The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll ďŹ nd that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

HPRD has reopened the Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area following a major renovation that yielded more than a half-mile of paved and soft-surface trails, on-site parking and other amenities to make the site more accessible to neighbors, trail users and nature enthusiasts. Funded by THPRD’s 2008 voterapproved bond measure, the project was designed to achieve a balance between resource protection and a reasonable level of public access to the 28-acre site off SW Hart Road in Beaverton. THPRD’s Board of Directors approved a variance in district trails standards to allow paved trails that are six feet wide (instead of the usual eight). “Lowami provides a wide variety of natural resources and recreational
opportunities,â€? said project manager Matt Kilmartin of THPRD. “It is heavily forested with lots of steep topography, and South Johnson Creek runs through it. As park visitors walk the trails, they are able to experience various forested upland and wetland habitats.â€? The site is composed of Local resident Jordy Lyden walks with his children on the two lots purchased by new community trail at Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area THPRD in the midin south Beaverton. Lyden, a science teacher at Highland Park Middle School, was so impressed he plans to return on 1990s. Before that, a Âżeld trip with his 8th grade students. Camp Fire operated a day camp (Camp observing the environment. Tualatin Lowami) there from 1956 to 1994. Groups can sit on natural southeast end of the park, accessible logs and listen to park rangers while via Hart Road.
As visitors follow the trail into the site, they descend toward South Johnson Creek and the former Camp Lowami area. “As you make your way down the trail, the road noise from Hart Road disappears,â€? Kilmartin said. “You hear birds and water, and soon you’re completely immersed in forest understory with tall Âżr trees overhead.â€? The trail also features a new bridge over a tributary to South Johnson Creek. From the Johnson Creek Trail, visitors can also access the Madrone Loop Trail within the northern portion of the park, a quarter-mile, soft-surface trail that offers even more viewing opportunities.
Beaverton-area paramedics deliver babies in snowstorm By FOX 12 Staff

eaverton-area paramedics who delivered babies in the back of ambulances in the middle of the big February snowstorm all agreed on one thing: Always trust the mother. “When the patient’s stating the baby is coming, that’s when you realize, ‘OK, this is happening now,’ said Metro West Ambulance paramedic Kyle LaClair. LaClair, along with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters Kraig Moisan and Jesse Fitzpatrick, delivered a healthy baby boy in the back of an ambulance on Highway 217 as they headed toward the hospital. Due to the snowstorm and icy roads, the chained-up ambulance could only go 25 mph. The baby wasn’t willing to wait that long.
“I didn’t really think about it much as it was happening, he said, “but after it was all said and done, I was just like, ‘wow, did that really happen?’ Just 24 hours later, paramedics with Metro West again teamed up with firefighters from TVF&R to bring another baby into the world in the back of an ambulance. A couple called 911 at 2 a.m. on a Saturday from a grocery store parking lot at Southwest 185th and Farmington Road. The expectant mother knew she did not have enough time to make it to the hospital. She said the baby
was coming, and, once again, the emergency workers knew they had to act fast. “We’ve always been taught whenever we hear that, to trust her, said Nick Glass with Metro West Ambulance. Glass and firefighter Kevin Bebb told Fox 12 that they did their best for the parents and the baby, even though this was the first childbirth on the job for both of them. “They had their plan and talked to their doctors, Bebb said about the parents, “and then they got us. The father-to-be was following behind on the way to the hospital when the ambulance pulled over at the corner of Southwest Hall Boulevard and Canyon Road at 2:35 a.m. Glass and Bebb said they welcomed the man into the back of the ambulance to meet his new happy

Happy Spring everyone! am so thankful for the wonderful water we are blessed with as our neighbors in California are not quite so fortunate. Here in Aloha we are served by the Tualatin Valley Water District. (www.tvwd. org) They do an excellent job of providing quality water resources for our 49,000 citizens along with an additional 151,000 others in Washington County. They have a 5 member board and 125 paid staff. Mark Knudson is the recently named CEO of TVWD and is on the job to make sure that current and future residents have the water they need. I mention water, because I think we take it for granted. Nice, clean water delivered to our homes DQG RIÂżFHV -XVW WXUQ RQ WKH WDS and there it is. How wonderful. Many parts of the world do not have this “luxuryâ€? and we should be mindful of our use and perhaps careless overuse of our easy to get water supply. As we continue to attract more residents to our community, they will be added to our increasing use of this precious resource. So, for everyone to have “enoughâ€? in the future, let’s do our part to conserve and respect what we have today!

