Message from the City

Volunteer at the Severe Weather Shelter By City Staff

T

he Beaverton Severe Weather Shelter was opened in January 2017 to provide a warm, safe space for adults experiencing homelessness to stay during the winter. The shelter is operated by Just Compassion of East Washington County. This winter, it will be open on Thursday nights from Nov. 2-Mar. 29, 2018 (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.) at the Beaverton Community Center (12350 SW Fifth St.). There is space for 30 adults RQ D ¿UVW FRPH ¿UVW VHUYHG EDVLV Dinner and breakfast is provided. Volunteers are essential for the operation of the shelter—we can’t open without enough support! They provide support in a variety of roles including: ‡ Greeters/Servers: Greet/sign-in guests and check bags. Set up the room for the evening, and help serve dinner, provided by Meals on Wheels.

‡ Overnight Host: Join guests for dinner, stay overnight, and help serve a light grab-and-go breakfast in the morning. ‡ Morning Help: Arrive early to help serve breakfast, check out guests, and clean/store supplies for the day. Volunteers will receive training and support throughout the winter seasons. They must be able to travel on-site in times of severe weather, such as heavy snow, ice, and rain. A training is schedule for Thursday, Oct. 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Beaverton Community Center (12350 SW Fifth St.).

Volunteers must be 18 years or older. To apply as a volunteer and attend the training or for more information or visit www.BeavertonOregon.gov/shelter or contact Megan Cohen at 503-526-2584 or mcohen@BeavertonOregon.gov.

#3( )JTUPSZ The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

#3( (PBMT Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. #3( "EWFSUJTJOH With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

%JTDMBJNFS The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the writers and do not necessarily reect the position of Cedar House Media and/or the Beaverton Resource Guide. 2 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 7–Issue 10 (October 2017)

his time of year is about changes - the change from summer to fall, students and teachers going back to school. 6RPH SHRSOH ÂżQG FKDQJH H[FLWLQJ EXW RWKHUV ÂżQG LW FKDOOHQJLQJ Since change is something we all have to deal with it, how can you make the process easier? Recognize that you will probably have some good feelings and some negative feelings about the changes in your life. This is normal. Be open to experiencing both the good and the bad, without trying to talk yourself out of your feelings. As you allow in all of your emotions, try to be present with

whatever you are experiencing today. Try to stay in the present, instead of dwelling on how things used to be or worrying about the future. Try to be open to new exSHULHQFHV <RX PD\ ÂżQG \RXUVHOI enjoying a new way of doing something once you get used to it. If you feel like you could use some extra support adjusting to a recent change, you may want to consider counseling. Scheduling an appointment with a counselor means making time to process your feelings about the changes you are experiencing. During counseling sessions you may also practice mindfulness exercises and explore coping skills to help you deal with change.

o you feel overwhelmed with change in your life? It’s no wonder; seniors encounter more change in this stage of human development than in most other life stages. Major changes and life transitions older people often experience include: ‡ Accepting services (e.g., delivered meals). ‡ Adjusting to an illness. ‡ Adapting to a device (e.g., cane, hearing aid). ‡ Becoming a family caregiver. ‡ %HLQJ RQ D ¿[HG LQFRPH ‡ Changing driving habits or ceasing driving. ‡ Finding meaning and purpose after a career. ‡ /RVLQJ D VSRXVH RU VLJQL¿FDQW RWKHU ‡ Moving from a familiar home. ‡ Needing assistance in the home. (University of Cincinnati, Ohio, 2011). Even one of these challenges may feel daunting. If you or someone you care about is in a time of transition it may help to remind yourself of some of the other challenges you’ve overcome in your lifetime. Seniors are incredibly resilient! Here are a few tips taken from a training resource (Look Closer, See Me) to help you to adapt to change: ‡ Seek information that will help you

understand the situation and reduce fear. If you feel confused, be patient with yourself and ask more questions. ‡ Strengthen relationships with people you trust by sharing your thoughts and feelings with them. ‡ Allow people you trust to partner with you in your wellbeing. Ask for their insights. ‡ Tell others how they might help. People who care about you will be relieved by not having to guess. ‡ Accept support from both informal (friends, family, neighbors) and formal (healthcare professional) helpers. ‡ Embrace your freedom of choice. ‡ Identify solutions: what does successfully adjusting and adapting to this change mean to you? Adapting to change is not only possible it is inevitable. United Homecare Services wants you to know you don’t have to go through it alone.

