2 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 10 - Issue 11 (November 2020)
t’s very easy to be critical and cynical these days. I like to think that I have developed the art of being critical to new levels; my wife may begrudgingly attest to this talent. I used to think it was an important skill to have an eye for critique; after all, it is important not to be taken advantage of by others, to hold people accountable to their actions, and to strive for greatness in our daily living. But here’s the thing I’ve also UHDOL]HG WKH EHQH¿W GRHV QRW normally outweigh the cost. Sure, perhaps you were able to get that discount offered by the restaurant for an unsatisfactory meal, but is it really worth living with such an attitude throughout the rest of one’s life? How can one really enjoy something if we are constantly looking for ways to criticize? Juxtapose this attitude of criticism with that of being thankful. I was once asked to record in a MRXUQDO ¿YH WKLQJV , ZDV WKDQNIXO for in the day; it felt unnatural and hard to come by on that ¿UVW GD\ +RZHYHU ZKDW , FDPH to realize was that I was going through pretty much the same daily reality as I was before; now I was just focusing on the positives rather than the negatives. In short, my attitude and perspective was slowly changing. And this got me thinking
about all those people who seemed happier than I was. The reality was that they were experiencing all of the same stuff I was. They could just have easily complained about things; however, they just tended to focus on being appreciative for the positive things in the world, instead of focusing on the negative. I still wrestle with critical thinking; it’s hard to shake at times. But I also recognize that being thankful for what life presents is also a contagious attitude. Sometimes it’s merely a matter of perspective and our decision on what to focus on. So how about we try focusing on thankfulness this month? What new possibilities might present themselves with our new mindset? What simple things in life can bring about true thanksgiving? How can thankfulness heal and restore relationships in our lives today? The world can do with a little thankfulness these days, and this is one contagious thing I’m willing to spread happily!

Finding Employment During a Pandemic Holly found what type of job she felt she had the skills and abilities to do. After a few months and a handful of jobs applied for, DCC Job Developer Tara reached out to speak with local supermarket manager Justin M. to inquire about potential employment opportunities and arranged an interview. Justin connected with Holly, learning about other talents hobbies she could bring to the team at this business. When Holly attended BCTP, she designed signs for the school. Justin was delighted to learn about this skill and plans to use her talents. Holly was offered and started in a Courtesy Clerk position and has not looked back. +ROO\ UHSRUWV ³:KHQ , ¿UVW started working here... I was

really nervous- so nervous that I couldn’t even think or speak. But the other employees were nice to me and they paired me with a trainer who showed me my work routine and tasks. Some of the tasks like pulling carts and sanitizing them is not hard to do, when the weather is sunny, I enjoy getting some fresh air.” Way to go Holly, we are excited to see some of your art on display!

