BRG History: The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals: Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. This publication is our way of highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community. BRG Advertising: With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since Jan. 2013. Not only do they want to know what's happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll ďŹ nd that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

Disclaimer:

The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the writers and do not necessarily reect the position of Cedar House Media and/or the Beaverton Resource Guide.

Remembering Beaverton 100 Years Ago Sponsored by the Beaverton Library Foundation

Excerpts from the January 13, 1914 issue of The Owl Shop local is the new year sentiment from 1914. Something the BRG believes wholeheartedly!

Heavy rains and flooded oded creeks are nothing new this time of year. Beaverton’s got a circus us but beware of the escaped cougar!

It says at the top that our city had elecectic cars for sale on Jan. 18th, 1914. Eat your heart out Chevy Volt and Nissan an Leaf! We’ve got you beat by 100 years! rs! You may have driven down Hocken en Ave. but did you know he was our mayor in 1914? www.BeavertonResourceGuide.com

True Teachers are good teachers. Find out what makes up a true teacher back in 1914.

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District: connecting people, parks and nature &KUVTKEV PCOGU RCTMU RWTEJCUGF HTQO C FGXGNQRGT by Bob Wayt By Bob Wayt

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District Board of Directors have approved the names of three new park sites – one in south Beaverton and two in the Cedar Mill area. All three were acquired from developer Polygon Northwest within the last two years. The south Beaverton park – which spans 1.2 acres and is located just east of SW Murray Boulevard at the corner of SW Weir Road, and SW Old Weir Road – has been named Steeplechase Park. Recreational amenities include play equipment, picnic areas and open lawn areas. www.BeavertonResourceGuide.com

well as recreational opportunities such as hiking and wildlife viewing.

“Steeplechaseâ€? was chosen after the district’s outreach efforts revealed strong public support for a horse-themed name, which is consistent with naming of streets in the area. Two adjacent THPRD sites, Wildhorse Park and Buckskin Park, also reĂ€ect the horse theme.

THPRD acquired the fully improved natural area from Polygon Northwest in August 2015.

THPRD, in partnership with the City of Beaverton, purchased the fully improved park from Polygon Northwest in May 2014. A one-acre neighborhood park in the Cedar Mill area, located within the Timberland development at the corner of NW 118th Avenue and NW Stone Mountain Lane, will now be known as Timberland Park. Recreational amenities include a public plaza, splash pad, play equipment and open lawn areas. THPRD acquired the fully improved park from Polygon Northwest in June 2015.

One of the major public amenities of THPRD’s newly named Cedar Mill Creek Greenway is this boardwalk that offers views of wildlife and Cedar Mill Creek Falls. It’s part of an 8.77-acre natural area that THPRD acquired from developer Polygon Northwest in August.

The third newly named site, an 8.77-acre natural area in the southeast corner of the Timberland development at NW 116th Avenue and NW Cedar Falls Drive, will be known as the Cedar Mill Creek Greenway.

THPRD conducted an extensive outreach effort, from August to November, to gather public input on potential names for the three sites. Methods included mailings, direct communications with certain neighborhood groups and community members, website postings, and signs at the three locations.

The site offers recreational trail amenities including a portion of the Cedar Mill Creek Trail that loops around the Timberland development. It also features signi¿cant natural resources and two large storm water ponds as Volume 6–Issue 1 (January 2016) | Beaverton Resource Guide – 17

With the Beaverton Police Department

Q:

I thought I recognized a car inher volved in an accident the other day. Is there a way to see police reports of trafďŹ c accidents that hapappened in the past? A: Requests for police reports of any kind, including trafďŹ c collisions, can be requested through the records division. Many, if not most, will be granted once they have been redacted and a fee has been paid. Personal information such as dates of birth, social security numbers, juvenile involvement and medical information will be removed to protect the innocent.

Q:

I was driving down Hall Bvld when I saw a woman facing to cross at 2nd street. So I stopped. But she did not move. How long do I wait for her to make a move before proceeding? A: You should stop to see if the pedestrian is going to cross per state law. If the person is not making eye contact with you or attempting to cross by stepping into the street from the curb then I would personally honk my horn and try to make eye contact and waive her on as though she is going to cross. If that doesn’t get her attention there is no law for the amount of time you have to wait only that you stopped and made an attempt to yield to the pedestrian. I would then proceed past her with caution and at a slow speed. You are not in violation if you make an attempt and the person is not paying attention.

Q:

There was a guy at a crosswalk looking to cross the street and when I started to slow down, he waved me on. Could I get a ticket for not stopping? A: If a pedestrian is waiting to cross but waives you to pass then you are not in violation. At that point he waives his right of way. I would pass in that instance unless he is standing in the roadway then I would motion for him to continue to cross while you wait. If you have a trafďŹ c question that you'd like us to ask the Beaverton Police Department for this column, email us at: BRG@cedarhousemedia.com (For all other police questions, call the police non-emergency number: 503-526-2260)

EXHIBITS Inspirations in Prose & Poetry

January Group Show Jan. 6 - 30, 2016 Art On Broadway is proud to begin the new year with an exhibit featuring the artwork of all 20 members. This “Group Show” will include works in acrylic, collage, encaustic, oil, pastel, watercolor, clay, glass, wood, and jewelry. The show will open on Wednesday, January 6, and close on Saturday, January 30. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception on Saturday, January 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. In addition, works by other local artists will be displayed on our Guest Wall during the same period. The subject of the guest show is “Solitude.” Please stop by during regular winter hours - 11 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and/ or attend the Artists Reception.

Saturday, Jan 22, 11-5p Did you ever wonder about the inspiration behind a particular work of art? Join us on January 22 as we listen to the stories behind the varied works of Gretchen Lombardo and others contributing artists. You’ll be treated to wonderful stories and poetry that illuminate the spark that drives the artists’ implements and leads to amazing paintings, collages, assemblages, and more.

Gallery Hours: Tu-Sa 11am-6pm

Be sure not to miss the heartwarming story Ms. Lombardo’s Wolf Watch. This magical painting (pictured above), was influenced by the super moons of 2015 and the true story of OR7, the lonely gray wolf who walked more than 2000 miles from Oregon to California to find a mate. From the super blue moon reflected in peaceful water, to the elegant wisteria-covered bridge, Gretchen will reveal the symbolism, emotions, and mystery brought together in this enchanting painting. Related poetry readings will be performed throughout the evening. Complementary refreshments will be served. Gretchen Lombardo’s work will be showing through winter of 2016. New artists and artwork are added to Moontalla Gallery each month.

Participants will explore essential questions: What do we think about when we think of dying? As people we’ve known have moved closer to death, what’s seemed to work well for them and the people close to them? What’s seemed difficult? When we think about our own dying, what do we want most?

SYNOPSIS: Set in a post-apocalyptic world, I Know Things deals with the emotional backlash of human genetic engineering, as a dysfunctional family struggles to advance in a highly controlled new-world order. Although this is the ďŹ rst formal collaboration between HART Theatre and Masque Alfresco, it is playwright Don Teeters’ and Masque Alfresco’s third Fertile Ground Premiere, and promises to be his most thought-provoking work to date. Be careful what you ask for! What are you willing to give up to advance or even to survive? How much can human impulses be manipulated before they snap? What has genetic ďŹ ddling done to us? – All probing questions asked by the four main characters. The response of the controlling Examiner: “Consciousness is everything. If humanity had more of it, we wouldn’t be here.â€?
