Bella Outdoors Mandy Moore’s Mindful Tips for a Well-Balanced, Lively Summer
With plans of trips and relaxation on the horizon, it can be easy to give your wellness routine a vacation, too. Before you jet set off on your next adventure, take a moment to be consciously aware of how your mind and body may react to an overly active and jam-packed summer schedule. “As someone with a busy lifestyle, having an intentional, balanced wellness routine helps me be my best self for my job, my friends and my family,” said actress and wellness advocate Mandy Moore. Partnering with Nature’s Way to celebrate its 50th birthday, Moore shares a passion for paving a better way to wellness. While no single trick or technique guarantees well-rounded health, it’s really about establishing habits that work best for you and your lifestyle. Your routine may often change daily depending where you are on your wellness journey, but Moore shares thoughtful considerations to always keep in mind:
1. Start from Within. It’s important to understand the
connection between your mind and body. “I recognize it takes time, trust and baby steps, but the outcome is incredibly rewarding,” Moore said. “I’m a strong believer in the power of therapy and find my most important work is done during the moments when I feel like I’m operating at 100 percent.” She also recommends downloading a meditation app, calling a friend or writing in a journal to help balance a hectic summer schedule.
2. Seek New Ways to Nourish Your Body. Wellness goes beyond simply what you put on your plate. Listening to your body can help you go the extra mile, especially when you’re traveling, which is why Moore takes Alive! Women’s Energy from Nature’s Way, packed with 16 different health-benefiting vitamins and minerals. Drinking water-based beverages is a big piece of her wellness routine, as well. She loves relaxing with tea sourced from around the globe and drinking water with liquid chlorophyll for an internal refresher. 3. Breathe in the Sights, Scents & Sounds of Nature. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s important to take time to
breathe; to take in nature’s true beauty. Watch a sunset, walk through a park or get away from the city lights so you can really see the stars shine. Be more proactive this summer and immerse yourself in environments that truly allow you to feel renewed. Moore loves to go hiking and walks her dogs, Jackson and Joni, each day. “There’s something that’s innately healing about feeling connected to the ground—feeling grounded, literally, to the world around you,” Moore said.
4. Unplug to Recharge. Even if
your schedule constantly keeps you on the go, it’s important for your mental health and wellbeing to take time to unplug and find different ways to clear your mind. “Take moments to step away from the computer, tablet or phone—put it in the other room, let it charge and do something else constructive for your brain,” Moore said. “Pick up a book, put on an album, call a friend, light a candle and decompress. I’m a big proponent of smell; sense therapy is really helpful for me. One of the first things I do when I get home is light a candle.” w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m
Cool Off with Chlorofresh Servings: 1
8 ounces lemon water 1 squeeze fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1 pinch salt 1 teaspoon Nature’s Way Chlorofresh Liquid Chlorophyll (unflavored) Mix lemon water, lemon juice, ground ginger, salt and unflavored chlorophyll liquid. Serve over ice.

Take Your Workout Outdoors for a Fresh Boost
As temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, you might start taking your workouts outside more often. To ensure your body’s comfort and safety, you may need to refresh your fitness regimen. These tips can help you safely enjoy your summer workouts: Wear sweat-proof sunscreen. Protecting your skin is a year-round endeavor, but
when it’s hot outside, you’re more likely to lose the protection of sunscreen faster. Use a sunscreen that is designed to withstand your summer workout, whether it’s a good sweaty run or laps in a refreshing pool. Reapply a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 15 or higher regularly and be sure you’re using enough. Most people need a full ounce to cover their entire bodies.
Stay hydrated. In warmer weather, your body typically sweats at a higher rate, causing
you to lose key electrolytes, like salt and potassium, that are important to keeping your body properly hydrated. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids before, during and after a workout. To mix up your hydration plan, consider choosing a water formulated for fitness, like Propel Vitamin Boost, which is enhanced with 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E and electrolytes to help replace what is lost in sweat.
