Bella Outdoors Mandy Moore’s Mindful Tips for a Well-Balanced, Lively Summer

With plans of trips and relaxation on the horizon, it can be easy to give your wellness routine a vacation, too. Before you jet set off on your next adventure, take a moment to be consciously aware of how your mind and body may react to an overly active and jam-packed summer schedule. “As someone with a busy lifestyle, having an intentional, balanced wellness routine helps me be my best self for my job, my friends and my family,” said actress and wellness advocate Mandy Moore. Partnering with Nature’s Way to celebrate its 50th birthday, Moore shares a passion for paving a better way to wellness. While no single trick or technique guarantees well-rounded health, it’s really about establishing habits that work best for you and your lifestyle. Your routine may often change daily depending where you are on your wellness journey, but Moore shares thoughtful considerations to always keep in mind:

1. Start from Within. It’s important to understand the

connection between your mind and body. “I recognize it takes time, trust and baby steps, but the outcome is incredibly rewarding,” Moore said. “I’m a strong believer in the power of therapy and find my most important work is done during the moments when I feel like I’m operating at 100 percent.” She also recommends downloading a meditation app, calling a friend or writing in a journal to help balance a hectic summer schedule.

2. Seek New Ways to Nourish Your Body. Wellness goes beyond simply what you put on your plate. Listening to your body can help you go the extra mile, especially when you’re traveling, which is why Moore takes Alive! An “Energetic” Day at Floyd Energy Fest Saturday, July 13th will be the day and Chantilly Farm the

place to power up and turn on to renewable energy at Floyd Energy Fest. Sponsored by SustainFloyd and Apple Ridge Farm, the Floyd Energy Fest is an all-day event (9am-4pm) with speakers, exhibits, vendors, workshops, and great food. Hear experts present fascinating information on solarizing your home, using energy efficient systems, geothermal heating and cooling and how the climate is affecting our local ecology and community. Check out two Tesla electric cars, presented by Sustainable Blacksburg, and other electric vehicles including e-bikes from Active E-Bikes! Apple Ridge Farm will offer tours throughout the day to experience the E-base USA: Blue Ridge, an off-grid solar and windpowered classroom, housed in a 1917 boxcar donated by the National Railway Historical Society. There will be a fascinating nature walk and a kid zone for children with crafts and activities. SustainFloyd’s Solar Voltzwagon, a solar-powered wagon that provides electricity for many local events, will be on hand for visitors to see. Plenty, a local food bank and farm in the Floyd area, will offer a menu of local foods to purchase for both the morning and lunch. Bootleg BBQ and Red Rooster coffee will also be on-site and Cocoa Mia will cool off visitors with yummy ice pops. Take Your Workout Outdoors for a Fresh Boost

As temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, you might start taking your workouts outside more often. To ensure your body’s comfort and safety, you may need to refresh your fitness regimen. These tips can help you safely enjoy your summer workouts: Wear sweat-proof sunscreen. Protecting your skin is a year-round endeavor, but

when it’s hot outside, you’re more likely to lose the protection of sunscreen faster. Use a sunscreen that is designed to withstand your summer workout, whether it’s a good sweaty run or laps in a refreshing pool. Reapply a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 15 or higher regularly and be sure you’re using enough. Most people need a full ounce to cover their entire bodies.

Stay hydrated. In warmer weather, your body typically sweats at a higher rate, causing

you to lose key electrolytes, like salt and potassium, that are important to keeping your body properly hydrated. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids before, during and after a workout. According to an AAA Travel survey, nearly 100 million Americans—4 in 10 U.S. adults—are planning to take a family vacation in 2019, slightly more than last year, with road trips topping many vacationers’ plans. Before you depart from reality, take a moment to ensure you and your loved ones are fully prepared with these tips. Pack Your Patience

Be prepared for busy roads and long airport security lines throughout the summer. Bring books, games or music for the ride to keep kids and other passengers entertained. Pack healthy snacks for kids, especially if you can’t fit in a full meal while traveling, and don’t forget to pack a pillow as well as information on your destination.

