Note from the Editor Hi… and thanks for picking up a copy of the Beaverton Business Directory & Shopping Guide. As Beaverton’s first and only community newspaper, I invite you to look through the guide, take it home and use it as a resource to patron our local small businesses. Inside you’ll find useful shopping maps (to help you explore and discover), short and concise business listings (to help you quickly learn about your neighborhood’s goods and services), traditional advertisements and stories about local non-profits (the heart and soul of our city). In short, this newspaper is designed for Beaverton residents by Beaverton residents to help local businesses gain new customers and thrive. We, at Cedar House Media, are doing our part by publishing this directory and we encourage you to do yours by visiting a new local business… even if it’s just to say “Hi!”

The Beaverton Community Vision Project

Mark Fagin, Visioning Advisory Committee Chair

T

he Beaverton Community Vision project has been one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences in my life, and we’re just getting started! If you haven’t heard, or been a part of this transformative project, let me start by giving you a little background. Over the last two years the City’s 13 member Visioning Advisory Committee

has engaged more than5,000 community members. The purpose of our interaction was to ask how Beaverton can become a better community in the near and long term. We listened and recorded every shared idea. Utilizing the information we gathered, a group of 80 community leaders created 115 actionable items that we, the community of Beaverton, can work to accomplish. With the support of our Mayor and City Council, we have recruited and received commitments from over 60 organizations who are all excited to be working together to create the Beaverton we have said we want to see. The partner organizations are large and small and are a who’s who list of those working in our community. From the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce, to Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD). From the Domestic Violence Resource Center to the Oregon Department of Transportation. From the City of Beaverton to the Beaverton Lions Club. These organizations have agreed to step up and in an organized manor, work to accomplish the actions the community has deemed important.

few moments to learn more about the vision and Ņnd a way to get involved. *reat things are happening in Beaverton! I would like to thank all the members of the VAC and City staff who have worked so hard to help the Beaverton Community Vision come to life. It is an exciting time to be a member of the Beaverton Community.

The City of Beaverton started the visioning process with a desire to better understand what aspects of living and working in our City are most important. Two years later, the visioning process is inņuencing many decisions being made at City Hall and else where in our community. Some examples include the upcoming International Festival to be held this summer with THPRD as our lead partner; the investigation into utilizing Beaverton Creek as an urban amenity with the City as our lead partner, the upcoming events calendar with the Beaverton Valley Times as our lead partner. The are so many great things happening in our community and a large number of them are due to the input we received doing our outreach. I have been honored to be a part of the process of creating a new vision for the City of Beaverton. I look forward to working hard as the vision is implemented and our community is transformed. I look forward to working with our the partners on this project to create the Beaverton we envisioned. The heart of visioning is the input and feedback we get from all the citizens of Beaverton. My hope is that you will take a

o you eat a healthy diet? What is a healthy diet? Food writer Michael Pollan, author of Omnivore’s Dilemma, describes a healthy diet in seven words – Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Now of course, when he says to “eat food” he means whole foods like eggs, peaches, green beans, and Ņsh, not processed “edible food like substances”. Fortunately, here at the BFM we have no edible food like substances, only real food. So buying our locally grown, lovingly produced foods is a big step in the right direction towards healthy eating. If we are what we eat, then make it fresh and healthy – make sure that your diet includes a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. For Seniors, the topic of our Wellness Weekend this month, diet is important for reasons other than simple weight management. Those beneŅts include “increased mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, a more robust immune system, faster recuperation times, and better management of chronic health problems. As we age, eating well can also be the key to a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced”1.

Senior (70 years +) Food Pyramid recommendations2 :

Ī Whole, enriched, and fortiŅed grains and cereals such as brown rice and 100% whole wheat bread. Ī Bright-colored vegetables such as carrots and broccoli. Ī Deep-colored fruit such as berries and melon. Ī Low- and non-fat dairy products such as yogurt and low-lactose milk. Ī Dry beans and nuts, Ņsh, poultry, lean meat and eggs. Ī Liquid vegetable oils and soft spreads low in saturated and trans fat. Ī SufŅcient ņuid intake.

Don’t forget:

Ī Physical activity such as walking, house work and yard work. It is never too late to start taking care of yourself - so what’s on your grocery list this week? Here’s to a Healthy and Sustainable Community! *inger Rapport Market Master Beaverton Business Directory –

BFM New Food Vendors

The Farmer’s Market isn’t just about Ņlling up baskets to stock your refrigerator and pantry. It doesn’t take long to work up an appetite as you select beautiful fruit and vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, heirloom grains, local Ņsh and meat, and Oregon’s diverse foraged foods. Luckily, the Beaverton Farmer’s Market is wellequipped to feed you and your family as you shop and enjoy live music and the buzzing energy in the market. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome several new food vendors, including Delicious Pizza and PBJ’s.

Delicious Pizza

Delicious Pizza’s forte is exactly that. Beautiful, fresh ingredients combined with patience, care and a custom built wood Ņre oven, result in a high-quality, classically simple and tasty pizza. Owen Morehart has spent years perfecting his perfect pizza and secret sauce recipe, and he is anxious to share his love of pizza with the friendly and energetic shoppers at the Beaverton Farmer’s Market. Try a slice of the Classic - tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and diced pepperoni, or order up a pie of Owen’s signature *arlic Chicken pizza - a savory garlic, soy sauce and olive oil sauce, grilled chicken, Italian parsley, and Monterey Jack cheese.