100 Years and Counting!

25 Habits That Happy Women Practice

Happy Birthday Marion Franklin

Part 1: Habits 1-6 By Aloha Curves/Jenny Craig

C

By Creekside Village Staff

W

hen I asked Marion Franklin what she thought of turning 100 years old this month, she quickly replied “the Lord has been very good to me. I have no health problems so to speak of, except a little bit of hearing issues. I never smoked, never drank and always walked with the Lord.â€? Not bad I say, not bad at all for 100 years of living! Marion Estella Franklin was born in Creston, Iowa on October 24, 1917. She grew up during the Depression years with her share of tragedies, struggles, joys and accomplishments. There was no television in those early years, so the winters were spent outside with neighborhood friends having snowball ÂżJKWV EXLOGLQJ VQRZ IRUWV DQG sliding down the perfect hill on a coal shovel. Likewise, in the summertime at her grade school, the kids would walk up a twostory tunnel that was used as D ÂżUH HVFDSH :LWK WKHLU WUXVW\ tennis shoes on to grip the metal, they would climb to the top and use bread wrappers made of wax paper to slide down. What fun, not to mention FAST! Life wasn’t all fun and games though. Tragically, her mother died when Marion was only 7 years old. “I suspected it was cancer,â€? she recalled. “It just wasn’t talked about in those days.â€? In addition, Marion’s father was a “railroad manâ€? and would have to leave quite often. Consequently, different aunts would come to the house to help take care of her. This way of life caused Marion to become a very independent person. She graduated from high school in Iowa and married Bill Franklin one year later. The young couple lived in a home owned by a single man who offered Bill a job picking corn from 7 am - 7 pm. The agreed upon wage was $1.00 a day and a meal. Marion often cooked for their bachelor

landlord to help earn extra money. However, being a young bride she explained, “I wasn’t a very experienced cook at 19 years old ya know, but I made applesauce, good applesauce.â€? As time went by the couple became pregnant with twins. But towards the end of the full term Marion became very ill. It was diagnosed that she had an appendicitis. During the surgery both twins died and to add to the tragedy she never knew the reason. “No one really ever could explain why they died,â€? 0DULRQ VDGO\ UHĂ€HFWHG 7KDQNIXOO\ though they went on to have 2 more children. “I have one boy, one girl and twins in heaven,â€? she added. After the war ended the family came out to Vancouver, Washington so Bill could work in the ship yards. Following that he and his father established a “slab millâ€? making 2 x 4s. Then the Franklins ended up spending the next 17 years managing several hotels near the coast. Many years later while living in Eddyville, Oregon, Marion became saddened by the fact that there were no churches in the tiny rural area near Eugene. So she set about to change that and became instrumental in establishing the Village Mission Church that still is active to this day (one of her proudest accomplishments). It is that part of your mind that drives you home when you have no idea how you got there. When you’re in the state of hypnosis you are always in control and won’t do anything you don’t want to do and just like sleeping you come out of trance anytime you want too.

H

Hypnosis lets you make the changes you want to make, letting go of stress, anxiety, motivated to lose weight – without going on a diet. Getting rid of addictions (whether it is smoking, alcohol, pain

medications etc.) the list of changes you can make is endless. I will work with you to see what is holding your back from making the changes and you might be surprised how easy it will be.

Our Town | C om m uni ty St ories Ask The Beaverton Car Guy

Why is This a Great Time to Buy a Car? By Larry “The Car Guy“ Ferguson

Hello Beaverton readers! f you’ve been thinking about a new car but haven’t felt ready to take the plunge, don’t put it off any longer, because the deals won’t get better any time soon.

