Brilliant Weekly Scheduler

Commit30 planners w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

Staying on top of your goals for 2018 may seem a little overwhelming. However, with the right tools, you can focus on your priorities and take big steps toward achieving your goals. First, don’t forget that removing clutter from your life sets the stage for a truly clean slate. Occasionally, January allows us to spend a little extra time at home due to weather or holidays. Use that time wisely, and take on each room one by one. There really is something to be said for removing items that don’t bring you joy. If you’re feeling guilty about donating that sweater your mother gave you that you’ll never wear, or getting rid of cookware that you’ll never use, remember that the person who gave you that gift wanted to make you happy. Once the joy is gone, it is time for the item to find a new home as well. There is no room in your life for guilt over parting with material things. (Find these tips and more in the timeless book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo!) Okay. You’ve removed the clutter, now what? It is a lot easier to be successful when you set yourself up to stick to good habits. This isn’t about buying closet organizers or investing a small fortune in highlighters and journals (no judgement, we’ve all been there). It’s about finding what makes your routine more convenient and productive. We tested some new options on the market this year, and have compiled a list of our favorites. Check them out, and let us know what yours are on our Facebook page! Getting organized at the office can be a little tricky. No one likes those giant desk calendars that take up so much desk space, and even a regular calendar pinned to the wall can feel tacky. Fortunately, there are options if you’re looking to scale down. The Brilliant Weekly Scheduler by Mochithings is a small desk calendar that allows you to schedule up to 60 weeks! It features a memo area on the back side of each week for notes and other memorable events. If you’re reading this toward the end of January, don’t fear! The planner is dateless, so you can start whenever you’re ready! www.mochithings.com One of the most common mistakes people make is purchasing a planner on a whim to organize their schedule. It may work for a few days, maybe even a month, but soon you will be bored and looking for a new one. A planner should be january 2018

more like an extension of your phone. Someone should be able to open it up and get an idea of who you are as a person: your goals, the steps you are taking to reach those goals, and what your priorities look like. Commit30 planners encourage you to look at your goals and record how you are going to make them happen. It takes 21 days to create a new habit, and this planner can help you get there! Do you want to work out more? Attend yoga class? Try meditation? Spend at least 30 days allotting time to a new project? You can do all of these things and more by making a written commitment to yourself and using the format in a Commit30 planner to stick to it. The helpful guide pages and calendars are all condensed into a book small enough to fit in your bag, and the cover designs are beautiful! Their website has free PDFs so you can test drive the planner before you buy it! www.commit30.com Not ready to part with your phone? Technology can’t be helpful, but it is wise not to depend on it too much. If we had to choose one app that can transform your life, it would be Trello. The Trello app is great for project management at work, but it is also wonderful for the to-do list fanatic. Create lists for your home and work projects, and share them with friends, family, and coworkers! Instead of crossing items off your list, move them to a “Done” list or archive them. This is a great way to keep track of all that you’ve accomplished, and remember every step that remains before you reach your goal. Need more convincing? The app is free! www.trello.com You’ll notice that we have not included apps with reminders or alarms. While we believe in the value of gentle reminders on your Google calendar (appointments, schedules, etc.), we also think that our phone rules enough of our day already. Take a break, if you can, from your screen. There are too many distractions there anyway. A good calendar, a Hayleigh Worgan uses her voice as a writer and the clear space, and a functional planner can make a huge differeditor for Bella Magazine to help share the stories ence in your life! Cozy. The word itself evokes images of crackling fires and hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. Cold days are here and snow is on the horizon. Extra blankets are thrown over beds, winter decorations adorn the walls and scarves are a must. The season for all things cozy and warm has arrived. Simple and classic. That’s how Chandy Haskins of The Nifty Needles describes her knitting style. Taught at a young age by her oldest sister, the 24-year-old has turned a hobby into a business. Palettes of navy, gray, and cream come to life in her downtown historical Danville apartment. There Chandy creates puffy, cloud-like blankets using super soft bulky yarn. “I am definitely the cat lady of the family, known for my love of naps and carrying my own blanket to the movie theatre.” When she’s not knitting, Chandy is likely to be hiking, reading with her cat, or watching old movies. That is, if she’s not travelling the world. Website: www.theniftyneedles.etsy.com Instagram: @theniftyneedles

Hears to a New (Y)ear!