rutted footpath once followed a creek through the Tualatin Valley, guiding generations of native peoples on migrations between the falls of the Willamette River and the Oregon Coast. In 1847, immigrant Augustus Fanno followed this path. Finding rich soils along the unnamed creek, Fanno claimed the land. Later, railroad builders chose this timetested route for a new kind of transportation corridor. By the 1970s, much of the rail line went unused – but the ancient pathway was not forgotten by the generations that followed. A vision was born: a 15-mile walking and biking greenway to connect Portland to the cities on its southwestern ÀDQNV 7RGD\ WKH )DQQR Creek Trail, despite some remaining gaps, does exactly that. Creating it has been OLNH DVVHPEOLQJ D ¿YH FLW\ MLJVDZ puzzle. "The Fanno Creek Trail is much greater than the sum of its parts," says Kathleen Brennan-Hunter, Metro's Natural Areas Program director. "So many different organizations and agencies have brought pieces of it to the table." The plan started in 1975: a trail from the Willamette River in Portland to Fanno Creek's FRQÀXHQFH ZLWK WKH 7XDODWLQ 5LYHU in Tualatin. During the next quarter century, major sections were built in Beaverton and Tigard. Besides running across or near land owned by scores of public and private interests, the trail passes through ¿YH FLWLHV WZR FRXQWLHV DQG PDQ\ neighborhoods, across busy roads, DQG DORQJ D ÀRRGSODLQ YLWDO WR WKH health of wildlife and water quality. Since 1995, Metro has taken the lead in trail planning, land purchases and procurement of easements, using funds from two voter-approved bond measures. The cities of Beaverton, Durham, Portland, Tigard and Tualatin have secured permitting and funding, and designed and built trail segments; Clean Water Services has planted thousands of trees and UHVWRUHG VHFWLRQV RI ÀRRGSODLQ to a more natural hydrology. 2WKHU VLJQL¿FDQW SOD\HUV LQFOXGH
Washington County, Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District plus other public agencies, private landowners, neighborhood groups, conservation organizations and resident volunteers. The result: a trail used by an increasing number of commuters and recreational walkers and bicyclists. 2QH -XO\ PRUQLQJ 6XVDQ )URVW stopped along the trail to join two fellow walkers peering into summer-shallow Fanno Creek. "I've seen eagles, herons, a white egret, coyotes and even a honeybee swarm in an old oak," she said. "I feel energized by the beauty on the trail. Every day I see something new." The greenway's beauty – its creeks, wetlands and woodlands – is as multifaceted as the wildlife and humans that pass through it.
Play, commute, connect One trail element still missing is signage, making it a bit challenging WR ¿QG VRPH WUDLO VHJPHQWV :D\ ¿QGLQJ VLJQV VFKHGXOHG WR EH installed next year along the entire trail length will help bicyclists and walkers navigate, particularly in the gaps. It may take 10 more years to build out remaining gaps in the entire 15 miles of the trail, from the Willamette River to Tualatin. Even so, the trail is already a busy regional corridor that offers places to play, a beautiful commute, and connections to downtowns, neighborhoods and shopping. As one cyclist pedaled the QHDUO\ ÀDW OHQJWK RI WKH WUDLO RQ D ZDUP -XO\ GD\ VKH GUDIWHG RII D GUDJRQÀ\ KHDUG IUHLJKW WUDLQV wailing in the distance, nodded to countless other bikers and walkers, and tasted a few early berries along the way. The Fanno Creek Trail – a regional gem created by the vision and persistence of hundreds of people over nearly 40 years – combines community involvement, urban planning and Oregon beauty. By Laura O. Foster

