Community Message

Make that Holiday Connection By Rev. David Randall-Bodman

T

he holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. My spirits are lifted by familiar traditions –lights, songs, meals, and gift giving. The timing of the holidays is perfect. Lately, the atmosphere of our world has been riddled with negativity, suspicion and fear. This fall I have been inspired by a book, The Leading Causes of Life, by Gary Gunderson and Larry Pray. It begins with what’s REYLRXV EXW GLIÂżFXOW WR GR IRFXV your energy and attention on ZKDW DIÂżUPV OLIH UDWKHU WKDQ ZKDW threatens or destroys it. 2QH RI WKH ÂżYH FDXVHV IRU OLIH is “connectionâ€?. The complex web of connections to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, fellow citizens, and even our natural world, that breathes life into us. We are blessed to live in a community with richly diverse people.

This holiday season, I encourage you to look for opportunities to cross typical boundaries of race, class, faith tradition, ethnicity and gender identity. Offer a smile and make eye contact. Know that the face looking back at you shares many of the joys and fears that you do. Be the gift you long to receive.

Rev. David Randall-Bodman is senior pastor at Bethel Congregational UCC in downtown Beaverton. You can hear his sermons Sunday mornings at 10am. For more information visit the church website: www.bethelbeaverton.org

#3( )JTUPSZ The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

#3( (PBMT Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. #3( "EWFSUJTJOH With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

%JTDMBJNFS The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the writers and do not necessarily reect the position of Cedar House Media and/or the Beaverton Resource Guide. 2 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 7–Issue 12 (December 2017)

ooLights is back! The Oregon Zoo’s walk-through winter wonderland of more than 1.6 million colored lights runs through Jan. 7 and it’s more popular than ever. Zoo guest services manager Ivan Ratcliff offers the following tips to save money, avoid lines and get the most enjoyment out of your ZooLights experience.

That is where moxabustion comes into play. What is Moxabustion? Moxabustion, or moxa, is a heat therapy that uses the burning of dried mugwort directly on, or close to, the skin. Moxa has been used across cultures, and is a staple of Chinese medicine. While this practice can be used to treat many symptoms such as asthma, nausea, gynecological issues as well as having immune boosting properties, my favorite application is in its healing effects on acute injuries. How Moxa Helps You Heal 1. Stimulating white blood cells SURGXFWLRQ LQIHFWLRQ ÂżJKWLQJ FHOOV DQG LQFUHDVLQJ KRZ IDVW they reach an injury 2. Increasing Qi circulation. In Chinese medicine, Qi refers to the vital substances that make up the body and allow it to perform life activities. When you injure yourself, Qi stagnates in the injured area causing pain 3. Promoting blood circulation.

Your body carries oxygen and nutrients to an injury through your blood so adequate circulation to a new injury is incredibly important. 4. Clearing metabolic waste. The process of healing leaves behind metabolic waste which can stagnate leading to lasting pain and arthritis. 5. Can be combined with a massage treatment to enhance the effects. Keep your injury from becoming a chronic and give moxa a try!

The announcement was made in Portland as part of the Edwards Center’s 11th annual awarenessbuilding and fundraising luncheon. According to Georgia Lampros, development director for the Edwards Center, THPRD was the Âżrst employer in the Portland area to give Oregonians with developmental disabilities the chance to work in their community. The relationship started in the 1980s, and since then more than three dozen workers have been able to master landscape and maintenance skills at the park district’s Jenkins Estate in Aloha. “It’s gratifying to know the impact our partnership with the

Q:

What is that green paint on the street for on the SE corner of Walker Road and Murray Blvd. Is it for Bikes? Are cars supposed to stay out of it? A: The green bike lanes are simple a way of making the bike lanes more visible. As a general rule, you cannot drive in or over a bike lane. There are a few exceptions to this, such as when you are accessing a parking spot, turning, and so on. Remember, bike lanes are for bikes. So if you are turning onto Walker Road from Murray Blvd and your wheel touches the green paint you shouldn’t get a ticket. However, if you cut over and drive down the bike lane(green paint) to make the turn you could get a ticket for driving in the bike lane.