Find a workout buddy. There’s power–and safety–in numbers. Whether you grab a friend, coworker or pet, try exploring new places to work out for a change of scenery. Having a buddy by your side not only offers security, but also a boost of motivation. Together, you can work toward a common goal, keep each other accountable and encourage each other to crank up the intensity. Time workouts for cooler periods. Avoid exercising during the heat of
the day. Instead, opt for morning or evening workouts and be conscious of high humidity levels, which can adversely affect your respiration and lead to overheating. It’s also a good idea to acclimate to the warmer temperatures by starting with a brief workout and gradually increasing the duration over the span of a week or two.
Wear appropriate clothes. Switching to summer attire isn’t just about wearing less material; you also need to pay attention to the fabric you wear. The appropriate fit may vary depending on your chosen activity, but generally, breathable fabric in lighter colors is ideal. Visit www.propelwater.com to learn more about safely hydrating to tackle warm weather workouts.

Simple Summer Travel Advice A Few Tips to Ensure a Smooth and Fun Trip
According to an AAA Travel survey, nearly 100 million Americans—4 in 10 U.S. adults—are planning to take a family vacation in 2019, slightly more than last year, with road trips topping many vacationers’ plans. Before you depart from reality, take a moment to ensure you and your loved ones are fully prepared with these tips. Pack Your Patience
Be prepared for busy roads and long airport security lines throughout the summer. Bring books, games or music for the ride to keep kids and other passengers entertained. Pack healthy snacks for kids, especially if you can’t fit in a full meal while traveling, and don’t forget to pack a pillow as well as information on your destination.
Take Preventative Measures
Air travel, especially on international flights, can be stressful and lead to extra strain on your physical and psychological health. Fatigue, increased stress and mental changes have also been reported during and after long-distance flights, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Take time to make sure your immune system is functioning at its best. w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m
A study published in Nutrients, found air travelers taking capsules containing elderberry extract before and during their trips experienced an improved immune system response versus travelers who were given a placebo. Elderberry extract is available in a variety of travelfriendly formats. For example, Nature’s Way, a pioneer in the health industry, offers Sambucus Elderberry Zinc Lozenges and Gummies, which can be found at most health and wellness retailers. (www.naturesway.com) Be sure to ask your health care provider for advice when adding a new supplement to your diet.
Break a (Free) Sweat
These days, many hotels and resorts offer on-site fitness rooms, but they may not always have your preferred equipment and machinery. If you decide to hit the gym, you may be able to score a free day pass. A lot of chain gyms, and even some local operations, may offer free, one-day trial experiences. With a little research in advance of your trip, you can ensure your fitness routine doesn’t go out the window simply because you’re away from home.

Yes, Virginia, Use a Travel Agent!
The Advantages of Using a Personal Travel Agent for Travel Planning Written by WENDY MAXEY
Researching the perfect vacation takes work. Sure, it can be an exciting process. The world is at your fingertips. Just pull up Google and go, right? Maybe your search begins something like this: “Which Caribbean island is best for kids?” Or maybe: “How to plan a girls’ trip to Hawaii.” The information that pops up is relentlessly overwhelming, and how do you even know which websites to trust and whether you’re really getting the best deal? When planning a trip, American travelers log an average of 140 visits to travel sites before booking a vacation, according to Expedia Group. And many of those abandon their planning altogether because of the grunt work and uncertainty. Once you’re caught in the “I’ll plan it later” trap, six months have passed, and you’ve left vacation days on the table. We rely on accountants to file our taxes and realtors to find the perfect house. Why wouldn’t we entrust a travel specialist to plan our precious getaways? Navigating the travel landscape has become more and more complicated. Just choosing a destination is an involved and lengthy process. Yes, travel agents still exist! In fact, USA Today reported that travel agents are more than just agents; they are advocates for the traveler. Travel agents stand up for travelers at a time when travelers need a voice now more than ever. “A travel advisor is a value interpreter and can help you find the best ROI on your vacation dollar,” says Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales, trade support and services at Royal Caribbean International. If you’re not convinced, here are few more reasons you should consider an agent when planning your next getaway. Agents