Alright, you've got a great vacuum cleaner right? And your vacuum cleaner does a great job pulling dust and dirt from your carpets. But you have begun to notice areas on your carpet that don't look as good as they used to. And you don't think that the stains on your tile floor will be coming up anytime soon without some serious elbow grease. Having spent good money on your vacuum cleaner, do you really have to spring for more cleaning appliances? Lately you have been hearing about two appliances that you feel may be an aid in your battle to keep your home looking its best. You may not be sure if the functions of these two appliances can overlap. That is, can you use one instead of the other and vice versa. Or do you need to own both in order to address the cleanliness needs of different types of flooring? The two cleaning appliances you have been hearing about are the steam mop and the steam vacuum cleaner. As its name implies, the steam floor mop is just that. It is a mop that provides steam to the floor surface to be cleaned. But instead of the old sponge mop that you would dip into a progressively dirty pail of tepid water before wringing out and mopping your floor, the steam mop supplies steam through the mop head to the floor. These floor steam mops incorporate a small container on the handle with a 1 - 2 cup capacity. The water in this container is heated up in about 30 seconds and applied to the surface you are cleaning by squeezing a trigger on the handle. There is no vacuuming action with the steam floor mop. The dirt and stains that are released by the action of the steam are mopped up with a micro fiber cleaning pad that you will later throw into your washing machine. Since you do not add chemical cleaners to the container and are using steam alone, some folks feel that this is a cleaning system that is more friendly to the environment and safer to their family than using chemical cleaners. The other cleaning appliance you have been hearing about is the carpet steam cleaner. The carpet steam cleaner can be likened to your upright vacuum cleaner in its size and overall appearance. And even though it does provide a vacuum function, it provides a few other important cleaning functions as well. Like the floor steam mop, this carpet cleaning machine does provide heated water or "steam". However it also provides a scrubbing brush driven agitation system and as its name implies and as mentioned above, a vacuum function as well. As you may have already guessed, the floor steam mop is used primarily for hard surfaces such as the tile floors of your kitchen and bathrooms. The steam vacuum cleaner on the other hand is designed primarily for your carpets. Can the floor steam mop be used on your carpets and can the steam vacuum cleaner be used on your hard floors? Some of the floor steam mops do come with a carpet glider attachment that allows you to spot steam trouble areas of your carpet. However, these mops do not provide agitation or vacuum. You would need to hand scrub the steamed area if this area of your carpet required agitation to loosen