CATALYST BUSINESS NEWSLETTER
Will your business succeed during these difficult times? It’s the little things you choose BUSINESS ADVICE
T
here are 2 businesses where my family grabs a bite to eat quite regularly in the Beaverton Community. They both have delights we enjoy, but they could not be more different in how they approach customer engagement. Papa Murphy’s Pizza at Murray Road and Allen Boulevard’s employees answer the phone in a positive way, they look you in the eye, they give you info when you call your order in (like your balance), they tell you to have a great day, they say Thank You!!It shows that they want your business, and that they appreciate their customers gifting them their patronage and hard-earned money! IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS! The other location will go nameless. They are a locally owned eatery, we enjoy their food, and we don’t want to negatively impact their business by listing their name. However, when you call an order in, their young employees mumble the company
www.BeavertonResourceGuide.com
name as they answer the phone. They just gurgle out the company name, without a: “Thank you for calling” or “How may I help you. “In fact, I think the teacher from the Peanuts cartoons speaks more clearly! After you order what you want, what you regularly get is silence, or a clipped: “Your order will be ready in 10 minutes.” Then click. ME: “Hello, are you still there? Hello?” Nope, they hung up. No thank you, no total, no cheery: “See you in a few! “When I walk out the door with my food, it has been handed to me, by an employee who quickly turns away to their next task, without a goodbye, thank you,
have a great day or see you next time. IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS...OR LACK THEREOF! Now, I want to be clear, I know both owners. They know me. They know I have been in the sales/marketing/ customer service industry for decades. My Papa Murphy’s pal calls me regularly and asks me how my experience has been lately. He wants to know. He is on it. He trains regularly. He reminds his staff of the little things often. Are they perfect? No, but they are good, pleasant, and I feel good calling and walking out the door with my pizza. As for the owner of the service challenged business, I
have called and emailed him with lightly toned, positive worded messages about the interpersonal communication issues his staff is exhibiting. He has been receptive, but nothing has changed. That’s ok, we’re not criticizing him here. Just comparing how one owner might be “on it” while the other is not “jumping on it”. We love their food, but:(A) I shake my head walking out the door, feeling a tad under appreciated.(B )We still order there as we love their food, but we also see our visits declining compared to the past. Note, I don’t need to be coddled or over engaged. Not in the least. BUT, business owners and managers...keep in mind: We are living in a time ZKHQ SHRSOH DUH SLQFKHG ¿nancially and stressed out. Job restrictions, layoffs, Covid, Social Unrest, A Contentious Presidential Election, etc...all have people on edge, worried, anxious and more. People are careful where they spend their money, and more than ever, they want to feel good, feel appreciated, and walk out the door thinking their time and money was well spent. Simple stuff here. It’s the little things. Eye contact. Information Provided. Positive
Tones. Appreciation. Thank Yous. You get to choose. Will your people be good or great at it? Or, will they just appear unengaged, going through the motions, or even uncaring. Winning or losing. Succeeding or failing. It’s all based on: THE LITTLE THINGS! • Make it easy for people to do (and keep doing) business with you! • Look up… and surprise someone!

ave you been to any of the great outdoor seating areas yet? The City of Beaverton recently approved outdoor dining to continue until further notice. Good news! I highly recommend the 1st Street Dining Commons. Open to the public, you can bring food from home or order from a local restaurant to eat on the street. Heaters and lights will be added to many of these outdoor business spaces as we enter the coder and darker winter months. The BDA recently received grant funding to add planters, public art, and cultural programming to that space. By the end of November, we could have two new murals, 14 new planters, and a Five Oaks Museum exhibit about the Kalapuyan indigenous people.
Come see it! We have been fortunate to not lose any storefront businesses over the last month during the pandemic. However, this winter poses a lot of uncertainty for businesses. Sleep better every night With these 5 sureďŹ re tips HEALTH
O
ur ability to sleep is contingent on practicing good habits. Consider the following measures to help you catch your eight hours’ worth of slumber each night. Manage your sleep environment.
You’ll want to create a relaxing ambiance and do away with all potential sources of distraction: electronics, work-related stuff, or anything that doesn’t belong to your bedroom. Also, consider investing in the right mattress. Do your best to eliminate noise and light. All these add up and can greatly affect the quality of your sleep. Get some sunlight.
Sunlight keeps your circadian clock working normally. This is an internal timekeeping mechanism that regulates bodily processes, telling the body to ramp up or wind down when it’s time to wake and sleep. Try to get at least 2 hours of sunlight each day, starting off as close to the time you wake up as possible. Reduce artiďŹ cial light.
Blue light -- the kind that emanates from electronic screens -- can throw your circadian clock off balance
when exposed to at night. To minimize this, steer clear of electronic screens 2-3 hours before you go to bed and dim the lights in your home. Wind down before bed.
There’re various relaxation techniques you could include in your routine: quiet reading, meditation, breathing exercises, a warm bath, listening to soft music, and so on. Try to avoid things that may put your mind back into “work mode, such as sending or reading emails. Stay away from liquor.
Alcohol inhibits the production of melatonin, our body’s sleep-inducing hormone. It can even interfere with your breathing patterns during the night. Steer clear of alcohol in the lead-up to your bedtime. Poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy habits during the day can greatly hamper your ability to get enough quality sleep. Start making the right changes towards healthier habits, and your situation will improve sooner than you imagine.