have a few tricks up their sleeves. Sure, booking a hotel online is an easy process. But you may be leaving offers on the table by not going through an agent. Agents oftentimes have access to special promotions or upgrades, including free breakfast, spa credits, or food and beverage packages. Agents anticipate the unexpected. Something you may not consider when planning a trip to another country may be whether the accommodations have air conditioning. Or, if your stay coincides with a major event you weren’t aware of. Or the fact that taxi cabs aren’t available at midnight when your flight arrives in a particular destination. These types of incidents can derail your vacation. Travel advisors have clout. At any given time, they can get an issue w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m
resolved over the phone faster than you can. You can spend hours on hold or put in a call to your agent to handle specifics. They are working on your behalf. They can prepare you for international travel. Depending on the complexity of your vacation, will you need a visa or immunizations to enter another country? Oftentimes, your travel agent even knows before you do when your passport is set to expire. Agents will also educate you on the laws and customs of another country. Agents can simplify group travel. If you’ve ever been elected the “lead” on planning a group trip, you know how frustrating the process can become. Each traveler has a different request or payment schedule. Minds are changed midway through planning. Details are easily lost. Using an agent as your point person is wise choice. Bonus! They often have access to discounted group quotes given their relationships with suppliers. Good agents match a traveler with the vacation that’s right for them. One thing to remember is that travel agents live travel. They experience the destinations they recommend. They have access and connections that would take the average traveler a lifetime to build. And they use those connections to not only save their clients’ money, but more importantly to create unforgettable experiences with lasting memories. Wendy’s love of travel started at an early age with family beach vacations. Early on in her career she was managing editor of a hotel reservations website. She was afforded the opportunity to visit some amazing places—from the Cayman Islands to Aspen, Colorado (and several spots in between). She has a healthy obsession with the Caribbean islands, and has visited several, both by cruise and resort stay. Wendy is co-owner of Star City Travel, a Roanoke-based Dream Vacations franchise. Challenge!
20 Moments You Must Capture of Your Family This Season
There’s something magical about summer.
Maybe it’s the the glow from a jar of fireflies, or the thrill of running through a cold backyard sprinkler. Maybe its magic comes from the fact that it’s so fleeting. Soon, school begins and our kids enter another year of growing up and away from their childhood. But there’s something we can do. We can preserve that magic, those memories, for decades to come. We can give them sweet, life-filled photos that will remind them what it was like to be a kid. As you adventure through the rest of summer, see how many of these must-capture moments you can check off (and then print them!):
1
Hot summer days should be marked by multiple popsicle breaks. Document the happiness that only an ice-cold treat can bring. Bonus points if there’s an ice cream truck in the background!
2 3 4
Test your photo skills by capturing the perfect sparkler shot. Hint: Lock the focal point on the sparkler and decrease the brightness. If you’re headed on a road trip, document the kids making the best of it in the back seat.
Of course you’re already taking photos of your summer vacation, but how can you make things more interesting? Challenge yourself to find different angles, capture emotion, and tell the whole story.
5
Document a quiet moment. Maybe the kids are crafting, reading, or napping by the pool. Soak it in and create a memory you can return to on hectic days.
6
Make sure you’re in the photos, too, momma. Remember to pass the camera and get a photo of just you and your babies (no matter how big they are).
7 8
Summer is the perfect opportunity to try something new with your family. Document the experience—including any funny fails! Reuniting with family this month? Make sure you have your camera ready for all the big hugs and little moments. And don’t forget a shot with grandma, grandpa, and all the grandkids!

Laughter should be the official song of summer, don’t you think? Capture your kids mid-chuckle—when you look at the photo months from now, you’ll almost be able to hear it. 5 Common Sunscreen Mistakes
Article courtesy AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY
3. Applying only in sunny weather.
Alarmingly, the AAD found that only about 20% of Americans use sunscreen on cloudy days. However, the sun emits harmful UV rays all year long. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate your skin. To protect your skin and reduce your risk of skin cancer, apply sunscreen every time you are outside, even on cloudy days.
