BRG History

The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the first edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That first issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG Goals

Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to first visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

BRG Advertising

With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal. Not only do they want to know "What's Happening in Beaverton This Month" but they also agree with our philosophy of: "Shop Local - Give Local - Stay Local." As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print massive quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high traffic locations ready to be picked up by those who love Beaverton. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you'll find that we're just as interested in stretching your advertising dollar as you are!

52-year-old father of two with no history of heart problems was running on a treadmill at a Beaverton gym when everything went dark. Chris Augustine went into cardiac arrest at the Conestoga Recreation & Aquatic Center on April 19. “I don’t remember any symptoms at all prior to going down, he said. “I was just running. The people around him sprinted into action to save his life. They were all honored this summer at a special ceremony hosted by Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Edita Boguslawski ran to the front desk of the recreation center for help that day in April after Augustine was thrown off the treadmill. Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District workers didn’t hesitate getting to Augustine. Smith & Bevill Jewelers Presents

Story t happens all too often - a heartbreaking conversation at the counter with a client. Their story usually goes something like this: they bought a ring during their cruise ship vacation in the Caribbean. It was beautiful and sparkly and seemed like a really good deal. But then, they were doing dishes, taking out the trash or some other routine activity and oops, it broke or got twisted or worse, a stone was gone! They come to us in tears and we have the hard job of telling the truth: more often than not they got much less than they bargained IRU :KDW VHHPHG OLNH D WHUULĹ…F deal turns out to be poorly made with substandard materials and unethical practices. Recently a platinum ring came in that had paper thin prongs and solder (yellow gold) where it should have been welded. The

Moral of the story Protect your diamond by buying a mounting that is going to hold up to daily wear. If it’s too thin or poorly made you are risking the security of the stone. Buying by price alone will almost always cost you more in the end. Make sure you buy from someone who will be there to take care of your jewelry- for life. At Smith & Bevill you will ďŹ nd the most exquisite jewelry :H VHOHFW RQO\ WKH Ĺ…QHVW EHVW made pieces to be part of our collection. We are dedicated to quality and maintain our own in house metal-smiths and master watchmaker to ensure that work is being done at the highest level. „

With over 56 years of experience in Beaverton, Smith & Bevill Jewelers is a member of the community. Their knowledgeable staff is glad to take the time to help you make the right choices for all your jewelry needs.

fter you come home from the market do you just throw your purchases, still in their plastic produce bags, right into the refrigerator? If you do, you are committing a terrible crime. As the self-appointed Produce Police of the Beaverton Farmers Market, let me tell you why. The two enemies of produce are air and water. Exposure to air dries out your fruits and veggies, exposure to water rots them. That bag of lettuce that you threw into the fridge is exposed to air at the open end and exposed to moisture where the lettuce lays against the plastic. Under these conditions, your once beautiful lettuce will survive for only a couple of days before it becomes a mere shadow if it’s once fresh self. To store your produce for maximum shelf life, clean and organize it according to the directions below. Store in large air tight containers lined with paper towels.

Lettuce - dunk loose leaves in a sink full of cold water, spin in a lettuce spinner if you have one or drain in a colander. Try to get as much of the excess water off it as possible. Layer in your storage container with additional paper towels. Herbs - if you wash your herbs ŅUVW PDNH VXUH WKDW WKH\ DUH DV dry as possible before storage, especially cilantro which tends to be the most fragile of all of the common herbs. Store all herbs in the same container so they are at \RXU ŅQJHUWLSV ZKHQ \RX FRRN &DXOLņRZHU - trim green base from white head. Break it up if you need to store it in pieces. 6RPHWLPHV FXWWLQJ FDXOLņRZHU with a knife will lead to black metallic marks on the cut surfaces. 7RPDWRHV - most people will say never to refrigerate tomatoes. A few years ago, I started making a Bleu cheese dressing based on my Grandmas old recipe. I started giving it to friends, family and the parents of the kids I coached baseball for. Everybody

really liked it and started asking for more. Soon people would pitch in money and I would make a batch or two. Then we started selling it at the farmers markets and did very well. Our Bleu cheese dressing is hand made at our own ODA Approved commercial kitchen located at Hanks Thriftway in Hillsboro. We make the dressing fresh using about ¼ pound of cheese per jar, fresh chopped garlic, pepper and lemon juice as our preservative. We don’t add any special preservatives or a bunch of junk, it’s just plain good food. Our dressings are good on many different items like; baked potatoes, grilled salmon or steak, as a sandwich spread, veggie and chip dip or on a plain fresh garden salad. We enjoy giving our customers a great product and are very proud of our success in making some ones day a little bit better. Enjoy!

