We are now entering one of the most beautiful seasons here on the Eastern Shore. When many people think of Cape Charles and Bay Creek, fun-filled summer days come to mind. But Bay Creek residents know that spring is one of the Eastern Shore’s best kept secrets.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE:
Continued on next page...

2024 has only a few months under its belt and Bay Creek is already bustling with activity and excitement. Last year saw significant additions and enhancements at the Coach House Tavern and the new Golf Pro Shop, continued new home construction activity in Bay Creek’s newest neighborhoods, and robust real estate activity.“We welcomed many new neighbors to Bay Creek in 2023 and we look forward to doing the same this year,” says Bobby Masters, President of Bay Creek Development.

It’s Your Serve!

Bay Creek is excited to announce a significant new addition to our Club amenity offering for 2024: pickleball courts! “We are in the early stages of the pickleball construction project, which is slated to offer six new courts later this year for the enjoyment of our members,” says Bobby.

“Pickleball has been one of the most popular and fastest-growing sports in the nation for some time now, and we’ve seen it establish itself as much more than a trend. The development team has been working on this plan for some time. We see it as an exceptional opportunity to create an amenity of lasting value that can serve our diverse and multi-generational membership.”

Great new things are happening at the Coach House Tavern, too. After several well-received additions and renovations last year, the Coach House is on track to greatly expand its capabilities once again. “We are now in progress with the latest renovation of the Coach House. This is an expansion of the kitchen that will significantly increase our ability to host and cater special events,” Bobby says. “The renovation is slated to be complete in the coming months and we’re looking forward to seeing our talented Executive Chef, Christian Lofland, and his team do incredible things!”

Bayside Village Releases

Phase Two

Bayside Village, with its many storybook cottages and stately historically styled homes, is without a doubt one of Bay Creek’s most iconic neighborhoods. It is truly the stuff of dreams with pedestrianfriendly streets, walkable green spaces, and incredible proximity to the beach and the Life Center. “The upcoming release of Phase Two of Bayside Village has generated a great deal of excitement,” says Bobby. “Bayside Village really captures the essence of what Bay Creek is all about. There’s an irresistible charm about it.”

“This year, we’re already welcoming new neighbors and getting underway with new amenities. Add to that a robust schedule for Nature Preserve experiences with Ranger Stan, a great offering of fitness and wellness classes at the Life Center and a Club calendar that is full to bursting with all kinds of great events and gatherings.”

When it comes to the year ahead, Bobby believes this may be the best one yet.

In total, 58 new homesites have now been released. As with the first phase of Bayside Village, Phase Two will be designed and brought to life guided by the principles of Traditional Neighborhood Development. “We’re already seeing a great deal of interest,” says Bobby. “This is something a lot of people have been waiting for—and that’s evident in the significant number of homesites that have already been purchased. It’s easy to understand—these sites are beautiful! And they’re all just as convenient to the beach and Life Center, too. I look forward to seeing the next phase of this legendary neighborhood come to life.”

Club Happenings

It won’t be long until the spring season is upon us here at Bay Creek. Though 2024 has a few months under its belt, there’s something about spring that really feels like a new beginning.

Soundings

Our beautiful Bay landscape is just beginning to brighten with budding trees and flowers. Here at the Club, there’s something else blooming, too—an exciting new season of Club activities and events. Bob Ewing, General Manager of the Bay Creek Club, gives us a glimpse of what members and their guests can look forward to in this lively new season.

Planning for Excellence

Spring at Bay Creek is an exhilarating time, and the activity is as diverse as it is exciting. One of the keys to a Club that runs smoothly and offers the best experience for everyone is planning and collaborating with members. That’s just what Bob and his team have done and continue to do.

“The early months of the year allow us to evaluate the past year and set a plan to make your Club experience even better,” says Bob. “We held our annual Town Hall meeting with all members in late January and discussed all the accomplishments of 2023 and what’s on the table for 2024. It’s always illuminating to hear new feedback—what special events really resonated with members, what activities members would like to see more of… as Club Manager, that’s exactly the dialogue that helps us tailor the Club to be the very best it can be.”

“The Club is a living, breathing entity,” says Bob. “It grows…it adapts to best serve its members. I’ve had many great conversations with members, some of which were just in passing that have inspired me to look at something a little differently. It’s members’ ideas and input that help make the Bay Creek Club a very special place.

