Photo by Elaine Hodne: “This image was taken at Beaverton City Park last year. As I arrived at the fountain, I noticed a distinct rainbow in the water as the sun hit it. The fountain alone is beautiful, but the rainbow was an added blessing... a treasured gift from a loving and merciful God...” Read about Elaine on page 30!

Look for the signs of beauty By Lead Pastor Doug Boyd

And your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘Build yourselves houses in the mountains and trees and what people construct. Then feed on all kinds of fruit and follow the ways made easy for you by your Lord.’ From their bellies come a drink of different colors in which there is healing for people. There truly is a sign in this for those who think. Qur’an 16:68-69. y one and only granddaughter, Pippa (not quite yet two), is learning about the birds and the bees. In their home in Tennessee, her moms have on their porch a nest in a grocery bag. Quite unexpectedly, a mother bird built the nest and just this week, two little baby birds (“Buhh-deesâ€? as Pippa called them) have hatched. Not a story to make the news. But I share it as one who needs a sign (“ayahâ€? in Arabic) upon ZKLFK WR UHĂ€HFW 7KH VFKHPHUV RI the world demand their attention DQG LI ZH DUH QRW FDUHIXO ZH FDQ VSLUDO GRZQ D GDUN SDWK RI IHDU DQG cynicism, ultimately despair, when

BRG History: The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals: Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. BRG Advertising: With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the writers and do not necessarily reect the position of Cedar House Media and/or the Beaverton Resource Guide. 2 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 8–Issue 8 (August 2018)

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District: Connecting People, Parks and Nature

Major renovation of Cedar Hills Park begins; site to reopen in fall of 2019 by Bob Wayt

Construction is now underway on one of the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s largest bond measure projects, the redevelopment of Cedar Hills Park. The project will create a long list of amenities for the public: multipurpose synthetic turf athletic Âżeld, splash pad, play equipment, multipurpose sport courts, sand volleyball and bocce courts, community garden, picnic shelter, permanent restrooms, and concession stand. The park – adjacent to Cedar Hills Boulevard and Walker Road in Beaverton – will also offer many new ADA-accessible features, enabling people experiencing disability to more easily enjoy recreation in the park. “We’re excited about this bond project,â€? said Doug Menke, www.BeavertonResourceGuide.com

THPRD general manager. “The park is in a great location and has been well-used, but it hasn’t been redeveloped since we acquired it in the late ‘50s. It’s going to be a much better park when we’re Âżnished.â€? Redevelopment of the 12acre site will take the next two summers. Work will Âżnish in October 2019 – just after the Beaverton School District opens its new William Walker Elementary School next door in September 2019. Because the park and the school are so close together and both THPRD and BSD have major construction projects to do simultaneously, the two entities have closely coordinated their efforts while also informing the public and gathering input on plans. Most notably, as part of the new school design, a new entrance will be built off of Cedar Hills

will be the district’s third, joining previous installations at Conestoga Recreation & Aquatic Center and Timberland Park. It will be free to the public to use during warmer weather months. For project updates, visit http://www.thprd.org/districtinformation/2008-bond-measure/ detail/cedar-hills-park/25.

Bridge Meadows Artist Spotlight Bettie Kirkland ART Bettie Kirkland is a very talented artist who sold prints of her beautiful work in our Art Bridge Collective show in April. The theme for our show was “Reflections” and Bettie’s art work certainly shows wonderful reflections of her life experiences and skills. After retirement Bettie started art classes for fun. She wanted to learn how to draw. After several years of drawing classes, Bettie made the transition to Pastels. She really loves all the bright vibrant colors that are available

to work with and puts them to good use. Bettie has a wonderful grasp on figure drawing and has done some beautiful examples of the skills she learned over the years. Her pieces bring much life to the art papers she magically enhances with her strokes of many colors. Bright colors and images that draw you into the joy of the figures dancing, images that stir your feelings, and may even take you to her zebras drinking. Bettie captures moments in life’s flowing currents. Bridge Meadows, 5995 SW Menlo Drive, Beaverton.

Join me for a six-week class to learn basic watercolor techniques as we practice painting differ-ent elements: flowers, skies, rocks/ mountains, water, etc. We will experiment with different styles of each element using value contrast, color theory and principles of composition.

