TULALIP TRIBES BOARD OF DIRECTORS tulaliptribes-nsn.gov
The Tulalip Tribes were organized under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. The Tulalip Constitution and Bylaws were approved January 24, 1936, and a charter ratified October 3, 1936. The governing body is the seven-member Tulalip Board of Directors. The Tribes provides many services to its members including early childhood development, higher education assistance, health and dental clinics, a pharmacy, a state-licensed chemical dependency recovery program, senior retirement home and cultural activities. We collaborate with the Marysville School District on the education of our youth. The Tulalip Tribes provides oversight to the Tulalip Housing Authority, which provides nearly 300 housing units for tribal members, and to the Tulalip Utilities District, the primary provider of water and sewer services. Of the 3,200 employees working for Tulalip Tribes, more than two-thirds are working in the Tribes’ business enterprises: Tulalip Resort Casino, Tulalip Housing, Tulalip Broadband, Tulalip Marina, Tulalip Liquor & Smoke Shop and the Quil Ceda Village Business Park.

greetings from the festival president
I am excited and feel honored to be your 2013-2014 Marysville Strawberry Festival President. I would like to welcome you to our 83rd year of celebrating our festival. The theme this year is “Celebrate Marysville”. This year’s festival is all about Marysville and our surrounding community and
all that we have to offer to residents and visitors. My wife Alice and I were born and raised in the Everett area; we were married in July 1975 and have enjoyed living in the EverettMarysville area all our lives. We have raised three sons, Scott, Aaron and Matthew, and with their wives we have been blessed with three granddaughters, Taylor, Lily and Addisyn. We are excited that they will all be here to share the festival weekend with us. Alice and I moved to Marysville in 1997 and being part of the Marysville Strawberry Festival has helped us really get involved in our community. The “Celebrate Marys-
ville” festivities will begin on Saturday, June 14, 2014 with Kids’ Day in the Park and end on Sunday June 22, 2014. The Grand Parade and Fireworks on Saturday, June 21, is sure to draw a big crowd. Along with Kids’ Day and the Grand Parade, throughout the week we will be having the Berry Run, Fashion Show, Talent Show, Kiddies Parade, Market in the Park, Rose Planting Ceremony, Carnival and once again the Car Show. Fun for everyone and activities for all ages! In closing I would like to give a big thank you to all the Festival board members and volunteers for all their hard work and count-
less hours they have put in to make the Festival events possible. I also want to thank the Tulalip Tribes and the City of Marysville and all of our sponsors. Without them the Marysville Strawberry Festival would not be possible. When you see one of our volunteers or visit one of our sponsors please join me in thanking them for helping to put on our festival. This is a great time to create new memories and unforgettable moments. I hope you will take the opportunity to participate and make your own memories as we “Cele brate Marysville”.

2014 festival theme:
Celebrate Marysville!
The 83rd annual Marysville Strawberry Festival is all about our hometown. And what could be better? Marysville is small enough to retain its community feel, yet large enough to provide quality services to its citizens. As the second-largest city in Snohomish County, Marysville’s growth continues to provide economic hope and confidence, while the city’s leadership focuses on bringing more family-wage jobs to the area. The Strawberry Festival has earned a well-deserved reputation as the signature community event in north Snohomish County, and its popularity continues to spread across the state and over the border into Canada. Putting the festival together each year is more work than glamour, but there’s enough fun involved that volunteers return year after year to lend a hand. To find out how you can get involved, visit www. maryfest.org.

