Chief's Message /PWFNCFS

Last month's cover art by Lana Nelson

T

he Beaverton Police Department’s Volunteer Program was created to form a working partnership between citizens and the police to enhance communications and assist the Beaverton Police Department in the delivery of quality services. Our citizen volunteers are a cross-section of the community who have graduated from our Citizens Academy and work on a variety of projects including: Ī Car seat clinics Ī Clerical duties Ī Computer and mapping projects Ī Department tours Ī Distributing emergency food baskets to the needy Ī Home Security Program Ī HomeSafe Program Ī 7UDIŅF 6DIHW\ 7HDP SURMHFWV

The program is not designed to have the volunteer replace professional staff, but is aimed at providing a supplementary and complementary role. Volunteers, when given appropriate training, can supplement present services and become a valuable addition to the Beaverton Police Department. In 2012 we had an active roster of 72 volunteers who donated more than 6,806 hours – the equivalent of three full-time employees.

The Beaverton Police Department places a high value on the contributions made by our wonderful volunteer staff. If you would like more information about the program, or how to become a volunteer yourself, please contact 503-526-2562.

BRG History

The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the first edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That first issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to first visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

BRG Advertising

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high traffic locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll find that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

THPRD: connecting people, parks and nature Board OKs new logo that’s clean, simple; rollout to be phased E\ %RE :D\W 7+35'

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District Board of Directors have unanimously approved a new logo -- the Âżrst major overhaul of the district symbol since the founding of THPRD in 1955. “We wanted a new logo that is fresh and modern and future-oriented,â€? said THPRD General Manager Doug

Menke. “The one we chose signiÂżes diversity, both in terms of our population makeup and the services we offer. We like how simple and clean and readable it is with bold colors. Plus it has an active look.â€? The words “Tualatin Hillsâ€? are purposely larger than the rest of the Park District name because that’s how many patrons refer to the agency. Another reason was to distinguish THPRD from public agencies with “Tualatin Valleyâ€? in their names. Approval of the logo culminated a creative process that started several months ago when Frank Creative of Portland was chosen as project

consultant. The district reviewed dozens of design options by the contractor and listened to many opinions before narrowing the choices to one. Because of all the ways a logo is used, and the need to control costs, the district will use a phased approach to rollout. Some applications will be implemented quickly while others will take more time. Full implementation will take years. “We’re excited about this, Menke said. “It sends a message that we embrace change – even when it comes to our longtime logo. We

aren’t resting on our past. We’re taking on new service and ¿nancial initiatives while also working to better serve our dramatically changed community, and the new logo is part of that spirit of action.

About THPRD Formed in 1955, THPRD is the largest special park district in Oregon, spanning about 50 square miles and serving 230,000 residents in the greater Beaverton area. The district provides yearround recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Offerings include thousands of widely diverse classes, 90 park sites with active recreational amenities, 60 miles of trails, eight swim centers, six recreation centers, and 1,400 acres of natural areas. For more information, visit www.thprd.org or call 503/6456433.

After theft on MAX, deaf man gets new iPad - for free By FOX 12 Staff

A

week after his iPad was stolen on the MAX, a 62-year-old Beaverton man was surprised with a new one, thanks to generous donations from the community. The Portland Nerdfighters and Portland Singing Christmas Tree surprised Gary Meierotto with a brand new iPad at the Mac Store in Beaverton. Meierotto uses his iPad as his primary means of communcation. “This is like a miracle, I’m telling you, said Meierotto. “Like a miracle. The groups spent a week collecting donations from the community to purchase the new device. “We just wanted to make sure he had the very best iPad, said Willy Dolan with the Portland Singing

Gary Meierotto accepts his new iPad at the Mac Store in Beaverton. Christmas Tree. “It’s already loaded with everything he needs to communicate with friends and family. We also got him a nice case so he can hold onto it so nobody can take it from him. Meierotto was on an eastbound

MAX train in southeast Portland when two men began being aggressive toward him. When the train came to a stop at the 102nd Avenue transit station, one of the suspects grabbed the iPad right out of Meierotto’s hands

and ran off the train. Police have not recovered his stolen iPad, but now that he has a new one he can once again communicate with family and friends out of town. “For the Portland Singing Christmas Tree, he’s a gentleman who comes to our shows every year and he’s our biggest supporter in terms of enthusiasm and love, said Dolan. “He’s an amazing man. Meierotto’s new iPad is loaded with security features including tracking software and password protection. Why did you know you had a project due in college on X Day‌and you waited until the night before to get it done? 6RPHWKLQJ KDSSHQV LQ WKH ŅQDO few minutes of a game. It’s time WR ņ\čWKHUH LV PRUH XUJHQF\ that’s for sure. Players, coaches, sales people, service experts, sales

