BRG History: The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations. BRG Goals: Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. BRG Advertising:

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

Traffic Q&A:

With the Beaverton Police Department

Q:

How often can I do the Diversion Agreement if I am cited for DUII?

ANSWER: If you are cited for DUII and d you have no other alcohol-related actions s on your record in the past 10 years, and nd the court agrees, you may be able to enter a diversion agreement. If you complete the diversion requirements, you will not have a conviction for DUII on your driving record. The diversion agreement will show on your record. The court cannot offer you diversion if you have a commercial driver license or the offense occurred in a commercial motor vehicle.

Q:

Can I still be charged with DUII if I am driving on private property?

ANSWER: You may be charged with DUII if you commit the offense any place open to the general public for use of motor vehicles. This includes both public and privately owned areas, such as shopping center parking lots, even if a fee is charged for use of the areas. If you are arrested and take an implied consent test, a blood alcohol reading of less than 0.08 percent is indirect evidence that may be used, with other evidence, to decide if you were under the inuence of intoxicants. A reading of 0.08 percent or more is enough to establish that you were under the inuence of intoxicants. If a chemical test is not taken, you still may be convicted if the police have enough evidence to convince the judge or jury that you were driving under the inuence of intoxicants. If you have a trafďŹ c question that you'd like us to ask the Beaverton Police Department for this column, email us at: BRG@cedarhousemedia.com (For all other police questions, call the police non-emergency number: 503-526-2260)

Thursdays, December 6 and 13, 10:00 am–1:00 pm This class focuses on alla prima techniques to complete a painting in a few hours. Hopefully each student will have two finished paintings that will make wonderful gifts for the holiday sea-son. Oil and acrylic painters of all skill levels welcome.

Liz Walker—Suminagashi Paper Marbling Workshop Monday, December 3, 10:00 am– 2:30 pm Explore this fascinating Japanese paper marbling technique using water-based boku inks floated on plain tap water in a shallow tray. The name suminagashi literally means spilled ink. Learn how to create intricate marbled papers using sumi inks dropped from

small paintbrushes into a tray of water and printed on rice paper. Patterns and special colorful effects are achieved using a bamboo stylus and eyedroppers. This process is meditative, mesmerizing, and creates subtle, found-innature patterns and rings that are one-of-a-kind. We will create dozens of marbled rice papers which can be later used to collage onto heavier paper and developed further.

Leslie Boyce—Brave Color! Tuesdays, January 15, 22, 29, February 12, 19, 26, 12pm–2:30 pm Learn to mix watercolor with confidence in this six-week course! We’ll unravel the mysteries of color theory, transparency/opacity, granulation and staining pigments. We will learn how to mix luminous color instead of mud, vibrant grays, shades and blacks with limited and split-primary palettes. We’ll study value, intensity and color bias, and spend much of our class time making reference charts and color wheels which will be a great resource long after the class ends. We will put our color smarts to work through practice painting projects between classes.

When Elizabeth Higgins began taking watercolor classes at a community arts center seven years ago, something stirred. “Almost immediately,” she says, “I knew that I had found my passion.” Even as someone who had always loved learning and who cherished new ideas, as someone already well acquainted with several art forms, including drawing, writing, photography and book arts - watercolor was different. It had something special about it that spoke deeply to Higgins. So, she followed the call and dove in, developing her new craft both by taking classes and by giving herself the space and permission to explore possibilities and potentials without judgment. “I was not afraid to paint as much as possible, and let mistakes happen as I learned and developed from them.” Higgins says. The classes and devotion paid off, as did her involvement with the Village Gallery of Arts in Cedar Mill, a nonprofit cooperative art gallery with a strong, supportive membership community. Elizabeth is now a teaching artist herself, nurturing artists of all ages along their paths of selfexpression and creative discovery - reciprocating the encour-

agement that she received along her own journey. “Teaching always inspires me,” she says, “because it validates the joy that comes from creating. When I see my students happily painting, I am reminded of the happiness it brings me, and I am inspired to keep making art important in the lives of our youth.” With her youngest students, Higgins is “constantly amazed by their ability to create unfettered by judgment or thoughts of what makes art good or right.” Higgins leads by example in her organic, fluid process of inspiration. She is constantly inspired by shape and color, and finds purpose in expressing herself through the bold use of watercolor pigments. Painting is playful and joyful for her, and these are the feelings she hopes to instill in others.

