Living Room Style Checklist
LAYOUT
A contemporary interior lends itself to a showcase of space rather than things. Living room layouts should have this design principle in mind to pare back on clutter and furniture items
DECOR ACCENTS
Contemporary living rooms should be kept to neutrals, black and white colours, but feel free to accent your palette with bright, bold colours to play against the neutral base tones
Go for a neutral wall colour to allow for bold accessories, or pastel wall colours with neutral trims. If you have a bold wall colour, ensure neutrals are used in all accessories and furniture
Lines are a dominant characteristic in the contemporary style. Whether it’s a vertical, horizontal or curve, ensure your living room incorporates lines. Do so in the architectural details such as high ceilings, bare windows, or geometric shapes in wall art and sculptures
Choose decorative cushions with clean geometric shapes and a shot of colour and texture
Frame artwork with high-gloss, matte black, natural wood, or metal finishes. If using multiple pieces of wall art, hang them close together to give the illusion of one large piece of art
Fussy/detailed prints should be avoided since they confuse the plain space that is key to a contemporary-style home. Two-tone large scale designs on a canvas work well
Plants and flowers should be large and dramatic in simple containers. Large blooms with interesting leaves work better than small arrangements
FURNITURE
Take advantage of furniture to make a bold statement in your living room while keeping it simple and uncluttered
Furniture should incorporate either clean, smooth edges, or distinct sweeping curves
Your sofa should be black, white, or neutral in natural fibers to add texture (wool, cotton, linen).

BATHROOMS
Stick to a dual colour palette and select up to three different tiles that work in harmony
Run your tiles to the ceiling
If your room doesn’t have much natural light, choose tiles from a light palette. If it’s well lit, go dark
Use freestanding cabinetry and recess the toilet
Choose modern tapware in brushed nickel, chrome, champagne or matt black
MAIN FLOOR TILE
Select simple, smoother finishes like polished concrete, large tiles or wood look replicate tiles
KITCHENS
Keep lines clean with smooth edges, concealed hinges and geometric handles or subtle knobs
Be bold and dramatic with tile and marbled feature walls and splashbacks
Keep countertops clear and highlight with impressive feature taps
