Clarins Ireland support bee survival project with Maynooth University Nature has always been a primary source of inspiration for the Clarins Group. The Clarins Group believe in beauty that respects the planet. This respect is an integral part of core brand values since Jacques Courtin first developed his iconic treatment oils way back in 1954 to present day and beyond. From recyclable packaging to responsibly sourced ingredients, fair trade agreements and biodegradable formulas, Clarins Group support a circular economy. It is this core value that has led Clarins Ireland to support a 2 year research project conducted in the Maynooth University Department of Biology. The research will be conducted by Rachel Ward under the supervision of Professor Kevin Kavanagh and Dr. Mary Coffey (University of Limerick). The project will examine the immune response of winter bees, which can live for up to six months, but may be susceptible to infection. The project will also analyse the effect of different treatments on the immune system of bees and identify the optimum time for treatment to ensure survival of hives through the winter. Eoghan O’Sullivan, General Manager, Clarins Ireland said: ‘We at Clarins Ireland are delighted to sponsor this 2 year research project with Maynooth University. As a company, Clarins Group uses over 250 plants and flowers in the formulation of our products. Honey bee’s and their role in our natural environment, now more than ever, is vital. It is important that we understand how to improve Irish bee health and survival rates through the winter period. We believe this can be done through proactively researching on immune system best practice. The importance of this study will allow other countries and bee keeping communities to analyse, interpret and improve the survival rates of the over-wintering bee.’

Insects are responsible for pollinating a wide range of food crops which account for approximately 35% of our food intake with a global value of $135 billion. However, insect populations are in decline worldwide due to changes in climate, emergence of new pathogens and recent developments in agriculture. As well as producing honey, Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators and their populations are also under threat. Beekeepers face many problems in maintaining populations of honey bees in Ireland and can lose up to 25% of their hives each year due to disease or adverse weather conditions. Professor Kevin Kavanagh said: ‘Honey bee populations are under serious threat from disease and toxins in the environment. This project which is supported by Clarins Ireland, will examine the immune system of over-wintering honey bees and help develop new strategies to enable them survive the effect of pathogens and toxins. It will make a significant contribution to reducing the losses of bee hives each year in Ireland.’ The results of this project will greatly assist Irish beekeepers in maintaining bee populations and the findings will also have direct benefits for beekeepers in other European countries.

Are you washing your hair the right way? We’ve all experienced the bad hair day, when your usually luscious locks just won’t tame. Or that day when, even though you’ve washed your hair, it has that “my roots had an incident with the chip-pan” look. Maybe you’ve heard people say that you shouldn’t wash your hair so much as it strips away your natural oils. If you’ve tried going without washing your hair, then you’ll know that it doesn’t make it feel clean. If you can relate then we have a new trend that will make your hair look and feel great! We’re not talking dry shampoo, we’re talking no-poo or co-washing! Shampoos, even the “natural” ones contain nasty detergents that strip natural oils from your hair. No-poo or co-washing involves washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo! Follow these short steps below and your hair will look and feel fantastic! 1.Completely wet your hair before you begin your co-wash. 2.Use a generous amount of conditioner (you will need a full palm if you have long thick hair). 3.Massage into your scalp and out to the ends for two to three minutes. 4.Brush your hair with a wide tooth comb or a brush. 5.Then the most important step - rinse completely (and we mean completely!) 6.Pat your hair with a soft towel to remove the bulk of wetness and allow it to dry naturally. You should immediately notice a change in the texture of your hair and if you suffer from little flyaway fuzzy strands, they should rest comfortably without the need to apply taming products. Try it and let us know what you think!

FIVE SQUATS YOU SHOULD DO EVERY DAY

Whether your job involves being on your feet for eight hours or sitting at a desk, a lack of daily squats could be limiting your range of motion. Squatting brings the hip into flexion. Your hip is surrounded by fascia (connective tissue) which can become stiff if you do not move sufficiently. In later years, this lack of squat could dramatically impact your agility. Worry not as we have five squats that you can easily add to a normal day allowing you to maintain the vitality of your fascia, keeping you agile.

