Note from the Editor Hello Beaverton, So, who doesn’t like a neighborhood parade? Homemade oats, marching bands, cool cars, happy crowds and candy thrown to eager little hands all up and down the parade route. Could this be the one single community event that brings our city together like no other? Well, in this editor’s opinion, it’s a resounding “YES!â€? and that’s why we at Cedar House Media are happy to start this month’s paper with a guide explaining everything you need to know about the whole day’s festivities. That’s right. This year’s planners made the brilliant decision not only to move the parade up one month to August (and out of the rain), but they’re also combining the parade into an all-day affair which includes Bike Beaverton at Schifer Park, Family Fun Run, Beaverton Community Vision and of course the Old Town Festival with food, live music, arts and crafts and two areas for kid friendly activities. So as the city likes to say, “This is 5 Fantastic Events in 1 Wonderful Day!â€? Well, thanks for picking up a copy of your community paper and I’ll be seeing you at the parade. Sincerely Yours,

parks and housing complexes across the district. They were also visible at the Park District’s summer concerts.

And why not? The warmest weather of the year tends to happen now, and the pools are a great way to cool off and have fun. Raleigh Swim Center, located at 3500 SW 78th Ave., Portland, is a 25-yard pool offering all levels of swim instruction. Other programs include aquatic specialty and Âżtness classes, open swims and lap swims. Call 503/629-6315 or visit www. thprd.org/aquatics/raleigh/home.cfm for more information. Somerset West Swim Center, located at 18300 NW Park View Blvd., Portland, is a 25-yard pool that offers instruction for all levels starting at age 3; lap and open swims are scheduled throughout the day. Call 503/629-6311 or visit www.thprd.org/aquatics/ somersetwest/home.cfm for more information.

Somerset West Swim Center, just off the Sunset Highway at 185th Avenue, is one of two outdoor pools operated by THPRD. The other is Raleigh Swim Center in the Raleigh Hills area. The pools are great places for families and individuals to cool off and have fun during the summer.

THPRD’s outdoor wading pool can be found at Sunset Swim Center, 13707 NW Science Park Drive, and is for ages 5 and younger. Call 503/629-6315 or visit www.thprd.org/aquatics/ sunset/wadingpool.cfm for more information.

The Rec Mobiles (a converted ambulance and van) are stocked with games, sports activities, face painting, and arts and crafts. They can also be rented year-round for company picnics, birthday parties, block parties, and more. For more information, call 503/629-6340 or visit www.thprd.org/activities/ recmobile.cfm. THPRD operates two Rec Mobiles, one of which is this converted ambulance. The Rec Mobiles and Nature Mobile are a big part of the district’s community outreach effort, especially during the summer. They bring fun and games to thousands of children unable to attend camps or travel to THPRD facilities.

Raleigh Pool will remain open on a limited schedule through Sept. 16. Somerset Pool and the outdoor wading pool at Sunset Swim Center will stay open through Sept. 5.