Renting a car is a must, unless you plan on never leaving the resort, which I can see many opting to do just that. The property grounds always had a fresh, just cleaned look and the staff, called GO's, were always making sure you had everything you needed and would make a point of chatting with you or walk beside you as we headed out to discover everything this Club Med had to offer. I would go back to this allinclusive resort in a heartbeat, this time with the rest of the family in tow. By Joyce Bates

hen I arrived at CafĂŠ Murrayhill, the General Manager, Bob Corser, who has been with the restaurant since TXLFNO\ JUHHWHG PH 7KH ÂżUVW thing he did was immediately wisp me into the kitchen to meet his head chef, Martin Virgen. Martin has been with the company for about 8 months but has quickly infused his 26 years of experience into making the menu stand out. CafĂŠ Murrayhill, tucked behind the Murray Scholls Town Center, is a quaint little cafĂŠ that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on the weekends. Part of its charm is the lake and fountain that serves as a wonderful backdrop to the restaurant. These were the three dishes Martin and his staff prepared:
'LVK CafĂŠ Murrayhill Salad (Price: $7.00 Lunch / $11.00 Dinner) You know, pretty much any restaurant can prepare a salad and throw whatever they want to make it unique in some way. Bottom line, it still has to be tasty. This bevy of mixed greens is topped with lightly candied hazelnuts, grilled pears, grapes, bleu cheese crumbles and a simple balsamic vinaigrette. The dressing is not too overwhelming and helps to muddle the sweetness of the grilled pears and grapes. The hazelnuts provide enough nutty texture while the crumbles of blue cheese give the light dish a nice bitter bite. This generously portioned salad is great to share but still enough for a hearty appetite.

Your health enables you to do anything you want - make money, be productive and energetic at work, allowing you to create lasting memories with your kids/grand kids, take vacations with friends and family and, as you get older, go toward golf courses or vacation cruises, not nursing homes. Fact is, the human ecosystem is self-healing and self-regulating, with the brain and nervous system in charge. Intelligence to regulate health and healing must occur with little to no interference as possible. According to research, the most common site for interference occurs in the spine, caused by spinal misalignments. These misaligments are actually caused by some type of trauma (most common traumatic event in most of our lives is the birth process).

n class, and even on our own, we’ve read classic literature. It’s hard to understand these stories sometimes, but when you think creative, you can often see how they connect to our own lives. While our times may be different, the ideas and characters from classic stories have sound advice even for us teenagers of 2014! Here are a few of my favorites! The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald SUMMARY: Nick Carraway’s QHLJKERU -D\ Gatsby, enjoys holding lavish parties. One night, when Nick receives an invitation to ¿QDOO\ DWWHQG RQH RI WKHVH SDUWLHV he gets pulled into a complicated drama involving Gatsby, his eccentric past and a woman named Daisy, Gatsby’s lovely cousin. The setting is the wild glamour of 1920s New York City. This story is very relevant for us teens, especially when we ourselves are in transition. are false, and we should accept that. Translated into our own lives, we should think about cliques at school. It’s very normal to form a social group of friends, and obviously we won’t be friends with everyone, but we should also be aware of labels and how to avoid them. The way a person appears to us may be extremely different to how they really are for a number of reasons. Shyness is something that many people struggle with, as well as insecurity. I suggest that we never decide to ignore someone just because they’re labeled a certain way in our mind. Who knows! Perhaps that kid you’ve always thought was strange will become your best friend. All you have to do is get to know him or her.
Siddhartha by Herman Hesse SUMMARY: Siddhartha, the son of a Brahman, goes through many hardships and lessons on his mission to gain enlightenment. From a beggar, to a rich merchant, to a humble sage, he goes through a journey both mentally and physically, all in search of peace and wisdom. This story is very deep, and if you’re interested in Buddhism or Hinduism, I suggest you give it a Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin read. Of the many lessons from this SUMMARY: book, my favorite is that sometimes Elizabeth our greatest teachers are ourselves. The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand SUMMARY: Howard Roark, a strong individual and brilliant architect, struggles to create the buildings he loves in a society that does not accept his artist vision. He refuses to compromise his own beliefs on art, and strives to create what he truly believes is architecture. This is the best lesson: be yourself, and live for yourself. Trying to understand our identities as young adults is an important part of being a teen. When society tells who you should be, that makes growing up super confusing. On top of that, if you’re afraid of showing the real you, you’re holding yourself back! Loving ZKR \RX DUH DQG ÂżJKWLQJ IRU ZKDW you believe in makes you a star. Individuals in the world make history, and we all have the power to change anything! You shouldn’t IHHO SUHVVXUHG WR ÂżW DQ LPDJH MXVW do what comes naturally. Let’s put all of these lessons together in our own lives and interpretations. Even though classic stories came from before our time (and let’s be honest: they aren’t easy to read), they’re still relevant to our lives. If you’ve haven’t read them yet, head over to the Beaverton City Library and check ‘em out!
