George Deibert (Age 59) and his dog Porter had mixed feelings when their park was replaced by solar panels. But now he sees the harnessing of the sun and water as “something beautiful“... and poetic!

BRG History: The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals: Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. This publication is our way of highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

February 8, 1913

Where can I buy a Valentine’s Day gift?

The Bank of Beaverton (now ow the Arthur Murray Dance Studio on Watson), is in the news. It was owned locally and now it’s w owned by a man from Texas!

Beaverton’s Commercial Club is like our current day Chamber of Commerce and then, like now, they hope to keep the city beautiful. www.BeavertonResourceGuide.com

Trained employeesSave savea Patron a patron’s after heart attack at AC Trained Employees Afterlife Heart Attack at AC by Bill Evans By Bill Evans

“It happened very swiftly. I began to get light-headed. I knew I was in trouble, said retired Portland deputy police chief Rob Aichele, recounting the last details he remembers before suffering a heart attack at the Tualatin Hills Athletic Center on Nov. 5. “I made a move for the railing (of the indoor track) and didn’t make it. The next thing I remember, I was waking up in the ER. Aichele may not recall what came next, but the THPRD employees who saved his life won’t soon forget.

The front desk notiÂżed Center Supervisor Julie Rocha, who summoned Program Coordinator Emily Kent; the two quickly grabbed a deÂżbrillator and Âżrst aid kit to assist.

Just how good? Only 12 days after his heart attack, Aichele showed up for a morning stroll around the indoor track. “Rob walked up, gave me a big hug and said, ‘Thank you is never going to be enough for what you did for me and my family’, Horton recalled.

When Rocha and Kent arrived at Aichele’s side, he was unresponsive. “His Âżngertips were blue, his legs were starting to turn blue,â€? said Rocha. “I ripped up his shirt as Emily opened the AED, we padded him up,â€? she added. “The analyzer said to shock him right away. We did that, I started compression. Emily gave him one breath, and as she went to give him a second breath, he started gasping.â€?

George Horton, a maintenance technician at the AC, was among the ¿rst to arrive at Aichele’s side. He came running after patron Valerie Mustonen discovered Aichele and yelled for help.

As Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue EMTs entered the building moments later, the deÂżbrillator recommended a second shock.

“When I got there, he was purple, Horton said.

“They said to go ahead, and we shocked him again, Rocha said.

feel really good.

“He was dead, Rocha said. “Two weeks later, he’s walking around the track again. It’s amazing. Rob Aichele (second from left) gathers with three Athletic Center employees on the same indoor track where he suffered a heart attack on Nov. 5. The employees – from left, Emily Kent, Julie Rocha and George Horton – used CPR and the center’s AED unit to resuscitate Aichele.

The rescue crew intervened at that point. Aichele was driven to Providence St. Vincent Hospital where, miraculously, he reached a full mental recovery in about 8-10 hours.

In a matter of minutes, it was over. “I stepped outside and thought, ‘That really happened’, said Horton, who lost his mom to a heart attack. “I’m happy that I was there for someone. It makes me Volume 6–Issue 2 (February 2016) | Beaverton Resource Guide – 17

A: The legal answer is that a motorist is obligated to pull to the right and stop when approached from behind by an emergency vehicle displaying lights/siren. There are very few roadways where, if people are paying attention, that cannot be accomplished. When all else fails it’s probably best to “just get out of the way and let the emergency service provider weave their way around you.

Q:

What is the purpose of unmarked patrol cars? Is it so they can hide and give out tickets easier or do they have more important roles like investigating more serious crimes?

If you have a question for the Beaverton Car Guy, email popslcf3@hotmail. com or call 503-930-1493 Larry’s specialty is locating cars, even hard to ďŹ nd cars, for everyday folk. He has been in the automotive industry for over 35 years and has several degrees in automotive technology.

The other day my girlfriend was en driving on a busy street when she heard a ďŹ re engine siren behind nd her. Cars started to pull over but she could not because other cars were e in her way. She instead sped up to bypass the crowd before pulling over justifying the move by saying she is giving the ďŹ re engine more room to get through the congestion. What should she have done?

A: Beaverton Police Department has no requirement to issue any citations in most situations. There is no quota or expectation of production for citations or arrests.

