Hi… and thanks for picking up a copy of the Beaverton Business Directory & Shopping Guide. As Beaverton’s first and only community newspaper, I invite you to look through the guide, take it home and use it as a resource to patron our local small businesses. Inside you’ll find useful shopping maps (to help you explore and discover), short and concise business listings (to help you quickly learn about your neighborhood’s goods and services), traditional advertisements and stories about local non-profits (the heart and soul of our city). In short, this newspaper is designed for Beaverton residents by Beaverton residents to help local businesses gain new customers and thrive. We, at Cedar House Media, are doing our part by publishing this directory and we encourage you to do yours by visiting a new local business… even if it’s just to say “Hi!”

he Arc of Washington County was founded in 1959. At a time when educational opportunities were not offered to children with developmental disabilities, a dedicated group of parents came together and began a cooperative playschool known as the Washington County Association for Retarded Children. With the assistance of the Beaverton Kiwanis Club and a number of dedicated volunteers, a building site was purchased in 1960 and ground was broken for our facility. It was not until 1974 that students with intellectual disabilities were able to obtain an education in public schools. During this same year, our name was changed to the Association for Retarded Citizens, which later became The Arc, representing a dedication to the improvement of the lives of all disabled citizens. Today, The Arc of Washington County is the only ARC of its kind in the state of Oregon providing services to over 100 families every year through a variety of on-site day programs. Help Everyone Receive Equality (H.E.R.E.) participants spend 3 days each week in the community volunteering with other nonproĹ…t organi-

zations. The group recently started working at the Oregon Food Bank facility in Beaverton to assist with repackaging bulk food items. In one day the group helped to pack2,886 pounds of peas and enough food to provide 2,220 meals for people in need. In addition to Oregon Food Bank, we participate in volunteer activities at Schoolhouse Supplies, Cedar Mill Library and have delivered meals for Loaves and Fishes. Our Adult Recreational Opportunities (ARO) program is designed to provide a safe and enriching environment for those over 21 years old. Each week participants enjoy being involved in the community and visiting places such as Washington Square, Beaverton City Library, Cold Stone Creamery, the swimming pool, and more. The Community Activity Program (CAP) is for young adults ages 18-21. CAP offers community activities weekly, as well as programs in the facility, including arts and crafts, outdoor sports, games, music, movies and a variety of social skills building events. Our After School Center (ASC) provides a safe and nurturing environment for children ages 4 through 17.

Is Your Business Card Important?

Children learn through social skill building activities, as well as enjoy playing games and creating crafts with their peers. In the past we have been able to offer activities such as a summer camp and Parents Night Out. We hope to bring back these popular activities to the families we serve in Beaverton and the surrounding areas. While we receive some funding from state and county sources, we rely on the generous support of our community to continue to provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities. The Arc of Washington County also works in cooperation with a variety of agencies and school districts, such as the Beaverton School District, to ensure that all caregivers for Arc participants are meeting the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. We are always seeking volunteers for special projects or to come in and spend time reading, playing music, or leading arts and crafts projects. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Cathy Schaefer, Executive Director at 503.649.6110.

May 21 – Animal Welfare Day By Ginger Rapport

Pine Mountain Ranch

isit with the many organizations that support our animal community. Ask Dr. Husband, our resident veterinarian, questions about animal health. Find out how the Humane Society of the United States is working on behalf of all animals, everywhere! Do you know a dog that lives on a chain – tell the folks from Fences for Fido. Meet a few furry representatives of the Oregon Ferret Shelter. Did you know the Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals saves, then Ņnds forever homes for animals that were scheduled to be euthanized in other shelters? Meet the doggie ambassadors from the Oregon Humane Society. Grab a sample of natural dog treats from one of our vendors, I Love My Dog! Uncover the secrets of managing feral cats and meet some of the City of Beaverton’s canine police ofŅcers.

List of participants: Oregon Ferret Shelter OFS is a non-proŅt shelter, established in 1985. In 2010 alone, they took in 458 abandoned and surrendered ferrets. They adopted approximately 300 to forever homes. The goal of the Oregon Ferret Shelter is to care for all homeless ferrets until a new permanent loving home is found. We are a 100 percent no-kill shelter--no ferrets will ever be euthanized due to lack of room. The Humane Society of the United States HSUS celebrates the protection of all animals and confronts all forms of cruelty. While we are the nation’s largest provider of hands-on services for animals, our most important goal is to prevent cruelty – before animals are homeless or made to suffer. We are the leading organization taking on animal Ņghting, puppy mills, seal killing, wildlife cruelty, and factory