The teeth-brushing squat - first thing in the morning when you go to the bathroom to brush your teeth, squat down for the minute or so that you are brushing. Roll the bathroom rug and put it under your heels if your heels don’t come to the floor in the squat. The toilet squat - put a small step in front of your toilet so you can squat while sitting on the loo. Not only is this good for your hips, it’s also the correct, pelvic floor safe position for defecation. The office squat - Roll your chair back behind you and squat until your butt just touches the seat, then stand up squeezing your glutes. Repeat 5 times. Your colleagues may think you strange the first time you do it, but after a week, they will want to do it too! The TV squat - Ditch the sofa and squat on the floor in front of the TV when you are bingeing on Netflix. You can lean your back against the sofa allowing you to relax completely in this supported position. The bed squat - my favorite is the bed squat! This is a passive squat that you do face down (also know as wide Instagram:

legged child’s pose!). Bring your big toes to touch

behind you, spread your knees wide, sit your bum on

your legs.

Making small changes every day will soon accumulate into more substantial changes resulting in improvements to your range of motion. Making these changes a lifestyle is the greatest gift you can give your future self!

THE INSTAFASHION BLOGGER. Who better to trust than bloggers you’ve been following and admiring for years? There are over 310 million bloggers worldwide, 52% of which, write about products and their opinions on brands, grabbing the attention of 1.4 billion, active internet users who consult blogs for products and to keep up to date with trends and ideas.

The fashion of Helena Bordon has flown largely under wings of bloggers like Chiara Ferragni and Camila Coelho at Fashion Weeks, so sitting front row at very prestigious events is no big deal for her. A digital influencer’s stamp of approval is the epitome of a successful product in a world where photos are photo-shopped, reviews fabricated, commercials exaggerated and ads edited, corrected, revised and modified.

By Eider Leite

Bloggers with a huge following add credibility to a product, bloggers have built a relationship with their followers and gained popularity over the course of many years, now forming some of the most trusted sources, they are now more influential than ever, internet users, followers and devotees feel as if they know bloggers personally.

Bloggers and digital influencers are modern day celebrities. We are in awe of the lives they are or at least appear to be living through their daily outings, their purchases and even their views on current events. So, whilst they don’t seem to be “selling” products; we’re encouraged to buy into their lifestyles.

Helena Bordon Ig (Helena Bordon) who is the daughter of former Vogue Brazil style director Donata Meirelles, is one of the most joyfully well-dressed people in the street style game. A glance through even a few of the photos captured of her at shows like Miu Miu, Chanel, and John Galliano is bound to bring a smile to your face, she's almost always snapped laughing or smiling, and her clothes are bright, colourful, statement-making, and unapologetically happy. One of the most important and intriguing things about clothing is how it moves when you walk, and Bordon clearly has a poignant understanding of this. The way she puts disparately stylish things together is just so good, Bordon's sense of style is notable because she's not afraid to wear pretty much any combination of colours and prints.

Beat work stress with these 6 simple steps Are you feeling overwhelmed and anxious with the sheer volume of work on your plate right now? Sometimes it feels that no matter how much we do, our work is never done. Work stress can make you feel unorganized and out of control, so it’s best to take action early to prevent burnout. With these simple steps, you should feel lighter and more in control within a few days. 1. Make a list - when we get stressed, it’s easy to forget tasks as our mind gets preoccupied with worry. You can use a digital tracker like Trello or buy yourself a good notepad and make a list of tasks to help you stay on track. 2. Take breaks - when we are busy and stressed, it’s easy to skip breaks in an effort to catch up, but this can have the opposite effect. Take small breaks to reset your brain, maybe going for a walk with a colleague or just relaxing over a cup of tea. 3. Create blissful moments - dedicate 20 minutes to focus on a given task and reward yourself with a blissful moment: Close your eyes, breathe deeply and visualize a time or place in your life when you were happy and relaxed. Feel the lovely energy of that moment. 4. Say no - don’t be a martyr by taking on more than your time permits. Say no to tasks that are not your responsibility if you do not have the bandwidth to do them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

5. Exercise every day - this can be as simple as going for a brisk walk after lunch or attending a local fitness class. Exercise is not only important for physical health but also for mental health as it produces endorphins which help brighten your mood. 6. Be kind to yourself - we are often our own harshest critic, which can magnify the impact of work stress. If you struggle with self compassion, try to treat yourself as you would another. Forgive your own mistakes and give yourself some love.