4. Using an old bottle. The FDA requires
that all sunscreens retain their original strength for at least three years. Throw out your sunscreen if it’s expired or you’re unsure how long you’ve had it. In the future, if you buy a sunscreen that lacks an expiration date, write the purchase date directly on the bottle so that you know when to toss it out.
5. Relying solely on sunscreen. Since
no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UV rays, it’s also important to seek shade and wear protective clothing, including a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States,
“Sunscreen is the most important skin care product you can use, as it helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer affecting one in five Americans in their lifetime. However, to fully cover their body, most adults need about one ounce of sunscreen—or enough to fill a shot glass. Apply enough sunscreen to cover all skin that isn’t covered by clothing. Bella Eats Sweet, Refreshing Summer Snacks Featuring Our Classic Favorite Fruit, Watermelon!
There’s no time like a hot summer picnic to let your
patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit—watermelon—are the perfect solution for nearly any summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. However, nostalgia isn’t the only reason adults are just as likely to gravitate toward watermelon at a summer event. Its sweet, cool and refreshing flavor also makes it a favorite for all ages. From a practical standpoint, watermelon is also quite portable, versatile and easy to serve, and with a composition of 92% water, it’s a simple way to sneak in some extra hydration on a hot day. Another benefit is its value; watermelon is one of the best values in the produce section among fruit, and just one watermelon can feed up to three dozen people. Serving watermelon at a party can be as simple as slicing wedges, or you can prepare a dish such as: • A fruit basket, with the rind serving as a colorful bowl to hold the watermelon and other fresh fruits. • Creamy parfaits, perfect for a summery brunch or alternative to more traditional desserts. • A creatively colorful and patriotic “cake” that makes for a tasty centerpiece on the dessert table.
Flag Kebab Cake 1 pint fresh, washed blackberries 12 wooden skewers 1 seedless watermelon, flesh cut into 1-inch cubes 1 angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (white part only) Dips, such as yogurt, chocolate, caramel or marshmallow (optional) Thread five blackberries on each of five skewers, followed by alternating watermelon and cake cubes. On remaining skewers, alternate watermelon and cake so first and last cubes are watermelon. Place skewers on platter; fruit and cake will create stars and stripes when lined properly. Serve with dips, if desired.
Find more ideas for incorporating watermelon into your summer festivities at www.watermelon.org.
Red, White & Blue Watermelon Parfait 1 cup blueberries 1 container (6 ounces) Greek yogurt (vanilla, lemon or coconut) 1 cup watermelon, plus three pieces diced watermelon Whipped cream, for serving In pint canning jar, layer blueberries, yogurt and 1 cup watermelon. Top with whipped cream and garnish with three diced watermelon pieces. Note: To make ahead or make thicker, drain Greek yogurt on paper towels to absorb some liquid. w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

Sensational Summer Salads Plant-Forward Nutrition by Adding Fruits & Veggies to Meals
Adding more fruits and vegetables is one of the simplest ways to
make at-home meals healthier for your family. Focusing your plate on more of the good stuff—Âvegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based proteins, lean animal proteins and fish—can help you cut back on the not-so-good stuff, including refined carbohydrates, added sugars, processed meats, sodium and saturated and trans fats, according to the American Heart Association. While some may think meat makes the meal and it can be part of an overall healthy eating pattern, a survey from Aramark, the largest U.S. based food service company, found many people want to ease up on meat consumption, and 2 out of 3 want to eat more fruits and vegetables. The company made sweeping changes to incorporate more plants into its menus, resulting in meals with fewer calories, less saturated fat and reduced sodium. Punching up the plants on your plate can lead to better nutrition in your house, too. Try putting vegetables and fruits center-stage with these heart-healthy salads. To help encourage healthier communities, the American Heart Association and Aramark have made it simple for you to learn better nutrition and lifestyle habits and to share that information. For more recipes, tips and resources, visit www.heart.org/healthyforlife.

