Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Place your chairs for a relaxed, but conversational vibe with comfortable movement
Be very precise in your furniture selection, not too little not too much
Create a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors
DECOR ACCENTS
A predominantly whitewashed and tactile space, adding a spectrum of earthy colours with a hint of ocean and sky
Add depth and layering with soft furnishings; hand-woven statement rugs or natural fibre rugs such as Jute, charming linen cushions, and statement floor cushions
Natural elements should feature using metal, timber, and ceramics in Artisan and handcrafted styles
Mediterranean
A haven warmed by the sun, a quiet place to relax. An indoor-outdoor lifestyle with soul ties to the Mediterranean Sea. It’s organic and tactile that is both sumptuous and minimalistic. Sunkissed with a spectrum of earthy colours with a hint of ocean and sky, hold the appeal of an endless summer.
Blur the lines of indoor and outdoor with some strategically placed plants
Exposed wood, in timber beams, coffee tables, bowls, side tables, all building contrast against the whitewashed backdrop
FURNITURE
Craftsmanship is key; lounges using solid timber, wicker, or rattan detail will frame soft ‘sink into me’ cushions
Curves built into furniture to soften raw textures in styling.
Dining tables will be rustic, and worn with much use, reflect the love of food and bringing people together.
KYAL
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Choose a warm timber vanity with textural or curved features, and brushed gold tapware. Finish off the look with an arched mirror
For your tiles select cotto, beige, or cream stone designs, handmade textures, and Moroccan inspired patterns
KITCHENS
Zellige inspired wall tiles are full of personality and create a relaxed atmosphere. Consider both subway and square shapes, and the many different laying patterns to create the exact look you are after for your splashback
Take a step directly into northern Africa by selecting encaustic look floors with motifs inspired by ages gone by
MAIN FLOOR
Go big or go small. An 800x800mm tile or above in warm tones of stone or marble design in matt finishes. Or the other end of the scale is to go small with a 200x200mm sized tile with loads of character, think motifs or rustic terracotta styles
FINISHING TOUCHES
All these details bring it all together, so keep them organic and tactile that is both luxurious and minimalistic
Remember to balance your overall look, don’t layer too many patterns. It’s relaxed and paired back; each element should have space to breathe.

Imagine a blend of vintage and modern furniture, using a mix of bold colours or rich textures, and an eclectic array of artwork and decor accents that reflect your personal style and interests.

Traditional
Always warm and welcoming, this style is timeless and is inspired by high end trends from the past, reminiscent of a five star European classic hotel. It feels familiar and elegant and holds no surprises.
It’s spacious, symmetrical and totally liveable. Finally, thankfully, I’m home.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Symmetry is a significant characteristic of traditional style. Have a focal point to work around, such as a fireplace, rug, or coffee table
Buy in pairs to help build symmetry, such as two lamps, two sofas, and matching artwork
DECOR ACCENTS
Moldings trims and railings are all typical elements in period homes and set the right mood for a traditional style
Choose pillows and accessories with classic emblems
Accessories should include urns, plants, mirrors, framed prints, china, vases, and collections of books. Pairs of objects are recommended to arrange in balanced symmetry
FURNITURE
Use a sofa with rolled arms or tuffed features to add texture and character whilst making a distinctive, traditional statement
When selecting sofas, choose upholstered furniture with classic lines and smooth edges
WINDOW TREATMENTS
Heavy lined, floor-to-ceiling drapes are a signature of traditional interiors. This is a visual trick to make the room look taller and the space airier
LIGHTING
Use your lighting as essential design statements. Choose for a statement chandelier, decorated sconces, and structural table lamps.

