Isn’t December just the most wonderful month of the year? Well, we at Cedar House Media sure think so. First, we start off the month with the annual tree lighting ceremony at the library on Dec. 2 at 7pm and then go straight into the curiously funny performances of Happy Hollandaise! by our own Beaverton Civic Theater with showings that run through Dec. 11th (see page 22). Head on down to our historic Broadway street on Dec. 10 (see page 7) and you’ll ďŹ nd decorative lighting, free food, wine and treats during “A Taste of the Holidaysâ€?. And let’s not forget the star of the month because Santa himself will be making daily appearances at both Washington Square Mall (see page 17) and Cedar Hills Crossing (see page 5). So enjoy the holidays Beaverton, be safe and have a very Merry Christmas!

ou’ll notice we’ve gone through a lot of changes over the last few years here at Cedar Hills Crossing. We’ve not only redeveloped the property (receiving a major facelift), we’ve also changed our name (formerly Beaverton Mall), and added multiple new merchants to the property including Powell’s Books, New Seasons Market, and our latest addition, Sports Authority. We are also excited to announce a new restaurant coming soon, Veggie Grill, who will be joining us in the very near future (construction is underway). With over sixty shops and restaurants (including two grocery stores,

First, water was heated in a copper boiler on a wood or coal EXUQLQJ VWRYH RU LQ WKH ÀUHSODFH Soap shavings were added, and the mixture stirred with a long wooden stick. After the soap dissolved, previously sorted clothes were added separately in this order: whites, colored, heavy work garments and rags. When the

clothes had boiled for a several minutes, they were removed, put in a washtub, and scrubbed with homemade lye soap on a metal or glass washboard. They were then rinsed twice in clear water, wrung out by hand (unless a wringer was available,) and hung to dry. Bluing, starching, and stain removing were done on the same day. Family washday routines varied from region to region, but Mondays were the designated day. Laundry was, after all, the heaviest chore, and housewives had more energy at the start of the week. ith the holidays fast approaching, it is that time of year again to gather around WKH GLQQHU WDEOH DQG UHà HFW RQ what we are thankful for. For many families, it can also be a time to think about how we can be more giving and how we can be of service to those families in need especially during the holidays. Casey’s Corner Food Pantry , located at the Murrayhill Christian Church in a great place to lend a hand, not just for the holidays , but anytime. Established in September of 2005, Casey’s Corner is a Washington County Food Pantry helping families affected by the economy or unforeseen circumstances by providing food. It is run by a team of enthusiastic and concerning volunteers

who are in charge of sorting, storing and stocking and delivering the food. The pantry works closely with the OR Food Bank to acquire food and with Care to Share to distribute food to the people in the Beaverton/Aloha community in need. Hunger comes in all sizes, shapes, color and age. The Beaverton School District has experienced the fact that many of their students come from families in need, and also many of the children were experiencing hunger as they try to learn. Casey’s Corner started serving these families referred by the Beaverton School District on Wednesday afternoon and evenings. The increase of hungry families in the Beaverton/ Aloha area also resulted in the opening of the food pantry to Monday

If you are interested in lending a helping hand this holiday season, Casey’s Corner is a great organization to donate to. You can call them directly and ask them what their current needs are for their pantry. Donate a gift in the memory of your loved one or adopt a family in need. 5. Observe the holidays in ways which are comfortable for you. There is no right or wrong way of handling holidays. Once you’ve decided how to observe the time, let others know. 6. Try to get enough rest; holidays can be emotionally and physically draining. 7. Allow yourself to express YOUR FEELINGS. appy December to all you Speeders! This time of year can mean many different things to many. For our older friends this can be especially hard. This month I am spotlighting a local community that works hard to make the holidays cheery and bright for their residents and for those who come to visit. December at Creekside Village Retirement is always a treat. They decorate their lobby, dining room, hallways and community rooms all for the residents. The residents chip in too! Each year the residents put together a winter village that takes up seven deep window sills. Hundreds of pieces make up this village, complete with snow! Their dining room theme

is gingerbread and gum drops – how appropriate. They even have hand crushed candy canes to add to hot cocoa which is just what’s needed on cold winter days. Their large community room is decorated in all snowPHQ DQG VQRZà DNHV ,W WUXO\ LV D winter wonderland. Each year Creekside has their traditional Tree Trimming Party, where the residents decorate the large holiday tree that greets you in the lobby. They take bus rides to see the Christmas lights in our area. Residents bake holiday cookies together with the staff and take an annual trip to Albertina Kerr for lunch. Creekside invites you to enjoy a few holiday events with them. On December 9th from

by Jolene Guptill

2-3:30pm they will have a Christmas Dance. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy music by John Lazzari. On December 16th at 7pm the Northwest Children’ Theater will have a Holiday Performance. Refreshments will be served. They do ask that you RSVP for these events. 503643-9735. Do stop by, enjoy the decorations ... they’ll have a hot cup of cocoa waiting, complete with candy cane pieces, just for you! Remember to check your speed and enjoy the ride! 4QFFEFS 4QPUMJHIU If you have questions or would like Jolene to feature you in a future Speeder Spotlight, please email us: bbd@cedarhousemedia.com

ven seasoned drivers can be caught off guard when moving from a drier time of year to a more traditional climate, grey and often times wet. Drivers have become lulled into complacency and forget that the road surface becomes a completely different animal once saturated. Oils that sat in the cracks and crevices of a concrete or asphalt road now bubble to the surface making for a much slicker commute. Windshield wipers are put into overtime and it makes visibility a challenge with the rain attacking the glass. It is past time that we give some serious consideration to driving in inclement weather. As we look around us at our fellow

