skincare for colder weather A few helpful tips to keep your skin looking its best! Fall is flying by, and winter is just around the corner! As the weather gets cooler, don’t fall behind on your skin care. Make your skin as merry and bright as the holiday season by incorporating the following into your routine:

Hydration

We enjoy a cocktail and a second (or third!) cup of coffee as much as you do—but make sure you are drinking plenty of water when you indulge! The things we eat and drink during the holidays often wreak havoc on our skin. Do yourself a favor and drink (at least!) eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day this winter. Healthy skin tone starts from the inside.

Moisturize

Our favorite moisturizer is MAC’s Lightful C Marine Bright Formula Softening Lotion. This SPF 30 moisturizer pulls double duty by soothing and offering broad spectrum sun protection, helping to repair your skin over time. It is also tinted, so you can use it as a foundation if you prefer. After using it all summer, we discovered that it not only lasts longer than any foundation we’ve used before (due to how little you actually have to use each time), but it actually makes a huge difference when used on a regular basis!

Vitamins

Eating healthy is a great way to encourage your skin to stay bright and blemish-free. However, this time of year is not known for presenting us with healthy choices. Taking a multivitamin will help your body stay ready to fight off colds this winter, and it will help counter some of the damage to your skin. We like to make sure we have plenty of vitamin E to help with protection against the sun and treat skin inflammation. Talk to your doctor about which vitamins are right for you.

SPF

Speaking of sun protection, don’t let the cold temperatures fool you. If the sun is shining, you need to be wearing sunscreen! At the very least, use a moisturizer with SPF (like the one with mentioned above) or a foundation that contains it. This way, you will be giving your face the protection it needs from the harsh winter sun without coating your skin in too many products.

Back to the Basics

There are a lot of cosmetics out there that claim to be good for your skin. Make sure you check the back of the products you use for an ingredient list. Spending a little extra on facial scrubs, lotions, and cosmetics without harmful chemicals is worth it. Brown Sugar

We know what you’re thinking. Brown sugar? Come on, that doesn’t go in a scrub! However, many people use brown sugar outside of the kitchen as an exfoliator, and there are multiple recipes for body scrubs that contain this delicious baking ingredient. Orange

Orange zest and orange essential oil have also long been associated with acne relief. Oranges are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C (which you probably already knew) and that is why we love to include them in our homemade scrubs. You can use this app year round at select grocery stores and restaurants, but it is great for holiday purchases as well. Simply link your loyalty accounts or submit your receipts after each purchase. Making the most of your holiday season With the holidays approaching, I find myself focusing less on the idea of being well known and more on the idea of being worth knowing. For me, the anxiety that often accompanies this time of year stems from two problems: too many places to be and not enough time to focus on the joys and comforts of home. In the end, it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of buying the best gift and attending all the festivities. It’s hard to find the “peace” and “joy” you see plastered all over holiday shirts and windows. For this reason, I have compiled a list of goals make the holidays more meaningful.

1. Decorate until your heart is truly content.

In my house, this means we might not decorate as much as our neighbors. For the last six months, my husband and I have been working to discover which parts of minimalism will work for us. We have let go of many things and are much happier as a result. Adding the clutter of extra lights and garland is far too overwhelming for us to consider. A simple, small tree with a few important ornaments is what we will stick to this year.

2. Give back to your community.

The decorating, the shopping, the hosting of holiday gatherings—if you enjoy it, great! If not, you shouldn’t feel pressured to participate in ways that don’t increase your joy. Personally, the best way for me to keep this in perspective is to volunteer in some shape or form throughout the holiday season. There are several organizations that need help collecting items for those who are struggling in our community. 3. Shop local.

I can’t say it enough. The dollar bins at supermarkets might fill up your stockings, but are the objects within them meaningful? Why spend $10 on ten plastic items or candy that will likely never be enjoyed or remembered fondly? books from local bookstores in your family’s stockings. Not only will these thoughtful gifts be remembered for years to come, they will help make another family’s holiday a little brighter.

4. Step outside the traditional holiday scents. Fill your home with calming essential oils and sprays that inspire joy. 5. Make new friends.

