BRG History: The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.
BRG Goals: Beaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to ďŹ rst patron nearby businesses and give them a chance before looking at stores outside our community. BRG Advertising: With our unique layout, colorful design and exclusive community content, our readers are beyond loyal as reected by our 80%+ readership rate each month since early 2013. Not only do they want to know what’s happening in Beaverton each month, but they also agree with our philosophy staying local. As a business in the Beaverton area, your ad will be seen by those who are most willing to go out of their way to keep their dollars close to home. These shoppers, your potential new customers, also happen to be our best readers! In addition, we don’t print large quantities and mail them out to uninterested parties. Our papers are located in convenient and high trafďŹ c locations ready to be picked up by those who shop local. With low rates, targeted distribution and a willingness to provide more value than what you pay for, you’ll ďŹ nd that we’re just as interested in introducing your business to the community as you are!

Nature & Trails’ big idea earns a big payday from the Metro Council by Amy Milshtein
$70K award will help district link Latino students to nature The Metro Council has awarded nearly $70,000 to THPRD’s Nature & Trails Department to expand afterschool nature programming and develop a workforce development program for Latino students over the next two years. Starting this winter, the Nature Experiences and Workforce Training (NEWT) program will include afterschool and weekend programming at four Beaverton School District schools and a summer youth development program to recruit, train and employ high school-age Latino students. The NEWT program plans to address all three of the program grant goals – promoting cultural, environmental and economic equity. Welcome to Freeland Spirits, Portland’s new craft distillery. Freeland is named after my Meemaw (that’s what we call grandmas in Texas) Freeland, who never touched a drop of booze in her life but taught me that all good things come from scratch. And that women can be anything they want.

just a cube of ice. Whiskey is coming – buy we have to wait until it is aged to perfection. The timing is all up to the whiskey. Cory Carman, of Carman Ranch, raises grass fed beef and pork in the heart of some of the Oregon’s best ag land in Wallowa County. Cory is growing grain for Freeland whiskey, because we believe the best grain in the world deserves to turn into the world’s best whiskey. Cory is planting rye this spring, as part of her new crop rotation of beef, pork and whiskey. Once its harvested and milled, Molly will distill the rye and send it to dream sweet dreams in Oregon oak barrels. While we wait, Molly will play Beyonce lullabies in the barrel room. •
At Freeland, we believe in “equal opportunity drinking.”

Come visit us. ALL are welcome at Freeland.

Thank you for reading, and here’s to the future of spirits. And to Meemaw.

Freeland Spirits celebrates the women of the craft. From the gals who grow the grain, to those who run the still, we’re creating superior spirits that celebrate all the Northwest has to offer. Freeland Spirits is one of very few women owned and run distilleries in history. Molly Troupe was born wearing a pair of chemist goggles and never took them off. With a background in biochemisty and a Scottish masters in distilling, Molly commands perfection with every spirit she orchestrates. Did I mention that women have more taste buds and 50% more olfactory cells? So don’t you want Molly making your spirits? I know I do.

In December we launched Freeland Spirits Gin, which is crafted by hand in small batches. A traditional copper pot still brings juniper and 13 other botanicals to life. Meanwhile, a state of the art vacuum still cajoles quieter flavors including fresh cucumber, honey, rosemary, mint and thyme. Yes, delicious in cocktails. But we suggest sipping it with
Mike and Patty Kloft of Lonely Lane Farms are third and fifth generation family farmers from Mount Angel, Oregon, near Salem, offering grass-fed and grass-finished beef and lamb and heritage pork raised sustainably in the Willamette River Valley. You’ll know their booth from the red-and-white checked tablecloths and board listing dozens of specialty items. Mike is also loving Lonely Lane’s new double-thick pork chops and double-thick ribeye steaks—both great for grilling. All of Lonely Lane’s meat is processed at their own packing facility on the farm, which is rare for a family farm; because of this, they are able to offer high-quality meat packing to other small Oregon farmers. Mike and Patty grow the forage that their animals eat, and they also work with a handful of family farms in the Willamette Valley to raise grass-fed and grassfinished lamb, and heritage pork. “Quality and supporting other family farms are incredibly important to us,” says Patty.

