#3( )JTUPSZ The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

#3( (PBMT Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. #3( "EWFSUJTJOH With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

“ya see doc, I can’t remember... ‘feed a cold, starve a fever’... or ‘feed a fever, starve a cold? So I feed everything... even a pimple!

5 Super-Simple Savers to Try Now Resolve to keep more money in your pocket in 2018 By PGE Staff

These cold, dark winter months can drive up your electricity use. But we have plenty of energy-saving ideas to help power your day affordably. Here are ďŹ ve of our top ways to save this season: Turn down the thermostat — each degree you lower it saves about 2 percent on heating costs. Try 68 degrees as your standard setting, 60 when sleeping or gone.*

Cover foundation vents to keep cold air out (remove covers in spring).

Seal air leaks with caulk, expanding spray foam and weather stripping. It only takes one afternoon and you’re done!

Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees.

Switch to super-saving LED light bulbs.

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District: Connecting People, Parks and Nature

District debuts array of outdoor ďŹ tness stations at Vista Brook Park by Bill Evans

orking in the Âżeld for THPRD Park Maintenance, Mike Cero often notices park visitors using any apparatus they can Âżnd – soccer goals, park benches, play equipment and more – to assist their individual workout regimen. “Push-ups, pull-ups, box jumps,â€? he said, listing just a few of the exercises he sees people doing. He recognized a need for outdoor Âżtness facilities that would aid park visitors without taking a toll on THPRD equipment designed for other purposes. He followed through on it, and as a result, seven Âżtness stations were installed in recent months around Vista Brook Park’s open lawn: a row machine, squat press, pull-up/dip bar, leg press, chest

press/pull, sit up board and back extension. An eighth piece will offer speciÂżc exercises for people in wheelchairs. Vista Brook Park is located at 6697 SW 88th Avenue in the Garden Home area, conveniently adjacent to the Fanno Creek Trail. Recalling how the process began, Cero said, “I asked Jon Campbell (Maintenance superintendent) about the likelihood of installing some outdoor Âżtness equipment. He liked the idea and thought it would make a good business plan.â€? He used data from the district’s 2013 Comprehensive Plan to identify sites where there might be a need for new recreational assets. “Vista Brook Park scored out just perfectly, right in the sweet spot,â€? Cero said. THPRD program staff helped research equipment, which was purchased from Triactive America

Ideally, Cero said, this could be the Âżrst of many outdoor Âżtness stations at THPRD parks. “It’s a pilot program, and I hope it plays out as well as we have hoped,â€? he said. “The feedback we’ve gotten has been positive, people are excited. Now, we’ll track usage, gather feedback and hopefully bring more opportunities like this to the district.â€? /KMG %GTQ 6*24&Ĺ?U 2CTM /CKPVGPCPEG UWRGTXKUQTĹŒ0QTVJ FKURNC[U QPG QH UGXGP PGY QWVFQQT Ĺż VPGUU UVCVKQPU CV 8KUVC $TQQM 2CTM CPQVJGT KU KP VJG DCEMITQWPF %GTQ URGCTJGCFGF VJG FKUVTKEV GHHQTV VQ OCMG VJGO CXCKNCDNG HQT RCVTQPU

Traffic Q&A:

With the Beaverton Police Department

Q:

What is the correct way to drive when it’s snowy or icy outside?

A: Drive at slower speeds on snow ow and ice. Be defensive. Leave more room between your vehicle and the one ahead. Keep windows clear of snow, ow, ice, or fog. Here are a few other ideas to help you drive safely on snow and ice: t

Keep a light, steady foot on the gas pedal. When your vehicle begins to move, too much power may cause the vehicle to not move at all or to start forward with it’s rear-end skidding to the right or left.

t

Make turns at a reduced, steady speed to avoid a skid.

t

Get the “feelâ€? of the road away from trafďŹ c when you start driving. Try your brakes lightly so you will know what to expect.

t

Do not slam on your brakes to stop on snow or ice. If you slam on the brakes, your vehicle will almost always skid. Instead, gently press the brakes and then release them.

t

Watch for danger spots ahead. A bridge or shaded area freezes ďŹ rst and still may be icy after the rest of the road is free of ice.

t

Remember that temperature plays a part in stopping ability. The road is likely to be the most slippery when ice is near the freezing point rather than at lower temperatures.

t

When you go uphill on an ice-covered or snowy road, apply just enough power to maintain motion, without causing the wheels to spin.

t

Pay attention to weather forecasts and police warnings. When police or highway ofďŹ cials say driving is very hazardous, stay off the road except for essential travel.

t

Do not use cruise control.

Q:

What is the difference between using chains or traction tires during snowy conditions?

