Reasons Why Tiles

Stand the Test of Time

The Style Issue New releases & a new era

Hello to 2020, a new decade and a new era for Beaumonts as we celebrate our 60th birthday.

This is a special year as we reflect on our history, changing trends over the years, and the people that made it all possible. To commemorate the milestone, we are delighted to present you with our new-look quarterly magazine. ‘Home inspired’ replaces the title ‘Incoming’, and contains the new releases you have come to love, together with extra tips and features. In this issue, Beaumont Tiles Design Specialist Christie Woods reflects on her family roots in the company and their journey to sixty years, along with the tile styles that defined each decade since. Over the year we will introduce you to more great Beaumonts stories and share expertise gained through sixty years in the tile industry. Thank you for sharing the journey, keeping the story going and continuing to say I Chose Beaumonts. From our family to yours, welcome to Home inspired.

Country Chic You have permission to be cosy, comfortable, warm and charming (of course). All are characteristics of Country Chic. It’s an atmospheric relaxed style that honours rustic imperfection and is not afraid to be a little heavy handed with furnishings and florals. There’s just one problem – your guests won’t want to leave…

Scandinavian

Classic Traditional

Urban Industrial

Once the domain of architects and high end designers, the secret of Scandi is out and it’s now one of the most popular and easily achieved decors of them all! It’s functional, understated and organic and perfect for smaller spaces. Hand crafted textures and materials, and a light decorative touch, make it a calming and affordable delight.

Always warm and welcoming, this style is timeless and is inspired by high end trends from the past, reminiscent of a five star European classic hotel. It feels familiar and elegant and holds no surprises. It’s spacious, symmetrical and totally liveable. Finally, thankfully, I’m home.

Hey you! Take me as I come with all my imperfections and exposed elements. Urban industrial sees beauty in the raw, the overlooked and even neglected. It’s functional and stylish with surfaces that are not traditional, often stripped back and even salvaged. Its character is utilitarian and certainly doesn’t apologise.

Eclectic Bohemian

Global Fusion

Coastal

Throw away the rule book and embrace your inner intuition. It’s your happy space. It’s a nod to methodical mismatching that weaves together favourite items from any style, place, or life stage. Every piece is a part of them because it’s lovingly hand-picked.

You are the ultimate curator of your own space. You immerse yourself in the world at large with all its colours, sights and smells. Inspired by exotic, ethnic and tribal design, it’s just the inspiration you need to book your next uncharted destination.

Childhood memories. Collections from the sea shore and beyond. Drift wood centrepieces. Coastal is the enduring beach side retreat where city stress fades away in a heartbeat. It’s bright and breezy and where nature takes centre stage.

Modern

Contemporary

Retro Vintage

Life is busy. You’re busy. The simplicity of a modern palette is the perfect panacea to a hectic schedule featuring a clutter free, largely neutral décor. Modern is restrained but bespoke when a bold splash of colour or dynamic forms are used. No need for loads of accessories or distracting patterns in your space.

Look around, there’s sensory overload; sights, smells, sounds. Not in your home though. Here, less is so much more. In fact, what’s not there is as telling as what is! It is simple line and form and a deep appreciation of the very latest in man’s design endeavours that makes this style supremely liveable.

Twist, shake and shout - this is fun with loads of flair! A real nod to post war design – the 50’s to 70’s - where we threw off the shackles of austerity. A time of experimentation in art, gadgets, music and fashion. You’ll give old-school themes a modern take. Take any hand-picked feature, form or geometric shape to create a distinct impression.

A story of style with Christie Wood

60 Years of Beaumont Tiles The Beaumont Tiles story is one of passion and determination. In 1960 RJ

Beaumont established Beaumont Tiles from his family home. Unable to find great tiles himself, as well as hearing from builders with the same frustrations, he set out sourcing and importing the best tiles for any budget. Today, Beaumonts has become an iconic national tile company with over 110 outlets and shows no signs of slowing down. Christie Wood is Beaumont Tiles Design Specialist as well as RJ Beaumont’s granddaughter. She reflects on her family’s journey and the changing trends over the years.

60 years is a long time. There is a lot of history in it. My family’s history is in this company, and I love the memories that come through to make this story. I am taking you on a journey. A journey of trends, family and passion for the product and industry.