A: Our agency has only three unmarked patrol cars and they are all assigned to the trafďŹ c safety division. As a TrafďŹ c Safety OfďŹ cer, I look for and seek out aggressive driving behavior as well as distracted driving (cell phone use). Most people will spot a marked patrol car at a great distance and quit their poor driving behavior only when the police car is nearby. By operating an unmarked car I can spot violators demonstrating unsafe behavior and assist them in making better driving decisions through enforcement. If you have a trafďŹ c question that you'd like us to ask the Beaverton Police Department for this column, email us at: BRG@cedarhousemedia.com (For all other police questions, call the police non-emergency number: 503-526-2260) EH FURVV WUDLQHG DV GUXJ GHWHFWLRQ WKH GHSDUWPHQW ORRNV IRU 2IÂżFHUV ZKR UHTXLUH D PLQLPXP DPRXQW GRJV 7KDW GHFLVLRQ ZLOO EH PDGH RI FORVH VXSHUYLVLRQ DUH QRW SURQH DIWHU WKHLU WUDGLWLRQDO VNLOOV KDYH WR FLWL]HQ FRPSODLQWV RI H[FHVVLYH EHHQ KRQHG 7UDLQLQJ RI ERWK DQLPDOV DQG XVH RI IRUFH KDYH D QDWXUDO DELOLW\ WR DVVRFLDWH DQG FRPPXQLFDWH ZLWK WUDLQHUV ZLOO FRQWLQXH WKURXJK PLG DQLPDOV DQG ZKR KDYH IDPLO\ VXS- 0DUFK SRUW DQG XQGHUVWDQGLQJ 3XEOLVKHG JXLGHOLQHV DOVR LQFOXGH WKH QHHG OfďŹ cers Lutu WR KLUH SHRSOH ZKR DUH SHUVRQand Toa DEOH DQG FRPIRUWDEOH DGGUHVVLQJ FURZGV GHPRQVWUDWLRQV DQG KDYH YHU\ SURÂżFLHQW GULYLQJ VNLOOV $FFRUGLQJ WR %DVWLQHOOL WKH VKHSKHUGV DUH FKRVHQ IRU WKHLU GLVSRVLWLRQV SK\VLFDO DWWULEXWHV DQG SHUKDSV PRVW LPSRUWDQW WKHLU H[FHSWLRQDO ROIDFWRU\ V\VWHP ,W LV D PLVFRQFHSWLRQ WKDW WKH GRJV DUH RQO\ XVHG WR WUDFN EDG JX\V ZKR KDYH FRPPLWWHG FULPHV 7KH GRJV DUH DOVR FDSDEOH RI ORFDWLQJ HYLGHQFH DQG ÂżQGLQJ ÂłLQQRFHQW´ SHRSOH ZKR KDYH ZDQGHUHG DZD\ IURP KRPH RU VFKRRO $W WKLV WLPH LWÂśV WRR HDUO\ WR NQRZ ZKHWKHU HLWKHU DQLPDO ZLOO Volume 6–Issue 2 (February 2016) | Beaverton Resource Guide – 19

did,” Holgate says. “He wasn’t a statue or a saint, but a man who struggled as any of us does to find meaning in his life and work. His ability to transcend his limitations, evolve a vision for the country and unite the nation behind that vision is what makes him perhaps our most inspiring figure.” In addition to his theatrical experience, Holgate served as a staffer for the United States Congress and the Oregon State Senate before joining the Foreign Service in 1984. Mr. Holgate resides in Portland, Oregon.

Booked for Success Every Child Should Own a Book FUNDRAISING Believing that every child should own a book, Central Beaverton Neighborhood Association is trying to make that possible for each of William Walker Elementary School’s more than 500 students. The fourth annual Booked for Success program is aimed at raising enough money to provide each child a coupon to purchase a new book during the Scholastic Book Fair at the school Feb. 24 and 25. Walker has a diversified student body with a high level of the families living below the poverty level. It is the only school in the Beaverton district in which so many students qualify for free or reduce price lunches that the entire school is on the assistance program. Many of the families do not have books in their homes. Money for the coupons will come from a City of Beaverton matching grant and the Neighborhood Association’s fund raising activities: collection jars at five locations, sale of donated tickets to Beaverton Civic Theater productions, direct donations,

unveiled “Inevitability (shown above) is a fascinating expression of romantic concepts, casting temptation, seduction, and surrender as pivotal universal elements of the journey of romance. This work highlights Gretchen’s exceptional ability for merging realistic and fantastical imagery to create mood and emotion in her artwork. And “Inevitability incorporates Gretchen’s signature painting and collage techniques that render 3-D visual effects in her work.

About the Author Jeannie Burt was raised on a farm in Oregon. There were six, counting her, in her high school graduating class. She was related to half of them, a situation that fostered neither romance, nor privacy or adventure, but it did tend to keep her in line. Her ďŹ rst home after college (an apartment off Canyon Rd), was in Beaverton. Beaverton’s friendly atmosphere carved a wonderful lead into adulthood.