I

Everybody knows the three factors that inuence new car deals: 1. New car prices and incentives 2. Interest rates 3. The value of your trade in. When incentives or trade-in values peak, it’s a good time to buy a new car. When interest rates drop, it’s a good time to buy a lot of things. Rarely do all three factors converge as clearly as they do today. Many advertised prices are not the absolute best prices we can get today. The smartest thing we can do in today’s automotive market is to do some research to narrow down your choices then contact a reputable broker.

Why a broker? When a dealership deals with an individual, they often make top dollar since they know the average person uses limited negotiation skills based on limited automotive knowledge. With a broker however, the dealerships know that they have to offer a competitive take it or leave it price. If the price does not make the broker happy, the broker can easily move on to another dealership. Worse though, if a dealership plays tough with an individual, he may lose one car sale but if he tries the same tactics on a broker, they could lose the dozens of new car sales a broker could bring each month!

Built up inventory For now, that built-up inventory can also help give you a great selection of colors and options to HDVLO\ ¿QG ZKDW \RXœUH ORRNLQJ for – especially if you’re looking for a sedan. Since the recession, sales of pickups, SUVs, crossovers, and minivans have exploded from just 35 percent of the market during the recession to around 60 percent today. Sales of mid sized sedans have dropped 16 percent, even as total car sales have risen. The auto makers, with billion-dollar factories and years-long planning processes, haven’t been able to adapt quickly enough, leaving excess sedan production stacking XS RQ RYHUÀRZ ORWV

Then we have the huge amount of 2017s on the lots as the 2018s are arriving. The new 2017s will have dealer cash or rebates, while there will be zero incentives on the 2018s. So clearly the dealerships want to move the 2017 inventory as quickly as they can. There also

Q:

If you are in a “turn only lane, are you required to put on your blinker?

A: (Answered by OfďŹ cer Scott Warren) Oregon regon Revised Statue (ORS) says that you are required to use your signal anytime you are going to turn or change lanes, so even n in a turn only lane. However, the Oregon Supreme Court (Case Law) says if you are in a turn only lane and are turning as directed by the turn only lane, you do not have to use your blinker. For example you are in a left turn lane and are turning left you do not have to have your blinker on to make the left turn. Case law wins against ORS, so no you do not need to use your blinker. That being said, you do have to use your blinker to get into the left turn lane. I see people all the time get into the left turn lane or right turn lane without using their blinker. Then half way down the lane they turn on their blinker. I have stopped people for this and educated them that they did not signal correctly.

Q:

My car was in a bad accident but it still runs and the signals work. Can I still drive it on the street even though it’s all smashed up? A: Being smashed up in and of itself is not a violation. However, just having signals that work are not the only requirement. ORS 815.020 Operation of unsafe vehicle is a catch all statue, that says you can’t drive an unsafe vehicle on the roadway. ORS chapter 815 Vehicle Equipment Generally (ORS 815.005 to ORS 815.555) tells you all the equipment that you have to have to operate a vehicle legally and safely. The Beautiful Wonders of Autumn Leaves

Missing Giraffe in Beaverton?

by Lani Garcia (11th Grader)

Fall is my favorite season of the year.

I

love the crisp, rainy days, the rich smelling candles, and all the vivid colored leaves that line the streets when they fall. Which brings me to the question... why exactly do leaves fall? Do they serve a purpose for trees and the environment, or are they just a nuisance?

S

When the story started to be shared online, police wanted to put the rumors to rest. “They are cute and we would search for one if they were missing,” the Beaverton Police Department posted on Facebook. Once it was clear there was no endangered giraffe in Beaverton, people were able to have some fun with the story. Some community members posted on the department’s Facebook page comments ranging from simple laughs to suggestions that this could be the start of a new mounted patrol or surveillance team. One commenter

Beautiful fallen leaves.

Many actually. First, I will tell you how leaves fall. Each deciduous (leaf-dropping) tree can sense the days getting colder and shorter, which signals them to produce a hormone. A chemical signal gets sent out and, well, the tree takes it from there.

also have antifreeze chemicals. The less fortunate deciduous trees, however, don’t have these tools and would freeze during the colder months with water stuck inside their veins. They wouldn’t be able to recover from this, and the tree would die. To get around this, they just grow new leaves each year and store nutrients to survive winter.

Why do trees get rid of their leaves?