Golf: On Course for an Incredible Season

When it comes to a robust Club like Bay Creek, it may be said that members cannot live on golf alone. As one of the most visible and historic parts of the Club, though, it’s incredibly important that

“The Club is a living, breathing entity. It grows... it adapts to best serve its members.”
~ Bob Ewing, Club Manager

it is nothing short of superb. “The golf course condition is absolutely key to our members’ experience. With a course in ideal condition, the game is made even more enjoyable. And we have a big year planned with an exciting schedule,” Bob says. “There’s a fantastic variety of events for every skill level and interest.”

It isn’t just the tournaments and scrambles that members can enjoy. The Club offers fittings and golf clinics throughout the year, too. And the new golf simulator has been very popular in its first few months of use. The golf simulator was added at the end of last year and it has been incredibly well received. “The simulator is a great resource.

Spring 2024 | Issue 23

Not only is it a lot of fun to use, it’s a great tool for practice and improvement. You can get feedback on your swing—things like club speed, angle of attack, and ball trajectory—all with the objective of making you a better golfer. It’s a great way to hone your skills in a controlled environment. And of course, it’s available rain or shine—so it’s a great way to get in a few swings when the weather is less than desirable. For those who are looking to improve—which is probably all of us,” Bob laughs, “the simulator really helps refine your technique.”

Along with beloved annual tournaments like King and Bear, the Club is pleased to host a variety of lighthearted events again this year like the ‘can’t miss’ Big Hole Tournament, Cheeseburger in Paradise 9-hole scramble, Glow Putt tournaments and more. The Club also hosts a variety of worthy causes. “We’ll be doing charity scrambles—for causes like Els for Autism, Folds of Honor, and the Pink Ball,” says Bob. “Our members are incredibly conscientious and generous people and it’s a pleasure to be able to host these events.”

Bob and the maintenance team work year round to maintain a golf experience that will meet and exceed the expectation of all who play. “For our team, our greatest directive is to please our members. These are the friends and folks we see every day. Ensuring the best individual member’s experience is at the core of our work and we love what we do”.

In the Water, on the Preserve and Beyond

Bay Creek’s beauty extends in many breathtaking directions beyond the golf course. The vast Nature Preserve, the beaches, miles of winding trails, waterways and ponds…it’s an incredibly diverse natural wonderland. Many club events and offerings take place among Bay Creek’s natural beauty.

One of the favorites is the Bay Creek Bass Tournament. “This fun event is for members of all ages and it’s something you can enjoy for most of the year!” says Bob. “It’s all about fun and getting out onto the gorgeous property we have here at Bay Creek. There are specific ponds in the Preserve area that we’ve designated for the tournament. Any bass you catch in one of those ponds from April to end of December is fair game.”

“This is a catch and release event so you catch the fish, measure it, take a photo and then put it back in the water. Kids love it…and I’m sure the fish prefer this kind of tournament, too!” Bob laughs. “We enjoy doing events like this that are multigenerational. Bay Creek is a place for the whole family. The tournament starts in April so get your fishing poles ready!”

The Nature Preserve will be full of opportunity as we head into the spring months,” says Bob. “Ranger Stan will be leading walks and activities and the Club will bring back some of our favorite

events like the Bicycle Beer Flight. And yes, it’s as much fun as it sounds”!

Members enjoy a tasty tour of the Nature Preserve on bicycle, stopping at various scenic spots along the way for a tasting. The tour finishes off at the Coach House Tavern where a celebratory brew awaits their arrival.

“With additional event and fine dining space added at the Coach House Tavern, we have an incredible opportunity for new and greater experiences when it comes to Food & Beverage,” says Bob. “Bay Creek’s members are very much about community. We’re looking forward to utilizing this incredible new space to host and create a lot of enjoyable things this spring and all year.”

“It isn’t too early to be thinking about summer, too,” says Bob. “In fact, as Club Manager, my team and I work all year to prepare a summer season that our members and their guests will enjoy. As spring approaches, the Life Center will be home to more and more outdoor activity, too.”

“The Life Center offers a full schedule of fitness classes: Tai Chi, Pilates, Step Aerobics, spin classes…and that’s just a few of the activities,” Bob

says. “As part of our commitment to enhancing the fitness experience, we’ve made a significant expansion in our class offerings. We’re also welcome a new fitness instructor, Sierra Magee. She’ll be leading a new spin class and we’re looking forward to the energy she brings!”