Where to Stay Cool in Washington County PARKS Hot weather could be dangerous for anyone, but especially for young children, older adults or anyone with an existing heart or lung illness. “We urge people to limit their time outdoors if possible, wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing, drink plenty of water, and stay in air-conditioning as much they can,” says Washington County Deputy Health Officer Dr. Christina Baumann. Washington County Emergency Management has compiled a list of locations where people can stay cool.

Little Bit lives up to her name weighing in at just over 10 pounds…she is full of a little bit of sweetness, sass, silliness and sensitivity. Little Bit spent every day of her 7 year old life with one person until she passed earlier this year. She responds VERY WELL to females, usually coming right up to them to give them kisses and then rolling onto her back for playful belly rubs. She does well with the three pugs in her foster home but may do well as the only dog in the house soaking up every bit of attention she can get. She gets VERY excited at meal time and does a song and dance routine for you as you get her meal ready. Little Bit has a slight head tilt and will run in a circle when she is stressed or excited. She is very sensitive to loud noises and they can trigger reactive behavior. New situations can be very stressful so she will need a calm quite home that offers her stability. Little Bit is potty trained but will need a home where someone is home most of the time to take

her outside. Little Bit is darling girl looking for a patient and understanding home.

What’s so special about this cookie dough? You know how there’s some things you eat and just say “wow, this is amazing!” — that pretty much sums up the responses from just about everyone who has tried this cookie dough. It’s edible and bakable cookie dough, pre-scooped into dough balls. What separates this dough from the rest of the pack is the ability to (safely) eat it raw or bake it, and it’s ready to go right out of the bag. No scooping required. A majority of the edible dough on the market is okay to eat raw, but isn’t designed to be baked. Most of the baking dough isn’t safe to eat raw. This dough combined the best of both worlds. That cheering you hear? That’s the sound of your 10,000 tastebuds screaming for more!

Columbia River Sourdough Visit Booth #45 REAL sourdough bread, made with care. We make our REAL sourdough bread using a natural yeast culture, maturing the starters over three days and hand forming the loaves and rounds, unlike commercial breads that are over processed with yeast to produce bread in unnatural time frames. Always check the label. Our bread is made the right way.

We are a family owned local wholesale bakery specializing in artisan sourdough breads. We do not yeast our sourdough, but age it over three days using a starter culture. This 3 day fermentation process naturally reduces the gluten content of the bread and provides probiotic benefits. The Glycemic Index of our sourdough is the lowest of all common breads. Our breads can also appeal to those with gluten intolerances, diabetics needs and of course all true sourdough lovers.

TBees Visit Booth #35 We are a small family business dedicated to providing our customers with quality, local raw honey and bee products to improve every day health. We are based in Sherwood Oregon and have over 300 hives working to bring quality bee products from our hives straight to your home.

Back in beautiful Portland, Oregon, Elias set out to approach the craft of charcuterie with purity and patience, recreating a nearly extinct traditional technique that is seldom seen in America.

Olympia Provisions Visit Booth #101-3 Salumist Elias Cairo, grew up first generation Greek-American with a father who made charcuterie at home. Doing things the old-fashioned way was commonplace. Elias later journeyed to Europe to apprentice in the kitchens of masters. It was there that he rediscovered the art of curing meat and found inspiration in the markets and mountain towns of the old world.

THEATRE The Story: Not unlike our current sociopolitical landscape, Paris in the 1660’s was rife with scandal and social abuses. Lawsuits were rampant and anyone who spoke their truth was subject to being branded a social outcast, especially our hero, Alceste (rhymes with “pest”) who refuses to go along to get along! Unfortunately for him, he happens to be in love with Celemene, the most sought-after coquette, who relishes gossip parties and notches her fan with all of her adoring beaus. Her phone rang again. No Caller ID.

Her phone buzzed again, and she scooped it up to keep it from rattling the metal table it lay on. Frankly, the sound of it reverberating through the stacks was creeping her out. She looked again at the screen. No Caller ID.

Ten seconds later, the screen lit up again. No Caller ID. She was starting to worry it was a bill collector. But if that were the case, they’d leave a message. She checked; no messages.

Email your guess along with 1) where you picked up the paper and 2) what your favorite story or section was to: BRG@cedarhousemedia.com. We will enter your name into our drawing at the end of the month. Happy Hunting! has now developed the confidence and independence to complete assignments on her own. Kumon has helped her understand that she can do it herself and that learning and reading isn’t scary but instead has opened up a new world of learning and excitement. I would urge any parent looking to help their child who struggles with reading or school assignments to give Kumon a try.
