n mid-January, I delivered my annual State of the City Address. I shared our successes from P\ Ĺ&#x2026;UVW WHUP DQG RXU SULRULWLHV for 2013 and beyond. Nearly 350 community, business and government leaders attended. In the address, I thanked the 5,000 residents who shared their bold vision for how we could LPSURYH RXU FLW\ Our residents regularly ask me: â&#x20AC;&#x153;why is Beaverton successful?â&#x20AC;? There are two things that make us strong: First, we have the most engaged residents in Oregon. Second, ZH GHHSO\ YDOXH RXU SDUWQHUVKLSV 3HRSOH and organizations working together for a common good; WKLV LV P\ PRVW SUL]HG WRRO 6RPH H[DPSOHV RI KRZ FROODERUDWLRQ KDV EHQHĹ&#x2026;WHG %HDYHUWRQ LQFOXGH ÄŞ Working with Metro to bring 6RXWK &RRSHU 0RXQWDLQ LQWR WKH FLW\ÄĄSURYLGLQJ WKH FLW\ with room to grow. Last VSULQJ WKH FLW\ UHFHLYHG D million CDC JUDQW WR SDUWQHU with local agencies to become the Beaverton Community Health Collaborative (BCHC). Senator Ron Wyden said WKDW WKLV KHDOWK SDUWQHUVKLSÄĄZKLFK VXSSRUWV IDPilies and others without health FDUHÄĄLV SODFLQJ %HDYHUWRQ ÄĽRQ the right side of history.â&#x20AC;? The state of our city is strong. The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 with the help of the city and the Beaverton Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. new Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District trail connecting Jackie Husen Park and the Jordan Woods Natural Area (formerly Jordan Park) near Cedar Mill is now open to the public. The new Jordan Trail is eight feet wide and made of asphalt to ensure ADA accessibility. It replaces unpaved and unmaintained trails. By design, the trail protects signiÂżcant trees and limits encroachment into sensitive creek and wetland areas, which in turn beneÂżts wildlife. In addition to the quarter-mile community trail, THPRD created an overlook, two pedestrian bridges, a boardwalk, three trail access points, and secondary soft-surface trails as part of the project, which took nearly one year to build.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal was to create a neighborhood recreation area that complements the natural resources in the area,â&#x20AC;? explained Hal Bergsma, THPRD director of Planning. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted a community trail that is compatible with the natural resources, links people to those resources, and is accessible for everyone. We believe we have succeeded on all those points. This is a beautiful addition to the trails system in the Cedar Mill area.â&#x20AC;? The trail starts at Jackie Husen Park (10955 NW Reeves Street, which includes a parking area) and heads north to an overlook that allows users a view of Cedar Mill Creek and the 22-acre Jordan Woods Natural Area. The natural area consists of steep, wooded slopes with native bigleaf maples, red cedar and alders. Cedar Mill Creek and Kitchen Creek wind through the lowest elevations and are accompanied by wetlands in some areas. Improvements also include a softsurface trail that follows a pathway downslope, across Cedar Mill Creek,

and back upslope to another trailhead at Lost Park Drive. Pedestrian bridges and a boardwalk minimize user impacts on the sensitive surroundings. The project was funded by THPRDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2008 voter-approved bond measure. Construction started in the spring of 2012. Contractors removed

temporary safety barriers and opened the trail to the public on March 8.

Beaverton middle school student with a passion for music is being recognized as one of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top youth volunteers. Every summer, Cody Grater helps music teacher Clare Borquein clean and organize her classroom. He started when he was a fourth-grader at Bonnie Slope Elementary School. Four years later, as a student at Meadow Park Middle School, he continues to give back. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the one who got me interested into music and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big part of my life right now,â&#x20AC;? Grater said. Last year, budget cuts forced Borquein to move to a new school, and Grater helped paint the dingy walls of her room a bright cheerful color for its incoming students. The best part about helping his teacher, Grater said, was â&#x20AC;&#x153;imagining the kids WKDW ZHUH JRLQJ WR ZDON LQ WKH ÂżUVW GD\ of school and see their dusty music room transformed to a place where they can smile and grow.â&#x20AC;? club for one hour a week during the schoolyear. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cody is a great example of a leader, a volunteer; somebody whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thinking not â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what can I get out of this or is it go-

ing to be fun for meâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;will it make me feel good if I give?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trying to make a difference,â&#x20AC;? Borquein said. As part of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, Cody gets $1,000, a silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C., this May. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of 102 state honorees who earned a spot in the awards contest. 'XULQJ WKH WULS LQ HDUO\ 0D\ KHÂśOO ÂżQG out if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top 10 youth volunteers. The winners receive an additional $5,000, plus a $5,000 grant for a charitable organization of their choice. The same awards program also distributes Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Volunteer Services Awards to local honorees on behalf of President Barack Obama.

I recently had the pleasure of attending HART's previous production in March entitled, How the Other Half Loves. I had never heard of this production so didn't know what to expect. But from the opening scene with Danielle Valentine's character Fiona Foster interacting with her onstage husband Frank (played by Michael Henry Rouches), I became thoroughly enthralled and completely entertained. The talent level of the HART actors is not at all what one would expect from a community theater. I must say that the 20 minute drive to downtown Hillsboro is nothing compared to the great 'Date Night' value you'll receive by seeing a show at HART.

Directions: Slice onions in rings and break apart (you can slice rings in Â˝ which is what I did). SautĂŠ onions in butter until caramelized (approx.. 10 minutes). Add salt and pepper. Now what my kids think of as ÄĽGUHVVLQJÄŚ LV D P\ULDG RI Ĺ&#x2020;DYRUV from Trader Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and New Seasons ZLWK KHUEV ,ÄŁG QHYHU HYHQ +($5' of until I could make enough PRQH\ WR EX\ DQ XSVFDOH PHDO 6R I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it was too strange when my 4 yr-old was chuckling every night at dinner, claiming the condiment was â&#x20AC;&#x153;emba-wathingâ&#x20AC;?

X OLNH HYHU\ SDUHQW XVW who has come before w us, my husband and I have worked hard to ha ggive our children a good lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not necessarily better than the one that we had-- just different in the things we thought we lacked.