The sixties were a very exciting time; it was a time of new ideas, and pushing the boundaries of society and making change. The 60s were everything from the traditional to the groovy. The paired back Mid Century design movement gave way to the psychedelic later in the decade. My Poppa, RJ Beaumont loved push boundaries and take calculated risks, but when it came to his own bathroom only the best would do. In the early 60s his tile choices for his own home was both upmarket and innovative for the time. As a whole, Australia’s most popular floors in the 60’s were unglazed mosaic tiles. And for the walls, some of us might remember the ‘Chicken tiles’, in which Lilac vein was by far the most popular. 1970s started with excess and over the top interiors, with pop art and vibrant colours taking advantage of new manufacturing technologies. It then settled into more of a homely return to nature when the recession hit. Australia’s favourite walls were - White, almond and muted yellow colours, often with floral motifs, in gloss 150x150 size. My dad Bob also took the mindset of pushing boundaries and taking risks. We had tiles in the living, kitchen and dining areas... people thought he was mad. The only other people at the time doing the same were immigrants from Italy and Greece where it was normal to them, and dad really embraced this. The 1980’s was the decade of big hair, big phones, Pac-man, MTV, Personal Computers, shoulder pads and pastel everything. Tile looks were still mostly remaining neutral with browns or variations. 200x200 sizes started; Floral friezes running horizontally around the room and geometric patterns starting making waves.

12

The 1990s is often remembered as a decade of relative peace and prosperity. Decoration was very romantic and feminine. We painted our walls with sponges or stencilling, had canopy beds, curtains that ended in puddles on the floor and country style gingham and ruffles. Tile looks played on nature with stone or marble looks and matching frieze tiles with floral patterns through them. 75x150 square edge tile brick bond lay was the most popular. To see in the new century, we started with Minimalism and Zen inspired spaces. Finished off with Maximillism choosing heavy damask and chandeliers. This was reflected in tile patterns of minimalistic design and concrete even started to emerge. There was every form of coffee brown colours; espresso, latte, chocolate, and later the damask patterns mimicked the very popular wallpaper featured walls. The 2010’s had an unconfident start due to the post-recession aftermath. There were cautious shoppers who only chose beige, grey or maybe blue. But it was also a time of being crafty and inventive. We saw IKEA hacks, and DIY TV shows to encourage our way. And the Scandi style was extensively documented on Instagram and Pinterest. Ink jet tile technology spread like wildfire globally, because of its ability to replicate the look of natural materials. Each piece has the ability to have high variation between each tile. Additionally, the sizes of tiles really exploded with advances in technology, and we are seeing 3000x1000 slab tiles thanks to this. As well as innovative slip-resistance technology making one tile capable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Tile care & maintenance

Lagoon Almond

Keep your tiles looking their best! Congratulations - your tiles are down and you are ready to enjoy them. Here are some helpful tips to keep them looking their best!

1. Keep spares for repairs When you first buy tiles it's important to keep a few spares for repairs, just in case of any unforeseen damage. If you are planning to tile additional areas with the same tiles, order them now to ensure consistency of shade as tiles vary slightly between batches.

2. Protect your tiles Use felt gliders under your furniture to prevent potential scratching. Door mats are a must have for any entrance to catch dust and grit before it makes a way into your home.

3. Maintain your tiles Tiles are hard wearing, eco-friendly and they do not dent or stain as easily as other flooring materials. With some simple protection measures and light regular cleaning your tiles will last, and look fantastic for many years to come!

Microtec textured tiles create seamless transitions between multiple areas and are easy to maintain. Follow these steps to keep your Microtec textured tiles looking good as new.

Newly laid tiles

◊ ◊

24 hours after the grout has dried, tiles should be washed with Lithofin Cement Residue Remover following the instructions on the bottle.

HOW TO MAINTAIN

If you notice a dull haze just after your new tiles are laid, or you are finding that your tiles are getting dirty very quickly don’t panic! This will likely be grout residue. The good news is that it’s easily washed off with Lithofin Cement Residue Remover by following the instructions on the label.