What parents need to know about preventing pediatric hearing loss Today, it seems almost impossible to avoid increased noise exposure–loud music, noisy toys, vehicles, snow blowers, TVs, drills, hairdryers and more! Especially during this time of year full of celebrations and gatherings, it is a good opportunity to make sure that the youngest members of your family are prepared for the additional noise exposure. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 5 million young people between ages 6 and 19 in the U.S. have suffered permanent damage to their hearing from noise exposure. Hearing is critical for a child’s safety and development of speech, listening, learning, and social skills, so it is important to start monitoring their hearing as early as possible. Your child may have passed a newborn screening prior to leaving the hospital, but parents should still continue to monitor and protect their hearing. Moreover, if an infant fails a screening, it is crucial to follow-up with additional hearing tests no later than three months of age. “Missed follow-up visits are rapidly becoming one of the most common reasons children with hearing loss miss out on critical interventions and support,” said Benjamin Cable, M.D., Pediatric Otolaryngologist with Carilion Clinic. “Those interventions work to keep a child on a normal developmental path.” As a parent or caregiver, be aware that exposing a child over time to anything louder than 85 decibels can cause damage to sensitive structures in the inner ear. “In practical terms,” explained Dr. Cable, “Any environment where the background noise would require raised voices or shouting to communicate could potentially be damaging to children who are exposed for more than short periods of time.” Noise-induced hearing loss is usually gradual and painless, but can be permanent. Once sensory nerve cells are damaged, they do not regenerate. As one might expect, the risk of permanent damage is higher with longer exposure. Damage also occurs more quickly with increasing loudness. There are also non-auditory consequences of repeated noise exposure, including increased stress and irritability with reduced relaxation and concentration.

Hearing loss, including noise induced loss, can be detected with a hearing test conducted by an audiologist. No child is too young for hearing testing. Agencies in the Roanoke Valley providing audiological services include: Carilion Clinic Otolaryngology 540-224-5170 Hearing Health Associates 540-774-4441 Jefferson Surgical Clinic 540-283-6023 The Hearing Clinic 540-553-8626 Roanoke Valley Speech & Hearing Center 540-343-0165 Visit www.ehdipals.org for a national web-based directory of facilities providing pediatric audiology services.

Starting the New Year off on the Right Foot! Cold weather is upon us. The days are shorter giving us the illusion we have fewer hours to accomplish all of the tasks at hand. Mornings have us snuggling further under the covers hoping for just a few more minutes of warmth before our feet hit the chilly ground. Winter seems to conspire against us and our efforts to stay active. It would be so easy to sit by a warm fire instead of heading off to the gym. So how can you create success this winter? Winter affects us all differently, but rest assured that if you feel a little less than motivated to keep up the fitness routine you established during the warmer weather months, you are not alone. When the sun was shining late into the evening and the mornings had you leaping out of bed to enjoy the day, it was easy to find the time and energy to slip in at least 30 minutes of exercise. Seasonal affective disorder alters our moods when we see less sunshine and don’t get out of the house as often. This can actually make it harder to keep moving, but maintaining high activity levels will actually help keep depression and anxiety at bay. To stay active you need to stack the deck in your favor. Modifying a few routines and trying different forms of exercise will help keep your blood pumping and your muscles flexing. Try the following three Earth Girl recommendations to keep your exercise high on the rise. A great first step is to find exercises you can complete at home. Poor road conditions and the desire to stay warm and out of billowing winds can keep us from heading to the gym. No expensive equipment is required unless you want to invest in something new. My go-to classes during the winter months are fitness videos. There are hundreds of options including DVDs, fun new apps, and live streaming! Try something new like salsa dancing or ballet. Create your vision of how awesome you must look while belly dancing in the privacy of your own home! Or master some new poses for yoga class next spring. Laying out adorable exercise outfits at the beginning of the week can inspire you to don your fitness finest and get moving. Plan what exercise you will do each day and coordinate it with a fun outfit. A new pair of leggings can put a smile on your face and make your legs look smashing. A tank top with a motivational phrase can push you to do that extra plank. Plus, seeing your workout clothes laid out before can create just enough guilt to force you to put them on and actually accomplish something! Finally, partner up with an exercise buddy. Your significant other, co-workers, friends and even four-legged buddies can hold you accountable to your plans. It’s harder to decide to skip your workout when someone is expecting you to show up to keep them accountable. Safety (and enjoyment) in numTina Hatcher is the owner of Earth Girl Wellness, LLC. It’s Blood Donor Month! Written by Taylor Ward

