giving back
celebrate the season of giving 5 ways to help those in need during the holidays
Giving is the true spirit of the holiday season. However, in addition to gift-giving in the traditional sense, there are other meaningful ways to make a difference in your community and give back to those in need—including the 3.5 million people who experience homelessness each year, according to the United States Census Bureau—during one of the most critical times of the year. By giving money, time or material items, or partaking in other small acts of kindness, you can spread holiday cheer and help instill a sense of giving in others. To get started, here are some ideas you can put into action this holiday season.
Donate to a Food Pantry Churches and food pantries are always in need of dona-
tions, and the holiday season is a great time to help provide a meal for someone who may not otherwise be able to eat. Canned goods and other non-perishable items like cereal, oatmeal, rice, peanut butter, canned tuna, and spices are often needed. Some pantries can also use non-edible items, such as soap and other toiletries, and simply donating money is always an option, as well.
Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen Because extended exposure to cold weather can be
dangerous, soup kitchens and homeless shelters are often more crowded during this time of year. While soup kitchens and other aid facilities often see an influx of volunteers during the holidays, most are still grateful for the extra hands to help serve a meal or assist with other tasks around the facilities.
Host a Coat Drive Providing clothing, specifically coats, for the less fortunate during the colder months is another way to assist those in your community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a warm winter coat is considered a “budget extra” for nearly 15 percent of Americans living in poverty. National nonprofit organization, One Warm Coat, is dedicated to providing a free, warm coat to any person in need. The organization has facilitated more than 27,000 coat drives nationwide and has a goal of collecting 1 million coats this winter in celebration of its 25th season of giving. Through its six-step process, the non-profit provides all the tools necessary to hold a coat drive and to distribute the coats in local communities where they were collected. Learn more about how you can get involved at www.onewarmcoat.org/ youcanhelp.
Attend a Benefit Event Concerts, theatrical performances, walks, and other ex-
hibits are often held during the holiday season with the proceeds going to benefit a local charity or service organization. Many community service clubs also offer benefit dinners or bake sales that can provide a positive impact for those in need in your area.
w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m
Adopt a Family There are many organizations that can help you sponsor a family in your area to help provide gifts and other necessities for over the holiday season. Most can provide you with a list of items each family member needs and wants to make shopping easier. december 2017

we chat with stephanie @ yarid’s
How long have you been with Yarid’s? I am in my ninth year. Yarid’s is a fantastic company. 2018 will be our 100th year. I think what is so unique is that it is almost impossible to find a small, locally-owned business that’s been open for 100 years. They are obviously doing something right. It’s exciting for me to be part of that. What impact do you hope to have in the lives of your customers? Trust is a big deal to me. Sometimes that means you may not get the sale necessarily, but they are going to come back because they trust you and what you’re telling them. We want our customers to go out, represent us in the community, and look good doing it. What styles are you most excited about for 2018? Everyone has been excited about 2018. We’ve had a couple of stale years style-wise in my opinion. This year, everything is luxe. Embroidery, velvet, and so many rich fabrics are showing up. Any heel goes. There is not necessarily a height or shape of heel that is more popular. It makes it wearable for everyone. What do you like to do to give back to the community, and what are the causes closest to your heart? Animal rescue takes up a large portion of my time. I have found that I really enjoy the hands-on, in the trenches volunteering best. I do media appearances for the SPCA, and I also volunteer with Franklin County Humane Society. I spend most of my time there actually rescuing animals and bringing them into the shelter. Do you have a quote that inspires you as a store manager? “I work hard so my dogs can have a better life.” Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My mom. She is a breast cancer survivor and she has somehow mastered the “live in the now.” She has the most positive attitude, she’s always having a good time, and she has great style. www.yarids.com

Mini Marbled Cherry Cheesecakes
18 chocolate cookies with white filling 2 pkgs (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Premium Cherry Fruit Filling, divided Heat oven to 350 F. Line muffin tins with 18 paper liners. Place one chocolate cookie in bottom of each paper liner. In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy. Fold in half of fruit filling. Fill each muffin liner about three-fourths full with mixture. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until done. Cool. Top each cheesecake with spoonful of remaining fruit filling.
Cinnamon Apple Pie 1 refrigerated pie crust 1 tablespoon butter, melted 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cans (21 ounces each) Lucky Leaf Premium Apple Fruit Filling 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, softened 1 cup flour 1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup powdered sugar, plus additional (optional) 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons milk, plus additional (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, unroll pie crust. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon. Roll up tightly and slice into 1/2-inch rounds, like miniature cinnamon rolls. Press miniature cinnamon rolls evenly into bottom and sides of 9-inch pie plate, making sure there are no spaces between rolls. Pour fruit filling on top of crust. In large bowl, using pastry blender, combine stick of butter, flour and brown sugar, until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple filling. Bake pie until top and crust are golden brown and filling is bubbling, about 40-45 minutes (cover top and crust with foil, if necessary, to prevent from getting too dark). Remove from oven and allow to cool. In small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and milk to form icing. Add more sugar or milk, if necessary, to reach desired consistency. Drizzle icing over cooled pie.