The Stylists
Childhood memories. Collections from the sea shore and beyond. Drift wood centrepieces. Coastal is the enduring beach side retreat where city stress fades away in a heartbeat. It’s bright and breezy and where nature takes centre stage.
Tip...
Tiles are an excellent allergy free flooring choice for bedrooms for people who suffer from allergies and asthma. The smoother the tile surface the less likely it is to attract allergens.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Your coastal living room layout needs to be considerate of the outside. Think about adding a window or bi-fold doors to lead from your living room to the outside
When considering your layout, surfaces should be kept simple for an easy transition from in to out whilst working to maximize natural light when shut up
DECOR ACCENTS
Have fun with your decor. Pair woven textures, collected shells and driftwood, and artwork to tell a story
When choosing a rug, think practical for sandy beach days. Something easy to clean that will stand up to busy family gatherings. Incorporate natural fibers such as a jute rug to connect to the outdoors whilst providing practical functionality
Choose your indoor plants with your overall coastal style in mind, Monstera for resort, Bird of paradise for tropical or Ficus for hamptons inspired.
FURNITURE
Especially important for coastal homes are furniture covers for those sandy days. Choose a sofa with easy care covers or add large throws for easy washing
Keep furniture light and airy with white or pale timber accents
WINDOW TREATMENT
Choose white timber shutters for the ultimate coastal vibe. To add some more softness, consider roman blinds for your large windows or bi-fold doors
LIGHTING
With your large window or bi-fold doors, your living room should be feeling light and airy. Use lighting to complement such as downlights with a feature pendant paired with a floor and table lamps.
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Choose white baths and basins with soft curves and brushed tapware with warm colours like brushed gold or copper
Use natural and even textured tiles such as stone or stone look tiles, timber or concrete
Use grout that matches the tile colour
Make it even more spacious by running floor tiles all the way up the walls
Then style with timber or stone accessories (think stool, bath caddy and scrubbing brushes)
MAIN FLOOR TILE
Use timber look planks or large format stone look tiles
KITCHENS
Choose a mixture of matt and natural finishes including timber and stone
Team with finger pull or simple handles
Go for open timber shelves to show off your seaside finds
Select a splashback in natural colours
FINISHING TOUCHES
Furnishings should be neutral or layer with shades of blue or natural greens
Complement with artwork in similar hues (think prints of the ocean or the coast)
Use natural finishings such as sisal or jute rugs
Complete the look with free flowing plants like a string of pearl or hoya.

Scandinavian
Scandi style is like a cozy hug for your home. It’s all about simplicity, with clean lines, natural materials, and a love for neutral tones.
You’ll find plenty of soft textures, warm wood accents, and just the right amount of minimal decor. The result? An inviting space that feels effortlessly stylish and perfectly serene.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Scandinavian design is characterised by its innovative and functional use of space. Consider your living room layout to maximise your space and invest in cabinetry or multilevelled wall shelving storage to save space and add visual interest
DECOR ACCENTS
Time to layer with woollen rugs, faux fur and neutral velvet finishes in similar colours
Choose decorative accents with simple designs
Use throws and pillows with texture and subtle colour
FURNITURE
Wooden furniture is popular in Scandinavian design. Choose a wooden coffee table and cabinetry
Clean lines are important in Scandinavian design. Furniture should have a modern touch with smooth, rounded edges
CLUTTER-FREE
Scandinavian design is characteristically clutter-free and simple. Invest in cabinetry to organize and hide clutter. Choose TV cabinetry that can easily hide wires and connection boxes
WINDOW TREATMENTS
You’ll want to create an inviting feel to your Scandinavian living room. Do so by minimising window treatments to allow for maximum natural lighting
Select light coloured fabrics and sheer curtains
LIGHTING
Scandinavian regions enjoy minimal hours of natural daylight each day so well-considered lighting is a significant characteristic of Scandinavian design
Incorporate different lighting forms in your living room to set the mood, provide functionality, and illuminate your space.
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Go for tiles with light, cool grey and earthy tones and colour match the grout
For cabinetry use light timbers (or timberlook veneers) such as beech or oak
Design with light in mind so position mirrors to reflect existing light
Small elements of metal such as brushed gold or nickel tapware are Scandi-perfect
Style with towels in ether white or cool grey tones with minimal pattern
MAIN FLOOR TILE
Try wood look plank tiles in light hues –they emulate timber and are perfect for wet areas
Use the same colour grout as your tile to avoid patterning
KITCHENS
Choose white, light greys and timbers for cabinetry
Use open shelving, but don’t have too much clutter on show (a couple of recipe books, drinking glasses and plates is fine)
Benchtops using marble or concrete are a great natural choice
FINISHING TOUCHES
Use fresh flowers and real plants to add a living element. Fresh flowers are prominent in the streets of the Scandinavian region
If you want some extra colour, opt for light pastel shades such as blue and/or blush
Keep ornaments to a minimum
Select functional furnishings in natural timber.