This month we are celebrating Blood Donor Month and recognizing the lifesaving powers of giving blood. Blood donations are important because they are the only way hospitals accumulate blood supplies for patients needing a blood transfusion. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood and each day around 44,000 blood donations are made. With just one blood donation, you can save up to three patients in need. While there are many health benefits for those who receive a blood transfusion, the same can be said for those who donate blood. For starters, donating blood is great for your cardiovascular health. By donating blood on a regular basis, you reduce the thickness of your blood, which in return removes the iron that would potentially oxidize in your blood. According to The Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, the elimination of this oxidative iron from the body reduces your risks of cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, and strokes. Also, with the reduction of iron in the bloodstream comes another benefit of donating blood; lower risks of cancers, such as liver, lung, colon, and throat cancers. Lastly, by donating blood you receive a free blood test. Upon donation, you must be tested to see if you are eligible to give blood based on what is found in your blood stream. You are tested for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases free of charge. Better your health and save a life this month by rolling up your sleeves and donating blood to your local hospital. For more details and to find out how and where you can give, visit www. redcross.org.

About Those Resolutions Simple ways to make healthy lifestyle choices

When it comes to creating a healthy lifestyle, some recommendations are simple, such as exercising regularly and eating right. Many people, however, don’t know how much exercise they should get or which foods are the best choices. They also may not realize there are other ways to take care of your body and mind to promote better overall health. Start on the path to healthier living with these tips from the wellness experts at Walgreens: Exercise regularly. The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity at least five days a week, and that’s because an active lifestyle can help you achieve far more than muscle mass or weight loss. Regular exercise can also contribute to mental well-being, and even something as simple as a walking break or two at work can provide health benefits. Eat well. The keys to a healthy diet are eating the right amount of calories for your activity level and eating a wide range of foods to ensure that you’re receiving all the nutrients your body needs. By prioritizing great taste and ingredient guidelines, such as minimizing hydrogenated oils, trans fats, and artificial ingredients, Walgreens Nice! products help take the guesswork out of making healthier choices. In an effort to simplify healthy living, the line’s packaging, products and ingredient standards were updated, and offerings now include organic and gluten-free options in addition to traditional baking goods and other general grocery items.

Manage stress. Between juggling a career, family and other commitments, it’s easy to find things to stress over. Practices such as meditation and yoga can help to better manage stress. Setting aside time for a favorite hobby can also help relieve stress and focus on an activity you enjoy. Aside from mental and emotional impacts, stress can also impact your physical health, so it’s important to identify coping mechanisms that reduce overall stress. Be social. Making time to socialize with friends and family is an important part of living a long and healthy life. Even if your schedule is packed, try to block out time at least once a week to spend with family and friends. Break bad habits. Whatever their nature, work to break bad habits by first acknowledging the problem then working to replace the negativity with alternatives that make a more positive impact on your life. Even a negative attitude can bring you down.

Get enough sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being, and can help improve your mental health, physical health, and quality of life. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours per night for adults and 9-11 hours for school-aged children. If you find sleep elusive, try implementing a bedtime routine to send signals to To discover more ways to make your body that it’s time to sleep, avoid screen time immediately before lights out and healthy lifestyle choices, visit eliminate caffeine after lunch. www.walgreens.com/nice page 20

Six Ways to Optimize Your Tax Refund Spend it or save it—make the most of those extra funds

According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the average taxpayer received a $3,000 refund in 2017. This chunk of change—depending on how you allocate it—could make a big impact on your bottom line. Before you’re tempted to spend it on impulse buys, consider these options for maximizing your tax refund.

1

Boost your emergency fund. Financial experts say you should have three to six months’ worth of living expenses saved in an emergency fund to protect yourself in case of a job loss or another unexpected financial hardship. Stashing your tax refund into an emergency fund could get you well on your way to reaching that dollar goal.

2

Pay off high-interest debt. Doing this results in an instant return on your investment because you’re saving yourself from paying interest to the lender. If you have several debts to tackle, aim for the one with the highest interest rate first. If you can’t pay off the entire balance, look into transferring the remaining debt onto something with a lower interest rate, like a credit card or personal loan.

3

Prepay your mortgage. Putting extra money toward your mortgage payment is a great way to save money over time. Use your tax refund to make one additional, full mortgage payment. If you do this every year, you could shave off thousands in interest, shorten your repayment years, and build equity faster.

