2 – Beaverton Business Directory

The Beaverton Business Directory & Shopping Guide is published by Cedar House Media, Beaverton’s homegrown print and graphics shop.

Hello Beaverton, This issue of the paper is dedicated to those wonderful people in our community, 55 or better. If you are below this age, then I know you have a parent or grandparent who’s doing their best to raise you right (and yes, eating peas is good for you!). And if you’re over 55, well turn to our Senior Resources Guide on page 3–5 where we’ve highlighted the Senior Health & Wellness Fair on October 1st at the Elsie Stuhr Center. This is going to be a great event with speakers, vendors, snacks and prizes. Other features in this issue include a local guide to education resources called The Learning Curve (page 22) and a new nonproďŹ t section (page 13). Lastly, don’t forget to check out our new redesigned Village on Scholls Ferry shopping map on pages 18–19. It’s a great little group of stores just down the road from the new Progress Ridge shopping center. Well, enjoy this issue and we’ll see you back next month. Sincerely Yours,

Cory Burden Owner of Cedar House Media (and long time Beaverton resident)

“Jacqueline has over 19 years experience in the health Âżtness industry and specializes in functional Âżtness exercise programming for individuals to prevent, better manage and treat chronic medical conditions and illness, as well as balance and mobility disorders,’’ SatterÂżeld said.

Attendees also may bene¿t from free screenings, provided by the Lions Club, for blood pressure, hearing, vision, glaucoma and diabetes. Additional screenings for issues such as balance and Àexibility will be provided by other vendors.

The first settlers arrived in this area they referred to as ‘Beaverdam’ in 1847. Since then, our city has grown and prospered. Here are some little known facts to help you get to know our beloved city a little better. 2011 was the 2nd wettest Spring in 117 years. The native Americans who lived in the Beaverton area were known as the Atfalati, a division of the larger Kalapuya tribe. The railroad came to Beaverton in 1871. A normal year has 13 days of 90+ degree temperatures. The Beaverton main post office is located on Betts Ave, a street named after our first post master, George Betts.

Mission To provide education to the community about our cultural heritage through the preservation, interpretation and celebration RI RXU KLVWRULF SDVW Please join us as we celebrate, interpret, and preserve our city’s heritage. 12412 S.W. Broadway Tues and Thurs 12pm - 4pm 503-430-0106 www.historicbeaverton.org.

Built in 1857, the Fanno Farmhouse is the oldest structure in Beaverton. The first settler in Beaverton was Captain Lawrence Hall in 1847. At an average of 36 inches of rain per year, Beaverton ranks lower than both Baltimore and Miami. Visit the Beaverton History Center (12412 SW Broadway) to learn more about historic Beaverton.