The purpose doesn’t stop there.

If trees kept their leaves all year long, they would continue to provide the tree with nutrients they need to survive and reproduce. Evergreen trees (which don’t drop leaves) can outlast the cold, and that’s due to the fact that their foliage is covered in wax. Their cells

After they hit the ground, the leaves eventually decompose. This provides the soil underneath with nutrients, which in turn can help the tree, and the plants and animals surrounding it. Not only do leaves on the ground do

Now when your parents ask you to rake the leaves, you can tell WKHP WKDW WKHUH DUH EHQH¿WV WR OHDYing them on the ground (just make sure to keep storm drains clear)! With this, I hope you enjoy watching trees turn colors and drop their leaves this fall, knowing that they have a method to their madness!

noted that if the giraffe story had been true, the animal should get a ticket for being lost. Police responded that a lost giraffe can still be a law-abiding giraffe. “There is no state law or city code related to being a lost giraffe so there would be no reason to issue the giraffe a ticket,” the Beaverton Police Department posted online.

24 – Beaverton Resource Guide | Volume 7–Issue 10 (October 2017)

Three-year old Haley is in need of a new home! She is a very sweet kitty who loves attention. She thoroughly enjoys affection and is willing to return it. Haley would love to join adults, maybe with older children in a loving, friendly forever home. It is unknown how she would do with dogs. She has never gotten along with the cat that was in the household when she arrived, maybe she should be an only cat. The owner is moving so it is time for Haley to ďŹ nd a more suitable home. She is house trained and has been an indoor only kitty. She is spayed and has given a clean bill of health by her Vet in August. We hope you will give her a chance to win your heart. My name is Indiana. I was named after Indiana Jones because I am adventurous. I am about 10 years old, but full of energy and act much younger. Some of my favorite things in life are chasing small toys like hockey pucks, chasing a piece of

string, looking out any window, paper bags, and scratching my sisal rope post. I really, really like to be brushed and have my cheeks rubbed. I might be good with older kids, not with other cats, and I’m not sure about dogs. I have no medical issues, current on vaccinations, teeth cleaned in Aug 2016, and have excellent litter box manners. I am up for adoption because of my owners personal circumstances.

Toots and Bloomie are a bonded pair, are brother and sister and best friends. They’re about 5 years old, in excellent health, spayed/neutered, and current with vaccinations. Owner will ensure they get a health check prior to adoption. They will come with all kinds of kitty stuff. Bloomie is the pretty female, mostly white with black and some calico coloring. She’s deďŹ nitely more friendly with humans and will jump right on your lap for pets, but can be sensitive if frightened.

Both Toots and Bloomie are indoor/outdoor cats and have been used to the run of the indoors and outdoors at their current home, but really should be indoors only cats. They are now offered for adoption because the ďŹ ance’s dog is not cat friendly. However, they have lived peacefully with a best friend’s dog. It appears it is the dog not the cats who have a problem. They are ďŹ ne with supervised and respectful children. They will give you their love and devotion once they are settled in their forever home.

and pastry chef in Northern California for various bakeries and restaurants. Staying true to his German, Austrian and some Hungarian heritage (as well as his Romanian upbringing) and experiencing the lack of whole grain and European style breads he started his own business selling at the local farmers market. Check the website periodically to find more places to purchase breads near you.

with a father who made charcuterie at home. Doing things the old-fashioned way was commonplace. Elias later journeyed to Europe to apprentice in the kitchens of masters. It was there that he rediscovered the art of curing meat and found inspiration in the markets and mountain towns of the old world.

Ingredients are our inspiration and we seek out the best and freshest. We butcher antibioticfree Pacific Northwest pork to 100% lean, adding pure, soft fatback, and a judicious amount of sea salt, fresh garlic and freshly ground spices. Our cured meats are held in natural casings and maintained in the organic white mold that protects them.

Now, Ryan and Shane have bigger trucks, 20 farmers markets in the Portland area, more wholesale clients, and expanding to the Seattle market. They started with a dream and goal of cutting out the middle man and being a direct wholesaler to the retailer and consumer. They knew that not only would the fruit be fresher, but they would have the capability of selling their product at a MUCH lower cost. Thus far, we’re on our way to reaching our goals, and we’ve become a dream come true for our customers.