4

Fund an investment account. If you’re new to investing, a great place to start is at your local financial institution. Many offer competitive, low-risk investment options like money market or share certificate accounts. You could also consider putting your tax refund toward a Roth or traditional IRA, which can be great ways to save for retirement.

5

Save for the future. The IRS allows you to split up your refund into several accounts. Consider putting some, or all, into a special savings account to help fund a future purchase, like a vacation or next year’s holiday gifts. This is also a great opportunity to jump-start a college savings fund for your child. Article courtesy of

6

Make home improvements. While your refund won’t cover an entire kitchen or bathroom remodel, you could make minor improvements such as painting cabinets, updating hardware, or installing a new backsplash. Look into replacing old appliances for more energy-efficient models or installing new windows to save on heating and cooling bills.

kindness matters Hope & New Opportunities at House of Bread Written by Kate Ericsson To break bread is probably one of the oldest human traditions that continues to ignite the spirit of sharing. In the Christian faith, it is symbolic of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. To make bread is the activity that unites women who are participating in job training sessions offered by the House of Bread, a new non-profit in Roanoke. The House of Bread was created in January 2017 to help formerly incarcerated women gain skills to strengthen their confidence and hope. Over the course of a six-week session, women learn new skills through hands on training in the Local Environmental Agricultural Project Kitchen (LEAP kitchen located in the West End) and gain spiritual development while baking and selling bread alongside volunteers from the community. In addition to learning basic kitchen and baking skills, the women in the program receive ServSafe food handler training, develop marketing and customer service skills, and partner one-on-one with mentors who shepherd them through a job search and resume building process. The students are given a $50 weekly educational stipend and are expected to attend a weekly class and sell bread with the organization once a week. They meet weekly with their mentors. Each session culminates with the ServSafe certification exam and a mock interview clinic where students practice their interviewing skills and receive feedback. The first clinic was staffed by attorneys, business leaders, and people in the restaurant industry. The inaugural session kicked off in October 2017. Most of the first session’s participants were chosen through Transitional Options for Women or Total Action for Progress. Six women began the program, and four graduated, all with ServSafe certifications. Alongside women from the community, the students learned how to bake a variety of breads and sold over 350 loaves, often selling out in an hour.

Kate is a reading specialist who currently tutors, writes, and supports literacy programs. She enjoys reading, swimming, practicing yoga, and trail running with her high energy Aussie. w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

What was the recipe for this success? The baking skills honed at home and shared in the LEAP kitchen by Lisa Goad (co-founder), the organizational finesse of former teacher and current seminary student Jordan Hertz (co-founder), and the vision of licensed professional counselor and seminary student Jen Brothers (co-founder). Sprinkle in a handful of motivated students, passionate volunteers and mentors, wide-ranging community support, and generous funding from church grants and private donations, and House of Bread was born. Brothers realistically anticipated some attrition, and it did happen in the case of one student, who relapsed after finding herself in an unsafe living situation. Her mentor did not give up, saying she wouldn’t leave her until she was ready to stand on her own two feet. She connected her mentee with resources to help her regain her footing and start a new job. Currently in its second session, the House of Bread has big projects on the rise. Transitional Options for Women, a recent recipient of a Roanoke Women’s Foundation grant, will open a coffee shop this January on 13th Avenue. It will be staffed by TOFW residents and House of Bread graduates. A former HOB student and current House Manager at TOFW will manage the shop. HOB plans to rent a space beside the coffee shop to host meetings, hold interviews, and allow for greater connectivity to the neighborhood and its residents. Brothers wants to hold the graduates together in community and is currently working on organizing weekly “soup nights” where program graduates, volunteers, and friends come together to break bread and share in storytelling and prayers, with local ministers presiding over a simple round table Communion service. House of Bread fills a unique niche in our community, offering hope to those who may have lost it along the way and the tools to rebuild a life and become a healthy and productive citizen. It also allows for the formation of friendships across neighborhood and socio-economic divides. House of Bread actively seeks volunteers, donations, and customers. The Most Popular Print of the Season! Written by Amanda Marshall of Pardon Muah

Amanda is a Kentucky native and author of the lifestyle blog Pardon Muah. She shares beauty products, motivational stories, and fab fashion finds weekly. www.pardonmuah.com w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

