BRG History

The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

BRG Advertising

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll ďŹ nd that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

haron Hoffmeister, the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s superintendent of Aquatics, still remembers the day, in 1980, that she Âżrst met Sharron Patapoff. “I was in a water safety instructor class. There was this woman in a funny little sailor suit with a skirt,â€? Hoffmeister said. It wasn’t just the outÂżt that made Patapoff stand out. She was older than her peers, in her mid-30s, the mother of two young children. Though Patapoff had no previous experience as a THPRD swim instructor, she completed the class and was offered a part-time lifeguarding job by Peg Ogilbee. “I told her I wasn’t looking for a job,â€? Patapoff remembers. “She said,

‘I’ll just give you a couple of hours a week’.’’ I lived nearby, so I said OK.â€? And so began a 33-year tenure with the Park District that ofÂżcially ended on Sept. 2, when Patapoff swam into retirement. She was supervisor of the Beaverton Swim Center the last 30 of those years. “It was supposed to be fun money, but it turned out it was milk money,â€? joked Patapoff, who went through a divorce not long after she began lifeguarding. “The split happened, I had my foot in the door and the rest is history.â€? Her legacy includes THPRD’s Specialized Aquatics program, which she started at the Aloha Swim Center and brought to Beaverton Pool. “It was a labor of love,â€? said Diana Waterstreet, former Aloha supervisor. “I don’t think Sharron had a lot of previous experience with that segment of the population, but she developed an interest in those kids and started bringing them in for

private lessons. It just engulfed her. She has a way of making things go.â€? Launched with only eight swimmers, Specialized Aquatics now serves more than 100 each term. The program has bettered the lives of hundreds of participants. Patapoff said it’s the part of her job she’ll miss the most. 6KDUURQ 3DWDSRII DUPV RXWVWUHWFKHG ZDV ZHOO NQRZQ DURXQG 7+35' IRU KHU VLQJLQJ WR FR ZRUNHUV +HUH VKH She will continue to VHUHQDGHV 0DUJDUHW .HHKQ DW .HHKQÂśV UHWLUHPHQW SDUW\ volunteer with Special LQ 3DWDSRII KHUVHOI UHWLUHG UHFHQWO\ DIWHU \HDUV DV Olympics, where she VXSHUYLVRU RI WKH %HDYHUWRQ 6ZLP &HQWHU will maintain contact district without her,â€? They perform using music, dance, interpretive movements, drama, color and equipment to tell a story for the audience. The team also gives the participants a unique opportunity to learn teamwork and experience personal growth. Coaches said the students make social connections with their teammates, along with other families, that are not typically found in activities geared toward special needs children. Peer helpers also learn about patience and tolerance while gaining a better understanding of the challenges people with disabilities face every day. The student volunteers take pride in the accomplishments of their “star,â€? according to parents and coaches.

The Beaverton STARS have their sights set on the Color Guard World Championships in Ohio in 2014. Throughout the school year, the Beaverton STARS perform in front of spectators, sometimes numbering in the thousands, at major color guard venues, high schools and community events. Now, they’re all working toward going

to the Color Guard World Championships in Dayton, Ohio in April 2014. “We’ve got about 20 kids that we’d like to send and of course we have to send one parent with each child, because they are special, and so we’re looking at some-

where between $35,000 and $40,000 to get us all there, said Heidi Petrowsky. Petrowsky was at a fundraising event in August to try and help the team reach that goal. The Beaverton STARS hosted a weekend-long garage sale at the end of August. A month earlier, the students, coaches and families organized a community car wash at a local Les Schwab Tire Center. In November, The Beaverton STARS will be part of the annual Cause + Event Run in Portland. The event, which includes a 5K walk, 5K run and 10K run, allows runners to raise money for the charity of their choice. The Beaverton STARS have a Facebook page updating their efforts to get the team to the championships in Ohio next year. … Look for more inspiring stories on local students every Friday night in High School Spotlight on FOX 12’s Friday Night Lights.

This comedy that raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-standing friends: Serge, Marc, & Yvan. Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horriďŹ ed, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes "art." Yvan, caught in the middle of this conict, tries to please and mollify both of his friends. Which of the friends do you agree with, if any? In this thought-provoking program, discover ways your long-dead ancestors can become a presence in your day-to-day lives. Inspired by digging into her own ancestry, ďŹ nding a few skeletons in the closet, and learning how to reach out to her ancestors, Sarah Gramm Wolf is eager to share her insights. Former hospital chaplain and local speaker on death, dying, grief and loss, Sarah’s spiritual journey took her into exploring the role of ancestors in our lives. Why have they nearly been forgotten? A: Yes and no. Shopping center parking lots are what the law describes as “Premises Open to the Public.â€? As such, there are only certain statutes that can be enforced on the property. There is no statute that speciďŹ cally addresses the driving described here. However, one statue that can be enforced on Premises Open to the Public, and generally covers the driving described, is Carless Driving (ORS 811.135). Careless Driving is deďŹ ned as: driving “in a manner that endangers or would be likely to endanger any person or property.â€? So, depending on the circumstances, a driver could be cited for Careless Driving for taking that short cut through empty spaces if doing so endangers or would be likely to endanger any person or property (i.e. causes a crash).
