The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

#3( (PBMT

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

#3( "EWFSUJTJOH

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll ďŹ nd that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

Automotive Q&A:

With the Beaverton Car Guy

Food for Thought What and When to Eat at Your Next BBQ

Q:

Our older Honda Civic has a great amount of road noise and on long road trips it is very tiring. Is there anything I can do to help reduce the noise?

A: Yes actually there is, there are basically 2 types of rubber used to make tires, one of which is a harder rubber which transfers the road noise up into the cabin of the vehicle more aggressively than what a softer rubber tire would do.This is the easiest way to reduce the cabin noise, although it certainly is not the cheapest. The other option is to have a product known as DYNAMAT installed, it is a self-adhesive insulation material that sticks to the interior of the vehicle, and all of the interior as well as the carpet, or oor mat must be removed from the interior cabin as well as the trunk. The second method can be quite costly, as it will be very labor intensive.

Q:

I have noticed since the weather has become warmer & I am using the air conditioner, that there is an ordorless & colorless puddle of something under my vehicle. Should I be concerned with this? A: This is a normal condition when using the A/C. The air conditioning provides cold air into the cabin of the vehicle, as this happens, frost accumulates on the metal pipes exiting the dash of the vehicle. When the vehicle gets parked, the warmth from the engine, as well as the ambient temperature, will melt this frost off of the A/C pipes, therefore leaving a puddle of clear water under the vehicle. No cause for concern.

Q:

I checked my engine oil when getting fuel, and noticed that is was 2 quarts low on oil. I realized that I had not had my oil changed in 10,000 miles, my car is only one year old, is this normal? A: 4 For starters 10,000 is a lot of miles on engine oil ( unless it is full synthetic ) When the viscosity of the oil begins to breakdown, somewhere around 5,000 miles it is also becoming fuel diluted as well. Once the fuel dilution process is introduced, the oil id thinned out from the introduction of fuel, this causes the oil to burn a bit with the normal usage of the vehicle. So the more miles driven with dirty engine oil, the more engine oil is used by the engine. Zoo News is Good News

With the Beaverton Police Department

Q:

Sometimes when I park on the street I ďŹ nd myself at the very end trying to squeeze just inside the parking sign (or markers). In order to not get a ticket, can any of my car stick out past the parking sign? A. No. The design of each space is to accommodate the average sized car. When you exceed that space you are violating the letter and spirit of the parking rules. You are, however, at the mercy of the responding parking enforcement person and their discretion.

Q:

When stopped by police and the ofďŹ cer asks for proof of insurance, does it have to be a paper version or can I pull it up on my smart phone? How about the drivers license? A. Oregon state law speciďŹ cally allows motorists to use smart phones or similar devices to show proof of insurance. The same option is NOT allowed for the drivers license, you must still carry and present the “realâ€? thing.

Q:

Of course it must be okay to back up in order to parallel park into a spot but I recently saw a car on Broadway go in reverse 5 car lengths in order to get an open spot. Is there a law stating how far a car can go backwards on a street? A:The appropriate ORS is 811.480 Illegal backing and penalty. A person commits the offense of illegal backing if the person backs a vehicle the person is driving when it is not safe to do so or when it causes interference with other trafďŹ c upon a highway. (No distance is noted)

Q:

Can a person park in front of a ďŹ re hydrant if the curb is not painted red or yellow?

A: (No) Oregon Revised Statute 811.550, It is illegal for a person to park, stop or leave standing a vehicle within 10 feet of a ďŹ re hydrant.

If you have a trafďŹ c question that you'd like us to ask the Beaverton Police Department for this column, email us at: BRG@cedarhousemedia.com (For all other police questions, call the police non-emergency number: 503-526-2260)

30 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 4–Issue 7 (July 2014)

Synopsis: Crazy Old Man is an original musical that puts the ofttold story of Noah’s ark into a unique and captivating new framework. The essential plot elements are all there, but in this telling it is the individual characters, rather than the storm, that bring the story to life. No wooden saint, Noah is portrayed as just, fair, and ethical. His wife, children, friends and neighbors are regular folks, not cardboard Biblical caricatures. Most distinctive is the portrayal of evil, personified by Dr. Pain and Irwin and their despicable colleagues. Gambling, drunkenness, lechery, sloth, greed – these and a host of other alluring sins engulf the simple folk of Sharrupak when their annual town fair is overtaken by Dr. Pain’s vile and gaudy crew. While the show is often lighthearted, it explores serious themes like love, loyalty, friendship, heartbreak, and despair as well as hope, faith and trust. The audience is carried along on this journey with a variety of musical styles including classic ballads and fast-talking vaudeville numbers, with hints of blues and jazz. The show closes with a good old-fashioned hand-clapping spiritual that will have the audience humming as they leave the theater! Find us on Facebook or visit - - - > www.beavertonresourceguide.com

Synopsis: A sparkling homage to a bygone era, The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef! His plans are foiled when he falls for spirited Marian (the librarian), who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Attention parents of creative pre-teens: I urge you to encourage your daughters and sons to submit their poems to be considered for publication in Beaverton Kids Corner. This is a wonderful way to spotlight student creativity!" Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita

Dancing in the Dark I awake from my restless sleep, slip my feet out from under the covers and set my feet on the cold wooden oor.

I tiptoe across the room to the door and open it. I slip out into the silent hallway. All I can hear is the ticking of the clock. I slowly creep down the hall and end up in front of the backdoor. I slowly open it. I step out onto the back porch. I hear the sounds of the city. I feel the night air around me. I twirl on my toes.

I dance through the dark. W When I ďŹ nally slip back inside and into my bed the sun is just peaking over the horizon. I fall asleep thinking . . . .

I love the night...