Take Preventative Measures

Air travel, especially on international flights, can be stressful and lead to extra strain on your physical and psychological health. Fatigue, increased stress and mental changes have also been reported during and after long-distance flights, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Researching the perfect vacation takes work. Sure, it can be an exciting process. The world is at your fingertips. Just pull up Google and go, right? Maybe your search begins something like this: “Which Caribbean island is best for kids?” Or maybe: “How to plan a girls’ trip to Hawaii.” The information that pops up is relentlessly overwhelming, and how do you even know which websites to trust and whether you’re really getting the best deal? When planning a trip, American travelers log an average of 140 visits to travel sites before booking a vacation, according to Expedia Group. And many of those abandon their planning altogether because of the grunt work and uncertainty. Once you’re caught in the “I’ll plan it later” trap, six months have passed, and you’ve left vacation days on the table. We rely on accountants to file our taxes and realtors to find the perfect house. Why wouldn’t we entrust a travel specialist to plan our precious getaways? Navigating the travel landscape has become more and more complicated. Just choosing a destination is an involved and lengthy process. Yes, travel agents still exist! In fact, USA Today reported that travel agents are more than just agents; they are advocates for the traveler. Travel agents stand up for travelers at a time when travelers need a voice now more than ever. “A travel advisor is a value interpreter and can help you find the best ROI on your vacation dollar,” says Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales, trade support and services at Royal Caribbean International. If you’re not convinced, here are few more reasons you should consider an agent when planning your next getaway. Agents have a few tricks up their sleeves. Sure, booking a hotel online is an easy process. But you may be leaving offers on the table by not going through an agent. Agents oftentimes have access to special promotions or upgrades, including free breakfast, spa credits, or food and beverage packages. Agents anticipate the unexpected. Something you may not consider when planning a trip to another country may be whether the accommodations have air conditioning. Or, if your stay coincides with a major event you weren’t aware of. Or the fact that taxi cabs aren’t available at midnight when your flight arrives in a particular destination. These types of incidents can derail your vacation. Travel advisors have clout. resolved over the phone faster than you can. You can spend hours on hold or put in a call to your agent to handle specifics. They are working on your behalf. They can prepare you for international travel. Depending on the complexity of your vacation, will you need a visa or immunizations to enter another country? Oftentimes, your travel agent even knows before you do when your passport is set to expire. Agents will also educate you on the laws and customs of another country. Agents can simplify group travel. If you’ve ever been elected the “lead” on planning a group trip, you know how frustrating the process can become. Each traveler has a different request or payment schedule. Minds are changed midway through planning. Details are easily lost. Using an agent as your point person is wise choice. Bonus! They often have access to discounted group quotes given their relationships with suppliers. Good agents match a traveler with the vacation that’s right for them. One thing to remember is that travel agents live travel. They experience the destinations they recommend. They have access and connections that would take the average traveler a lifetime to build. And they use those connections to not only save their clients’ money, but more importantly to create unforgettable experiences with lasting memories. Soon, school begins and our kids enter another year of growing up and away from their childhood. But there’s something we can do. ​We can preserve that magic, those memories, for decades to come. We can give them sweet, life-filled photos that will remind them what it was like to be a kid. 5 Common Sunscreen Mistakes

Alarmingly, the AAD found that only about 20% of Americans use sunscreen on cloudy days. However, the sun emits harmful UV rays all year long. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate your skin. To protect your skin and reduce your risk of skin cancer, apply sunscreen every time you are outside, even on cloudy days.

4. Using an old bottle. The FDA requires

that all sunscreens retain their original strength for at least three years. Throw out your sunscreen if it’s expired or you’re unsure how long you’ve had it. In the future, if you buy a sunscreen that lacks an expiration date, write the purchase date directly on the bottle so that you know when to toss it out.

5. Relying solely on sunscreen. Since

Flag Kebab Cake 1 pint fresh, washed blackberries 12 wooden skewers 1 seedless watermelon, flesh cut into 1-inch cubes 1 angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (white part only) Dips, such as yogurt, chocolate, caramel or marshmallow (optional) Thread five blackberries on each of five skewers, followed by alternating watermelon and cake cubes. On remaining skewers, alternate watermelon and cake so first and last cubes are watermelon. Place skewers on platter; fruit and cake will create stars and stripes when lined properly. 2 medium cucumbers, seeded and diced 4 medium tomatoes, diced 1 medium red onion, diced 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint or parsley 2 tablespoons fat-free feta cheese, crumbled 2 medium limes, juice only 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon black pepper In bowl, stir cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, mint and feta. Cover and refrigerate 20 minutes. In small bowl, whisk lime juice, oil and pepper until well blended. Pour dressing over salad, tossing gently to coat. make memories—but preferably, without breaking the bank. Being on a budget shouldn’t mean staying home all summer. We’ve got four ideas to help you make this vacation season your most fun and frugal yet!

1. Say “yes” to a staycation!

A staycation could mean playing tourist in your own city. It could also mean a day trip to somewhere within driving distance where you can scratch the travel itch without paying for a hotel. It all depends on your budget! Either way, Virginia’s Blue Ridge Region has so much to offer when it comes to summer fun. There’s culture (think of all the historic sites in our area, like Monticello), plenty of festivals (like FloydFest and Ramble Weekend), and of course, more outdoorsy activities then you can shake a stick at (hiking the Blue Ridge, kayaking the James River, etc.).

2. Be an event VIP (Volunteering Important Person).

It may not get you in to Coachella, but at many festivals and events, volunteering is a great way to experience the fun for free. Regional festivals especially tend to rely on volunteers to help make the magic happen. Search your dream event’s website for volunteer opportunities. Don’t see any right away? Try contacting community groups that benefit from the event to ask if there is a need for volunteers there instead!

3. Embrace your inner nomad.

This one is for the more free-spirited among us. But if “gypsy soul” is more than just an Instagram aesthetic to you, you can score some great deals by being adaptable with your dates and page 30

even your destinations. Know where you want to go but have some flexibility with your plans? Shop for flights using search options like “flex dates” and “nearby airports” to find the cheapest choice. Use the “Anywhere” search option on Adioso.com, the “Everywhere” search option on Skyscanner.com, or the “KAYAK Explore” feature on Kayak.com if you just want to get away on a budget and are open to considering various locales. It’s not quite as poetic as going wherever the wind takes you, but it’s pretty close (and almost as cheap).

4. Get ready for more fun next year!

If your ultimate bucket list vacation wasn’t in the budget for 2019, try not to be too disappointed. That just gives you something to look forward to for next year! Start planning now to make your dream destination a reality. Two tips: one, you can often get a better price on event tickets and hotel rooms when you purchase them in advance; and two, start budgeting now with a dedicated savings account. Set up your account, name it something like “Caribbean cruise” or “Roman holiday” to keep your eyes on the prize, and automate monthly deposits from your paycheck for painless saving.