MEET THE
MAKERS
Written by Hayleigh Worgan

Minor Terry from Crooked Mountain Crafts
Minor Terry started crocheting at the age of five in a friend’s basement. From that time, she could make a square or scarf for anyone who needed it. When YouTube become more prevalent, she was able to watch videos on repeat to figure out how people were holding their hands, and her projects became more intricate, personal, and detailed. Today, she crochets just about everything from fuzzy stuffed animals and stroller blankets to coffee cozies and ear warmers. Her hobby has turned into a small business, Crooked Mountain Crafts, and has given her the opportunity to reach more clients with her work. She crochets wherever she goes, and often has more than one project in a bag by her side. “I can crochet and walk, and I’ve definitely been that person to pull it out at the bar during trivia night,” she laughs. “Anytime we are hanging out with friends, they know I’m going to have a crocheting project.” Like many knitters and crocheters, Minor has several projects “on the needles” at any given moment. Although this may seem like a large commitment, the reaction a person has when they receive something she has created makes the entire process worthwhile. “I sent my sister a blanket, and I asked if she could film one of her friends opening it since I wouldn’t be there to see it. One of my favorite memories is her joy as she unfolded it,” she explains. In addition to projects of her own choosing, Minor does a lot of custom creations. She’s crocheted blankets with specific colors, patterns, and even sports logos. Recently, a Mets blanket proved to be her most detailed design yet. “It’s a single stitch, so every single stitch had to be counted and done. I think that was my most challenging piece, but that isn’t to say it wasn’t fun. Once you get into the rhythm of it, it goes pretty quickly,” she says. Her clients are not limited to purchasing crocheted pieces. Minor’s boyfriend is an arborist, and he has designed copper trees that are available on her Etsy shop and at her craft shows. People use them for Christmas trees, jewelry trees, money trees, and talk pieces. With so many choices available, Crooked Mountain Crafts is a great place to find fun, personalized gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Minor spends her evenings stitching and making everything she sells, so you know your purchase is made with love and not mass-produced. If you still need a gift for someone on your list (or yourself!), be sure to check out her work. You can find Crooked Mountain Crafts at the Kazim Shrine Holiday Arts, Crafts & Vendor Show on December 9 from 10am-2pm, or online at www.etsy.com/shop/CrookedMtnCraft. Our monthly Meet the Makers feature is proudly sponsored by HomeTown Bank. Each month, we recognize local makers selling their unique handmade products. avoiding a financial doomsday How to build an emergency fund to protect against financial uncertainties
A major car repair, job loss, or medical emergency—all are scary realities and could lead to financial ruin unless you’re prepared. While these misfortunes are often unpredictable, there are things you can do to prevent financial catastrophes. With a new year on the horizon, now is the perfect time to get your emergency fund in place.
Build up your emergency fund. According to financial experts, you should have
three to six months worth of living expenses saved in an emergency fund. This should protect you in case of a job loss or another unexpected financial hardship. While that amount might seem daunting, you can start small. Make a goal of saving one month’s worth of living expenses in six months or a year. This will help boost confidence in your saving abilities while getting you to your goal.
Determine where to store your money. Your emergency fund needs to be readily available, so don’t tie it up in things like investment accounts. A high-yield savings account or a money market account is a good place to start. If it has checks or a debit card, it’s a safe bet. Set up an account that’s separate from your regular savings. Some even recommend getting an account at a different financial institution altogether. Consider setting up automatic deductions into that account so you don’t even need to think about it.
Find extra money. If you find it difficult to build up your emergency fund, look for other ways to contribute like putting your tax return toward your fund or selling items you no longer need or use. Closely examine your household budget and discover ways to save. Maybe it’s time to cancel subscriptions you don’t need (cable, magazines, or the gym), or cut down on eating out. And if you haven’t done this yet, make a household budget so you know exactly where every dollar you earn and spend is going.
Maintain your fund. It’s recommended that you visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning and to spot any problems before they become major issues. The same attention should be paid to your finances. Commit to regular check-ins to make sure you’re on track with building up your emergency fund. If you do and a financial disaster occurs, the impact will be much less devastating.