“This year will offer another full spectrum of activities for all our members. We’ll be offering all of our tried-and-true favorites like the Member Guest tournament, tons of special events like gathering at the Tree of Life for music and fun, events within the Nature Preserve…as is our goal, we’ll offer something for everyone here at Bay Creek.”

“ Enjoy getting out and about here at Bay Creek with neighbors and friends this spring. I hope to see you out there. It’s going to be a great season!” ~ Bob Ewing

NATURE CORNER Ranger Stan WITH

BAY CREEK’S PRESERVE RANGER

Ranger Stan Osmolenski, our resident Bay Creek Naturalist, is excited to share updates on all things nature as Spring makes her much-anticipated arrival.

“We’re only just now headed into spring, but I along with our residents are already seeing the signs and feeling the excitement of the season,” says Stan.

“Bay Creek is full of ways to immerse yourself in the activities and renewal of spring. And we’re looking forward to an active season.”

Soundings

Join the Club!

“The Stewardship Club is a great way to become involved in the nature of things here at Bay Creek, and the club continues to grow in popularity,” Stan explains. This year we’re organizing the club into four unique interest groups, which are open for all to take part in. The growth of the club and residents’ interest in nature is an exciting thing.

“We’re taking note of the various skills and interests of our members so we can do even more. Our residents are incredibly dedicated and energetic. By identifying various interest groups, we’ll be able to direct that energy. This is great for our homeowners and, of course, nature!”

“Our Birding and Nesting Box group will be monitoring all the bluebird boxes along the trails on the Preserve. Currently, we have 16 bluebird boxes, two wood duck boxes, and a single kestrel box that is currently home to a resident owl,” Stan laughs. “They’ll also be doing general birding while traversing the trails and compiling information on what species they’re seeing and in what numbers they’re appearing.”

“A lot of this group’s work is focused on the bluebird boxes on the property. In our climate the eastern bluebird will brood sometimes three to four times a season.. After their chicks fledge, they go out and explore other spaces, though they still rely on their parents for food for some time. Once the fledglings have gone off on their own, our Birding team will make sure the boxes are cleaned and ready for the next bluebird family.”

Another Stewardship Club group is focused on Native Plantings. Last year Stan oversaw the planting of a thriving native wildflower area near Base Camp. This year, that area will be expanded to two or three more planting plots. The group will maintain these newly planted areas and ensure they’re thriving. These plots attract native wildlife and pollinators and offer many benefits beyond just their beauty.

The plantings will be a variety of natives, many quite showy and all beneficial to the Preserve. Stan and the group will be planting Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata - shown below right), Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca - shown below left), Black-eye Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), Virginia Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum), and Horsemint which is a type of bee balm (Mondarda punctata), along with several other species.

“We’ll be starting all these plants from seed. These are perennial plants that can self-seed going forward. As natives, they require less water and tending than other plantings, but they’ll still need maintenance to ensure they’re not crowded out by other more aggressive native and invasive plants,” says Stan. His work with native plantings and seeds occurs in other ways throughout the year, too. Perhaps the most anticipated is making ‘seed bombs’ during his kids’ nature programs— it’s a combo of soil, seeds, getting dirty and plenty of laughter!

Digging into nature preservation can take many forms. The Trail Maintenance group will be monitoring the Preserve trails and identifying any areas that need attention. “While large maintenance issues are handled by the Bay Creek maintenance staff, there are a lot of times when a vine, limb or small tree finds itself across a trail or overgrowing its bounds,” says Stan. “The trail group has a pretty neat mission…in fact, it’s a great hobby. They get out there in nature on our vast trail system to see if anything needs pruning. The Trail Maintenance team members enjoy getting exercise, often bringing their own clippers and helping out with a quick prune here and there.

The Stewardship Club Photography group will take photos of wildlife and the landscape. “We have seven photo points set up along the Preserve,” says Stan. “These are permanent posts set up where you place your phone in exactly the same spot and take a photo. Over time, these photos will offer us an amazing visual timeline of how the landscape is changing. It’s very much a citizen science thing,” he adds. “Photographers submit their photos via the Bay Creek app. On a property like Bay Creek with such an extensive history, it’s exciting to see and catalog changes in the landscape over the months and years. Many of these areas are dynamic habitats that can change quickly. Citizen science creates a record for the ages”.

