“That was great. We saw tons of participation,” said Rose Intveld, communica tions specialist for Snohomish County Parks and Recreation, of the two-week-long food drive. The recent food drive collected more than 4,000 pounds of food than what was collected in 2021, which was organized as a drivethrough, drop-off event. The food drive in 2022 saw the Evergreen State Fair partner with Lee Johnson Auto Family. Donors could drop off items at any of 10 locations throughout the county and receive a ticket for one free admission to the Evergreen State Fair.

The fair’s food drive pro vided a boost for food banks in Marysville and Arlington. The Marysville Community Food Bank received around 2,000 pounds of food. “We really appreciate the partnership that has been there,” said Jim Beaudoin, executive director of the Marysville Community Food Bank.He said food donations have been tracking a little light, but money donations have been higher.

“We want people to come who needs help,” Rankin said.

“Every single one of us is tightening our belt,” Beaudo in said. “We’re seeing need creepTheup.”Marysville Community Food Bank sees between 400 families a week and between 1,500 and 1,600 families a month. Families pick up food Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Carla Rankin, executive director for the Arlington Community Food Bank, said the food from the Evergreen State Fair Food Drive adds a nice variety of food for visitors.

Volunteers with the Evergreen State Fair food drive collected more than 17,000 pounds of food that will benefit people using food banks throughout Snohomish County.

Rankin stressed the Arling ton Food Bank has enough food to meet family’s needs.

The Arlington Com munity Food Bank received 5 percent of the food collected from the Evergreen State Fair drive.“Our demand is really up,” Rankin said, noting visitors are seeing the effect infla tion, higher transportation costs and easing of COVID recovery programs. “We’re just seeing an increase.”

Fair food drive benefits local families

Ayearly Evergreen State Fair tradition helps local families get food. The Evergreen State Fair food drive that took place during the first half of July collected 17,516 pounds of food that will help people served by Volunteers of America Western Wash ington and the Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition.

The Arlington Community Food Bank is seeing about 250 to 300 households a week, as well as operating a mobile food bank. People can pick up from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and noon to 1:30 p.m. Fridays. She noted that 525,000 people in Washington state get help each month from foodThebanks.Evergreen State Fair provides one of the larger drives that benefit the food bank, Rankin said. The Postal Service food drive in May col lected around 13,000 pounds of food and the Santa Run, organized by North County Fire and EMS in December, brought in 23,000 pounds of food.

Beaudoin said that when a family has an unexpected expense come up – repairing a flat tire, they could offset that by coming to the food bank and get food.

Kathy VanBuskirk

Each year, the Evergreen State Fair honors an indi vidual or family who has contributed significant person al time and energy toward the improvement and betterment of the annual fair. This year, the Evergreen State Fair recognizes and celebrates the dedica tion of Kathy VanBuskirk, 4-H Equestrian leader. Kathy was recognized in 2021, but since there was no parade or open ing ceremony due to a smaller fair, she will receive full honors in 2022.Kathy says that the years have gone by so fast it doesn’t seem possible that she has been in the 4-H programs for 50 years. As a leader, she has been president, horse show chair, served on the Horse Fair Committee, announcer at horse show events, and active in the 4-H tack sale since it first began over 30 years ago. She was inducted into the Wash ington State 4-H Hall of Fame October of 2014. Kathy has volunteered at the Evergreen State Fair every year for the past 20+ years working in the horse arena office helping with registration, ribbons, solving problems and answering questions at the of fice window. She is the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave at night for the 10 days 4-H horses are at the Fair. She also works at all the 4-H Horse events at the Fair Park. Kathy and her husband Bruce are celebrating 46 years of marriage this year and have two children together: their son Jay who participated in motorcycle 4-H and is active in auto racing at the Evergreen Speedway; and their daughter April who was in the 4-H horse program.Allofthese things have been wonderful, but for Kathy the best part has been working with young people, watching them learn about horses and helping others within their clubs and their communities.

Kathy gets great pleasure see ing the kids she led bring their children back into the program after they are grown and gone. She is looking forward to see ing the third generation of 4-H kids join her program this year. As Kathy always insists, it has been most rewarding working with parents, teachers, leaders and a County that encourages and supports young people.