Founder and event organiser, Sarah-Jane Vincent, who is also the owner of Miss Content Creative said, “In today’s modern world, disruptive technology is rapidly changing the way consumers interact and engage with brands. This presents a number of challenges for businesses, therefore it is vital for them to learn how to embrace social and digital technologies to ensure they remain relevant and work smarter as an industry. Over the years, I’ve attended many conferences that were lacking the FUN or ACTIONABLE elements. Being part of the educational and IT industry for over 15 years, with a passion for teaching, and digital social innovations, I wanted to combine both. When you’re having fun, you’ll engage and learn more! It makes it easier to network and build better relationships. The majority of digital marketing or tech conferences are taking place in Dublin but times are changing and the Southeast is full of bright opportunities for businesses and individuals. Knowing and working with so many organisations in Wexford and surrounding counties, I felt it was paramount to bring a digital marketing conference like Southeast Digital Picnic to the region to celebrate such a thriving county and show what it has to offer. With IE Domain Registry (IEDR) recently announcing Gorey as ‘Digital Town 2018’, a social and digital conference such as Southeast Digital Picnic brings a day of inspiration, exciting opportunities and actionable insights to the community. A TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY, THE 'TOP 10 MUST DOS' WHILE IN THE BIG APPLE

IN NYC, THERE ARE FUN THINGS TO DO AROUND EVERY CORNER—FROM THE MUST-SEE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS TO THE OFFTHE-BEATEN-PATH LOCAL GEMS.

1.

Times Square is the most frenetic part of New York City, millions of flashing lights and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, If you like sensory overload, the mix of huge billboards and flashing digital displays, on-location television broadcasts, naked cowboys, and Elmo clones time square will definitely give you your fix.

NYC is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, hotels, museums, boutiques, and bars. Constantly evolving, New York is a different city every time you visit. Yesterday’s hot spot is today’s eye roll, so everyone who wants to know where to go and what to see needs an expert guide, my list of the best things to do will have you falling in love with New York.

2. 3.

The best shows in NYC are mostly located in the area surrounding Times Square, more than three dozen Broadway theaters host some of the greatest spectacles in town. From big-budget musicals to high-minded plays to stage debuts featuring Holly wood stars, there’s likely to be something for everyone playing on the boards. You should buy tickets in advance for popular shows, but if you’re willing to see anything and looking to save some money as well, stop by the TKTS booth in Times Square, which sells same-day tickets at a discount. Take your time to apreciate some of the world’s most incredible modern art. MoMA MoMA is home to some of the world’s most recognisable modern masterpieces from artists like Warhol, Calder, Picasso, and Van Gogh. Dedicated to art, sculpture, and photography, the museum is a must-visit. In Queens, MoMA PS1 showcases avant-garde contemporary art in a converted schoolhouse. It’s a love it or hate it kind of place, where art is provocative, confusing, shocking, and everything else art should be.

4. 5. 6. 7.

The incredible Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is the prettiest bridge in New York and one of the city’s most iconic structures. Walking across the East River, the wooden-planked structure takes about 40 minutes and delivers some of the best views of Lower Manhattan. If the bridge is too crowded for you or if it’s in an inconvenient part of town, take a walk across the Williamsburg Bridge instead. Connecting two of New York’s hippest neighbourhoods (the Lower East Side and Williamsburg), this bridge isn’t as iconic as the Brooklyn Bridge, but it’s less crowded, with great views of the skyline. Go for a walk in the Central Park. Central Park is an urbanised Eden that gives residents and visitors a bit of green heaven. The busy southern section of Central Park, from 59th to 72nd Street, is where most visitors get their first impression. But no matter how many people congregate around there, you can always find a spot to picnic, ponder, or just take in the greenery, especially on a sunny day. Stuff Your Face With Pizza at Di Fara and Totonno's and Joe pizza. Pizza is New York’s most beloved and iconic food. You can find a pretty good slice in most neighborhoods, but deservedly legendary institutions include Di Fara Pizza, Totonno’s, Joe and Lombardi’s Pizza. Also worth a try are Roberta’s, Paulie Gee’s, Motorino, all equally amazing. Eat Food From the Far Corners of the World. Every time I am in NYC, I sample something truly authentic from this city of immigrants, venture off the beaten path, You can try food from all over the world in New York City, especially if you’re willing to travel to the outer boroughs. Feast on vegan Ethiopian food at Bushwick’s Bunna Café, sample Yemeni cuisine at Yemen Café in Brooklyn Heights, or try hot pot at Mister HotPot in Sunset Park. If you don’t have time to make it to Brooklyn or Queens, you can still try Szechuan cuisine at Hot Kitchen, Afghan cuisine at Khyber Pass, and Georgian food at Old Tblisi Garden—all located in Manhattan. And even If you’re not an adventurous eater, have no fear: there’s world-class French, Italian, and Japanese in every neighbourhood.

9.