taking Care of yourself
Manage high blood pressure during the holidays
Managing blood pressure can be difficult, especially during the holidays and winter months. A change in routine, family visits, traveling, illness, holiday menus and financial concerns can all conspire to derail your best efforts at keeping chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, under control. If you are one of the millions of American adults with high blood pressure, it is vital to keep your blood pressure stable. Drastic changes can put you at risk for heart attack or stroke. Here are three ways to control your blood pressure throughout the holiday season from the American Heart Association:
Be Wary of Decongestants Decongestants are in
many over-the-counter cold and flu medications, but they have some harmful side effects. They can raise blood pressure and decrease the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. It’s best to use them for the shortest duration possible and avoid in severe or uncontrolled hypertension. Consider alternative therapies, such as nasal saline, intranasal corticosteroids, or antihistamines, as appropriate.
Keep Track of Medication The winter months tend to bring an increase in both heart attacks and strokes. According to research from the Journal of the American Heart Association, a 4.2 percent increase in heart-related deaths occurs away from a hospital from December 25 through January 7. “Factors like cold weather, sudden increase in activity like shoveling snow, stress and dietary indiscretion can contribute to a chain of events leading to more stress on the heart during the winter months, potentially triggerw w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m
ing a heart attack or other cardiac event,” says Jorge Plutzky, M.D., director of Preventive Cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a volunteer with the American Heart Association. It is vital to keep track of your medication and take it as prescribed by your doctor to decrease chances of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association’s Check Change Control Tracker is one way to monitor your health, as it allows you to set up text message reminders, text in blood pressure readings, connect with volunteers or providers, and receive messages from volunteers or providers.
Maintain Healthy Eating Habits The holidays can
be a bad influence on healthy eating habits. However, it is important to stay active during these times and continue eating healthy. While you are enjoying holiday feasts with family, be aware of sodium, often found in seasonal foods like bread, cheeses and prepared meats, which can increase blood pressure. Don’t feel like you can’t indulge a little, but make sure to incorporate healthy meals. Staying active while traveling can also be a challenge. Try bringing simple exercise equipment like a jump rope or resistance band with you. Consider walking to sights or restaurants nearby, or finding a local park or indoor walking path. earth girl wellness
My favorite convenience foods Written by Tina Hatcher Yes, I am putting it out into public knowledge that Earth Girl sometimes has to rely on the convenience of foods that come in a package. This is typically an extremely hectic and stressful time of the year. I spend more time in the car than I would like, and I often arrive home well after 8pm. I refuse to allow a crazy schedule side track my healthy eating, so I am always on the lookout for foods that I can eat straight from the package. Recent years have seen food manufacturers trying their hand at optimal health in a box. So here it goes: these are the three foods that you just might see Earth Girl munching on at the soccer field, in her car, or when she finally arrives home! My first favorite is a frozen product, the Luvo Bowl. The Luvo Bowl has over 15 different variations. Recipes such as So Cal Kale & Bean, Orange Mango Chicken, Roasted Vegetable Lasagna, and Roasted Cauliflower Mac & Cheese entice the tastebuds! Luvo’s promise is to provide plenty of fruits and veggies, whole grains and responsibly sourced proteins, while limiting sodium and added sugars. My personal favorite, the Quinoa & Veggie Enchilada Verde bowl, packs in 10 grams of protein, 37 grams of whole grains and a full cup of vegetables! At 290 calories per bowl, Earth Girl is left feeling full, and accomplished. After all, I just ate the easiest one cup of veggies of my day! Number two on my list of foods in a box comes from Tessemae’s. Tessemae’s Salad Kits are USDA Organic! Four different varieties including Sesame Ginger Greens, Power Kale Caesar, Spinach Bacon Ranch, and Sweet Kale Crunch all pack in the nutrition with ingredients such as chickpeas, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds. The kits contain around 400-450 calories and virtually no added sugars. These kits do have a little more sodium than Earth Girl would like, but compared to other packaged meals, the comparison makes Tessemae’s look like a “sodiumless” saint. The range of vitamins and minerals included in each package makes these salads a top performer in the nutrition world. Finally, a super and quick snack or side to any meal are Good Foods Chickpea and Quinoa Salad packs. Leading the charge with a gluten-free, dairyfree, vegan alternative to most convenience foods, Good Foods knows how to combine a great protein source with a variety of vegetables including carrots, green and red peppers. Earth Girl has been known to throw these packs on a bed of lettuce for added satiety. This manufacturer has perfected the art of combining a yummy combination of herbs so that the sodium and sugar content can remain low. At only 190 calories you can load up on 6 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and 21 grams of whole carbohydrates. Earth Girl recognizes that we all have moments, days, weeks or months of “survival” mode and we need to learn what healthy options are out in the vast jungle of heavily marketed convenience foods. Let me do a little of the dirty work for you! (Okay, it wasn’t so dirty—just really yummy!) I have compared hundreds of products and found the above top three to be in my grocery cart, my refrigerator or freezer, and in my cooler on a daily basis! Here’s to another meal “on the go” so you can be the best at what you do! Tina Hatcher is the Owner of Earth Girl Wellness, LLC. Her passion for overall wellness has allowed her to work in multiple disciplines from corrective exercise, sports performance and sports nutrition, weight loss, and nutritional counseling across all ages from children through the elderly for the last 25 years.