Raised in Virginia, Elizabeth has lived in the Portland area since 1995. She teaches children and adult art classes for various cultural organizations, and is a juried member of Watercolor Society of Oregon. Her art is available for purchase on-line and at Catherine Bede Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon. She has been a member of Village Gallery of Arts since 2011, serving on the Board of Directors as Publicity Chair in 20132014. She paints regularly at her studio at East Creative Collective in SE Portland, just a few blocks away from OMSI. After a four-month selection process, artist Blessing Hancock was selected to create artwork for the new Beaverton Public Safety Center. This was a unanimous decision between the selection committee and the Beaverton Arts Commission. Hancock currently resides in Olympia, Wash., and owns Skyrim Studio Inc., which focuses on site-specific sculptures. She utilizes her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in Landscape Architecture degrees to create innovative work for public spaces.

Public Safety Center Groundbreaking

Hancock’s artwork can be seen in locations throughout the country, including San Antonio, Texas, West Palm Beach, Fla., and outside the Shute Park Library building in Hillsboro By using standard materials in unexpected ways, she creates one-of-kind experiences for her clients. She finds inspiration

in day-to-day encounters and is drawn to art as a tool for innovation and new experiences. Through the inclusion of interactive opportunities to engage and participate with the artwork through touch, sound and movement, her concepts push the boundaries of the public experience. Light is a connective thread that runs through her work, and she believes in light’s ability to enliven a space. Community engagement is an essential component of her work, and she has extensive experience working with community groups. A skilled teacher, she has a love of fostering talent in others. She has worked as a private art instructor, and enjoys involving interested parties of all ages in her work. Engagement is tailored to the project and each piece in her portfolio is an original, site-specific work that was ’born of place’ and speaks of the surrounding people and culture. For more information about her work, visit www. blessinghancock.com.

New Fair Complex Event Center

Construction Begins COMMUNITY Site work has begun on the city’s first dedicated building for our police and emergency management operations. Nearly 200 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony held Sep. 17 to mark the occasion and celebrate the beginning of construction at the site at the corner of Southwest Hall Boulevard and Southwest Allen Boulevard. Remarks were provided by Mayor Denny Doyle, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, Chief Jim Monger, project and community partners, as well as a handful of honored guests who shared special well-wishes for the facility. Chief Jim Monger wished residents and visitors in Beaverton continue to not only feel safe and welcomed in the city,

but also within the new building. “This is a momentous day and a long time in the making,” said Mayor Denny Doyle. “It’s really heartwarming to see the community come together.” During the event, participants visited building models and toured the facility using virtual reality equipment. A Welcoming Week activity featuring an opportunity for attendees to share their own hopes for the building, as well as visual representation of art created by the artist who will design site-specific artwork for the building were on display.

COMMUNITY Officials from the City of Hillsboro, Washington County Visitors Association and other partnering organizations broke ground today at the site for a future Event Center on the grounds of the Washington County Fair Complex. The 89,000-squarefoot facility, proposed as a key feature and

centerpiece of a revitalized Fair Complex, is designed to accommodate the needs of a wide range of community activities. While continuing to support and enhance the annual Washington County Fair in Hillsboro, the Event Center is intended to provide year-round opportunities to host visitors from across the region for large community gatherings.

New Fair Complex Event Center Rendering

The groundbreaking event happened in coordination with Welcoming Week activities to further demonstrate our commitment to a safe and welcoming city for all. The public safety center is anticipated to open in spring 2020.

THE STORY: In this holiday original, we are invited into the 1970’s living room of the Hart family to watch some television on Christmas Eve. Every time the family turns the channel we get to see a new scene from the classic Christmas television and movies we remember so fondly. Set in a time when most families had just one tv in the house and only a small handful of channels to choose from, the arrival of the holiday TV guide meant that the season was in full swing. Families would gather together to watch the Grinch’s heart grow 3 sizes, George Bailey realize that he’s the richest man in Bedford Falls or Linus explain the true meaning of Christmas. Holly Jolly is a heaping helping of Christmas cheer decked out with singing, dancing and some very special guest appearances you won’t want to miss..

THE STORY: The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. When she starts work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, Henrietta isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the starts for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love.