Take a Boat. There are a couple of easy ways to get out on a boat on a sunny day, ranging from low-key and free to glamorous and expensive. The East River Ferry costs the same as a subway swipe ($2.75) and connects Lower Manhattan with hip Brooklyn neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Greenpoint (and you get to cruise under the Brooklyn Bridge, which is very cool). If you want a little more adventure than a standard commute, take the ferry to Governor’s Island where there’s an organic farm, art studios, and festivals throughout the summer—the Jazz Age Lawn Party is one of the best-dressed events in New York City. To celebrate a special occasion or just the fact that you have oodles of money, charter a private sailboat for a tour around Manhattan. You can also book a wine and cheese sailing, which is only slightly more expensive than a touristy Circle Line Cruise, but there are wine and cheese involved.

10.

8.

You must Sip Fancy Cocktails at a Speakeasy Bar. From barber shops to hot dog huts to unassuming Korean restaurants and pawn shops, half the fun of visiting these places is the thrill of finding it and getting a table. While some, like Bathtub Gin and The Back Room (enter through a grimy Lower East Side basement) hold fast to the speakeasy theme with costumes and decor, others are here just to serve good cocktails. Please Don’t Tell is perhaps the most famous speakeasy of all, accessed through the phone booth of a next door hot dog hut but good luck getting a reservation, even now that the secret’s out. Also while you are in NYC be prepared to tip, every where you go the tip is expected.

Experience Bushwick’s Experimental Performing Arts Scene. Bushwick’s legendary nightlife scene is the kind of thing you’ll be telling your grandkids about when you’re old. With an emphasis on creativity, a night out in Bushwick can start with a movement showcase at Otion Front, followed by an experimental music performance at a DIY venue like Secret Project Robot, followed by a drag show or burlesque performance at House of Yes. It’s weird, it’s wild, it’s wacky, it’s wonderful, and you’ll go home at the end of the night (or more likely, the next morning) with a great story to tell. Dress to impress —costumes encouraged.

On a wet and thundery morning, we drove out and away from Johannesburg’s grey skies and headed for the sunny Pilanesberg. The Pilanesburg is home to the big five and covers an area of 550km²! We stayed in the Bakubung bush lodge. Here, wellness, relaxed living and bush life rules the day, and this is how we spent our few days. Surrounded on all sides by the awe-inspiring Pilanesberg national park and nestled behind kilometres of game fences, Bakubung is a genuine escape from the hustle and bustle of modern living and all the stress that takes its toll on our health that goes along with it! My first stop was going to be the Bakubung Spa, nestled in the middle of the bush, the experience begins on the walk up, there is something so

peaceful and relaxing about the African bush, I was welcomed with a soft breeze, the spa is very much open so you can enjoy the surrounds in all its glory. I spotted a magnificent Elephant on the walk up, what other spa offers that experience! I first enjoyed a pedicure which was both efficient and very relaxing she used OPI products and I brought along my own Fedua polish. I also enjoyed a facial and a back massage, my facial was really great she used Babor products and my neglected skin felt amazing afterwards. I was surprised at the level of post treatment consultation and product recommendations, while so many therapists feel guilt with ‘’the hard sale’’ and this is often breezed over I feel this is an essential part of any treatment, my therapist gave me a great post treatment plan and product prescription and I left feeling I had been given a thorough treatment in every sense.

The treatment rooms also open out onto the bush so you really experience that rare feeling of escapism and wilderness. My back massage was one of the best I have ever had, within 5 minutes my therapist had pin pointed all my areas of tension and was busy ironing them out. I dozed off wondering how I could get this lady into my case and take her back to Ireland with me!! This spa was the perfect escape, the lodge also provides beautiful game drives, game walks and we were also treated to a delicious ‘boma braai’ South African for ‘dinner in the bush’ during our stay! Back to Johannesburg then to the incredible Residence boutique hotel for the city spa experience. Johannesburg is a city with a population of over 6 million, compare that to Irelands population of 4.6 million and you get an idea for how busy this city is! Residence is one of my favourite places in the world, I have been spoiled here for a few years now and it is always an essential stopover when visiting Johannesburg. The signature spa on the top floor looks out over the busy city skyline, a far cry from the bush but an equally beautiful setting in a different sense of the word. Set amidst an abundance of bougainvillea blossoms in the historical suburb of Houghton, the suburb is also home to former president of South Africa; Nelson Mandela. Residence is seductive and sophisticated, the dramatic velvet drapes Persian rugs and spacious balcony’s open up on to the lush gardens and inviting swimming pools, outdoor showers, Jacuzzis and baths lend an extra element of indulgence. I scheduled a foot massage and a facial treatment, My therapist sensed I was pushed for time and suggested two therapists perform the treatments in unison, a nice idea. Back in Johannesburg the weather was a little colder so my treatment room was cosier, the treatment began with a foot ritual beside a warm open fire in a dimly lit and relaxing treatment room, my two therapists went to work and indulged me in pure relaxation. What I really love about Residence is how they so clearly define the spa experience and absolute indulgence in the modern definition of wellness without all the usual bells and whistles so many spas have come to believe are a necessity. This is a small property with perhaps around five treatment rooms but it’s up there with the very best. They achieve this with fabulous attention to detail, beautiful therapists, spectacular signature style and a setting that indulges all the senses. EMPLOYMENT LAW: KEY DIFFERENCES FOR CROSS BORDER BUSINESSES A full insight into the key differences between employment law in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