managers, owners‌we bring out that extra effort that we have held in reserve. It’s the 4th Quarter! How has the game gone for you this year? OK? Amazing? Terrible? Well, it’s not too late to improve on all of that‌and WIN! <RX GHŅQH :,1čDQG WKH HIIRUW you and your team will put forth for the rest of the game! have a confession. I loathe bell peppers! Admitting this often makes me feel like a failure as a vegetarian but I am afraid that it is the truth. Red, yellow, green – it doesn’t matter. If you want to kill a pizza for me, top it with bell peppers. When I tell this to people they are often appalled that I won’t make an exception for roasted peppers, which they seem to think do not taste like bell peppers. Ugh! The mere thought of it makes my stomach churn. There is only one recipe in which I can tolerate bell peppers and that is in this salad from my friend Liz, a cooking instructor in San Diego. The tasty sweet and sour dressing does something to the peppers to make them acceptable to my taste buds. rt On Broadway announces a new exhibit titled “Nature Inspired” featuring work by Elaine Tan and Gretha Lindwood. Tan’s artfully handcrafted jewelry and Lindwood’s evocative paintings in oils or pastels celebrate the diversity of the individual artists’ engagement with nature. The public is invited to a reception to honor the artists and their work Sat., Nov. 9, from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary wine and refreshments will be served. The show continues through Nov. 30. Tan explains, “Born and raised in Hong Kong, I bring with me a multi-cultural sensitivity to my art. One of my passions is the process of weaving together a symphony of colors, textures and design. To me, nature itself is art in its purest form. That is why I love to combine the use of natural semi-precious stones, organic materials, metals, stones and other materials to create a design that displays a delicate mix of balance vs. asymmetry, simplicity vs. complexity, much like the balancing of “yin and yang”. Lindwood’s love of nature is evident in her landscape paintings. Working with oil paints on canvas or pastels on sand paper, Lindwood paints primarily en plein air, a French term meaning in the open air. She points out, “My Swedish parents made sure my sister and I received plenty of fresh air and playtime outside, and we went on many family hikes and campouts. I guess I was destined to work outside.” She adds, “I often hear comments about how a viewer can imagine themselves in the scene I’ve painted.” By Gretha Lindwood

Inspired by his love for music, he painted a stylized Daft Punk helmet after one of his favorite bands. Originally, he had made a smaller version of the painting and posted a photo of it on instagram, where he showcases much of his work. One of his followers saw the picture and responded, “I love this! Not only does Takata sell his artwork, he also sells T-shirts with his good friend, Andrei Eugenio, another junior at Beaverton High. I

know that I am not alone in my adoration of animated movies. Ever since I was little, movies made by Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar have always fascinated and entertained me with their beautiful art and magical plots. In fact, I have many fond memories of watching movie after movie in marathon sessions with my older brother which was sometimes even more entertaining than seeingg them in theaters. But out ut of all of the talented creators off the scores of animated movies I’ve ’ve been privileged to see, Hayao Miyazaki will always be my favorite. As a writer, director and nd producer, Miyazaki not only entertained ntertained me as no other can but ut he also gave my imagination wings to soar to new heights and new ew places. This past September however, with Miyazaki announcing his retirement, etirement, I would like to celebrate his is work and to urge any of my ellow teens to do the same: watch fellow RPH RI KLV ŅOPV \RX KDYHQģW VHHQ VRPH RI KLV ŅOPV \RX KDYHQģW VHHQ et or rewatch the ones you have. yet Talk about them, share them or if ou’re like me, say a prayer thanking you’re he man who brought me along on so the many wonderful journeys to places soo unique and gorgeously drawn hat somewhere in my imagination, that I know they exist. 7KH FUHDWHG E\ E\ +D\DR 7KH ŅOPV ŅOPV FUHDWHG +D\DR Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are lways extremely clever and always niquely creative. Tales of a Beaverton Super-Mom: Now that's Embarrassing!

I

t appears that my current purpose in life is to embarrass my 6th grader. Initially I could pinpoint my transgressions to some of my more outrageous behaviors, such as humming along to the music playing in the grocery store, waving at someone I THOUGHT I knew but actually DIDN’T, or having the audacity to ASK a question when I didn’t understand. Now, though, I’m getting a bit confused about what causes the humiliation: some days it’s because I’ve dressed too hipster and some days because I’m too dowdy; often it’s from making a joke WKDW 12 21( XQGHUVWDQGV H[FHSW PH ZKR ODXJKV K\VWHULFDOO\ RU making a joke that is “TOO funny GLG QRW HYHQ NQRZ VXFK D FDWHJRU\ H[LVWHG 7KHQ WKHUH KDYH DFWXDOO\ been times where I’m shunned because I turned to the right instead

But that doesn’t mean there are some days I wish my daughter would get that just yesterday I was rockin’ it in my acidwashed jeans and Bomber jacket— and that I, too, would have died had my mom attempted to sing along to Def Leppard in public. Fortunately, I still don’t embarrass my 9 yr-old, who actually requests to hear about my uber-interesting life. Recently she was quizzing me on my marital history, and I was enjoying the little trot down memory lane— remembering the good, the bad, the things that happen when you’re together 20 years. I thought the FRQYHUVDWLRQ ZRXOG LQVSLUH KHU WR Ĺ…QG someone as wonderful as her father someday, but when I asked why she was contemplating this topic so much, she replied, “Oh, I’m not sure I’m

Well, honey, the truth is it’s kind of like marriage. Sometimes it gets uncomfortable but you simply learn to deal with it. Often it’s the 4 yr-old who keeps me grounded and reminds me that life will never get better than this: playing incessant imaginary games IRU LQĹ…QLW\ WKDW KDYH QR EHJLQQLQJ or end or purpose to speak of‌other than the entertainment I get from listening to her perspective on life as she talks through her dollies.
