DIY made easy! Laying natural stone We recommend using professional installers for our stone products; but the careful and thorough do-it-yourselfer can also achieve a professional-looking finish. Our staff are always available with helpful advice and tips, and we can recommend a professional installer if you choose to use one. Our preferred method is to fix with a cement-based or flexible adhesive onto a concrete slab. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines when using adhesives and sealers. The key to a successful installation is to back-butter each piece of stone as it is being laid, in addition to the adhesive applied to the substrate.

Adhesive: This is our preferred laying method. We use and recommend Ardex and CTA adhesives and our staff can help find the right adhesive for your job. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Mortar: The mortar bed should be 20mm thick with no voids and evenly spread. Remove all loose material from the back of the paver before laying. Always wet the pavers down prior to laying to wash any dust that has accumulated in the warehouse or during shipping. The back of the paving stone should have the slurry mix applied in an even coating 1–2mm thick using a thick paint brush. Place the paving stone into position gently tapping down to the desired level with a white rubber mallet. Remove all excess material from the surface of the paving stone using a clean sponge with clean water.

Grouting: Use a high grade pre-bagged grout suitable for outdoor application and joints of between 3-7mm.
