HELLO
PROFILE
Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio.
I am a design-focused, motivated and passionate student. Whilst design and its influence on the wider world are my main interest, I also enjoy the arts, music, and spending time with a broad spectrum of people.
I am currently in my third year of Design for Industry at Northumbria University. As part of my course I have two sixtwelve month placement periods, these are usually March-September in both my second and third year. I completed two placements during my second year and am currently looking for a third year placement. If you wish to contact me my email address is; hello@rebeccabayliss.com I look forward to hearing from you. Rebecca Bayliss
I am confident and dynamic team leader, as evidenced by recent design project work where I have ensured team members have completed delivered to a high quality and on time. In addition to this I am highly motivated in individual work, which has been of great benefit when I have been required to balance the needs of several ongoing projects. By necessity, I am fluent multi-tasker and forward planner.

TIMELINE 2009 - 11 GCSEs grade A-C Huntington School, York.
2011 - A-levels in • Music (B) • Product Design (C) • Fine Art (B) Huntington School, York
2011 - 2015 BA Design for Industry, Northumbria University.
2012-14 - I am student rep for my university course - representing the voice of the students to the tutors. I have responsibility to ensure issues are resolved as they arise, reaching a compromise if necessary.
2012 - I worked for York Arts Academy as an assistant photographer at their Youth Music Festival. This opportunity allowed me to practice my photography at a professional level in a fast paced environment.
2013 - A 4-month internship with Shift - a multi disciplinary design constancy based in Newcastle. I worked on large and small client-based briefs. These projects ranged from product design, to branding, to interior work. Team work was essential to bring together our different backgrounds/disciplines.
2013 - I had a 2 week placement with Perro. Perro is a graphics and web constancy also based in Newcastle. During my time there I looked at branding and packaging. I also learned about the ethos and culture of a commercial organisation.
2014 Placement?
2013 - I am a founding member of the Northumbria Music Society. I was elected to the position of treasurer, where I have managed the society’s bank accounts. The role involves Grant application, design publicity, member recruitment, and event organisation.
20?? - After graduating I am keen to continue my professional development, with the long-term aim of achieving Chartered Designer status.
2015 - Graduation

INSPIRATION What do we like?
THE COLLAR
POP ART
Rene Lacoste nicknamed the ‘Crocodile’ was the creator of the famous white polo shirt. Our immediate inspiration came from the process of lifting up the collar as a simple change in style, something which could easily reflect the wearers mood.
From well known artists such as Andy Warhol and Lichtenstein, came the rise of pop art in the 1950’s. The art movement was about bold advertising and kitsch patterns, something we are inspired to incorporate within our design of the shoe.

How can we be sure of our idea?
THE MOULD
To make the first prototype, we used papier mache to cover a last. Once the paper had dried, we cut apart the paper mould and stitched a heavy weight material to form a solid base for our experiments. The mould allowed us to continually change and adapt our ideas as a group.

How can we reach the Indie Male?
ON THE WEB
To target the Indie Male, we found that buying online will be the most effective sales strategy. We understand that the Indie Male is a trend setter, someone who is unlikely to make an impulse buy based on the pressure of a sales team within store.
BRANDED NON-LITERAL FORM
As the user places the non-literal form onto the base it lights up, when the form is taken away again it turns off. Smeg is an Italian family brand. I was influenced by Smeg’s use of clean lines and simplicity. The brand has several different aesthetic lines, I tried to incorporate all of their styles to create the feel of the brand.
Box boat The majority of deaths in floods are cause by water born diseases. These occur by being in and drinking the flood water. The Box boat gets people out of the water quickly and efficiently, providing them with the necessary aid and shelter. Once the Box boat is no longer needed it can be collected, cleaned and used again.
Box boat When the box is in the plane it can be stacked ready for Air drop.
The box’s paracute slows decent.
As the parachute catches the wind it releases the sides of the box.

The boat lands in the water.
The boat is ready for people to get in.
My entry for the plastics competition 2013. The CAD is surface modeling made in Rhino. The box boat is for use in flooding disasters in third world countries.
Whilst working at Shift we were given the brief to design a new exhibition stand. The concept Pop Box is designed to be light weight, modular, flat pack, reusable and affordable.

In this magazine layout I have used my own Images. I have tried to recreate the magic of the Lumière festival by keeping the background dark.
This is another example of graphics work made when I was on placement at Shift. The photo’s where made by dismantling an old video tape and bluetaking it into shape.

When working at Shift my coworkers and I were asked to design a flyer for Ouseburn Futures. My design was chosen and handed out at the late shows May 2013.
Ouseburn The valley where creativity flows... Recently formed Ouseburn Futures is composed of people who live, work or play in the Ouseburn Valley. We are passionate about the Ouseburn, care about its heritage and want a vibrant, thriving, creative future.
Ouseburn The valley where creativity flows... We are an organisation of local people that are pushing for the regeneration of the Ouseburn area. Neighbourhood Forum and a Neighbourhood Plan We are currently considering whether to set up an Ouseburn Neighbourhood Forum, and whether to develop an Ouseburn Neighbourhood Plan. These are tools created by the Government to enable local residents and businesses have more say about planning matters in their area. Neighbourhood Forums are set-up to promote or improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of an area. One benefit is that developers who involve the community in developing their plans will be looked upon more favourably when they submit planning applications. What do you think? Would you like to be involved in agreeing a Neighbourhood Plan or be part of the Neighbourhood Forum? Keep your eyes on our website, Twitter or Facebook so you can join in and take part in the discussion.