The best thing about the Stewardship Club is there’s plenty of room for new neighbors to take part. No one need feel intimidated or ‘unqualified.’ Beginners are welcome and learning is always happening!

Nature Seen and Heard

“Bay Creek is special because anyone can enjoy nature here,” says Stan. “On the property now, we’re seeing holly in full bloom and dandelions popping up here and there across the Preserve.”

“We have a lot of freshwater habitats, which are pretty rare here on the Shore. In those environments, you’re going to see birds like the American Coot, the Bufflehead, Ring-necked Ducks, Redheads, Pied-billed Grebes, Black Ducks, Mallards, and Hooded Mergansers (shown below),” he explains. “We encourage residents to get out and see the rich variety of wildlife at Bay Creek.”

Stan offers these words of stewardship for those who explore: “Many of these species require very specific habitats and they don’t like disruption. So you’ll want to make sure you tread lightly around the pond and wetland areas”.

“Even more important to note, some of these bird species will leave permanently if they feel threatened. Luckily, our residents are largely nature lovers, too. It’s another thing that makes Bay Creek a really special place,” Stan says.

Sharing the Beauty

In February, Bay Creek hosted a two-part field trip for the 9th grade honors biology class of Norfolk Christian School, located across the Bay. “This was an ornithology project for a group of really great students. They came to Bay Creek to do some serious birding and that’s just what we did! We saw a great variety of birds over the two days, with some of our generous resident birders helping out,” says Stan. Bay Creek enjoys hosting school groups and opening up its incredible natural environment and its ecosystems for learning. “It’s a true outdoor classroom”.

Coming Up:

As spring inches ever closer, Ranger Stan will offer a robust schedule of activities and events. “We’ll be conducting a workshop on building nesting boxes. Participants can choose from three different varieties of bird box depending on where they want to install them and which species they’d like to attract. Each bird requires a different kind of box and we’ll be making boxes for birds, wood ducks, and owls.”

Paddles Up!

Kayaking is huge at Bay Creek among the community’s scenic waterways. This year, it will be even bigger! We are pleased to congratulate Ranger Stan on his certification by the American Canoe Association as a Level 2 Open Water kayak trainer. Now, members will be able to embark on even more involved paddles on Bay Creek’s many pristine waterways. Stan’s certification will not only benefit more advanced paddlers, but is ideally suited to help beginners, too. Stan is looking forward to teaching a variety of strokes and offer a wide array of paddling excursions—for exercise, citizen science, nature watching or just…

fun!

This season at Bay Creek will be one filled with all the joys and beauty this rare natural environment offers. Surrounded by the enormous beauty of the Bay, diverse habitats, and infinite places to discover and explore, there’s no better place to experience spring than Bay Creek. Ranger Stan invites residents, members, and guests to take a walk in the fresh spring air and see the community come to life, one blossom and birdsong at a time.

“It’s been a busy and exciting time,” Christian says. “We did a Super Bowl party with a special menu and had a great turnout and a lot of fun. Then, we had a Mardi Gras party right after that which was very well attended, with close to 60 people joining us for the fun,” he adds.

Guests enjoyed memorable Mardi Gras fare fresh from Christian’s kitchen. “We did jambalaya, red beans and andouille, oysters on the half shell…” He also created irresistible beignets along with chicory coffee a la New Orleans’ beloved Café Du Monde. And no Mardis Gras celebration would be complete without the legendary bananas foster created in homage to the famous Brennan’s on Bourbon Street.

On Valentine’s Day, Bay Creekers celebrated with a special four course menu curated by Chef Christian. These special offerings and events are part of why Bay Creek’s members are accustomed to the feeling of ‘right-at-home’ and ‘wow’ at the same time. Chef Christian and the entire Bay Creek team strike an incredible balance between triedand-true favorites and unique and exciting cuisine.

In the coming months as the Coach House kitchen renovations progress, Chef Christian will be curating a new menu that is sure to delight. “For the dinner aspect of the Coach House, I’m looking at adding some new offerings and experiences,” he says.

Soundings

‘High end’ can mean different things to different people but when it comes to food, Chef Christian, whose illustrious career has seen him leading exceptional venues across the country, is a master of striking the right balance. He says the re-imagined menu will continue to include plenty of fresh seafood.

“When people come to the Eastern Shore, the first thing they often think of is seafood,” Christian says. “We have the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

We’re fortunate…the seafood is great here. All our oysters are local, and most of the seafood is as well.”

