BRG History

The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

o really appreciate the new ¿sh stocking pipe at Progress Lake, you have to understand the old delivery system. Because the ¿sh arrive on an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife truck that must be parked at street level, high above the lake, THPRD Maintenance staff had to transport them down to the lake one net at a time. The process took a lot of time, and trudging up and down the steep hill was hazardous to the ¿sh and to the people carrying them. Then someone at ODFW had a better idea: install a pipeline between the street and lake. Open the pipe, hook up a line to the ODFW truck, and Àush the ¿sh

through the line and into the lake. When this was done recently, 800 rainbow trout were dispatched to the lake in little more than one minute. Gravity moved them at a rapid but safe pace. THPRD Maintenance (Roger Whitaker, John Henshaw, John Klotzback and Jim Kelsey), Natural Resources (Kyle Spinks), and ODFW partnered on the installation of the pipe in late March. The next day, ODFW stocked the lake with 2,700 trout in less than 10 minutes. The Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation funded the 90foot, eight-inch-diameter pipe and hardware, and Park District Maintenance installed the line. “The foundation’s goal is to ‘provide funding to beneÂżt

¿sh, wildlife, and habitat projects throughout Oregon,’ and this project ¿t their goal perfectly,� Spinks said. The addition of the ¿sh stocking pipe complements the December 2010 installation of a Àoating ¿shing dock at Progress Lake, which was partially funded through ODFW. Since opening the lake to angling in 2011, many hundreds of children and adults have ¿shed along the western shore and from the dock. And now, with a slick new way to keep the lake stocked with trout, this new ¿shin’ hole in south Beaverton may become even more popular.

Four black crakes hatched at the Oregon Zoo last month (and managed to stay still long enough for a photo session). These puffballs on stilts were born in the Vollum Aviary and are being hand-reared behind-the-scenes until they’re large enough to avoid becoming snacks for some of the aviary’s other residents, such as the hamerkop. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, black crakes belong to a family of birds that include our local coots.