Farmhouse
You have permission to be cosy, warm, and a little rough around the edges, as you nestle into the landscape. Farmhouse is a stylish refuge that honours rustic imperfections and is not afraid to re-purpose and up-cycle.
There’s just one problem – your guests won’t want to leave…
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Create a cozy living room by keeping furniture close together. If your living room has a fireplace, anchor your sofas around the fireplace. Ensure there’s plenty of seating and cozy throws for everyone in the family
DECOR ACCENTS
Farmhouse interior designs are known for furniture and accessories packed full of character and personality, so start with a neutral base to build on
FURNITURE
Distressed vintage or antique furniture is what gives the Farmhouse interior design its beauty. Look for an antique coffee table or buffet and hutch to bring personality to your room
Invest in a cozy, pillowy linen sofa that’s large enough for everyone to relax on
Accessorise with soft textures with plenty of throws and cushions
Farmhouse interior design is a careful balance between ornate and cluttered. Decorate with pieces that have personality, but be sure to designate a place for each accessory you choose to exhibit
WINDOW TREATMENT
Choose thick curtains or roman blinds that keep the cozy vibes in and the cold out. Go for a neutrally coloured curtain to balance the room
LIGHTING
Use the lighting to your advantage to create extra warmth and cosiness. Floor and table lamps will help set the scene for cosy evenings while a glass/metal ceiling pendant is the perfect chic addition.
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Go for a light and bright country look or opt for a moodier scheme with contrasting light and dark accents
Choose neutral tiles paired with a light coloured subway
Use traditional rounded tapware and decorative handles in chrome, gold, copper or matt black
If budget allows, pick a feature claw-foot bath
Shaker style cabinetry is perfect
Barn-style wall lights give a simple, but charming ambience
MAIN FLOOR TILE
Stick to earthy tones such as natural timber-look tiles or stone looks
For drama, choose a darker tile with some light and dark rustic highlights
Run the indoor tile to the outdoors
KITCHENS
It’s the centre piece of a country home so choose a big deep ceramic basin
Benchtops should be white or cool grey, or opt for traditional timber
Top with overhead open shelved cabinetry and display dinner sets and glasses
FINISHING TOUCHES
Upcycle for character and charm, or invest in well-built solid timber pieces
Layer soft furnishings in florals, plaids and stripes
Big baskets make great storage.

Modern
Life is busy. You’re busy. The simplicity of a modern palette is the perfect panacea to a hectic schedule featuring a clutter free, largely neutral décor. Modern is restrained, but bespoke when a bold splash of colour or dynamic forms are used. No need for loads of accessories or distracting patterns in your space.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
An open plan layout lends itself nicely to the modern style. Ensure well calculated spacing between each zone to maintain an open and clutter-free feel
DECOR ACCENTS
Approach accessories and decor with a ‘less is more’ mindset. Go for large pieces of art over multiple small items
Remember smooth, clean lines when selecting artwork
FURNITURE
A low-lying sofa that’s a similar height to your dining table will create a smooth line of sight, working to the open plan, light and spacious feeling
Buy a sofa in natural fabrics such as linen or leather
Cabinetry should be sleek with clean lines to hide the clutter
Add a touch of reflective material with a statement, glass top coffee table
WINDOW TREATMENT
Unadorned windows are best for maximum natural light. If window treatments are required in your living room, opt for floor to ceiling curtains in natural, light fabric
LIGHTING
With natural light as a key characteristic of modern style, ensure your lighting is well articulated to compliment natural lighting whilst creating ambiance at night. Think recessed ceiling lighting to play on the straight line characteristics of the style and a feature floor and table lamp in steel, chrome, or glass.
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Keep your space clutter free
Be brave and select a hero tile like a 3D tile on the wall or a geometric floor tile
Choose wall hung vanities and toilet to get a ‘clean’ look
Personalise your bathroom with a simple decor item or splash of greenery
MAIN FLOOR TILE
You can’t go wrong with really big ‘show stopper’ tiles
Use the same tile throughout, even through to the outdoors, to create a spacious feel
KITCHENS
Use only one or two colours for cabinetry and integrate appliances
Top with light polished surfaces
FINISHING TOUCHES
Choose sleek low lying furniture and consider some plastics and glass
Look for artwork that has similar tones to your overall colour scheme
Finish with a sleek pendant light or hidden LED lighting.

