Welcome from Arlington’s Mayor
Dear friends and visitors, Welcome to Arlington’s 2014 Summer Festival! It is our privilege to be your host and to invite your participation in the variety of festival activities. This year’s festival season kicks off with our famous 4th of July Frontier Days festivities in downtown Arlington. We hope you will join us for a fun filled day starting with a pancake breakfastt at Haller Park at 7 a.m., then continuing on to the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon, Kiwanis auctions, the dedication of the new playground at Haller Park, and an afternoon of old-fashioned carnival games and food at Legion Park.
n Mayor Barb Tolbert
The 4th of July Grand Parade starts at 5 p.m on Olympic Avenue, preceded by the annual Kiddies Parade. After the parade, we hope you join us at Haller Park for the annual Rotary Duck Dash and live music,
before heading out to Bill Quake Memorial Park to watch the spectacular fireworks display. The festival continues with the 46th Annual Arlington Fly-In at Arlington Municipal Airport. The Fly-In draws over 1,000 aircraft and 50,000 visitors annually to Arlington for five days of pure aviation excitement. The Fly-In begins on Thursday, July 10, and continues through Saturday, July 12, with daily airshows, new displays, a hot air balloon night glow, and an outdoor movie theater. In concert with the Fly-In, the Arlington Street Fair packs Olympic Avenue with booths from local artisans and vendors,
along with fabulous entertainment and food. The Street Fair kicks off on Friday, July 11 and concludes on Sunday, July 13. The series of Arlington community festivals is a tradition that brings Arlington together as a community to extend the welcoming spirit to all our visitors. It is through strong community partnerships along with countless volunteer hours that Arlington is able to bring you these incredible community events. We hope you have an enjoyable visit and that you make it a tradition in your family to attend each and every year. Barb Tolbert Mayor of Arlington

Duck Dash winners share $25,000 The Great Stilly Duck Dash is a successful fundraiser for the Arlington Rotary Club, and it provides fun and excitement— and the chance to win a cash prize—to the community. Twenty-five lucky winners, whose numbered ducks cross the watery finish line first, will each receive $1,000 from the Rotary. Parade honors emergency leaders
2014 has been a rough year for Arlington and its neighboring communities. On March 22, a wall of mud devastated an Oso neighborhood, killing 43 people, destroying dozens of homesteads and depositing up to 50 feet of mud across a major highway. From the first day of the tragedy, locals depended on a handful of community leaders for information, logistics and big shoulders. Mayors and fire chiefs in rural Arlington, Oso and Darrington found themselves faced with the enormous task of coordinating an emergency response to an unbeliev-

Arlington Fly-In is cleared for takeoff By Andrew Kneeland andrew@northcountyoutlook.com The Arlington Fly-In has come a long way since 1969. When the Arlington Fly-In aviation show began in 1969, it was an afternoon of airplanes and spaghetti among friends. This year the aviation show is expected to draw about 55,000
guests and includes three days of aerobatics, workshops, and displays of more than 1,000 aircraft. Held from July 10-12 at the Arlington Municipal Airport, the Arlington Fly-In features vintage aircraft, modern marvels, military aircraft, homebuilt machines, and all other photo courtesy of arlington fly-in

forms of aviation. Bi-plane rides are offered throughout the weekend. Friday is labeled as vintage day with a vintage planes fly-by, a vintage radiocontrolled plane contest, and a vintage motorcycle stunt show. Hot air balloons will light up the sky in the evening. The Arlington Fly-In will present a new fireworks airshow on Saturday, July 11, as a tribute to the heroic efforts by so many after the Oso mudslide. Team Rocket combines high-speed aerobatics with a fireworks display set to music. A jazz concert featuring MOJO starts at 7 p.m., followed by the airshow at 9:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by Harman Eye Clinic and the Stillaguamish Tribe. With special activities planned just for the youngsters, Thursday is Kids’ Day photo courtesy of arlington fly-in n Vintage aircraft and hot air balloons are among the high-flying sights at the at the Fly-In. kite building, candy airplane crafts, and a special airshow at 2 p.m. While interested locals flock to the airfield for the daily activities, many aviation enthusiasts fly in from around the country and take advantage of onsite camping and special evening events, including outdoor aviation-themed movies shown on a giant screen on the runway. Thursday evening’s selection is the animated feature “Valiant.” “High Road to China” starring Tom Selleck is on tap for Friday evening, and the recent blockbuster “Gravity” will be shown Saturday evening. Daily workshops offered include aircraft building demonstrations, radio-controlled aircraft display, poly fiber fabric covering, and composite concepts. The workshops open each day at 9 a.m. and run continuously until 2 p.m.

What would summer be without a little bluegrass music? This July 18, 19 and 20, the Bluegrass and Country Music Makers Association is hosting the 38th Annual Darrington Bluegrass Festival at the Bluegrass Music Park. Festival of the River addresses salmon, water quality For a quarter of a century the Stillaguamish Festival of the River has been a staple in Washington summer activities, and the Stillaguamish Tribe is determined to make this year’s event the best festival yet. Held at River Meadows County Park in Arlington on August 9 and 10, the Festival aims to provide the community with a venue for education and entertainment centered around making the environment cleaner and healthier for people, fish, and wildlife. The two-day festival will be jam-packed with live music, a circus troupe, children’s activi-
ties, environmental and wellness exhibits, and interpretive salmon habitat tours. There will also be a Pacific Science Center show, a Stillaguamish cultural exhibit, a logging show, and craft and food exhibits. Four major talking points have been adopted for this year’s festival, with the intention to discuss problems and solutions for the following issues: the declining salmon population, poor water quality in the Stillaguamish Water shed, toxic chemicals in and around the Puget Sound/ Georgia Basin estuary, and
wildlife and wildlife habitat declines throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Stillaguamish Tribe will also host a Pow-Wow that is free and open to the general public. According to their website, over 14,000 people came out to learn and celebrate at last year’s festival. Parking and admission to the Stillaguamish Festival of the River and Pow-Wow are free. Gates open at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10. River Meadows County Park is located n A ceremonial Pow-Wow is one of the just east of Arlington on Jor- attractions at the Stillaguamish Festival of the River, Aug. 9 and 10. dan Road.