For initial cleaning of Microtec Textured tiles

we recommend

Lithofin Cement Residue Remover

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Let the cleaner dwell for approximately 10 minutes

outdoor tiles ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Hose the area down to wet the surface. Scrub or sweep with a strong bristled broom. Miracle Tile & Stone cleaner is ideal for removing mild grime. To finish, hose the area and remove excess dirt left behind. For larger areas, work in sections starting closest to the house and work away from the wall.

Scrub the surface with a doodle pad or stiff bristle brush Mop up residue Wash with Lithofin KF Vitra-Clean as a final step

HOW TO MAINTAIN

grout lines HOW TO MAINTAIN

indoor tiles

◊ ◊

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Vacuum or sweep the tiles to remove loose dust and grit from the surface. For a thorough clean use Miracle Tile & Stone Cleaner or Lithofin KF Vitra-Clean, with warm water and a damp microfibre mop. The mop should ‘grab’ the surface and lift off most daily grime with a little pressure. A damp microfibre mop is better than a wet mop for a streak-free clean (avoid the use of cotton and sponge mops). For a home-made solution, use hot water and a dash of methylated spirits. Avoid all soap based products as they can leave a thin film on the tiles that will attract more dirt. Work from one side of the room to the other, and avoid walking on the tiles until they are dry. Steam mops are a popular alternative for owners of polished porcelain tiles. Never use polishes or gritty, abrasive cleaners on tiles.

Once your tiles are laid, we recommend sealing your grout with Miracle Spray On Grout Sealer. It is simple to apply: just spray and wipe. It won't affect the colour of your grout and seals the surface to assist in ongoing cleaning. To refresh grout, use the Miracle Tile and Stone Cleaner and a brush, available from Beaumont Tiles.

For everyday cleaning

we recommend Lithofin KF Vitra-Clean

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Use on tiles, grout, porcelain, stone Safe for regular use Strong enough for stubborn spots Use indoors and outdoors No odours Non toxic

We stock a range of specialist cleaners. If you are experiencing stubborn staining, ask our trained sales team for advice. We have a great resource of tile cleaning and maintenance information on our website. Check it out at tile.com.au

5 Reasons why tiles Stand the test of time

42

Why tiles? They’re one of the most practical materials ever made and have proven their

durability and beauty over thousands of years. The Romans used ceramics to create magnificent decorative effects in their palaces and public areas. Floors tiled in ancient Rome are still in use today. Tiles are used across the entire home; bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, bedrooms, walls and outdoors. With new manufacturing methods like digital printing and large format cutting, there are tiles for every style, design and space. With an average lifespan that far exceeds most other flooring options, and even often pushes the 100-year mark, tiles are one of the most durable materials you can choose for your home. Tiles are among the most durable products around. In fact, tiles are so durable that there are hundreds of listings of pre1800 ceramic and porcelain tiles on sale throughout the world. The same can’t be said for other flooring products such as carpet, that needs replacing after as little as five years, or laminate timber flooring, with a lifespan that can be as short as 10 years. Rapid Renovation expert Naomi Findlay, who helps Australians maximise their property investment, says tiles are “a go-to-choice when you are looking for a long lasting and good-looking flooring option.” And because they’ve got so much staying power, tiles are a fantastic investment for your home.

5 Reasons Why Tiles go the Distance: We might even hear you saying I Chose Beaumonts in another sixty years!

1

They are scratch resistant: Porcelain tiles shine bright like a diamond – and they’re almost as tough! As the highest-rated flooring material for hardness, tiles are remarkably difficult to scratch. Try with all your might, you’re going to struggle to scratch a gorgeous tile floor.

2

Tiles are high-heel friendly: Love your heels but worried your floor won’t? You can trample over tiles in your tallest stilettos all day long with no fear. Tiles are the equivalent hardness of Topaz and Quartz on the Hardness Scale. That means tiles are pretty well immune to the harshest of treatment - including high heel pit marks.

3

They are termite and wood-worm proof: A survey by CSIRO suggests that one in three dwellings have termites within the property boundary and many of those homes are at risk, particularly those with termite food available such as untreated wood and wood products. A benefit of tiles is that they are immune to these highly destructive pests which the Australian Institute of Architects suggests attacked 130,000 Australian homes in a year, with estimates of $1.5 billion in damage.