Booker T. Jones
Continuing with its mission to enrich the community, Jefferson Center is pleased to present its 2019-2020 Performance Season. The curated season consists of world-touring artists, GRAMMY® award winners, and musicians who’ve influenced the musical landscape of today, including genre-defying Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, bluegrass legend Del McCoury (celebrating his 80th birthday), and soul music pioneer, Booker T. Jones. “Along with our commitment to provide a place for community and extend an array of educational opportunities through our Music Lab, we’re proud to have contributed to the cultural landscape of our region.” said Executive Director, Cyrus Pace. “And that contribution has been possible because of you, our Jefferson Center Family.” We’re excited to see Kathy Mattea perform April 2, 2020. Hailed as one of Nashville’s finest son interpreters, Kathy has enjoyed the kid of success many artists only dream of: two GRAMMY wins, four CMA Awards, four #1 country singles and five gold albums (plus a platinum collection of her greatest hits). Mark your calendars to see Quiana Lynell. Lynell is known as a wise, heartfelt, warm vocalist that is singular in its soul, intensity, ecstasy and outright spiritual courage. Classical training and gospel upbringing lead to a jazz singer who is most importantly a storyteller, she performs on Jefferson Center’s stage in October. The season will also introduce some new acts to the Roanoke Valley and tickets are on sale now! Ticket purchase options range from subscription packages to their single tickets. Subscribing is the best was to enjoy a curated selection of performing arts during the entire season and you’ll receive a 15% discount! Don’t want to make a full-season commitment? Check out their new discounted purchasing option called the Explorer Package (buy 3, get a 10% discount) and create your own experience with a 10% discount! Save Smarter
4 Ideas for Financially Savvy Summer Fun Being on a Budget Shouldn’t Mean Staying Home all Summer
Provided by MEMBER ONE FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
Summer is in full swing, and you’re ready to
make memories—but preferably, without breaking the bank. Being on a budget shouldn’t mean staying home all summer. We’ve got four ideas to help you make this vacation season your most fun and frugal yet!
1. Say “yes” to a staycation!
A staycation could mean playing tourist in your own city. It could also mean a day trip to somewhere within driving distance where you can scratch the travel itch without paying for a hotel. It all depends on your budget! Either way, Virginia’s Blue Ridge Region has so much to offer when it comes to summer fun. There’s culture (think of all the historic sites in our area, like Monticello), plenty of festivals (like FloydFest and Ramble Weekend), and of course, more outdoorsy activities then you can shake a stick at (hiking the Blue Ridge, kayaking the James River, etc.).
2. Be an event VIP (Volunteering Important Person).
It may not get you in to Coachella, but at many festivals and events, volunteering is a great way to experience the fun for free. Regional festivals especially tend to rely on volunteers to help make the magic happen. Search your dream event’s website for volunteer opportunities. Don’t see any right away? Try contacting community groups that benefit from the event to ask if there is a need for volunteers there instead!
3. Embrace your inner nomad.
This one is for the more free-spirited among us. But if “gypsy soul” is more than just an Instagram aesthetic to you, you can score some great deals by being adaptable with your dates and page 30

even your destinations. Know where you want to go but have some flexibility with your plans? Shop for flights using search options like “flex dates” and “nearby airports” to find the cheapest choice. Use the “Anywhere” search option on Adioso.com, the “Everywhere” search option on Skyscanner.com, or the “KAYAK Explore” feature on Kayak.com if you just want to get away on a budget and are open to considering various locales. It’s not quite as poetic as going wherever the wind takes you, but it’s pretty close (and almost as cheap).
4. Get ready for more fun next year!
If your ultimate bucket list vacation wasn’t in the budget for 2019, try not to be too disappointed. That just gives you something to look forward to for next year! Start planning now to make your dream destination a reality. Two tips: one, you can often get a better price on event tickets and hotel rooms when you purchase them in advance; and two, start budgeting now with a dedicated savings account. Set up your account, name it something like “Caribbean cruise” or “Roman holiday” to keep your eyes on the prize, and automate monthly deposits from your paycheck for painless saving. You’ll be booking that 2020 flight—without busting your budget—before you know it. Article courtesy of