Secondhand smoke dangers

How your smoking habit could be harming those you love most Written by Aimee Strong, NP Sometimes people are unintentionally harmed by those closest to them. This is heartbreak no one should suffer through. Secondhand smoke is a killer. Even with declining numbers, smoking remains harmful not just to the user, but in some cases, more dangerous to those sitting nearby. Modern research links tobacco use to cancer, heart disease and stroke. Those that continue to smoke assume the health risks and pass those risks off others around them. Take cigarettes, for instance. There are two types of cigarette smoke. The first is sidestream, or smoke coming from a lit cigarette. The second is mainstream, or smoke exhaled by the user. Although both types are dangerous, research shows a higher rate of cancer-causing chemicals in sidestream smoke because it is unfiltered. Mainstream smoke is inhaled through a cigarette filter, absorbed by the user’s body and exhaled. When someone smokes indoors or in a car, the risks are amplified. Chemicals settle in dust, carpet and clothes, wreaking havoc on unsuspecting bodies. Oncologists often find cancerous tumors in the lungs of patients that never smoked, but lived with parents or spouses that did. Those are tough conversations. Many types of cancer have champion organizations and movements that bring attention and support to cancer survivors. Lung cancer—the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States—remains often overlooked. Lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer. Tobacco use accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 80 percent of all lung cancer deaths. The statistics are alarming. According to the American Cancer Society, physicians will diagnose an estimated 221,200 new lung cancer cases in 2015. The cancer society estimates 158,000 deaths from lung cancer this year. The United States Surgeon General’s Office has identified 20 million smoking-related deaths since 1964. Over two million deaths were attributed to secondhand smoke. Because smoking is such a huge risk factor, smokers and those living around secondhand smoke should watch for warning signs of lung cancer, including a new or different cough that does not go away or gets worse, coughing up blood, changes in voice, unintentional weight loss and chest pain with deep breathing. In children, secondhand smoke exposure may be linked to lymphoma, leukemia and brain cancer, in addition to bronchitis, asthma and higher rates of hospitalization. Smoking among pregnant women is linked to low birth weight, miscarriage and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Children have little, if any, influence on their environment. The holiday season has officially kicked off —cue our favorite time of the year! Despite it being one of our favorites, spending is at an all-time high. These next few months can potentially take a major toll on your bank account, but with these quick tips—we’ve got your wallet’s back!

This Thanksgiving, it’s all about taking advantage of those inevitable leftovers. Give those boring turkey sandwiches an upgrade with these budget-friendly and yummy recipes:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Use a cup to cut small circles from the pie crusts. Layer a small amount of the ingredients on the crust (leave room on sides to seal crust). Top with second crust and seal edges with fork. Poke top twice with fork and brush with egg.

Cranberry Turkey Quesadilla | 45¢ per serving

Mashed Potatoes Puffs | 13¢ per puff

1 wheat tortilla wrap 2 tbsp. cranberry sauce Leftover turkey Mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 tsp. balsamic dressing Ground pepper

2 cups mashed potatoes 3 large eggs, beaten 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1/4 cup minced chives 1/4 cup cooked bacon Salt & pepper, to taste

Lay wrap out flat. Spread the cranberry sauce over half the wrap and sprinkle ground pepper to taste. Add cheese on top of cranberry sauce. Top with turkey. Drizzle the balsamic dressing over the turkey and fold the bare end of wrap over filling. Bring a skillet to medium high. Add cooking spray or olive oil. Gently add the quesadilla to the skillet and let cook on each side for 2 minutes.

Heat oven to 400°F and lightly grease a mini muffin pan. Mix together potatoes, eggs, 3/4-cup cheese, chives, bacon, salt & pepper. Place a spoonful of mixture in each muffin cup. Sprinkle tops with remaining cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

How to make the most of your grocery store’s produce aisle It’s the same story every year. The kids return to school, temperatures drop, summer vacation becomes a fading memory and the local farmers market closes. Fortunately, you don’t have to miss out on your favorite fruits and veggies. Many are still available in local grocery stores and some smart tricks and choices can help you eat like the farmers market is open all winter long. “The seasonal nature of farmers markets doesn’t have to keep you from reaping the benefits of fresh and locally grown produce,” says registered dietitian Paul Kriegler. “The average store carries more than 45,000 different foods, so it’s important to know what to buy and what to avoid.” To eat as if the farmers market is still in session, keep these tips in mind on your next visit to the grocery store:

• Plan meals and menus for the week and make your shopping list accordingly. If you stick to your list, it will help you avoid impulse purchases. • Keep kids involved. If your children loved visiting the farmers market and learning how to eat healthy, there’s no reason you can’t continue their education in the grocery store. Take them shopping with you, and give them a small budget so they can pick their own produce. Encourage them to pick fruits and vegetables from every color of the rainbow. • It’s not just folklore—if you shop while hungry, you’re more likely to make poor choices. “When you’re hungry, anything looks good, and junk looks even more appealing,” Kriegler cautions. “Have a healthful snack like a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit before you shop.” • Your diet should consist of mostly fruits and vegetables, so make the produce aisle the first stop when you visit the grocery store. If you fill your cart with more produce, you’ll have less room for unhealthy choices. • Shop from the outer aisles, where you’re most likely to find whole, unprocessed foods—like fresh produce. Inner aisle have more processed foods.

• Don’t be afraid to try new things. As the seasons turn, new and unexpected items may appear in produce aisles. Varieties of squash began appearing in September and will stay through March, as well as turnips, rutabagas, carrots and other cool weather favorites. An online search can help you find new recipes for virtually any type of unfamiliar produce. Experimenting with new veggies and fruits can be exciting and nutritious! • Take advantage of store resources. Many grocery stores now include signage in the produce aisle that tells you where different items originated, how you might use them, flavor and nutrition—even recipes! If your grocery store offers free recipe cards beside a new vegetable, give both a try. • Whenever possible, buy organic. Kriegler says, “Your first goal is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables your family eats, but once you’re doing that it’s important to choose organic produce. It will help you avoid toxins, herbicides and pesticides in your food that could affect your metabolism and cause other health problems.” • If you must buy prepackaged and labeled foods, read the ingredient list first. An easy recipe to enjoy with your family this holiday season

For those of us who love pumpkin pie, this time of year is heavenly. At most early holiday gatherings, the smell of pumpkin delicately travels to your nose as soon as you enter the room. Whether you are hosting a party this year or simply craving this holiday pastime, you’ll want to give this recipe for Pumpkin Pie from www.iheartnaptime.net a try!