It’s hard to believe that January has already rolled around. Doesn’t it seem to come quicker every year?! It feels like yesterday I was putting my winter clothes away and here we are with winter coats and heavy knitted scarves again. But there are always fun ways to embrace cold weather attire and to still look chic. A new year is the perfect opportunity to try new fashion trends. This year, one of the biggest trends is a pop of print, specifically leopard. You may be asking, “How do I add print without looking overly trendy, especially if I dress for an office atmosphere most days?” “How do I wear leopard without leopard wearing me?” Great questions! Let me tell you how. I’ve personally, always had a soft spot for a splash of animal print. Fortunately for me, leopard is one of my favorites. It makes small appearances around my home and is present in many of the accessories I add into my daily attire. This year you’ll find it in all sorts of places and on all sorts of things. Sassy shoes, cozy cardigans, printed pillows, and even bags & beanies. You could easily wear an entire outfit solely made up of animal print if you really wanted... but let’s talk about how to seamlessly incorporate it without it overwhelming your look. I find it best to add a punch of print to a monochromatic or understated outfit. For example, in my look shown, I’m wearing a simple olive blouson sweater with a crossbody bag to match, paired with a classic skinny jean. I decided to add in my printed pieces with a fun beanie, some leopard loafers (the most popular shoe style of the season), and a tassel keychain. All are small additions to my attire and simply say, “I’m embracing the print of the season in a trendy way” without loudly screaming, “I love leopard!” Although, if you’d like to add more, shout away! You’ll also find that these pieces won’t be covered up with a coat so you’ll still be able to show them off in the cold Virginia weather. A few other suggestions for adding a feline flair: Try pairing a sleek black dress with black pumps and a leopard cardigan for work. Or add a leopard clutch to your ensemble. You can even wear a leopard ball cap on the weekend with a cute sweatshirt and leggings. Some of my favorite retailers embracing leopard print this season are Nordstrom, J.Crew, and Loft. I usually type “leopard” into the search bar to see what pops up. You’d be surprised how many options you’ll find! To find out more about this season’s hottest trends and for more outfit and beauty inspiration, head to my blog Pardon Muah (www.pardonmuah.com) or check out my Instagram @ pardonmuahinsta.

Life Award-winning interior designer Theresa Dorlini discusses priorities & perfection

Theresa Dorlini, co-founder of Circle Design Studio, takes meaningful connections seriously. As Principal Interior Designer and Creative Director, she works closely with both residential and commercial clients to “develop a cohesive design concept that reflects their personal style or branding.” She has made quite an impression on the design community over the course of her 20 year career, and has even taught design at James Madison University and Arizona State University. Her recent achievements include seven first place awards at the Virginia Interior Design Excellence Awards in Richmond. Many of these awards were the result of projects she and the Circle Design Studio team completed in the Roanoke area. Perhaps this recognition is due, in part, to the fact that Theresa and her team approach each new project with an open mind. They aren’t afraid of challenges like removing load-bearing walls, and they don’t shy away from difficult topics like decluttering. Their goal is to define the problems and find solutions that will change their clients’ lives for the better. page 30

Decluttering is only part of the equation in residential projects, but it is an important part. A recent a trend in America, it has taken some adjustment in a country known for consumerism. Theresa wants clients to find the things they’ve collected over time and see how they can fit those things into their space. However, she does not believe purchasing decor for the sake of having a lot of stuff. “There is only so much you can do by adding stuff to a space. I grew up in Asia, and there is something about minimalism that I really love,” she explains. “You are still able to collect things that mean something to you, but not over collect. The bones and interior architecture should set the stage, but the items you put in it should mean something to you.” In addition to using her design experience in projects, she also uses her observations as a mother to help create spaces that are stylish and functional for families. She and her husband/co-founder of Circle Design Studio, John Dorlini, are raising four children under the age of ten. Things aren’t always perfect, she admits, but it is possible to have quality family time and pursue professional ambitions. Teamwork, at home and at the office, makes things easier. Ultimately, it is also about being open, honest, and forgiving yourself for the speed bumps along the way. “We have a successful business, and I do work really hard. However, we are deliberate about how we include the kids. They come and do their homework here at the conference table after school,” she says. “You have to have support. I never want people to sit there and think, ‘You have it all together. Why don’t I have it all together?’” The fact that the balancing act between professional and personal is not always perfect is something that Theresa wants parents to feel more comfortable discussing. Even if you are not ready to redesign your home or business just yet, her blog is worth exploring for multiple reasons. In her new section, “Designer Mom,” Theresa is candid about her experiences as a professional and a parent, which is refreshing in an age where social media leads us to believe in a definition of perfection that does not always exist.
