The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

#3( "EWFSUJTJOH

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll ďŹ nd that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

oining scores of other public agencies in Oregon, the Northwest and U.S., the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District will become completely smoke-free starting Feb. 1, 2014. The smoking ban applies to all grounds and facilities within the district’s 50-square-mile service area, including parks, trails, parking lots and athletic ¿elds. Smoking is already prohibited inside THPRD buildings. By a 5-0 vote, the THPRD Board of Directors approved the rule change at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Dec. 9. It was the second reading of an ordinance that would establish the ban. The ¿rst reading happened at the board’s Nov. 4 meeting.

The idea of a totally smoke-free THPRD was Âżrst formally proposed to the board in September by the district’s Parks Advisory Committee, which had done extensive research on the issue. Park District staff subsequently conducted public meetings, an online survey and other communications inviting comments from residents. Opposition was minimal. “This rule change encourages healthy lifestyle choices for our residents, which is consistent with our mission,â€? said Doug Menke, THPRD general manager. “Other beneÂżts include cleaner air, less litter, and reduced Âżre risk.â€? According to the Washington County Public Health Division, THPRD is the latest in an increasingly long line of public agencies that have adopted a smoke-free or tobacco-free policy. Local and in-state examples include the City of Beaverton, Beaverton School District, Hillsboro, Lake

As a result of a board-approved rule change, smoking will be prohibited on all THPRD property, including parks such as Commonwealth Lake (pictured here). The change goes into effect Feb. 1, 2014.

Oswego, Bend, Roseburg, Sherwood and many others. “THPRD’s smoke-free policy demonstrates a commitment to children, park users, and employees to improve the health of the community, said Carla Bennett, tobacco prevention and education program coordinator for the county.

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” KJ “In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then He made school boards.” KJ “The easy confidence with which I know another man’s religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.” KJ “Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are more pliable.” KJ “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the latter often called "the Great American Novel."

The gentle reader will never, never know what a consummate ass he can become until he goes abroad. I speak now, of course, in the supposition that the gentle reader has not been abroad, and therefore is not already a consummate ass. KJ In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

Your competition comes into play as well if they offer a compelling product that competes with yours. Once you have an idea of what events or triggers are coming up in your customers’ lives, you can start to understand and reach out to them with effective messages that meet their needs, or help them in these times of transition.

By Larry Ferguson

The level of detail here is completely dependent on your data. For example, if you know if your customers are expecting children, you might be able to start a conversation on a new vehicle to better accommodate. If you know they take a regular vacation every year, it might be a good time to bring them in for maintenance before the trip. Once started on this exercise our clients have no trouble creating message points that would be relevant to triggers in their customers lives. The key is to identify the triggers, create a plan, and execute it. The execution could come in the form of emails, phone calls, direct mail, or social media. After your plan is in action, keep records of all the events and messages you send out. We are advocates of measuring every piece of marketing to evaluate its success. Retention plans should be the same

way. Keeping a log, or updating your contact list with new triggers is a great way to stay on top of your investment in the campaign and allows you to see real results. Take special care to track referrals, as that is great way to really serve the customers that promote you. You can invest in the relationship for stronger retention and trust. For example, there is absolutely nothing better for customer retention, than continuous follow up & contact. „