Christian believes in using ‘as local as possible as often as possible’ and goes to great lengths to work with local and regional sources to do just that.

“Excellence is non-negotiable,” says Christian, “but consistency is key.” To that end, Christian will be attending premier food exhibitions this season to forge relationships with the industry’s best—from growers of the freshest produce to fine butcher shops.

As for the Coach House’s kitchen expansion, good things do indeed come to those who wait. Slated for a likely late spring completion, the Coach House renovation will offer an even better experience for members and their guests, including a newly expanded bar area and enhanced banquet and dining room space.

“We’re very excited about all of the enhancements,” says Christian. “It all comes down to creating the very best experience possible. Offering great food and memorable experiences is what we do best here at the Coach House and Bay Creek. We look forward to continuing to share all of that with our guests.”

It happens all the time—people visit Bay Creek for the first time and are captivated by its character, its lifestyle and its beauty. They return again and again. Eventually, many find themselves owning a home here.

Ray and Denyse ‘Denny’ Megginson discovered Bay Creek in much the same way—when Bay Creek had only just begun.

Virginia natives and long-time Virginia Beach residents who also have a home in Jupiter, Florida, Ray and Denny have long enjoyed the magic of Bay Creek. “We’ve been coming to Bay Creek, back and forth for 23 years,” says Ray.

Convenient to his financial business’ home office in Virginia Beach, Bay Creek was an easy escape from the traffic and crowds of the bustling Hampton Roads area.

“When you leave Virginia Beach and take that drive over the water, and you emerge from

the Bay Bridge tunnel, you’re truly in another world,” explains Denny. “You leave all the stress behind, and you find yourself in this immaculately beautiful place. Your senses become more alert and you’re taking in this beauty that’s all around you. There’s no other place like it and we’ve been all over the world.”

“We were one of the first families to join Bay Creek—when it was just a dirt road and a dream,” laughs Ray. “When we first joined, we bought a homesite in The Hollies and one in Marina Village near the restaurant on the water. My company and partners bought one of the first condos in The Fairways.”

Ray and Denny bought a second condo on the 11th hole and have loved it for many years. “We’ve been playing golf here forever,” says Ray. “Nearly all of my partners ended up coming over and buying homesites and building houses in Bay Creek. Many of my clients and friends have moved here, too.”

“Ray was the pied piper,” laughs Denny. “We obviously love Bay Creek!”

Ray and Denny are now in the process of building a home in Muirfield Bluffs with Simpson Builders. “We’ve often driven by that part of Bay Creek over the past 20 years, and I always said, ‘if a property ever goes up for sale on the Bluffs, we’ve got to get it’. This property has one of the most spectacular views of the golf course and Bay,” says Ray. “It’s incredible.”

Their home is scheduled for an end of summer completion. “ Mary-Dolph, Howard, and Page from Simpson Builders are just amazing,” says Ray.

“We’ve built many homes, and this has been the best and most fun of all,” smiles Ray. “Our kids have already said, ‘you’re not allowed to ever sell the Bay Creek House’—it’s going to be

our family legacy house.” Ray and Denny’s entire family loves the community. His son was married at Bay Creek and their grandchildren love visiting and feel right at home.

“This is one of my favorite spots in the world. The sunrises and sunsets, the golf course, walking on the nature preserve, there’s so much we just love at Bay Creek. It’s such a retreat,” says Denny. “And that’s what we’re calling our new house: ‘Bay Bluffs Retreat.’

“We do a lot of entertaining, and have so many friends here,” Denny explains. “We want to share

Bay Creek. We’re always talking about it with friends in Florida. We’re going to share the new house and let our friends experience Bay Creek and Cape Charles.

“Cape Charles is the quaintest little town,” says Denny. “It’s absolutely beautiful. We love to take our golf carts over there. It’s so much fun.”

“The store and restaurant owners are great, and we’ve become good friends with a lot them,” says Ray. “Cape Charles is doing a lot of good things with architectural preservation, too. And then there’s the cart community…it has really come alive. Our granddaughters love to take our golf cart into Cape Charles to explore.”

Congratulations, Ray and Denny, on Bay Bluffs

Retreat, your soon-to-be-complete ‘legacy house’ at Bay Creek!

