WHAT’S IN A NAME?
One of the draws of a boutique hotel is its connection to the local culture. Wanting a concept that represented Greenville’s unique culture and history, we went back—way back—to the man who is known as “the Father of Greenville.” Vardry McBee (1775–1864) was a saddlemaker, merchant, farmer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He purchased 11,000 acres in 1815 that included what is now the heart of Greenville. He established a sawmill, ironworks, brick yard, and stone quarry, all essential ingredients for a nascent city. Along with industry, he was influential in bringing trade, transportation, and education to the area. And if that weren’t enough, he turned his home, Prospect Hill, into Greenville’s first hotel.

One of the extraordinary things about Vardry McBee was his entrepreneurial spirit that drove him to imagine a better future, and, to make it happen. That same spirit is alive and well today in Greenville. Business and industry have turned what was once a small mill town, into an emerging city committed to innovation, business, culture, family, and livability. This “spirit of Greenville” is the common thread in our history, from Vardry to the present day.
We will endeavor to make a sophisticated place for people to come and see what Greenville has to offer, a hospitable place for people to feel that warm Southern hospitality as they’re passing through, and a place for locals to gather and find one more reason that they love to call Greenville home. Like Vardry, we want to use our imaginations to create a better future and, in our own small way, make it happen. We want to create the best version of Modern City Living.