Q:

Why is the bike lane painted blue on Hall Blvd just before you turn right onto Greenway Rd? I’ve seen green paint for bicycle areas but this blue reminds me of handicap parking. Thanks for clearing up what this blue area means. A: (Answered by TrafďŹ c Engineer, Jabra Khasho) The blue bike lanes were installed in the early 2000 before the green bike lanes were allowed. It will be removed and replaced with green ones when the street get an overlay.

he holiday season has begun, which generally means more gatherings with friends and family. While spending time with family can be enjoyable, it may also bring added stress. When we spend more time with family it can be easy to put their needs ahead of our own. We may feel pressure to spend time with family members, but it’s also important to make some time to take care of ourselves as well. Creating boundaries can help you enjoy the time you spend with your loved ones, instead of feeling overwhelmed by trying to do too much. For example, you may enjoy having your loved ones over for dinner, but you don’t have room for them to spend the night at your house. Take some time to UHÀHFW RQ \RXU ERXQGDULHV DQG notice where you are willing to be ÀH[LEOH LI QHHGHG :KHQ \RX DUH clear with yourself, you can more clearly communicate with others. You may also feel uncomfortable enforcing your boundaries,

especially if you haven’t done it before. Remember that boundaries help everyone understand what the rules are. When everyone has an idea of what’s going to happen and what’s expected of them, they are free to enjoy themselves without worrying about whether they are doing the wrong thing. Setting boundaries with family and friends can be challenging at any time, but especially during the holidays it may be harder to say no. Counseling can help you be more assertive and create healthier boundaries.

Water is Life, Essential to Our Health and Well-being By Jennifer Means, ND, LAC

ater is life. It brings the lush green to our land and, just as important, it is essential to our health and well-being. Water plays an important part in all our bodily functions and it can bring quick relief for many symptoms. Drinking water can relieve headaches, reduce kidney stones, ease bladder infections and cure constipation. When I wake, I drink a pint of water every morning to soothe my dry eyes. Yet, many people are concerned about our drinking water. High Five, an orange tabby, is a charmer and will run to greet you and give head butts. Give him love and he will give it right back, he loves to cuddle. He’s still a kitten at heart (born Oct 2016) very playful and is quite a goofball He loves to snuggle with his buddy Jack, another foster cat in his foster home, they would make a purr-fect pair. He has excellent house manners, neutered and current with vaccinations. Very friendly with new people, cats, dogs unknown. He hopes to meet you soon and hopefully win your heart.

Viva Village Holiday Party! Thursday, December 14

Viva Village Celebrates First Anniversary with Holiday Party. Since the Village opened on October 1, 2016, the number of members has more than doubled, from 35-72. Sixty-two Viva Village volunteers have contributed more than 10,400 hours of service, managing the day-to-day running of the Village, facilitating member and public events, and providing member services that range from transportation, household and garden chores, technology assistance, and more. Viva Village, which serves the Beaverton area, is one of six Villages in the Portland area that help older adults remain in their homes as they age by providing services, support, and community. 24 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 7–Issue 12 (December 2017)

about 16-months old. He is always there to greet anyone who enters the room. Jack loves attention, especially enjoys being pet and is a very sweet natured cat. He’s very playful, especially with other cats and kittens. Pull a string for him and he will play with it endlessly. Jack loves to play and snuggle with his friend, and foster brother, Hi-Five, they would be a great pair and provide lots of entertainment. He has great house manners, is neutered and has all his vaccinations. He would love to give you the same joy you would be giving him, in his own fur-ever home.

Kit Kat, a gray & white 1 year old female, had a rough start as a homeless young mom. She is now spayed and has had all her vaccinations. She is cautious at first, but after getting to know you

she craves attention. She will talk to you, enjoys petting and laps. She is still a bit skittish so an adult home would be best for her. She is not a fan of other animals, so being your one-and-only princess will be her happy place. She wants me to tell you, she will love you forever when you give her a fur-ever home.