Ray and Denny have enjoyed watching Bay Creek grow and flourish over the years. “I walked the course with Arnold Palmer when it opened,” recalls Ray. “…and with Jack Nicklaus when that course first opened.

Now after over two decades, scores of friends with whom they’ve shared the community, and too many wonderful memories to count, the magic that first attracted them to Bay Creek here on the sparkling Chesapeake Bay is still very much alive.

“I guess you could say we fell in love with the dream,” Denny smiles.

Ernest and Sonja Wells are just weeks away from completing their custombuilt lakeside retreat in Bay Creek. The prospect of living in the quaint town of Cape Charles wasn’t something the Washington, DC residents had ever considered. But during a perfectly timed visit to the community in 2021, they found themselves taken with the community’s peaceful lifestyle.

Their new home in Bay Creek isn’t the first home they’ve owned, but it’s certainly the most tranquil.

Earlier in her career, as the regional manager of a boutique with locations all along the Eastern Seaboard, Sonja fled DC’s high cost of living for Baltimore. “This was many moons ago,” Sonja smiles. “I was single at the time, and I bought a historic brownstone in Baltimore. I never envisioned I would end up there as long as I did

but, I met a boy, fell in love, got married…and we still have that house!”

Eventually, Sonja transitioned from retail to banking which ultimately brought the couple back to DC. She now serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer of City First Bank in Washington, DC. Ernest, a Baltimore native and former Marine, works as a Chief Engineer for the Department of the Navy.

Discovering Something New

Bay Creek wasn’t even on their radar until a co-worker of Sonja’s brought it up. “One of my co-workers, Marc Batchelor, who has owned at Bay Creek for over 16 years, kept saying to me, ‘you’ve got to go down to Bay Creek!’ He emailed me a link to their discovery visit and I just didn’t really consider it. But when Covid came and Ernest and I had been working remotely at home for so long, I thought, ‘we need to go somewhere and get out of this house!’”

So, she suggested to Ernest that they take a discovery visit to Bay Creek. “My husband claims I set him up if you let him tell it,” she laughs.

Sonja remembers the moment they first drove into Bay Creek in July of 2021. “I remember this woman was out walking and she waved and was very friendly. I’m also thinking, this is a golf cart community. So…I could retire here and drive around in a cart and not need a car? I liked that idea!

Creating the Perfect Home

During their visit, they explored, went to the Clubhouse, and drove around to get a feel for the neighborhoods.

“In Bayside Village, there were a stretch of homesites that backed up to a lake,” says Sonja. “I love the serenity of water so that area was appealing to me. We chose homesite #8 and settled in October 2021.”

Soon, Ernest and Sonja were ready to build. Bean Stringfellow, their realtor offered a few recommendations for builders. “We had an immediate connection with Terry Industries. I sent an email to Laura Zito, and she called me back that very night. We talked for several hours, and I knew we had found our builder,” says Sonja.

The couple wanted a modern coastal farmhouse style. Zito helped them find a home plan and introduced them to the architect who would customize it to be exactly what they wanted.

“We really took time in designing the home so it would fit how we live,” Sonja explains.

Inside, the home boasts modern elements and unique materials—from a stunning aluminum and wood staircase to a sleek glassed-in home office, elegant wood wall covering and dramatic, contemporary lighting. The modern coastal farmhouse exterior and custom interiors suit Sonja and Ernest’s lifestyle perfectly, by design. They plan to enjoy their Bay Creek home as their main residence when they retire. But for now, they’ll use it as a retreat and a vacation rental.

Another World

“When we get to our house, and go out back by the lake and it’s just silence,” says Sonja. “When we get there, we can just…breathe. It’s a place where you can completely tune out, and throw all the devices into the lake!” she laughs.

Ernest and Sonja like the calm and relaxation of living along the water. As for other recreational pursuits, they plan on enjoying golf, the beaches, and getting out in the community. “I like to walk, and Ernest is a runner, so we like the ability to get out and walk in the community and explore the nature trails,” she says. They’re also looking forward to the ease of traveling by golf cart.

“Getting a golf cart is probably next on our list!” Sonja says.

Their future ‘hometown’ of Cape Charles is known for heartily welcoming new people as Sonja quickly discovered. “We stayed at the Northampton Hotel during one of our visits. We by chance met the owner, Beth Walker, and

it wasn’t long before she was suggesting I join one of the committees in town,” Sonja recalls, laughing.