She often shops in some of the the old neighborhoods she shopped at back then. Her career in business and human resources later allowed her to live in San Francisco, New York and Milano where she became passionate about art. She adores Paris and visits often.

Reviews “A Minor Literary Masterpiece A deftly written novel showcasing the quiet struggle of a farmer and his family within the framework of a deftly written mystery. A minor literary masterpiece, author Jeannie Burt is a remarkably gifted writer and When Patty Went Away is highly recommended for personal summer fun reading lists.â€? (--The Midwest Book Review) “Jeannie Burt brings to her novel a bone-deep understanding of and compassion for the lives of working farm families in the American West. It s a rare enough thing, to encounter characters who are working farmers, rarer still to see them as ďŹ gures of complexity, neither clichĂŠs nor caricatures; even more astonishing, that Jack McIntyre could stand in for any one of us, as his story echoes the actualities of all our modern lives. It s a remarkably moving novel, heartbreaking and hopeful; there are scenes of great power; but what strikes me most about this novel is that it is true, and real.“ (--Molly Gloss, author of The Jump-Off Creek and The Hearts of Horses)

“In this remarkable novel, Jeannie Burt turns a keen eye to the modern West, its hard times and powerful characters. Facing weather that devastates his crops and a corrosive culture that threatens his teen-aged daughter and her best friend, Jack McIntyre, a quiet rancher must face change or lose everything he values. “Set in the dramatic landscapes of Eastern Oregon and the seamy underside of Montreal, When Patty Went Away celebrates a father’s love and responsibility while offering insight into the strength of the Western heart. Jeannie Burt’s important debut signals that another powerful voice has joined the chorus of outstanding women writing about the West. (--Craig Lesley, author of The Sky Fisherman and Winterkill).

Tues., Feb. 9 at 7 pm.This month’s book is “The Free” by Willy Vlautin. Synopsis: Severely wounded in the Iraq war, Leroy Kervin has lived in a group home for eight years. Frustrated by the simplest daily routines, he finds his existence has become unbearable. An act of desperation helps him disappear deep into his mind, into a world of romance and science fiction, danger and adventure where he is whole once again. Freddie McCall, the night man at Leroy’s group home, works two jobs yet still can’t make ends meet. He’s lost his wife and kids, and the house is next. Medical bills have buried him in debt, a situation that propels him to consider a lucrative--and dangerous-proposition. Pauline Hawkins, a nurse, cares for the sick and wounded, including Leroy. She also looks after her mentally ill elderly father. Yet she remains emotionally removed, until she meets a young runaway who touches something deep and unexpected inside her.

SYNOPSIS: Comprised of a series of brisk, kaleidoscopic scenes, the play begins as Wallace, now a handsome young man of eighteen, hurls a ripe tomato at a pretty young woman dressed all in white while declaiming ‘I love you.’ We then move back in time to when Wallace, six years of age, is sent off to school by his mother who then proceeds to slit her own throat. All of the characters, in the end, contribute to the mosaic which captures with such eloquence and wit all the fears and joys and uncertainties which mark Wallace’s progress towards manhood. 0DUN DQG +HOHQD KDYH SHUIRUPHG IRU PDQ\ \HDUV LQ WKH 1RUWKZHVW DV ZHOO DV LQ VHYHUDO (XURSHDQ FRXQWULHV (DFK EHJDQ SHUIRUPLQJ LQ WKHLU \RXWK 0DUN ZLWK KLV GDG RQ VWDJH LQ 3RUWODQG DQG +HOHQD RQ &]HFKRVORYDN 1DWLRQDO 5DGLR DQG 79 LQ 3UDJXH 7KHLU VWDJH QDPH LV Âľ*5($7+286( RI 0XVLFÂś DQG WKH\ KDYH D OLQH RI &'V &KHFN RXW WKHLU ZHEVLWH DW ZZZ JUHDWKRXVHRIPXVLF FRP 0DUN DQG +HOHQD DUH LQWHUHVWHG LQ SUHVHQWLQJ WKLV VKRZ LQ YDULRXV YHQXHV WKURXJKRXW WKH 8 6 • +HUH LV D VKRUW XQGHU PLQXWHV GHPR UHHO RI Âł<RX 'R 6SHDN (QJOLVK 'RQÂśW <RX"´ KWWSV \RXWX EH 6 &FNS9%9 , • 7KLV OLQN ZLOO WDNH \RX WR D