went to the optometrist today. Happy to report nothing too dramatic is going on, other than the need for bifocals. When we are young, for most of us, the lenses of our eyes bend. This allows light to focus onto the retina so that we can see objects both near and far. As we age, this capacity decreases. Typically, we need to hold things farther away to focus. The muscles that control our pupils, which widen and constrict to allow light in, weaken so we often require more light to see clearly. If our lenses become cloudy, we have cataracts. 50% of people over 75 years old get cataracts. Many serious issues affect the aging eye—detached retina, glaucoma, macular degeneration—and many chronic health issues will affect vision.
LOCAL ADVICE
ON
Just like the rest of our bodies, there are ways we can slow down the aging process of our eyes. If you are on the computer or your phone for long stretches of the day, set a timer. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. You can also download a “Tibetan Eye Chart which will lead your eyes on a series of exercises to stretch and maintain and, many claim, improve vision. A diet low in sugar, high in brightly colored fruits and vegetables and dark leafy greens is rich in antioxidants. Cataracts are caused by oxidative damage to the lens. Excessive sugar deposits on the retina, the nerves, the blood vessel, the kidneys, causing reduced function in these tissues which will affect your vision as well.
I discovered that if I drink a ODUJH JODVV RI ZDWHU ¿UVW WKLQJ in the morning, the dryness in my eyes goes away. Fish oil supplements also help lubricate the eyes. Spend time in nature, looking far out onto the horizon. A mountain top, a cliff over the ocean are perfect places to stretch your vision. Then, look at something close up. Focus on the minute – a leaf, a seashell, a rock, then again – outward and back, changing perspective. We all need a little vision these days. Let’s do what we can to support our eyes.

M
ost travelers think of “ETA” as the universal shorthand for “estimated time of arrival,” but this well-known abbreviation is getting a new meaning: Electronic Travel Authorization. Though it may sound unfamiliar today, it won’t for long because 27 countries around the world have already adopted ETA entry requirements. This new authorization is already required by some countries, whether travelers are staying in the destination or simply passing through. In New Zealand, for example, even cruise passengers are required to apply for the NZeTA authorization, which is valid for two years for multiple entries of up to 90 days per visit. Similarly, Australia’s ETA is mandatory for all visitors and, although the ETA is free, there is
an online application and a service charge. Even though the process has been made easier with an online application, it’s best not to wait until the last minute to secure any necessary visas. Until now, visitors from the United States and 60 other countries have enjoyed visa-free access to countries in the European

Union. However, that changes beginning January 1, 2021, when an ETA will be required of travelers of every age who plan to visit EU member nations (referred to as the Schengen Zone). The new authorization, known as an ETIAS visa waiver, is easy to secure, thanks to an online application and nominal fee that

