It was quite the exciting experience as they sounded out the word to discover its first letter, then showed great pride as they found it among the countless other words on the wall! Our month then took a bit of a turn as the children became very intrigued by the concept of ramps and rolling. We noticed they were using all sorts of materials from around our room to create ramps for cars, marbles, balls, and even logs! Stay tuned to see what adventures this new interest takes us on! Just a friendly reminder that it is getting colder outside, and being outside every day, the children need to be dressed appropriately. Please make sure you are sending a toque and mittens every day. We also just want to send a quick thank you to all of the parents for continuing to be very diligent about letting us know about your children's schedules and the days they will not be returning from school. It saves us and the bus driver from a lot of worry, so thank you very much! :)

Hope everyone had a great Halloween and didn’t get too scared from all the goblins and witches out there. October was a busy month getting to know more about each other, what our hobbies are and the members of our family. We did activities that included the SAS family word search where we had to find every child and staff names. We do have a prize for the ones that complete the word search but so no one has handed in a completed one. Come on guys get yours completed and handed in. We also had a matching game where the children had to match up each others face. For Thanksgiving, we asked the children “What am I thankful for” Their answers are uploaded on the TV so if you have a chance please take a look. On October 20 we had a PJ day and a dance party. The children love having the lights turned off and dancing away. The children were busy making haunted houses and making clay sculptures as well. Please remember to label your child’s clothing and shoes. Often more than one child has the same style and at times the same size. This happens often with footwear. With the number of children we have here someone may accidently take home the wrong pair of shoes or boots. If the articles are labeled then if things do get mixed up it is very easy to figure whose is whose. Thank you. Have a great month SAS