A: When you drive along a highway in winter conditions, you may see signs telling you which vehicles should chainup, and when traction tires are allowed or required. In some areas of the state, lighted message signs may also advise you about chaining up. Under some conditions, traction tires may be used in place of chains on vehicles rated at 10,000 pounds or less and that are not towing or being towed. t

“Chainsâ€? are link or cable chains, or any other device that attaches to the wheel, vehicle, or outside of the tire, which is speciďŹ cally designed to increase traction on ice and snow conditions.

t

“Traction tiresâ€? are studded tires or tires that meet the tire industry deďŹ nition as suitable for use in severe snow conditions. Tires designated by the tire industry display an icon of a three-peaked mountain and snowake.

Because of the damage studded tires cause to roads, they are generally allowed only from November 1 to April 1. Drivers should be aware that some states ban the use of studded tires.

Bert, is a 6 year old male B & W Tuxedo Maine Coon mix. He will greet you at the door, follow you around the house and sleep by your feet. He is curious and loves to play. Bert likes watching TV on your lap, his favorite channel is Animal Planet. Do you like to exercise? Pull out your Yoga mat and he will be there with you doing poses or stretching. Bert needs to be your one-and-only cat but is great with dogs. Bert has never had health issues, is neutered and current with vaccinations. His fur is super soft and likes to be brushed. He is a wonderful cat and would make someone a great companion, and holy catnip, he can be in your home to start 2018.

This wonderful kitty will brighten up the new year of any single or couple.

He is very friendly, loves to head butt and roll on the oor to get your attention. He is doing ďŹ ne in a foster home with another cat, we think if your dog is cat friendly he will be just ďŹ ne. Errol & Roslin So what’s our story you might ask‌ Well, we are a puggle sibling pair (turning 7 soon) and can certainly entertain ourselves if we must, but prefer to have our humans around to share in our abundant joy. You might be surprised we came from the same litter with Roslin being so much bigger than me – I sometimes refer to her as the Gentle Giant. Roslin is really the queen bee and Errol (me) is a high energy prince of dogs. Let me explain – Roslin will happily sit at the back sliding glass door and bark at a passing bluebird or squirrel while I would much rather chase them down. Roslin loves her tennis ball and will even fetch for a short bit but I am not so interested in chasing a ball although I will chase Roslin. We love to go for walks but that Roslin could use some leash manners. We get along great with our foster siblings and the

foster parents’ granddaughter – as she just can’t get enough of my precious kisses. We, however, do not like cats in our space and will terrorize them if given half a chance. We sleep together in our kennel and love to snuggle with each other. We like being with our humans and can easily be converted to unabashed couch Puggles (some folks would say couch potatoes). It is actually one of our favorite past times! Well, that’s our short story and if we have sparked an interest we would love to meet you. We are truly a Dynamic Duo waiting to bring your grateful hearts abundant smiles!

Adoption Donation: $200 for the pair.

About Us We are a patriotic community service organization with membership based on our common lineage from those who fought for, or directly supported, the cause of the American Revolution. We share a common background, that of our Patriot Ancestors who fought or helped in many ways to form our country, the United States of America. In doing so, they stood up to the tyrants of the day, and formed a more perfect union. We, in our humble way, honor their memo-

Out & About | What’s Happeni ng Around B eaverton This Month? Travell B T Beaverton & Beyond

What’s New on Maui? Ocean Center, your first stop is the historic whaling town of Lahaina. Rustic buildings recall its days as Hawaii’s busiest port, while bustling shops on Front Street and winter whale watching make it a favorite port of call for cruise ship passengers.

TRAVEL The Island of Maui, also known as “The Valley Isle,” is the second largest Hawaiian island. The island beloved for its worldfamous beaches, the sacred Iao Valley, views of migrating humpback whales (during winter months), farm-to-table cuisine and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakala. It’s not surprising Maui has been voted “Best Island in the U.S.” by Condé Nast Traveler readers for more than 20 years.

Beaches of Maui Discover Maui’s world-famous beaches. With 120 miles of coastline, Maui boasts over 30 miles of beautiful beaches. On these world famous shores you’ll find white, black and red sand beaches, popular surfing and windsurfing spots as well as some of the best beaches in the world to simply swim, snorkel and sunbathe. Many are easily accessible beach parks with lifeguards, picnic facilities and restrooms. Others are undeveloped, “secret spots” found off the beaten path.

Central Maui Kahului is home to the island’s main airport and interesting attractions. Head to Wailuku for

mom-and-pop shops and eateries along the way to the Iao Valley State Park. Most visitors to the island will begin their vacations in Central Maui, arriving at Kahului Airport (OGG). Home to much of the island’s population, this area offers plenty of interesting attractions and off-the-beaten-path treasures to uncover. The neighboring town of Kahului is a bustling shopping district with Maui’s largest mall, and if you want to stock up for an epic trip, everything you need can be found here. The Hana Highway leads past town — follow it toward Paia Town where the legendary Road to Hana begins.