can be paid via credit or debit card. Although you’ll need a valid passport to apply, you won’t need to show proof of upcoming travel plans. The ETIAS are valid for three years, subject to your adherence to its terms (including spending no more than 90 days within every 180-day period in Schengen Zone countries), so
having one at the ready is essential for those who love a spontaneous getaway. According to the European Commission, the ETIAS’s goals include speeding up border crossings; improve security, and enhancing the EU’s mission “to identify any security or irregular migratory risks posed by Visa-exempt visitors”. While it adds another step to the travel planning process, it’s hard to argue with an international initiative designed to enhance security. t took a few weeks to prepare, but autumn swiftly ushered in harsh winds and rain that preceded chilling nights. For me, October is an exciting month for one reason: the World Series. One aspect about this year that hasn’t disappointed me was baseball (and the fact that it was one of the few major sports that has gone throughout its season without any problems). Baseball is one of my favorite sports to watch for a couple of reasons. First, its rich history, which spans back over 150 years, is unparalleled in American sports and makes the game all the more captivating to watch. Players are still challenging records that were set several decades prior by those who were immortalized at the hall of fame. Another aspect of baseball that makes it one of best is the fact that it is an extremely international sport. Leagues in Japan, Korea, and Mexico are
extremely popular and contribute to their respective countries’ love for baseball. Watching leagues in other countries gives me quite an insight into their sport’s culture and at least when it comes to baseball, I’ve learned to appreciate the differences in strategy. I am also interested in an aspect of baseball that many people don’t consider often. It’s the mental side of the sport. Intimidation, for example, takes part in every sport, but the battle between pitcher and batter is all about seeing who EUHDNV ¿UVW The pressure of being on a professional baseball team is all about performing at the
right time, no matter how good one is. It’s a game of endurance, and the ability to perform under pressure. To me, watching baseball is about looking at the details and appreciating the complexities within a simple sport.

ith public facilities closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is almost impossible for people experiencing homelessness to meet their basic needs. With winter coming, the weather could be life-threatening to people without housing. In collaboration with Just Compassion East Washington County and Washington County, the city will be opening the Beaverton Severe Weather Shelter (BSWS) in a more robust way than before. This year, the shelter will serve 30 adults experiencing homelessness per night, providing a warm, safe space to shelter-in-place and work on a transition to housing. The shelter is anticipated to open at the Beaverton Community Center (12350 SW Fifth St.) on

Sunday, Nov. 15, and will stay open through March 2021. To best maintain the health and safety of everyone involved, the shelter will stay open 24 hours a day/seven days a week during this period and will follow precautions for the COVID-19 pandemic. The continuous opening will guarantee beds for enrolled guests at the shelter and more opportunity for referrals to needed social services.
The shelter is one of several shelters for adults operating within Washington County with the goal of ensuring no one dies of exposure this winter.

ust like every other conference this fall, Washington County’s Family Caregiver Conference will take place virtually for health and safety reasons. Instead of a one-day conference like the past 16 years, the Heart, Humor and Hope Family Caregiver Virtual Learning Series will be offered in separate workshops over several weeks in November, which is National Family Caregivers Month. “Of course, we are disappointed we can’t hold our traditional in-person conference this year,” said Shannon Baggerman, program coordinator with the Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services Family Caregiving Program. “However, we hope this year’s format might allow caregivers who normally wouldn’t be able to VSDUH DQ HQWLUH GD\ WR EHQH¿W from attending some of the workshops.” The workshops are intended for unpaid family and friend caregivers. The sessions will take place over Zoom. The topics, languages, dates and times are:

the region’s public art portfolio with a delightful new twist – music-making seating. The premise behind the new works are that they are “functional art” that is dynamic, unique, engaging and, as the title suggests, people can sit on them. We received 33 design submissions by 15 artists. The review panel, comprised of representatives
from the four districts where the art work will be installed (Beaverton, Tigard, Forest Grove, Cedar Mill) paid special attention to each submission and the manner in which the bench would actually be “played” with; whether plunked, bonked, and/or cranked, the panelists remarked that they wanted each design to be clearly distinct from others

o to any scholastic chess tournament and you’ll see the “K brothers, Kavish (age 14) and Krish (age 9) Patel. They have been taking chess lessons and playing for 3 years. Now, the COVID-19 virus has altered some of their chess plans. Kavish had hoped to be on the Jesuit High School chess team, playing in the high school chess league, but it now meets through chess. com instead of in person. He has to compete remotely in on-line chess tournaments and in Skype games with friends. What Kavish likes
about chess is that it taught him to stop and think more carefully when facing problems, including with other activities like robotics. Krish attends Montessori School of Beaverton on-line. He also plays chess on-line and with friends. He is part of a Lego Robotics team. They both miss going to tournaments and seeing and playing with friends but they are having fun taking chess lessons on Skype with Coach Larry.