Introducing Pacific Pug Rescue ADOPTION

“Hi, I’m Hank!”

Pacific Pug Rescue is a non-profit organization located in the Pacific Northwest. We are committed to saving the Pugs who need us most – the discarded and abandoned, seniors and special needs. So far this year we have taken in over 90 pugs….more than 60 of those have been seniors! Our out-of-pocket veterinary care for the current year is $127,996. The adoption donations given by forever families do not fully cover the treatment costs needed.

Enter 4-year-old Hank….one of our ‘last chance’ pugs. Hank's family was down on their luck. They didn't have a home, they were facing extreme financial hardship... the kind most of us will never know about, but man did they love Hank. But then all of sudden Hank wasn't walking... his back legs were completely paralyzed. He could not poo or pee on his own. This is where we came in, we were contacted to give Hank a nice send off, take him to a home, give him lots of treats and kisses and then hug him tight while we said goodbye. But fate had a different plan for Hank, twists no one could have expected. You see, it wasn't Hank's time. We scheduled him to see a Neurologist. The neurologist recommended an MRI and surgery to fix the disc that was most likely protruding, but the injury was so long ago,

Hank w/Foster Mom surgery might not help and it would cost $7000. But then she said there was something on the x-ray that caught her eye and it seemed like there may be an infection. Here is where the second twist comes in! After the x-ray they knew it was an infection called Diskspondylitis; a bacterial infection of the disks. So no MRI was needed, and no surgery! There was no back injury, just a really nasty infection that was horribly painful and had probably been there for months. The good news is that it is treatable.

For more information, contact us: http://www.pacificpugrescue.org/ 503.704.3587 For adoption information, email: adoptions@pacificpugrescue.org

After several rehab sessions, Hank is now able to stand on his own and has started trying to walk again! He is beginning to regain bowel and bladder function also! The neurologist has told us that we can fully expect Hank TO WALK AGAIN! Hank will be staying with us for the foreseeable future, until he is healthy enough for adoption.

Need Sleep? Don’t Turn Anything On! come more difďŹ cult to just day dream, count sheep, drift off and relax mentally.

COMMUNITY I typically have no issues falling asleep. But recently, one evening, I just could not drift off. I started to reach for my phone, to jump on social media to pass the time. But...then I stopped. I lay back and stared at the ceiling. I thought about a couple of fun projects I was working on at work. My mind wandered to thinking about my favorite college football team...and a huge game coming up that weekend. Next thing I knew, my alarm was ringing hours later...and it was time to get up. That was fun! Relaxing! I felt more refreshed! Whatever happened to Counting Sheep? I use social media. For fun, and work. I am on daily. There is almost not a day that goes by, that I don’t see someone in the same boat. Unable to sleep. And like me, they reached for their phones. Got on line, social media, asked if anyone was out there (to talk to)...etc...

We are so connected to our phones, being online and to social media (generally speaking). It has become 2nd nature to reach for those crutches to kill time and be entertained. Here’s the thing though: Turning on your devise, surďŹ ng the web, using social media is NOT relaxing. It is actually 180 from that. It engages the brain, drives up anxiety, and typically does not let you relax and drift off (mentally and physically). Sleep is important!! I have to be honest. On that evening when I could not fall asleep, the 1st few minutes of just lying in bed was hard. It was boring. But as I persisted...and resisted the urge to grab my phone...it got easier. More relaxing. More fun. More intriguing. More healthy. We are so programmed to be connected, entertained and move quickly... it has be-

Kinship House is a non-profit that was founded in 1996 and provides outpatient mental health services to foster and adopted children and their families. We specialize in championing children and families with target interventions during all stages of foster care, reunification, and adoption. In over twenty years of providing mental health services, we have served thousands of local children on their journey to the care only a permanent and healthy family can provide. With almost 3,000 children in foster care annually in the tricounty area, our services support children as they find their forever home. Our mission is to champion the successful permanency of each child who comes to our door. We understand that each individual’s unique history, culture, and needs must be considered as they journey to stable, healthy homes. Kinship House addresses the missing pieces in services provided to children touched by foster care and adoption. In addition to therapeutic services to address significant mental health concerns, we help children move beyond the trauma caused by their experience in the necessary but difficult foster care system. Our work helps minimize transitions and increases the chances of children settling into a stable, healthy and permanent home. We engage the family in therapy and offer a variety of therapy: drama, play, art, movement, and talk.