East Maui Visitors who brave the Hana Highway’s signature hairpin turns and narrow bridges are rewarded with out-of-this-world views of lush rainforests, gorgeous waterfalls and exotic

beaches. There’s even a bamboo forest. When your mind imagines Maui, it probably looks a lot like the island’s epic east side: cascading waterfall pools hidden in lush rainforests, roadside pineapple stands, hairpin turns around plunging sea cliffs. It’s all here, along the legendary Road to Hana—one big reason why East Maui is a must-see on any traveler’s list

South Maui Escape to the tropical beaches of Kihei, Makena and Wailea; relax and unwind at a world-class resort or tee off at one of the 13 world-renowned golf courses. You’ll find the sunniest, driest area of Maui on the peaceful southwestern coast. Blessed with miles of sandy beaches and clear views of the islands of Lanai, Molokini and Kahoolawe, South Maui is a place for lazy days and romantic nights. Explore the immersive underwater aquarium

at the Maui Ocean Center in the whale-friendly Maalaea Bay. Golf at world-class courses in Wailea. Shop and dine in some of Maui’s finest restaurants and resorts. Discover Maui’s warm hospitality on its spectacular southern coast.

A few minutes more on the Highway and you’ll find yourself drawn into the vibrant Kaanapali Resort. Whether you’re staying in the area or just passing through, a stroll on the Kaanapali Beachwalk is always in order. Families play on the beach, shoppers buzz in and out, and diners sit back and simply soak in the view.

West Maui One of Maui’s most famous stretches of coastline, Kaanapali Beach offers three miles of paradise where ocean adventures and total relaxation await.. The sunny northwest coast of Maui was once a retreat for Hawaiian royalty and the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Today, West Maui is home to spectacular resorts, shopping, restaurants, a wealth of activities and some of the most amazing sunsets in the world. The Honoapiilani Highway takes you from one sun-kissed resort to the next, each with its own personality. Traveling north from Maalaea and the Maui

keys. He’d been working at that specific song for what’d felt like ages – trying to make every note as perfect as possible. He felt his lips curl into a tired smile. Not only had he finally finished his song, he was actually proud of his work. The sound of applause began to fill the apartment, and his smile froze on his face. Ice cold fear filled him, like he’d been doused in cold water. The clapping didn’t cease. James lived alone

Hunger by Ronnie Irby, Grade 7 There is silence, only my feet touching the hard dirt. Nothing in the air, nothing prowling in the woods. What should be serene feels off somehow. The sky is gray, sad, motionless. I feel bleak and sucked of energy: I need

rest. So I place myself onto a log. I am still, I cannot feel time pass. I cannot move or breathe. I can feel something behind me. It touches my back with something sharp, slicing the skin immediately. It burns like a thousand tiny fires, yet I cannot scream. I am alone, no one for miles. I can feel something long, warm and wet wrap around my neck. As I choke my vision is covered by something large and I am quickly devoured. My body is gone, but my drawstring backpack stands against the log, unmoved by time.

Triskaidekaphobia by Jason Keck, Grade 7 I’ve always been afraid of the number 13. When I was younger, I went out Trick-OrTreating on Halloween to 13 houses before getting sick. Later, when I got home, I realized that someone had stolen 13 of my favorite sour candies. A few years after that I saw a ladybug with 13 spots and that same day my mom got in a car accident. She had to make 13 payments for 13 months to pay for the damage. This year is going to be

my 13th birthday on October 13. My friends try to convince me not to be afraid of the number 13; they say nothing is wrong and that I’m just being silly. I’m still dreading tomorrow because it will be 13 days away from my birthday. I decide to get some sleep, but the number 13 clogs my head. I wake up to a loud smash and the tinkle of shattered glass hitting the floor. It sounded like it was from the living room. I decide to hide in the warmth of my bed, but then I hear something coming up the 13 stairs that I always trip on. I wait breathlessly for what seems like forever, then something slowly knocked on my door 13 times…

The Fangs

by Hayley Smith, Grade 10 I didn’t see the fangs. How could I have seen them, considering there was a pretty girl standing right in front of me? Besides, no one ever looks at teeth, they always notice the eyes. What a pair of dazzling amber eyes! All I know was that a pretty girl had thought I looked lonely sitting in the back of the lo-

cal café and decided to keep me company. I suppose I shouldn’t have followed her into that dark, deserted alley, but she told me it was a shortcut to her house downtown. I didn’t know any better, since I’ve only been in this city for a month. I had no reason to think it wasn’t a shortcut, that it was actually a dead end. I had no reason to think that cute girl would grab me by the throat and sink her fangs deep into my neck. I had no reason to think I would black out and wake up with blood crusted wounds. I just figured I was lucky to be alive. Sure, I felt a little different, like something wasn’t right. As I walked back to the café where I had met that lovely girl, I vowed never to be ensnared again by a pair of eyes. You should always look at the teeth. I stepped inside the café, and in the back of the place, I saw a girl around my age sitting at the exact table I had been earlier. If I was being honest, she reminded me of the way I looked before. Before all this happened anyway. I Continued on Page 29-->