classic Lebanese comfort food that Hoda and her husband Hani opened their own place in March of 1999. With beliefs in the highest quality ingredients, meals made fresh daily from scratch and an atmosphere that is both comfortable and jovial, Hoda and Hani have dedicated their lives to their corner of 34th and Belmont Street. And it’s no wonder that their restaurant bustles: everything from Hoda and Hani’s warm welcome at the door to the piping pita fresh from the oven to the delicious and festive family-style platters encourages you to feel at home and enjoy eating with others. Their spices and their portions are authentic and generous, their eggplants are hand-roasted, their tender lamb hails from New Zealand and their menu uses only the purest olive and vegetable oils. Hoda and Hani invite you to experience their legendary Lebanese hospitality for yourself. Taste the care in Hoda’s delicious food and make yourself right at home.

4FOJPS $JUJ[FOT "EWJTPSZ $PNNJUUFF Is the Village Movement Right for Beaverton?

A

ccording to a recent survey by AARP, 89% of older adults want to age in their own homes and neighborhoods. Boomers often have a different vision of aging than their parents and

grandparents. Most Boomers and older adults vision themselves as aging-in-place, in their own home, or at least in the neighborhood and community they know and love. Fortunately, their desire to agein-place turns out to be a very good thing—good for them and good for society. Aging-in-place has been found to improve seniors’ overall health, life satisfaction and

self-esteem. It improves both their longevity and their quality of life. So, how do we accomplish this? The Village Movement may be the answer and they do this by building a community that works together. By not being age or income segregated, Villages dramatically reduce isolation and help restore purpose and meaning to members OLYHV DV HDFK Ĺ…QGV WKHLU SXUSRVH within the community. Villages provide a way to “pay it forwardâ€? through an empowerment model. Instead of asking, “What is someone going to do to help me?â€? They ask, “What can all of us working together do to help each other?â€? 7KH\ DUH HIĹ…FLHQW DV WKH\ GR not duplicate services by making full use of existing community resources. Villages also dramatically reduce the burden on adult children of aging parents by providing the parents with an alternative system of support, which is reliable, affordable and appealing. „ By Judith Auslander, MA

"VUP 2VFTUJPOT "VUP "OTXFST Meet Larry Ferguson, Beaverton's Car Guy

Question: Larry, I appreciated reading your recent article that was published in the August edition of the Beaverton Resource Guide. That was very kind of you to prepare and share that helpful information. I have a question that I am hoping that you can advise me on. I actually have a 2009 Chevy &RORUDGR , NQRZ QRW DQ ,QĹ…QLW\ with 4WD. My issue is that the truck will occasionally switch from 2WD to 4WD on its own. It seems to be getting worse at this issue, and occurs mostly during hot days in the summer (which is strange). There is no warning that the switch from 2WD to 4WD is being done, and I sometimes don't know it has made the switch until I have driven a ways. Also my heater fan or air conditioning fan will not work on speed #2, however all the other speeds operate normally. I have spoken with the dealer,

and they claim that they have never heard of such an issue and do not know what the problem is. I have visited several private transmission shops and they are just as perplexed. Do you have any advice on how I can pursue a solution to this issue? Thank you so very much! ~Ray B. (Sexton Mt.) Answer: Hello Ray, this is an easy one. The 4x4 engaging on it’s own is the change-encoder motor in the transfer case. As the components heat up from being operated, the metal inside the encoder expands with heat, and causes a connection to be made, just like pushing the 4x4 button, therefore engaging the 4x4. With the addition of electronic buttons, and the removal of actual shift levers, there are more failures. Secondly, the blower motor, not operating on all speeds is always the blower motor resistor. This part changes the amount of electrical current, supplied to the blower motor, giving you different fan speeds, through, different amounts of electrical current. Thanks for making contact. I look forward to meeting you in person. ~Larry

By Larry Ferguson

Follow Up: Hi Larry, I will certainly follow your advice, Larry! I had previously spoken with two service advisors on two different occasions on this issue, and neither had any idea what the problem could be. However, I am now equipped with better information (thanks to you!), and plan to be talking with them soon. I had earlier sent the Service Manager a letter to explain this matter and requested his assistance with addressing. That was before I spoke with you, of course. When he responds, I can now discuss with him the things you have shared with me on this matter. I will get back to you as soon as I learn more. My sincere thanks. I, too, look forward to meeting your soon, Larry. ~Ray B. (Sexton Mt.)

was surprised and a little disappointed ed to read Larry Ferguson’s on’s anti-small business ess article in the August st 2013 issue off the Beaverton Resource Guide. o many civilians, the chevrons on a sergeant’s shoulder or gold bar on a lieutenant’s collar are unnoticeable beyond the badge worn on our uniforms. When a member of our community is seeking help and they reach out to one of us, rank has little to no meaning.