SICK PAY Sick pay is another area of note. Republic of Ireland employers are under no obligation to pay sick pay but is open to them to provide a sick pay scheme on a contractual basis. In Northern Ireland employers can choose to provide a sick pay scheme on a contractual basis and if no contractual sick pay scheme exists, employers will be obliged to pay Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to all employees. PUBLIC HOLIDAYS Public holidays also differ on either side of the border with employees in the Republic of Ireland enjoying nine public holidays as opposed to their Northern counterparts who benefit from ten bank and public holidays, with the days differing in some instances. NOTICE OBLIGATIONS There are also differences in the employers’ notice obligations, rising from 1 week to 8 weeks’ after 15 years’ service in the Republic of Ireland; whereas in Northern Ireland employer’s notice is between 1 week and 12 weeks’ after 12 years’ service. REDUNDANCY Redundancy packages in the Republic of Ireland, which are based on length of service and salary, are substantially more lucrative than in the Northern Ireland, where length of service, salary and age are taken into account. Statutory redundancy payments in the Republic of Ireland are based on two weeks per year of service plus a bonus week’s pay. The weekly wage is capped to €600. Most importantly and unlike in Northern Ireland, the total redundancy payment is not capped. Ex-gratia payments are also common in the Republic of Ireland.

At Luke Curran & Co. Solicitors Newry, we regularly advise NI based employers on their operations in the Republic of Ireland. As the UK approaches its departure from the European Union, we anticipate demand for specialist advice from local businesses to increase, with many NI-based companies having already taken the decision to establish or expand their footprint in the Republic of Ireland postBrexit. In general terms NI and Irish employment laws have primarily emanated from EU Directives. Whilst there are similarities between both jurisdictions, to the surprise of many Northern Irish employers, there are in fact, substantial differences which can have a significant impact on their business models.

MINIMUM WAGE The minimum wage is an obvious place to start. Since 1 January 2018, the rate in the Republic of Ireland is €9.55 per hour. This contrasts with Northern Ireland where, from 1 April 2019, the rate is set at £8.21 per hour (for over 25s) – still a difference, even taking currency fluctuations into consideration. In addition, Republic of Ireland employers have no obligation to contribute to an employee’s pension, just to allow access to a pension scheme. This is in direct contrast to the automatic enrolment obligations of employers in Northern Ireland.

UNFAIR DISMISSAL The law also differs when it comes to cases of unfair dismissal. Whilst employees in both jurisdictions require 12 months’ service to bring an unfair dismissal claim, awards, which can be up to a maximum of 2 years’ net remuneration in the Republic of Ireland can be applied, unlike in Northern Ireland where awards are capped. Claims must generally be presented or brought within six months in the Republic of Ireland as opposed to a stricter three-month time limit in Northern Ireland. WORK PLACE RELATIONS COMMISSION / INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNAL SYSTEM The Republic of Ireland’s Workplace Relations Commission (“WRC”) operates as the Court of First Instance with appeals going to the Labour Court. The WRC is typically less procedural than the Industrial Tribunal system in Northern Ireland, with very little pressure on Claimants to set out their case in detail prior to the hearing date. TUPE TUPE is another area of distinction. In Northern Ireland TUPE will almost inevitably apply to service provision changes i.e. where there is a change of contractor or an outsourcing or insourcing of work. However, this is not the case in the Republic of Ireland, where the application of TUPE is much more fact sensitive and dependent upon the circumstances of any change. WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN MORE? These points offer an insight into the main employment areas which require consideration when operating a business on either side of the Irish border. But we would always recommend employers take local, bespoke advice relating and tailored to the needs and requirements of their business when expanding into a new territory, harmonising terms or dealing with a dispute in a new jurisdiction.