PBJ’s

Owners Shane Chapman and Keena Tallman have been grilling up hot and gooey sandwiches for the last year at their food cart in Northwest Portland, but they’re eager to join the vendors and staff at the Beaverton Farmer’s Market and share their playful sandwiches with the community. These unique grilled sandwiches are made with housemade nut butters, local and organic ingredients, and preservative-free breads. Try The Joy- challah bread, PBJ’s dark chocolate spread, PBJ’s coconut Ņlling and PBJ’s almond butter, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, order up a Spicy Thaichallah bread, orange marmalade, sriracha, fresh basil, curry, and PBJ’s peanut butter.

Flowers in Bloom for Opening Day!

N & M Nursery

Beaverton Farmer’s Market Sean & Rosie Sullivan Hubbard, OR

The collective sigh of not-so-wonderful weather has taken hold for many Oregonians, and it’s caused a slow start to the season for many farmers and nursery vendors. But despite the endless days of rain and gray, Beaverton Farmer’s Market nursery vendors are working hard to produce a ņourishing booth at the market. As buds and blooms slowly emerge, Rosie and Sean Sullivan of N & M Herb Nursery are busy designing and preparing hanging baskets, herb pots, mixed pots, herbs, and perennials to arrive at the

market with over 200 different plant varieties. They frequently experiment with new plants and this year they’ll debut the 3 varieties of Black Petunia, a Palm Leaf Begonia. The Sullivans can’t wait to be back at the market, chatting with all their old friends and customers, and reconnecting with the community and families as they grow each season. This will be their 19th year at the market, and they feel honored to have been a part of weddings, birthdays, holidays, and all the special moments that call for lovely ņowers over the years. Rosie has always been a passionate home gardener, and her skill and devotion to her craft is evident in her successful

ven though icy wind and Ņts of rain keep us running for cover, the hope of Spring seems to hang in the air as the market season inches closer. The gray days may be wearing us down, but Vicki Hertel and her family at Sun *old Farms have been hard at work to help us usher in a lush, colorful, and successful spring planting season. They’re looking forward to their friendly customers at the Beaverton Farmer’s Market and helping you Ņnd the best plants, starts, and ņowers for your home and garden. You won’t head home unprepared, a family member is available at every market to give you all the planting and gardening advice you could ask for. Vicki and her husband, children and grandchildren are busy in the greenhouses and Ņelds transplanting herb cuttings and starting hanging baskets. She’s happy to report the early vegetable seedlings – peas, lettuce, cabbage, cauliņower, broccoli, sweet peas and spinach – are looking great! This season they’ll have an abundance of premium ņower baskets, hanging tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries. There will also be over 35 varieties of tomato starts, pepper, squash, and cucumber starts, annual and perennial herb starts, and a few miscellaneous annual ņower starts and fruit trees. And don’t miss the debut

business. N & M promises a unique variety along with remarkable quality, and you can spot Rosie at the market every weekend with a generous smile, ready to help you make the perfect selection.

of hanging ever-bearing strawberry planters, asparagus plants, hanging cucumbers, and new varieties of blueberry bushes! Vicki’s favorite plant to grow is the tomato. They grow over 10,000 plants each season and 1500 go into their own Ņeld. As she explains, “From seed to harvest, the tomato plant is amazingly strong and, of course, amazingly healthful.” The family’s care and devotion to their Ņelds have paid off. They are well-known among market-goers for providing strong and healthy plants. They grow without any added heat or growth inhibitors and produce starts that are hardened and ready for the outdoors. For gardeners preparing for planting season, Vicki recommends staying off the plot while it is wet and rainy because compacted soil takes years to correct. And if you haven’t already, spread 6 inches of composted mulch over the garden bed. This practice should be done in the fall every year. Sun *old also attends Portland Farmer’s Market on Saturday and Wednesday, King Market, Hillsdale Market, and Hillsboro Market in Tanasbourne. They continue the full market season with vegetables and fruits and have a bountiful CSA available. Find more information at www. sungoldfarm.com

The idea was to create a community for their children, a place to take a variety of classes, such as Science, Math, or Language Arts. Over the past nine years, Village Home has become much more than a community for children. It has become the home away from home for learners, but also for their parents, who found just the support a family needs when they choose the homeschool path. Passionate teachers facilitate classes of no more than 15 students, and offer an academic alternative to mainstream education. Parents are always welcome and sometimes required in the classroom, and many make use of the opportunity to be a vital part in their children’s classes. In addition to paid classes, Village Home offers a wide variety of free member activities (for members only), for children and for parents. And so it is no surprise,

that on any given day, you’ll hear rock music Ņlling the building from one classroom, while the humming of sewing machines buzzes from across the hall. As Village Home has grown to almost 400 learners, a second campus in Northeast Portland has been added. Teens have the opportunity to get credits for certain classes, and portfolio classes have been added for all ages. Tutoring services are also available for all those, who want or need a little extra help to support their homeschooling efforts. Members also have the opportunity to join their friends for many Ņeld trips and workshops, put on by Village Home volunteers and staff. But the greatest highlight of the year is most certainly the annual camping trip in August. From just a few families in the beginning, this trip has grown to about 40 families, who spend one week at a different location each year, celebrating this wonderful community with campŅres, Ņeld trips, and activities throughout the day. It takes a village to raise a child, and Village Home, with its members coming from all walks of life, is just the kind of place you’re looking for.

Please visit our website at www. villagehome.org for our class catalog, and important event dates. You may call us at 503-597-9100.
