One of the most popular and widely used graphing calculators is the Texas instruments TI-83 plus. This calculator was first introduced in the late 90s and hasn't really changed much at all. For the high school student or the college freshman, who is not majoring in mathematics the TI-83 plus is a very good choice. Before purchasing a calculator a student should probably ask his or her course tutors which calculator they require or recommend. Because the Texas instruments TI-83 plus has been around for so long most math tutors are very familiar and comfortable with it. There are more advanced calculators out there, faster, better screens, higher resolution, even color displays but they generally cost a lot more. If the student is majoring in mathematics or statistics one of these more expensive and more advanced calculators may well be necessary, but for the average student studying: pre-calculus, calculus and algebra the TI-83 is probably more than adequate. The student could save a little money by buying a used calculator but it should be thoroughly tested and the screen carefully examined before purchasing. Common problems with these used calculators are jammed, stuck or non-functioning buttons, cracked screens or dark spots on the screen. Dead pixels on the screen sometimes don't affect the usability and a student might consider a calculator with a few small dark spots if the price is right. The calculator should come with a USB cable a CD-ROM and the slide cover and a manual. If the calculator is missing any or all of these items it should not really be a deal breaker. The manual is able for free download on the Internet. The CD-ROM could be bought separately and the cable could also be bought separately or even borrowed from another student as and when required. Slide covers are also readily available on eBay. If a used calculator does not power up after new batteries have been installed then it may be necessary to change the back up battery which is a small Mercury cell under a small plastic cover just above the main batteries. A fresh set of name brand batteries should last about a year depending on the amount of use. The back up battery can last from one up to five years. One other major advantage that this calculator has over other calculators is that it is upgradeable. Someone just starting out with this calculator might consider reading one or more of the TI-83 plus Graphing Calculator books currently available. For most students the Texas instruments TI-83 plus is an excellent choice.