Maryfest board members and key volunteers work year-round to plan and organize the annual Strawberry Festival. In addition to serving on committees and overseeing volunteers, board members also attend at least three parades with the festival float during the season, representing Marysville in our neighboring communities, throughout the state and into Canada.

olympic athlete to lead the grand parade
The Marysville Strawberry Festival has tossed the title of “Grand Marshal” of the parade to someone with plenty of throwing experience. In fact, this Grand Marshal has twice been to the Olympics, is a U.S. National Champion, and is one of the best in the world at hurling a 2.2-lb. metal plate. Jarred Rome was born and raised in Marysville, and is a 1995 graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Rome’s family still lives in the Marysville area, so the 37-year old discus thrower is still very involved in the

community and is excited to be back in town. “It’s a pretty big deal,” Rome said of the upcoming Strawberry Festival. “Last time I went to the Strawberry Festival I was a senior in high school. I’ve never really made it back for the Strawberry Festival in a really long time so this will be kind of fun.” Currently, Rome is the head throws coach at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon and a clinician at the Tony Ciarelli Clinic in Newport Beach, California. Rome also holds sev-

In high school at Marysville-Pilchuck, Rome was an avid football player who occasionally dabbled in discus throwing. Those sports were reversed during his senior year, when a knee injury forced Rome to stop playing so much football and start throwing more. Turns out he was pretty good at it. Rome left Marysville after high school to attend Boise State University in Idaho, where he was a six-time All-American in the discus

throw. He set school records in both the shot put and discus throws, and was a runner up in the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Rome went with the United States’ Olympic teams to Greece in 2004 and London in 2012, and earned a silver medal in the 2011 Pan American Games while representing the United States. Rome is still very involved in the community, and hosts a throwing clinic each year for local high school students to learn and refine their discus, shot put, and javelin throwing techniques. “I’ve learned quite a bit in
21 years of throwing,” Rome said, “so I definitely want to come back to my high school and come back to Snohomish County. I teach future throwers and future athletes to maybe become Olympians as well. I want
to educate my home area in how to throw.” Rome will lead the Strawberry Festival parade on Saturday, June 21, and is looking forward to seeing the smiling faces of his hometown crowd.

community elders are treated like royalty
Grandview Village Windsor Square
Ed and Ruby Linde will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on June 15, just a few days before the Strawberry Festival Grand Parade, in which they will participate as the King and Queen of Windsor Square. The couple spent most of their lives in North Dakota, where Ruby was a school teacher and Ed was a farmer who was “called by the Lord” to be a pastor. In 1981 they moved to Marysville to be closer to family. The Lindes, who have lived at Windsor Square for just over a year, have two children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Even in their downsized residence, Ed has continued to enjoy his “tinkerer” hobby, using the couple’s pantry as his garage/tool shed.
Grandview Village’s King Gorden Rux and Queen Betty Cooper were selected by their peers at the Valentine’s Party as the couple to represent the residents of Grandview Village in the Strawberry Festival Parade. Gorden Rux was born in North Dakota and moved to Hartford, WA (now known as Lake Stevens) in 1936. Hartford’s population at the time was 900. Betty Cooper was raised in Lake Stevens and went to the same Lake Stevens High School as Gorden, but graduated two years after Gorden. Betty met and married Leonard Cooper, who was Gorden’s best friend in high school. Gorden went off to war and then returned to become the postmaster of Lake Stevens from 1958 to 1981. Come cheer them on in the 2014 Marysville Strawberry Festal Parade on June 21st.
Mountain View Rehab Velva Thomas is making a repeat appearance this year as the royal representative of Mountain View Rehabilitation (formerly Madeleine Villa), as she was elected queen in 2013 as well. Velva loves playing bingo and helping make quilts for Project Linus. Her royal escort, Benny Vodegel, was not available for a photo. Benny, a native of the Philippines, enjoys weekly visits by his two daughters who live nearby. A retired mechanic, Benny has a passion for old cars.