44

4

They don’t absorb or emit odours:

Flooring takes the brunt of food and liquid spills, muddy footy boots and animal accidents, resulting in uninvited odours despite the best cleaning efforts. For some flooring choices, such as wood, high humidity and water can produce a musty smell, particularly when the room receives no ventilation or natural sunlight. Carpet, timber and vinyl flooring are all like a big sponge – they absorb odour like a sponge absorbs water, even when sealed. Non-porous or impervious flooring such as glazed porcelain and ceramic tiles do not absorb soils or moisture.

They are water resistant: It is not just the wet areas of the home, such as bathrooms and kitchens that are likely to get liquid on them. Kids, pets and parties are among the spill inducing scenarios that can see the lounge room, dining room and bedroom floors become soaked – potentially having long term effect on the floor. Then there are always wet feet from a swim at the pool or beach, which are unavoidable during the summer months. Former Block-heads Simon and Shannon Vos, who, when not running their design and construction business, love getting out in the surf year-round. They say that while most flooring will absorb moisture, tiles are the ideal waterproof flooring. “The tile’s durable glaze on top of the surface does not let liquid seep through,” says Simon. “Tiles are virtually impenetrable and will not let liquids soak in, allowing for easy maintenance and worry-free cleaning,” says Shannon.

Beaumont Tiles presents

Trending Media Event tile.com.au

51

Each January, Beaumont Tiles is privileged to present ‘Trending’ to a range

of media and design professionals. The yearly event is a snapshot of the hottest predicted tile and bathroomware trends, as well as technological advancements for the upcoming year. This year’s event was held at the Queen Victoria building, Sydney, a stunning backdrop with pastel pinks and marbles befitting the trending themes. A result of carefully analysing industry and consumer insights from both local and global perspectives; together with attendance to the worlds largest tile design exhibitions, and in conjunction with style forecasts from industry trend leaders such as SCOUT, the Beaumonts team forecast the most relevant products for each of the retail, residential and commercial sectors. This year was particularly significant for Beaumont Tiles celebrating 60 years. And so, the show began with a treat for guests, taking them down tile trend memory lane and the journey of Beaumonts over the past 60 years.

52

When R J Beaumont founded Beaumont Tiles with a single store in Adelaide, unglazed mosaic floor tiles were the Aussie go to for all bathroom design. Fast forward six decades and tile selections have notably shifted to embrace colour, texture, size and pattern. The styles and technologies that Beaumont’s has introduced to Australia has meant that everyone from mum and dad DIYers right through to commercial builders have had easy access to the latest advancements in products that make their dream projects simple to achieve. Recent examples of this are Beaumonts exclusive slab tiles sized up to 3-metre tiles, in-store Exclusive Visualiser, InstaLay underlay and Microtec tile technologies. And it is this continued push for innovation that you can see reflected in Beaumonts ‘trends to watch’ of 2020.

tile.com.au

53

At the media event, the six styles to watch in 2020 were revealed. Expect to see your favourite tiles of the year inspired by some of these key elements: Unearthed Life Worn and treasured, Unearthed Life reflects people’s desire to explore the purity of objects. Think unfinished materials and rustic textures, misshapen ceramics and an open celebration of imperfection. Referenced Life Lovers of luxury from every era will be in their element with Referenced Life. Referenced motifs from art deco, Bauhaus, 40s, 70s and soul are all blurred to create a soft medley of iconic design notes that is warm and inviting in appearance. Foraged Life Eclectic and creative, Foraged Life takes elements from both Scandinavian and Russian design, blending them into an organic wood-like setting. Earthy tones, with a casual and relaxed aura that is eclectic and creative, are the best way to achieve this look.

54

Life Kind Mass consumption is ebbing, and in its place is a paring back of our need to acquire unnecessary items and taking a more mindful approach. From this the term ‘slow-sumption’ has been coined, and Life Kind reflects this broader social consciousness towards responsible living. Hybrid Life Online and offline, urban and coastal – as Australians our lives have blurred, worlds collide and shift the way we engage with spaces and each other. These experiences, observations and interactions are creating forward-thinking spaces, and Hybrid Life is the design interpretation of this. Life Agenda Life Agenda is an incredible hierarchy of elements spanning handwoven cloth textures, romantic timber patinas, rich colour pallets of deep blues, burgundy and bronze. Then contrasted with pops of grey and green.