Oregonian commuters it’s surprising how wet weather catches us unaware of how to respond. And just a few inches of snow sends us into a panic and can literally shut down a city because many of us are not prepared or skilled enough to deal with snowy or icy conditions. A common occurrence, especially on highways and freeways is hydroplaning. Hydroplaning occurs when water builds up between the rubber tires and road surface leading to the loss of traction and control. You may hear high engine noise and begin to drift. Recovery involves easing off the accelerator and, if necessary, lightly pumping the brakes. Prevention strategies

include maintaining proper tire pressure, unworn tires, reduction of speed and trying to avoid standing water. 0RVW WUDIÀF VDIHW\ UHFRPmendations begin with reducing speeds, allowing a comfortable and legal distance between yourself and the car ahead, avoiding distractions such as cell phone use and keeping your car well maintained. We might add driving defensively to the list. Driving in winter conditions presents similar but different driving tactics. If there is ice or snow on the road you must take extra care. Don’t use cruise control in wet, icy or snowy weather. Position your hands on the steering wheel at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock

or lower to improve steering ability and avoid a deployed airbag. If you lose traction, gradually slow down – don’t slam on the brakes. Steering, braking and accelerating smoothly are keys to maximum vehicle control on slippery surfaces. Steer just enough to follow the path you intend. People often steer too much or too fast. Use extra caution while driving on bridges or concrete highways: LFH IRUPV ÀUVW RQ WKHVH VXUIDFHV Slow down in advance of shaded areas (especially curves) where ice and snow are the last to melt. It’s always a good idea to have a plan in case travel during inclement weather causes you to be stranded. Winter safety kits are good to have at any time but if you

plan to drive through the passes or in remote areas during the winter months they are a must. Most emergency service providers suggest you carry at least the following: extra warm clothes and blankets, water and snack items, cell phone and charging device, small VKRYHO DQG ÀUVW DLG NLW 'HSHQGing on who and how many people will be in the car could cause that list to get longer. Sharon Haugen and Susan Bartholomew oversee the Friday Night Fun program. They count all the children who show up and order the right amount of pizza. At Spencer House, Haugen supervised kids playing games while Bartholomew helped others complete an art project: They rolled a marble in white paint, then rolled it onto black construction paper to create a Halloween spider web. “We also read to the children,’’ said Haugen, who teaches preschool during the day. “The kids really like the stories.’’ For Brandon Price – he with the dyed green hair – Friday Night Fun is a highlight of his week.

hired a celebrated gourmet chef to prepare her famous Hasenpfeffer Hollandaise Sauce for her dinner guests, the new vicar and his wife. Unfortunately, the chef is late, the guests are early, and there are burglars on the loose in the neighborhood. To top it all off, Claire’s father has been hit on the head and thinks he’s the leading man in all of the West End theatre productions! With the help of her brother, George, Claire tries to keep it together. But where is the holiday spirit? How will it all end?

he realization of any idea is a process of evolution. You start with a concept, deYHORS D VWUDWHJ\ LQVWLWXWH D WDFWLF DQG Ă€QDOO\ with a little hard work and determination, you’ve established something tangible in the end. While the process can be daunting, it can be highly rewarding, just ask anyone at Little Busy Bodies, Inc. makers of Boogie Wipes. What started out as an idea to comfort sore, red, runny noses in children, has turned into an innovative consumer product line at a multi-million dollar business in just under four years. Boogie Wipes are pre-moistened saline wipes for the nose and face. The product has consumers declaring they are “amazingâ€? and “fantastic.â€? Some have even gone as far as to proclaim “Kleenex has nothing on you!â€? So just what makes Boogie Wipes so special that nearly 30,000 “fansâ€? follow them daily on Facebook and another 3,000 Tweet their boogie comings and goings on a regular basis? “Boogie Wipes are the only moist saline nose wipes currently on the market,â€? said Julie Pickens, CEO of Little Busy Bodies, Inc. and co-founder of Boogie Wipes. are truly unique in that the addition of the saline cleans noses, helps prevent chapping during cold and allergy season and is nonirritating.â€? Generally speaking, the idea was simple. Incorporate a proven technique for cleaning and soothing dry, stuffy noses – in this case natural saline – into a wipe. Add a series fun, refreshing scents so babies and children wouldn’t run away each time their parents tried to wipe their noses. Finally, get creative with a product name that would speak for itself and the rest would be history. While the intensive research and development process, including hiring a chemist, surveying consumers and interviewing manufacturers could not be underscored, Little Busy Bodies, Inc. had the right formula to succeed. This local success story hasn’t stopped with Boogie Wipes. The company recently launched a “tween-friendlyâ€? version of its wipes called Boogie Blasters and has further expanded its reach into the health and beauty market with the addition of Saline Soothers, D QRVH DQG IDFH ZLSH JHDUHG VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ WRward adults. In addition to the products themselves,

by Nicole Wiebe, Freelance Writer the company is continually involved in the creative, the philanthropic, and the notion that free is a very good price. The company is currently sponsoring a national contest called the “Snot Your Average Kid search which celebrates the generous, motivated and otherwise extraordinary kids of today. LBB also gives philanthropically to Goodwill Industries in addition to supporting the armed forces overseas. And just to keep things light and fun, LBB regularly gives away free product via its family/fan of the month submissions. “As a company, we are always looking for ways we can grow and show our leadership in the market and our commitment to families and the community, said Molly Wright, Marketing Manager at Little Busy Bodies, Inc. At the end of the day, we are a company of moms and dads who simply love what we’re doing. From the initial spark that gave two local women the idea to develop a moist wipe, to a company with projected sales of over $10 million, it’s that kind of dedication that has turned this once diamond in the rough into a true gem.
