The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper for the city of Beaverton, Oregon. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 with the help of the city and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, just over one year later, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a huge cross section of the city from shopping malls like Washington Square and Cedar Hills Crossing to public entities such as the police and ďŹ re departments, the Visitor’s Association (WCVA), the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Committee and the park district (THPRD) to name a few.

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, shop and work. With a focus on small or local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby businesses and give them a chance before moving on.

or three years, Janet Allison and the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation’s Board of Trustees have been eager to help fund Oregon’s ¿rst baseball ¿eld designed for special needs athletes.

F

Their goal is now one giant step closer to reality. In July, the THPRD Board of Directors approved Somerset West Park, located at NW 185th Avenue and NW Parkview Blvd., as the site for Champions Too Field. The multi-use Âżeld will be completed as part the upcoming bond measure renovation of Somerset West, scheduled to begin in 2013 after a master plan is submitted and approved. “The district will build infrastructure, including parking, and the foundation will raise the money to build the Âżeld itself,â€? said Allison. “It will be used by baseball, soccer, football and lacrosse teams, but disabled teams will have priority to use

the Âżeld, which is being designed to help facilitate their participation.â€? Champions Too Field will be built to the standards of Miracle League Association, a national nonproÂżt that has built more than 40 accessible Âżelds, but none in Oregon. The diamond will include Ă€at bases, wider dugouts, synthetic turf and additional amenities to accommodate use by athletes with disabilities. Now that the location is set, the Park Foundation can begin setting its sights on raising more than $1 million needed to complete the project (which is in addition to $1.5 million in bond money the district will provide). The most ambitious fundraising plan in the Park Foundation’s history will include opportunities for naming rights on the Âżeld and/or other park amenities to help secure a generous lead gift, Allison said. “I’m very anxious,â€? said Allison, chair of the Park Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “All the trustees are excited and we talk about it at every meeting. We’ve been blown away by the idea since the day that (THPRD Superintendent of Sports) Scott Brucker came to us with Miracle League information and said, ‘Have you seen this?’â€?

Allison still vividly recalls the day, three years ago, that she and several trustees went to Sunset Park to watch the Challenger Division of Little League District 4. Special needs children were playing ball alongside ablebodied Little League “buddies,â€? who assisted with the batting, running and Âżelding.

THPRD and the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation will partner to build Oregon’s ¿rst athletic ¿eld for special needs athletes. The ¿eld will be located at Somerset West Park, which is at NW 185th Avenue and NW Parkview Avenue.

“There was a little girl with Down’s Syndrome,â€? Allison remembers. “After she hit the ball, she just kept running. When she got to home plate, everyone was cheering. She threw her arms up and just stood there. She was so excited.â€? On that day, Allison said, the Park Foundation became committed to making the Champions Too Âżeld its top priority.

Âżelds are often insurmountable,â€? Allison said. “When we went to that game, we were hooked.â€?

“All these kids want to do is play baseball, but challenges posed by normal

‘A real fairytale,’ Beaverton couple marries at hospital day before bride’s brain surgery By FOX 12 Staff

day before undergoing brain surgery to remove a massive tumor, Jamie Amos, of Beaverton, just wanted one thing: to be married. She and her boyfriend, Jon Tafoya, met when they were 17 in New Mexico and dated for several years before Tafoya moved to Oregon to be with his family. They reunited after Amos moved to Oregon to support Tafoya as he faced health issues. But this summer, Amos became the one who needed support. After experiencing terrible headaches, she went to the hospital and an MRI found a large brain tumor the size of a golf ball on her left lobe. The diagnosis was a huge blow for Amos, but she told a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center she was hoping to get married before her surgery later that week. She told staff she wanted to have the ceremony at the hospital because they had taken such good care of her. It wasn’t long before a whirlwind wed-

much support from human kind, it’s overwhelming and touching,â€? she said at the time. “It’s a real fairytale.â€? About 50 guests attended the outdoor wedding after being invited by text message and Facebook. Amos said the wedding better prepared her for her surgery, knowing she would have her husband by her side. A day later, Providence St. Vincent staff told FOX 12 the surgery went well, and that Amos‘ progession was “amazing and Jamie Amos and Jon Tafoya took part in a wedding ceremony the day before Amos underwent surgery to unexpected.â€? remove a massive tumor from her brain. Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Wash the sweet potatoes well (with skin on) and pat them dry. Bake for about 50-60 minutes; until fork tender. Don't turn off the oven as yet. 2. Take the sweet potatoes out of the oven, cut in half and leave it to cool. Once cooled scoop the sweet potato out of the peel. Make sure to leave a thin layer inside the peel. This will help it stand on its own. I used a grapefruit spoon to scrape out the sweet potatoes. 3. Mash the sweet potato with the cream cheese. 4. SautĂŠ the onion & garlic in olive oil. Add fresh spinach and heat for 2-3 minutes and set aside. 5. Stir in sour cream and spinach with the sweet potato-cream cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste 6. Coat potato skins with a drizzle of oil and bake to get a crispier outside; about 5 minutes. 7. Remove the skins from the oven and ďŹ ll each skin with the sweet potato mixture. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese. 8. Bake again for 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Ingredients t 2 large sweet potatoes t 2 Tbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil t 1/2 med. red onion chopped t 2 cloves garlic, minced t 1 bag fresh baby spinach t Âź cup light sour cream t 2 ounces light cream cheese t Âź c. shredded mozzarella cheese t salt and pepper to taste

New Business Spotlight

9UFOE #BSSF #FBWFSUPO Xtend Barre Beaverton owners Sara Peelle, Emily Harrington and Whitney Mallard are proud to introduce the hottest new barre workout to the westside of Portland. Sara, Emily and Whitney met through their husbands who played football at the University of Oregon together. These NFL wives came together to bring this workout to Oregon. Sara Peelle opened her ďŹ rst Xtend Barre studio in San Diego in May of 2011, and is an instructor as well. Xtend Barre is a 55 minute full body workout that fuses dance, and Pilates with sculpting exercises at the ballet barre to give you that chiseled dancers body. The classes are open to all ďŹ tness levels. They are for any age, gender or ďŹ tness background. We offer exercises that can be modiďŹ ed for beginners, prenatal clients, even clients with injuries. If you are looking for an extreme challenge we can amplify the exercises for advanced clients as well. We offer classes 7 days a week, as early as 6:15 am, and as late as 6:45 pm. Please check our website for our class schedule and pricing. Your ďŹ rst class at Xtend Barre Beaverton is FREE! We look forward to seeing you at the barre! Xtend Barre Beaverton team