Oregon Conversation Project: Wednesday, January 17, 6 pm. “A Place to Call Home: Exploring Housing in Oregon”. Location: GHCL Annex – 7306 SW Oleson Rd (in the Lamb’s Garden Home Marketplace). Join us for a free discussion about affordable housing. At the most basic level, a home is a place that gives you shelter, protecting you from the weather and unsafe situations. It’s also where you live your life, eat your meals, raise your family. If housing is a basic human right, why do so many people struggle to find or keep housing? How do we as individuals and as a society make decisions that undermine the idea that we all have a right to home? This is the focus of “A Place to Call Home: Exploring Housing in Oregon”, a free conversation with Cristina Palacios. This program is hosted by Garden Home Community Library and sponsored by Oregon Humanities.

Film Night: Marshall Friday, January 19, 7 pm. Location: GHCL Annex – 7306 SW Oleson Rd (in the Lamb’s Garden Home Marketplace). Join us for our monthly (or more) free film night! This evening, we are screening Marshall (2017): about a young Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases.

Trick or Tweets Contest Winners (Continuted from page 26) decided that this girl looked lonely and that she needed some company. When I managed to catch her eye, I smiled boldly. She smiled back, a little shyly. I guess she didn’t pay attention to my fangs.

Face to Face

by Helena Khoury, Grade 10 The club music is blaring in the background and a young girl no older than twentythree stumbles into the bathroom. Clutching the door frame, her heavy breathing and panting can be heard. Mascara tears slice through her cheeks, cracking into her. Her words cannot be heard as she looks over her shoulder and back up at me. Caked under her nails was more than just the dirt from yesterday. Her blue bodycon dress slipping off her shoulder, its bright color muted by unknown stains. She drags her feet across the floor and her disheveled appearance became more spent to me. Her movements were slow and somber, as if she was confused and sad. She reaches the sink and twists the knobs right in front of me. Hot water blasts out, water too hot to touch, yet she holds her hand under the boiling water all the same. She scrubs her skin as if there were unfamiliar scales sprouting from her arms. I try to call out to her to stop, but like always, I can’t be heard. Her cries as her arms are scorched can be heard bursting through the thumping sounds of the club. As she scrubs under the scorching water, she tries to peel the invisible scales away from her skin. She digs her nails into nothing as she cries. The basin fills with red and chipped nail polish. A pretty girl no older than twenty-three looks up into me, but all she sees is a beast.

The Shadow

by Madeleine Herbst, Grade 10 “Sleep well.” Hopeless words, she thought; she knew well the night would be sleepless, like the last night, and years of nights before. Her guardian was out of sight, and she could do nothing to bring them back – the looming, inky darkness had already swallowed the door, and was creeping towards the side of her bed. She had endured years of the suffocating treatment, and yet she was still terrified every night. She hugged her knees to her chest as shadows pooled at the sides of her bed, creeping like ivy tendrils up her threadbare mattress. As one latched onto her, ripping again and again at the familiar scar wrapped around her ankle, she tried, as always, to scream: nothing came out. She choked as she tried to breathe, tears dripping slowly down her face. She tugged desperately at the pitch coil on her with no success as it dragged her to the floor. The sludge crawled up her limbs, and she sputtered and coughed as it got in her mouth. As she struggled, she saw the tall figure appear in the corner of the room. It always appeared at this time, and she flinched instinctively as it came towards her. It reached for her side, carving with a bony finger a piece of her flesh. Tears came as the wound began to bleed. As the figure and darkness faded, she sat, wondering if, and hoping that, this night would be her last. Slowly, she cried as she slipped into unconsciousness.

He’d believed it when he’d exchanged clever email banter for over a month with the poster. He’d trusted it when he’d Google-stalked the girl and found threads of her existence everywhere, even dating back to an embarrassing YouTube channel she’d started in 2011. He’d even been fool enough to agree to meet her in her remote little town deep in the swamps of Louisiana. And now look at him, dangling upside down by his feet from a fraying rope over a lagoon full of alligators. She’d said, when he came to, that it wasn’t personal. Just a human sacrifice to appease the family demons. Of course, she hadn’t looked anything like her online picture, so she was obviously comfortable with bending the truth. Honestly, he’d be more scared, except he felt like such an idiot

for succumbing to the oldest trick on the Internet that there was little room left for fear. At least he wouldn’t have to pay the stupid app subscription fee anymore. Take that, you piece-of-crap app developers, he thought, as the rope slowly lowered him to the roiling water below.