Classic Pumpkin Pie

2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves 1 (15 oz can) Libby’s 100% pure pumpkin 1 1/4 cup evaporated milk 1 unbaked pie crust Whip cream Pre-heat oven to 425°. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Add vanilla and spices and mix until combined. Stir in pumpkin. Gradually stir in evaporated milk until the mixture is smooth. Pour mixture into pie shell. Then place pie tin on a baking sheet and place in the oven to bake for 40-55 minutes or until the center is done. Place a knife in the center to make sure it comes out clean. They recommend that you cover the crust with foil the last 20 minutes of baking so it doesn’t get too brown. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Top with homemade whip cream. Frozen Butter Pecan Pumpkin Pie { from www.blessedbeyondcrazy.com }

Pumpkin Pie in a Jar

{ from www.shedoesthecity.com } For the Pumpkin Pie Filling: 15 oz can pumpkin puree 5 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice pinch of cloves 2 tablespoons heavy cream

1 quart butter pecan ice cream, softened 1 (9 inch) store purchased Oreo pie crust 1 cup canned pumpkin 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped 1/2 cup caramel ice cream topping 1/2 cup chocolate syrup Dollop of whipped topping Spread ice cream into the Oreo crust; freeze for 2 hours or until firm. In a small bowl, combine pumpkin, sugar, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Fold in whipped cream. Spread over ice cream. Cover and freeze for 2 hours or until firm. Remove from the freezer 5 - 10 minutes before slicing. Drizzle with caramel ice cream topping and chocolate syrup. Add dollop of whipped cream. (May be frozen for up to 2 months.)

Cream Cheese Mousse: 3 egg whites 1/2 cup sugar 4 oz cream cheese, softened 1/4 tsp vanilla 2 cups mini marshmallows Cookie Layer: 1 1/2 cups chopped gingersnaps and graham crackers Additional: whipped cream for topping and caramel sauce for drizzling, if desired Pumpkin Pie Filling: Scoop pumpkin puree into a medium sized bowl. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, cloves and heavy cream and mix well. Set in refrigerator to firm while you make the mousse. Cream Cheese Mousse: Add egg whites to your mixer bowl (separate from pumpkin pie filling) and beat on medium-high until soft peaks form. While beating, slowly add sugar, and beat until stiff peaks form again. Mixture will go from being kind of frothy to smooth and will gain volume. When done, set egg white mixture aside. In another bowl, mix cream cheese and vanilla together until smooth. Add cream cheese mixture to egg white mixture and combine. Melt marshmallows in a small bowl in the microwave, about 15-30 seconds. Add melted marshmallows to egg white and cream cheese mixture. Mix until well combined. Refrigerate for an hour or so. Assembly: Start with about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the graham cracker/ gingersnap crumbs on the bottom of the jar. Add 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie filling. Add 2 tablespoons of cream cheese mousse. Repeat layers 1-3. You should have 2 of each layer. At this point, you can put the tops on the jar to keep in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve them, top with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle, if desired.

2 Shots Pinnacle Pumpkin Pie Vodka 1 Shot Captain Morgan Spiced Rum 1 Shot of Espresso 1 Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream 1 Dash of Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and shake well until blended. Poor into a martini glass and dash pumpkin pie spice to garnish and add aroma.

Hot Pumpkin Pie Cocktail

{ from www.thecookierookie.com } 4 cups Almond milk (or regular milk) 2 cups Cinnamon Vanilla Baileys Irish Cream ½ cup vanilla or pumpkin pie vodka 1 can pumpkin puree (not to be confused with pumpkin pie filling) 1½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice Cool Whip or another whipped cream topping Bring the almond milk, Irish cream, and vodka to a boil in a large pot. Once boiling, turn down heat to low and stir in pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. Stir quickly to incorporate. Serve warm, topped with cool whip or whipped cream, and garnish with a little more pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon.

Inspirational women gather to network in Roanoke We are so excited for the sixth annual Virginia Women’s Conference at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center on Saturday, November 21! This free event takes place each year in rotating regions of Virginia and brings women from around the Commonwealth together to explore tools for success. This year, we feel fortunate that it will take place in the city of Roanoke! The conference will begin at 8:30 am and last until 3:30 pm. During this time, participants will have the opportunity to network and attend workshops that provide advice from experts on health, careers, leadership, personal development, business, finance and retirement. Last year’s conference, at Old Dominion University, was attended by almost 800 women! Positive energy radiates from this event. It is an incredible time to inspire and be inspired by amazing women. Hosted by Senator Mark R. Warner, Virginia Tech, Hollins University, the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the City of Roanoke, this year’s conference will provide a wealth of information that you don’t want to miss.