Though Cape Charles is different from any of the cities Ernest and Sonja have called home, it shares certain characteristics they love: “Our home in Baltimore is a brownstone that’s more than 100 years old,” says Sonja, “so the historic architecture of Cape Charles is appealing to us. We both love ‘historic’ but, technology and modern amenities are a must,” Sonja says.

Their new home in Bay Creek is a sophisticated blend of all these things. With its modern take on the historic farmhouse and gorgeously curated interiors, the Wells’ new home is truly a triumph.

Congratulations Ernest and Sonja, on your spectacular new home in Bayside Village. We look forward to seeing you at Bay Creek!

FINDING HISTORIC BEAUTY AND ENDLESS CHARM AT THE

Northampton Hotel

There’s something incredibly refreshing about arriving in Cape Charles—for a special visit, a vacation, or ‘just because’. With its colorful small-town charm, shady streets, friendly neighbors and beautiful Bay beaches, the town certainly has more than its fair share of ‘wow.’

For some visitors, their first official ‘welcome’ to Cape Charles is checking into the Northampton Hotel. Sitting gracefully among shady Crape Myrtle trees mere yards from the town’s lovely beach, the Northampton Hotel with its wide double porches is an elegant, historic accommodation that exudes Cape Charles charm and the Eastern Shore vibe. What makes the historic Northampton so special? We chatted with Tiffany Mohr, General Manager of the Northampton Hotel, to find out.

“The Northampton Hotel is unique. It was built in the 1910’s as a private residence and operated as a hotel in the 1930’s until the late ‘70’s. It has gorgeous historic architecture with charm to match. When guests step inside, they see an eclectic historic and modern blend— the renovated interior décor has a hip, midcentury vibe. Each guest room features new furnishings, drawing from that mid-century style,” says Tiffany. “It’s a really sophisticated and beautiful combination.”

Acquired by its current owners in 2014, The Northampton Hotel underwent an extensive two-and-ahalf-year renovation, meticulously restoring its grandeur while infusing it with modern amenities. Since its grand opening in May 2018, the hotel has become a beloved destination for travelers seeking a tranquil retreat by the Bay.

The hotel offers five handsome guest rooms, each with its own private bath. Every room has sweeping balconies, offering vast views of the harbor and endless blue Bay. It’s a seamless blend of ideal location, historic charm, and modern sophistication. The result is an ambiance that is stylish, inspiring, and totally relaxed. It’s an ideal place to stay.

“We really are just steps from the beach,” says Tiffany. “We offer beach chairs and umbrellas, so our guests can just walk over to the beach and enjoy it anytime they like.”

Spring 2024 | Issue 23

Their address at One Mason Avenue says it all—the hotel is wonderfully close to the water. How close? You can walk over and dip your toes in the Bay and make it back to the hotel’s front porch before your feet dry!

The best views in town and the hotel’s ‘hip meets historic’ style attracts many loyal guests. “We frequently host couples for special occasions or a weekend getaway,” Tiffany explains. “We also enjoy hosting groups—young professionals, retirees, eventgoers…there’s a lot of variety.”

The Northampton also accommodates guests who are visiting because they’re considering a move to Bay Creek. “We recently had a couple staying with us because they’re in the process of building their home in Bay Creek,” Tiffany says. “It’s very convenient.”

Tasteful and Tasty

One of the hotel’s highlights is its culinary offerings. Led by Chef Shelly Cusmina, the hotel Café offers an impressive menu with a full bar. Guests can enjoy memorable culinary delights, with standout brunch dishes like Shrimp and Grits and delectable crepes. Then there are the cocktails. From their ‘Winter Margarita’ to an incredible artisanal espresso martini, the bar serves up libations that perfectly complement the experience.

“We enjoy offering things that are really special for our guests,” says Tiffany. “Our espresso martinis are a favorite. We use these incredible locally roasted coffee beans— and it really does make a difference.”

They’re also known for their refreshing Mimosas. During the Cape Charles Fourth of July parade, which begins just outside the hotel, they set up a Mimosa table offering these fruity, festive delights. It’s a sparkling summer tradition not to be missed!

But perhaps the true magic of The Northampton Hotel is its sense of hospitality. Tiffany and her dedicated staff go above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels welcomed and at ease. Whether it’s offering local expertise about the area or accommodating events and making them truly special, their passion for hospitality comes through.