Tulalip Senior Center Members of the Tulalip Senior Center chose Hank and Geraldine Williams to represent them in the 2014 Strawberry Festival parade as King and Queen. Both Hank and Geraldine were born in Tulalip, but spent time in other parts of the state while growing up. In 1954, after serving three years in the National Guard, Hank started a two-year stint in the Army. After his discharge, he came back to Tulalip and went into the family logging and fishing operations. Geraldine was a hard-working young woman, always working with her hands in the fields and canneries until she went to secretarial school and became a secretary/bookkeeper for the Tulalip Tribes. The couple has seven children, more than 30 grandkids (including two sets of twins, born to their son in back-to-back years), and a number of great-grandchildren. The Williamses are looking forward to the festival, and Hanks says, “I hope it doesn’t rain!”
Emeritus Bill and Lois Bailey were not available for a photo or interview. The couple resides at Emeritus, formerly Merrill Gardens in Marysville.

Marysville Care Center Robert Maurer and Louise DeVey, residents at Marysville Care Center, were selected as this year’s King and Queen for Strawberry Festival. They will share festival duties, riding in the Grand Parade on Saturday, June 21. Robert went to high school in Marysville, but lived much of his adult life in other parts of the state. He worked as a logger, and served in the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Department for four years while raising five sons and a daughter, and now he enjoys 12 grandkids. Robert is familiar with the Strawberry Festival parade, as he has driven the float for Due’s Berry Farm in past years. Louise and her family moved from Ontario, Canada, to Snohomish County in 1965. She and her husband were parents to four sons (three born within a 2-1/2 year span) and a daughter, and now have eight grandkids added to the family.

strawberry tart
Create this summery treat for your festival weekend house guests!
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup cold butter or margarine, cut up 2 tablespoons cold shortening 3 tablespoons cold water 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch 2 cups half-and-half 5 egg yolks 1 teaspoon rose water or orange-flower water (optional) 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced Garnish: fresh mint sprig
Preparation
Pulse first 3 ingredients in a blender or food processor 3 or 4 times or until combined. Add 1/3 cup butter and shortening; pulse 5 or 6 times or until crumbly. With blender or processor running, gradually add 3 tablespoons water, and process until dough forms a ball and leaves sides of bowl, adding more water if necessary. Wrap dough in plastic wrap, and chill 1 hour. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Press into bottom and up sides of a 9-inch tart pan. Line dough with parchment paper; fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes. Remove weights and parchment paper, and bake 3 more minutes. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cornstarch in a medium saucepan. Whisk together half-and-half, egg yolks, and, if desired, rose water. Gradually whisk half-andhalf mixture into sugar mixture in saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, and cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. Remove mixture from heat. Stir in 3 tablespoons butter and vanilla; cover and chill at least 4 hours. Spoon into prepared pastry shell; top with strawberry slices, and serve immediately. Garnish if desired.

Poochapalooza - a country fair for dogs
Every dog can have its day at Snohomish County’s largest dog event, the 8th annual Marysville Poochapalooza. The outdoor dog event, produced by the Marysville Dog Owners Group, is on Saturday, July 12, this year at Strawberry Fields Park. Dog shows, performances and competitions, along with numerous vendors and groups will keep dogs and their humans busy throughout the day. Enter your dog in one or several Best in Show contests, scheduled all day for many different categories
including Best Kisser, Best Voice, Wackiest Pet Trick and Best Costume. Cost of entry is $5 for one contest or $10 for unlimited contests. Dachshunds will speed down their lanes in the Running of the Wieners races. The top three winning dogs will be invited to compete at a Seattle Seahawks game. their time in the hopes that these dogs will find a home from the show. The Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers perform routines with their dogs. The group choreographs tricks with their dogs and performs their moves set to music. Poochapalooza is a free event, but there is a suggested donation of $5. All proceeds support Strawberry Fields for Rover Off-Leash Park, which is maintained year-round by volunteers. For more information about Poochapalooza, visit poochapalooza.org.