What are Aromatics? From humble beginnings amazing flavors emerge. Specific aromatic blends are used as a foundation of flavor in cooking. Almost every culture has their own unique combination of aromatics. For instance, in France they use Mirepoix and Duxelles, in Asia the heart of their cooking is a vibrant combination of ginger, garlic and scallions, a blend we call Three Star Blend. From Italy to Louisiana, USA different aromatic combinations help define the tastes of the region. Adding a different aromatic blend can completely change the overall flavor profile of a dish.

Sharing the Arts Professional Actor Finds Value in Beaverton’s Community Theatre THEATRE “Once we had the first rehearsal [for School House Rock] I said, ‘This is what I’m supposed to be doing. This feels right. I’m supposed to be a performer.’” And Brittain Jackson couldn’t be more right. “Following my dreams and passions is my only way of living,” he continued, “I can’t do anything else.” His mother, a professional Broadway performer, was a major arts influence in his life. He dove into the world of professional performance at an early age traveling with her on tour, and even performing with her on the Kennedy Center stage. Looking for something beyond his natural singing talent, he went on to explore the visual arts and, ultimately, to study dance at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. This opened doors for him to tour the world in dance companies and perform in venues ranging from 3,000+ seat opera houses to intimate spaces. So how did Brittain go from performing internationally in professional dance companies to the Beaverton Civic Theatre stage? A yoga class. “I was teaching a yoga class at VillaSport that Melissa [BCT Founder and Artistic Director] was attending. She came up to me after class and said that she heard me singing – I would sing during class - and invited me to audition for The Addams Family. That’s what brought me out of retirement.”

THE STORY: Based on the Emmy Award-winning 1970s cartoon, Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. One might assume that after years of training and working as a professional dancer, diving into community theatre might not be in the realm of interest for Brittain, but, he is quick to point out, “It’s not amateur theatre. Everyone has something that I don’t. Something that I can pick up and learn from. I was surrounded by people with experience.” He believes the value of BCT goes beyond just providing a chance for community members to learn and perform.
“It’s important to share the arts with the people. A lot of people don’t have access. Beaverton Civic Theatre gives people access at an accessible rate. And it inspires generations ahead. If a kid can see themselves in you onstage and say ‘I can do that,’ then job well done! Bravissimo!” As anyone who has been in the lobby following a performance knows, the Beaverton Civic Theatre experience is one of connection and camaraderie that carries on far after the final curtain falls. “Even if it’s a short-lived experience, it still makes a massive difference in your life. It doesn’t leave you,” Brittain says, “The beauty in that, is that it plants a seed for you to branch out and do the same thing with other people. If you didn’t know how to create a community, you do now.”

Smallfoot Smallfoot turns the Bigfoot legend upside down when a bright young Yeti finds something he thought didn’t exist—a human. FRIDAY, SEPT. 28 Smallfoot Little Women Night School Hellfest Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women has motivated women of all ages to dream together and celebrate family. From girls playing in the attic to women living with purpose, the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy—are committed to always supporting each other. Yet, growing up sometimes means growing apart. An aspiring writer, Jo leaves for New York determined to publish a novel. In the wake of rejected draft upon draft, her editor challenges Jo to write about something more interesting—her family. When tragedy brings the sisters back home, sticking together takes on new meaning. As Jo comforts her sick sister, Beth asks for one thing: a story. Jo knows the perfect one…by heart.

The burlap falls open at their needle-thin touch. The body beneath is still warm under gossamer and twine. Skin without fur or feather or scale is a rare delicacy that only the shed provides. So the harvestmen return, year after year, as their fathers did, and their fathers’ fathers, and their fathers’ grandfathers before them, lending their long legs to the reaping.

Meet Super Student Jackson Compton Another reason Jackson is a “super student” was the awards he received from HCCS during a special assembly. Jackson was chosen by his teachers for displaying the following characteristics:
There is an old, wooden shed under a mountain of ivy where the harvestmen come and go. The ancient hinges, rusted the color of dried blood, creak when the door is pulled open. The rocky hills echo their groans of protest, causing forest dwellers to perk their ears for a moment before returning to their routines. Once the warped door is propped open by a fallen log, the hinges soften back to sleep. The dead leaves, then, rustle their own indignation as boots scrape, dragging a heavy object wrapped in burlap through their brittle enclave. The hot-copper scent of life and death is not new to these woods, not new to the harvestmen, not new to the hinges or the leaves or the shed. The hot-copper scent lingers and then fades and then lingers again, especially in the fetid days of long-sun shortmoon. The scent lingers elsewhere through the forest as well, but not with the rock-and-stone
