MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Hello Beaverton! Welcome to another issue of The Beaverton Resource Guide. As a full-color, monthly newspaper that’s dedicated to the positive aspects of our community, you can be sure to find interesting and uplifting stories about what makes our city one of the best in the country (ranked #3 nationally for “Best Places to Raise a Family” by www.livibility.com, 2018). The goal of The BRG is simple and can be easily read at the top of each month’s cover: “Connecting Community”. To me, this means connecting people who live, work or shop in and around Beaverton with the abundant local resources available here. So, whether you’re a shop or a shopper, we’ll do our best to introduce you to each other. Are you looking for something to do out of the house? We’ve got you covered there too with a variety of options in our Out & About section. Find the county’s event calendar, the Beaverton Farmers Market Vendor Guide, regional theatre line ups, a full list of library programs and more. The BRG is available for pickup at over 170 locations from large grocery stores to small dentist offices. For information about placing an ad, stories, distribution or anything else, email BRG@CedarHouseMedia.com. Sincerely, Michael Wong (Managing Editor) PS. Don’t forget to visit our website www.beavertonresourceguide.com.

Want to do something about climate change? Start young. For families in Portland Public Schools
This fall, PGE Project Zero is partnering with Portland Public Schools and In4All to create an opportunity for every child, including your own, to better understand the climate crisis and how we can combat it together.
Ask your student’s teacher how they can use this curriculum to help connect the schoolhouse to your house.
These relationships with schools and teachers introduce students to climate curriculum that is rooted in both science and social studies, offering real-world examples of careers related to clean energy.
For all families

Protecting your health and property since 1949! A local family owned & operated business.
Check out some fun science and climate activities at the link below. And keep an eye out: We’re bringing climate curriculum to a school near you soon.
If we can transform classroom topics into at-home conversations and then into real-world actions, we can help create the future climate leaders we need.

Beaverton Symphony Orchestra Announces its Season Opening with two November concerts • November 5 at 7pm • November 7 at 3pm. Beaverton Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce two November concerts to take place November 5th and 7th. Both events will take place at the Village Church (330 SW Murray Blvd) in Beaverton. The concert’s lineup of pieces includes Bruce Stark’s Overture to New Beginnings, Gustav Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer (featuring soloist baritone Matthew Hayward), and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. The concert will include 1 hour of live music and will open with a 30-minute talk by orchestra director Travis Hatton. “All of us here at the BSO cannot begin to express how thrilled we will be to welcome you back into the hall for this concert,” says Hatton. “It's a celebratory concert on several levels. The first piece on the program is appropriately called ‘Overture to New Beginnings’ by Seattle-based composer Bruce
Stark. Then our special guest baritone Matt Hayward will sing the Songs of a Wayfarer by Gustav Mahler. More celebrations will follow as we honor the 251st anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven with a performance of his Symphony #7. I honestly cannot wait to see you there.”

opportunities for Washington County artists and cultural organizations. For the 2021-22 season, 12 workshops will be offered virtually via Zoom and in-person depending on the State of Oregon’s restriction guidelines. The series will be offered at no cost with
on-site and online donations accepted. We kick off the month with the workshop “Finding the ‘Fun’ in Fundraising for Nonprofits” on Thursday November 4 from 4-6pm. Following this is a 2-part Portfolio Review Workshop for Teens ages 14-19 years old. This will be held
on two Saturday’s from 10am-12 noon, the first on November 6 and the second on April 23. This is a great opportunity for teens to bring their work and engage in feedback and discussion with other artists and professions in the art field.
To register for these upcoming workshops, visit http://bit.ly/creativeimpactseries.

ANSWER: Each jurisdiction has their own set of rules. In Portland it is not only possible but required to get a permit when such temporary parking is needed. In Beaverton it would be illegal under most circumstances to “double-park” within the public right of way. The reality of the situation is that we know this type of observed parking takes place and rarely is enforcement action taken unless the disruption is substantial and unavoidable. Common sense is the key here. Q: Is failure to use your turn signals illegal or just impolite? ORS 811.395, 400 and 405 deal with definition of and use of signaling devices whether it be hands or mechanical. It is not an issue of etiquette, it’s the law. Q: I use my cell phone’s navigation system to find my way around town. Is it legal for me to hold the phone in my hand while using it as a map? ANSWER: No, you cannot “hold” your handheld mobile communication device to use any of its features (ie. your GPS mapping system) while driving your car, including when you are stopped at a red light. Holding the phone while using the speaker phone is also a violation (ORS811.507).