To learn more about how you can be involved with Kinship House, visit our website, www.kinshiphouse.org.

WE MAKE YOUR SMART KID EVEN SMARTER! The unique Kumon Method can give your child an academic advantage. At Kumon, we personalize our math and reading programs to fit the skill level of each child. So students of all levels learn to grasp concepts on their own, and take full ownership of their success. It’s how Kumon builds an academic advantage, in school and beyond.

Come to Beaverton’s New Year’s Eve Party! Loud at the Library

Blue and red lights illuminated the underbellies of snow-filled clouds. Fat flakes streaked from sky to pavement, lining Clyde’s ears and nose with cold and wet. He sneezed grouchily from his hiding place beneath the hedge.

What is the one place where you can dance under a disco ball, play mini-golf, drink beer and wine, nosh on some tasty snacks, play a game of Monopoly with your family, curl up in a cozy chair with a good book, and possibly witness a marriage proposal? Give up?

People rushed in and out of the blue house. He was pleased he’d managed to escape before they’d arrived, but it was luck really. Something had stirred him and he’d left. But as moments passed and he continued watching, the people rushed less, moved with quiet purpose instead. For one thing, the woman was gone, which was odd, now that Clyde came to think of it. She hadn’t walked as the others had. She had been rolled out on a bed instead.

The Beaverton City Library, of course! If that answer surprises you, then you may not have heard about the Beaverton Library Foundation’s New Year’s Eve fundraising event – Loud in the Library.

inaugural event. It was a great success, with over 300 people attending this one-of-a-kind party in the heart of Beaverton. [Interesting quote here? E.g., One party-goer commented, “Wow, Beaverton knows how to throw a party!”

Loud in Library takes place inside the Beaverton City Library, which is converted into a multi-functional party space, with a dance floor and music provided by Doc Titus, an array of family-friendly games provided by Parties, Inc., and food and beverages provided by Uptown Market.

The party starts at 9:00 pm and continues into the New Year, which is celebrated with a balloon drop in the library’s grand staircase and sparkling wine or cider toast at the stroke of midnight.

The Beaverton Library Foundation raises funds to provide a margin of excellence for our libraries. The Foundation sponsors the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program and offers cash prizes and scholarships to children and teens. t Tickets for this year’s event are on sale now at www. beavertonlibraryfoundation. org. t Individual tickets are $45, or $80 for two people who attend together. Each entry ticket also purchase 10 food, drink, and game tickets; additional tickets can be purchased at the event. t Parking is free. t All proceeds benefit the Beaverton Library Foundation.

Please join us for another exciting New Year’s Eve—it’s your big chance to get Loud in the Library!

This event it a major undertaking for the Foundation, which still needs volunteers to help set up, work the event, and clean up afterwards. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact jjohnson@beavertonoregon.gov.

cold, and the woman had barely moved when he’d settled in. He noticed when her chest stopped rising under him. Maybe that had caused him to stir. As the birds began to sing, Clyde’s hunger rose. He escaped through the screen to find breakfast, wondering in passing why the woman had gone away in the car with the red and blue lights.

Sounds carried on the wind with turkey smells. Wailing and chattering. More people came and more people left. This time, a man walked with his hands behind his back to the car with the red and blue lights. The car left as Clyde waited for his chance to sneak back in. After everyone left, he crept back through the hole in the screen and into the room where the woman had slept. Her bed lay empty, blankets still warm from when he’d padded carefully onto her chest for a nap. His black fur hadn’t been wet then, just