Marysville car show returns to 3rd St.
The third annual Rodz on 3rd car show, sponsored by the Downtown Marysville Merchants Association, continues this year on Saturday, July 12, featuring all types of cars, including classics, rods, muscle cars and custom cars. The show recognizes many types of entries during its award ceremony. The ‘Best in Show’ is recognized along with other awards like ‘Biggest Oil Leak’ or ‘Worst Luck,’ given to the car that looks like it had the most mechanical problems getting there or to a car still in progress. The trophies are all handcrafted by Will Borg, who helps organize the event, and consist of mostly car parts and tools like pistons, wrenches and gears. Eric Schoonmaker, who helps organize and emcee the event, said the event helps recognize the passion some people have for their cars. The show also welcomes auto-related vendors and offers live music and visits by local “pin-up” girls.

Downtown street fairs welcome pedestrians
n Shoppers check out handmade jewelry at last year’s Marysville Street Festival.
Street fairs are a festive part of summer life, and both Arlington and Marysville offer great opportunities to stroll, shop and enjoy the sunshine (hopefully). The Arlington Street Fair comes first, with vendors’ colorful displays taking over Olympic Avenue July 11-13. The fair is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. From the Farmer’s Market at the south end of Olympic, next to Legion Park, take a leisurely walk northward to check out all the unique offerings. You’ll find some commercial vendors among the crafters and artists, along with a few informational
booths run by nonprofits and civic organizations. The street festival also features live entertainment, the Arlington Idol contest, and much more. Arlington’s restaurants are open during the Street Fair,
which is organized by the Downtown Arlington Business Association (DABA), and “festival food” will also be available for purchase from streetside vendors. Since the Arlington Street Fair shares a weekend with the Fly-In at the Arlington Airport, a free shuttle is available to transport visitors from downtown to the airport and back. A month later, August 8-10, it’s Marysville’s turn to host the Marysville Street Festival along Third Street in the historic downtown. The August event is billed as “Handmade and Homegrown,” and participants are limited to those who produce their own handcrafted items – nothing commercial or mass produced. Live music is presented at the Outer Court, and a variety of delicious food is available for purchase from local

as the bluegrass festival, the Whitehorse Mountain Ampitheatre in Darrington. But the sounds bouncing off the hillsides are definitely different.
What would summer be without bluegrass music in Darrington? After the devastating Oso mudslide, which blocked Hwy. 530 on the way to Darrington, there was lots of speculation about whether or not the Darrington Bluegrass Festival would happen this year. Well, tune up your banjo and strap on your mandolin, because music lovers are not about to let Mother Nature have the last word. The 38th annual Darrington Bluegrass Festival is set for July 18-20, and it looks like WSDOT will have at least one lane open on 530 in time for the traffic. This year’s bluegrass festival has attracted nationallyrecognized acts that include Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Audie Blaylock & Redline, and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road. Local musicians include Money Creek Mining Co., Blueberry Hill, Faast & Blair, and North Country Bluegrass. The young ones are also invited to participate in the music-making, as Raynae Redmond offers a 2-hour class “Kids in Bluegrass” for ages 6 to 18, whether they plan an instrument or not. Redmond will teach the

youngsters to play and sing some traditional bluegrass songs, then the kids will perform a 45-minute set at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. A major part of the fun at any bluegrass event is the informal jam sessions that happen wherever two or more musicians gather. Campgrounds are filled with music and camaraderie, as lasting friendships are made over the weekend. Tickets to the festival are $45 per person for all three days, plus $35 for camping (per RV or tent). You can also pay for daily entrance to the grounds, at $20 for Friday or Sunday and $25 for all day Saturday. Children 12 and under are free with an adult.
For more information, go to darringtonbluegrass.com. And for those who prefer their guitars plugged in, the 14th annual Summer Meltdown Festival, Aug. 7-10, may be just the ticket. Summer Meltdown takes place on the same grounds
Weekend passes to the 4-day festival include onsite tent camping. Now through June 16, the weekend pass is $150, but prices will increase as the date gets closer. Trailers and RVs are also welcome, at an additional cost. See www.summermelt downfest.com for more information.