Contemporary
Look around, there’s sensory overload; sights, smells, sounds. Not in your home though. Here, less is so much more. In fact, what’s not there is as telling as what is!
It is simple line and form and a deep appreciation of the very latest in man’s design endeavours that makes this style supremely liveable.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
A contemporary interior lends itself to a showcase of space rather than things. Living room layouts should have this design principle in mind to pare back on clutter and furniture items
DECOR ACCENTS
Contemporary living rooms should be kept to neutrals, black and white colours, but feel free to accent your palette with bright, bold colours to play against the neutral base tones
Go for a neutral wall colour to allow for bold accessories, or pastel wall colours with neutral trims. If you have a bold wall colour, ensure neutrals are used in all accessories and furniture
Lines are a dominant characteristic in the contemporary style. Whether it’s a vertical, horizontal or curve, ensure your living room incorporates lines. Do so in the architectural details such as high ceilings, bare windows, or geometric shapes in wall art and sculptures
Choose decorative cushions with clean geometric shapes and a shot of colour and texture
Frame artwork with high-gloss, matte black, natural wood, or metal finishes. If using multiple pieces of wall art, hang them close together to give the illusion of one large piece of art
Fussy/detailed prints should be avoided since they confuse the plain space that is key to a contemporary-style home. Two-tone large scale designs on a canvas work well
Plants and flowers should be large and dramatic in simple containers. Large blooms with interesting leaves work better than small arrangements
FURNITURE
Take advantage of furniture to make a bold statement in your living room while keeping it simple and uncluttered
Furniture should incorporate either clean, smooth edges, or distinct sweeping curves
Your sofa should be black, white, or neutral in natural fibers to add texture (wool, cotton, linen).
Wet Area Style Checklist
BATHROOMS
Stick to a dual colour palette and select up to three different tiles that work in harmony
Run your tiles to the ceiling
If your room doesn’t have much natural light, choose tiles from a light palette. If it’s well lit, go dark
Use freestanding cabinetry and recess the toilet
Choose modern tapware in brushed nickel, chrome, champagne or matt black
MAIN FLOOR TILE
Select simple, smoother finishes like polished concrete, large tiles or wood look replicate tiles
KITCHENS
Keep lines clean with smooth edges, concealed hinges and geometric handles or subtle knobs
Be bold and dramatic with tile and marbled feature walls and splashbacks
Keep countertops clear and highlight with impressive feature taps
FINISHING TOUCHES
Select simple, big and bold furniture
Large indoor plants give dramatic impact.

Industrial
Hey You. Take me as I come with all my imperfections and exposed elements.
Industrial sees beauty in the raw, the overlooked and even neglected. It’s functional and stylish with surfaces that are not traditional, often stripped back and even salvaged. Its character is utilitarian and certainly doesn’t apologise.
Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
Industrial style is popular in lofts and old buildings. When creating the style at home, consider a layout that gives your living room the illusion of space and height
Use bookshelves and framing to divide the room
DECOR ACCENTS
Have fun with the family and paint a wall with chalk-board paint. A functional tool for family organisation that doubles as a piece of art
Decorate with black and white prints - think cityscapes, big text, pop-art, or antique-style prints
Install exposed shelves and fill them with books and layered artwork for a design statement that’s as functional for the family as it is stylish
FURNITURE
With the harsh elements of exposed materials, choose a large, comfortable, slouchy sofa, adorned with different textured throws and cushions
The relaxed industrial style lends itself perfectly to beanbags and ottomans
WINDOW TREATMENT
Exposed windows are common elements in industrial design. Opt for shutters for light and full-length curtains to help build the illusion of high ceilings
LIGHTING
Over-sized floor lamps are an iconic industrial design element. Mix and match with table lamps or buy from the same family for a more considered look.
Wet Area Style Checklist

SUPER TIPS FOR Sparkling walls and floors
Tiles are a perfect choice for floors and walls.
They’re affordable, low maintenance and durable, and great for people with health conditions like asthma. Under tile heating makes them suitable no matter where you live.
Contemporary decor puts tiles at the centre of design and not just for traditional areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Tiles are now part of an entire home design; they’re being used on walls to create art gallery inspired features, and across living areas into the outdoors to create a wonderful feel of space.
It’s easy to keep tiles looking great, just follow these tips.
GENERAL CLEANING
◊ Sweep, or better still, vacuum tiles regularly so dirt doesn’t build up
◊ Clean tiles with mild detergent or household cleaner (no acid or alkaline), or go natural by mixing vinegar and warm water
◊ Avoid abrasive cleaners (powders and gritty cream) as they can scratch and make tiles harder to clean
◊ Remove a stubborn spot by gently scrubbing with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water
PREVENT DAMAGE
Avoid scratches by using gliders under furniture and good mats at the front door to keep out grit. Ditch the high heels if your floors are high gloss.
Just one more. Always buy an extra box of tiles in case you need some spares in the future.