farming and inhumane slaughter. HSUS was named in 2009 as one of Worth Magazines’ top 10 most Ņscally responsible charities. Fences for Fido Fences For Fido is an all volunteer 501(c) (3) nonproŅt that transforms the lives of dogs living on chains by building fences, freeing them from living a lonely, isolated life far from those they love. This concept has touched the heart of Oregonians as they see Ņrst-hand the tangible difference one fence can make for one dog. It is more than just a fence; it is life changing for the entire family. In fact, FFF was awarded 2009 Newsmaker of the Year by KGWTV & Royal Rosarians for our work in the community. I love my Dog I Love My Dog is a small home-based dog treat bakery business in Portland, Oregon. We are committed to your pet’s health by providing your dog with all natural dog treats with no added preservatives or colors Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (FCCO) FCCO provides donation-based spay/neuter clinics where caregivers feeding feral cats trap them, bring the cats to a clinic, and return them to where they are being fed with a commitment to feed them on a permanent basis. Trap-neuter-return programs like ours are effective at humanely reducing feral cat populations. Since our inception in 1995, we have spayed/neutered more than 47,000 cats and will help close to 6,000 this year alone. We are supported solely through donations. electing and consuming meat is a very complex issue constantly debated in conversations about health, politics, ethics, and sustainability. But Beaverton Farmer’s Market shoppers can rest at ease, meat vendors are held to very high standards and purchasing meat from local farmers at the market offers a more unique experience than any supermarket meat counter in town. Guaranteed fresh, local, and healthy, a meat purchase at the farmer’s market includes the good feeling of directly supporting a rancher and interacting with the people that grow your food. Pine Mountain Ranch is one vendor with an array of meats that is sure to keep your taste buds excited all year. Their plethora of items available on opening day will include: heritage pastured chicken and turkeys, buffalo, yak, beef, lamb, heritage pork, a variety of sausages, fresh eggs, duck eggs, and possibly turkey eggs! They will also debut their ranch raised deer, as standard venison cuts and as jerky. As ranch raised deer, the product will be more consistent and mild in ņavor than deer from the wild. Pine Mountain Ranch is anxious to chat with return customers and excited to meet new visitors as awareness and interest in humanely grown, pastured meats increases every day. Their product is not typically available for purchase at the gro-

cery store and they love interacting with people who are passionate about changing their eating habits and the folks who are curious to learn more. Their buffalo, yak, elk, and venison all contribute to a healthier diet that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and low in fat and cholesterol, an excellent substitute for beef! Alan and Loretta at Pine Mountain Ranch do nearly all the work themselves, with the help of one seasonal worker and their daughters. They love raising their majestic and intelligent buffalo, but their favorite babies are the yaks, they even raise some as pets. They promise to provide customers with the highest quality meat they can buy. And since they raise their meat in Central Oregon, a region known for outstanding hay and grass, they believe their grass-fed animals are remarkably ņavorful as well. Pine Mountain also processes their own poultry, including ducks, guineas, turkeys, quails, rabbit and chicken on the ranch in their own facility, and they never use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. The Pine Mountain philosophy is to grow in accordance with nature while nourishing the land, rather than hurrying the process along, and they thank every animal for its sacriŅce in sustaining the community. Alan, Loretta, and their daughters look forward to sharing their enthusiasm with you at the 2011 market!

n Sunday April 17, 2005 the Ĺ…rst hot meals program began in Beaverton. Some people refer to such a project as a “soup kitchenâ€? but the menus we plan and the atmosphere of a friendly, welcoming, family-oriented site required a new designation. We began by organizing as a restaurant-style, as opposed to a cafeteria-style, so our guests would be served instead of having to wait in another line. Volunteers are requested to sit and eat with the guests at their table leading to interesting conversations and the forming of many friendships. On Sunday April 17th Faith CafĂŠ celebrated the completion of six continuous years of serving free, hot, nutritious dinners every Sunday evening at Beaverton First United Methodist Church. A beef stroganoff dinner was on the menu and the party atmosphere was accented with balloons, ice cream sundaes and door prizes. During the past six years, increased community need has lead to multiple expansions, including dinners on the last Thursday of the month and Saturday lunches at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Other additions include 24 feet of tables containing donated food from local retailers for our guests to take

home. Most Sundays there is also clothing available for our guests to choose from and school supplies are given out to students in September. Currently ten local church groups organize the 500-

plus volunteers into working teams. An estimated 40,000 meals have been served during the past six years and over 150 meals are currently served every week to

he Beaverton Library Foundation is proud to support one of the busiest library facilities in the state. Serving the greater Beaverton area of approximately 136,000 residents, nearly 70,000 people visit the Library to check out over 2.7 million items every year. To meet this growing need, the city opened the Murray Scholls Branch in June of 2010. The mission of the Foundation is to sponsor Library programs and services that encourage literacy and cultural appreciation. This means supporting traditional print materials including best sellers, Books on CD, music CDs, DVD collections, foreign language materials, and much more. In the service and programs area, the Foundation sponsors poetry, essay and art contests, the Summer Reading Program, early literacy and speakers to name a few. We also put together a fundraising dinner and bookmark sponsor program.

Support the Library by Marketing your Business Let the community know your business supports the library while getting your business advertised on 5000 library bookmarks! The Beaverton Library Foundation is looking for sponsors for our ‘Kids Love Bookmarks’ program. This program is designed to bring in funds to help support the wonderful children’s programs offered at the library each year. As a valued sponsor, your logo along with a few business details will be printed on the back of 5000 bookmarks and distributed at the library to kids and parents. There are 4 sponsor spots per bookmark at a donation of $150 per spot (multiple spots may be taken to combine into a larger advertisement). For more information or to support the library by sponsoring a bookmark, please email: libraryfoundation@ beavertonoregon.gov

anyone who arrives hungry for food or friendship. As the seventh year begins, Faith CafĂŠ will concentrate on informing guests about additional local community services using a power point presentation funded by a grant from OnPoint Credit Union. Guests will be kept up to date on any medical, dental, pet care or employment services, to name just a few. One of the services we are now able to provide is online food stamp (SNAP) applications at the Sunday dinner site. As the summer approaches, watch for Ĺ…ve Faith CafĂŠ Saturday Summer Lunch sites to begin operation at local Beaverton elementary school. Barnes, Beaver Acres, Kinnamon, McKinley, and Vose elementary schools will provide sites that will be easily accessible to families who would like to participate in this program. A very generous grant from Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon will make it possible for both children and accompanying adults to enjoy a summer lunch and some added activities. For further information, please call Arnie Leppert at (503)-291-1539 or visit the Faith CafĂŠ website at www.faithcafeor.org