ProFarm Produce is a wholesale fruit and produce company that was founded by two brothers, Ryan and Shane Stonemetz, in the summer of 2008. Ryan and Shane are fourth generation farmers that had no desire of taking over the family business. They grew up watching their father and grandfather work hard every minute of everyday just to stress and wonder if the fruit warehouses controlling the market would pay enough to not only cover the expenses for the previous year, but also enough to provide for their family! So, Ryan and Shane both went to college and graduated in respected fields. Ryan living in Portland, and Shane living in Seattle, couldn’t believe the markup in prices of fruit from what the farmer got to what it was sold for in the stores. They were distraught knowing that their family puts in all the hard work, the expenses, the stress and pressure of growing high-quality fruit just to be underpaid and unappreciated by the “middle-man” and retailers! This is when ProFarm Produce was born. Ryan and Shane left everything they had going for them, bought a little 12-foot reefer truck and loaded it up with organic cherries. They took off to Portland, OR with no wholesale clients, but had a goal and were determined to succeed. They knew if they can just get the consumer to try their product and see the price, they’d be hooked. They joined a few local farmers markets in Portland, OR. The response they got from customers on the quality of their fruit and the prices they sold them at, Ryan and Shane knew they were on to something. Gradually they picked up a few wholesale clients that then referred other clients and ProFarm Produce began to grow!

THE STORY: At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. One of the most popular and successful plays of modern times!

Don’t Go That Route

Nightmare Hotel

COMMUNITY

FLASH FICTION “Hello, this is the Nightmare Hotel. How may we frighten you today?”

When life presents you the opportunity to shine, don’t let it slip through your fingers!

“Oh, um…my brother texted me this number?”

When a customer has a question, answer it QUICKLY! No ignoring...no waiting!

“Ah, yes. Daniel Eaton, I presume?” “Yeah. This is, uh…this is a hotel?”

If one of your beloved clients, who have chosen to spend their hard earned money with you has a problem...JUMP at the opportunity to fix it. OR...just flat out fix it...quickly! When answering a customer’s question, don’t “answer” it with by not addressing their problem, or providing zero solutions. Recently, I ordered some important equipment for my company. It was for an upcoming event. The company I order equipment from, is one of 4 companies I choose to spend money with. The website said I would receive my equipment in 5 business days. NO PROBLEM! I was one week out from my event. As we neared the event...no equipment. I called customer service, but alas, no humans were available to speak with. I left a voice mail that was never answered. I clicked on the EMAIL US tab, and inquired about my equipment. Fed Ex did not have a status report for me, because the equipment was not in the system yet. It had not shipped. I received a generic email 4 days after my event, telling me my equipment will be shipped the next day...5 days after the event, and 7 days

“Correct. We provide a range of services, from jump-scares to torture chambers. We’ve received numerous industry awards, and enjoy a four-pointfive rating on Yelp.” “That’s… Did you say ‘torture’?” past the promised delivery date. No apologies, no explanations, no personal sign off on the email. SO, I got my gear, but too late. I will use it for future events. I am happy with it. BUT, I am not happy with this company that I have spent $1000’s of dollars with. I am not happy with being ignored. I am not happy with being inconvenienced. I am not happy with the easy answers I never received.

No one likes to be ignored, and no one likes a fake, impersonal answer, that really does not answer your questions or solve your problems. If you go down this route, you lose!

BE GREAT! JUST BEING GOOD, KILLS GREATNESS! MAKE IT EASY FOR PEOPLE TO DO, AND KEEP DOING BUSINESS WITH YOU! LOOK UP…AND SURPRISE SOMEONE!

I am more than happy to take my business elsewhere. They lost. They lost me, they lost future business, they lost any advocating I would have done for them with other business people.

BE AVAILABLE...BE ACCOUNTABLE...IF A CUSTOMER ASKS QUESTIONS, GIVE ANSWERS...FIX PROBLEMS QUICKLY...SAVE FACE...SAVE LOSING CUSTOMERS.

BE HUMAN!
